if you're transitioning from single player to multiplayer, play the ranked ladder, do NOT play casual rooms

Do you feel like multiplayer is no fun, because you join a room and get stomped by someone many times better than you, or worse, you just get kicked from the room for being too low?

I think a lot of new players see casual games and ranked games as the two options and assume "oh casual must be for noobs whereas ranked games must be where all the pros are". The assumption is that "ranked" = death and "casual" = a chance of winning (credit to Ok-Acanthisitta-1126 )

That's actually completely backwards.

Casual rooms are best used if you have specific people you already know who are at your level. In fact, they are commonly used at the very high level to setup matches for tourneys and for grinding strats, bc it can be hard for the very best people in aoe3 to find good games in quicksearch. If you are playing alone and you join a random casual game lobby, you will almost certainly either 1. get kicked, 2. get stomped or 3. stomp some poor person who is even more noob than you.

The solution is to play ranked quick search. This is an ingenious system that will quickly figure out your rank, and then match you against people who are a similar rank to you, so you can play fun, competitive games where you will usually end up winning or losing about half the time, unless you start making some actual progress in learning the game. The only thing is you will probably have to lose about 5-10 games before the ELO system will accurately rank you, so don't worry about these early games. In fact, you might even want to just resign quickly in your first 5-10 games just so you can get ranked low sooner, so you can start playing fun games faster.

play ranked, get ranked, start playing enjoyable and competitive matches with people at exactly your own skill level

Question AoE3 fanmade versions

I remember some time ago that I downloaded and played a modded or fanmade AoE3 base game with added civs but I can't find anything resembling it online. does anyone know anything about it or can give me pointers in the right direction?

Is Ai weak?

Feels like AOE's II Hd and DE is way harder than III's orginial and DE. Is there a way to improve this, or is the game forever cooked?

Dependence Mode

Independence Mode gave us a mode with no cards (technically a few cards, just automatic and pre sent). How would you feel about a mode being able to send ALL the cards? And to help speed things up, the experience curve never goes up, so shipments are plentiful and comes blazing fast, especially by late game.

And to expand on that, maybe even ALL the Age Up options. Italians can get both strong Mercenaries AND Leonardo's Tank (and maybe even make it replaceable) for example. Aztecs can have super strong eco, defensive buildings, and War Chief. Federal Americans can have all types of additional card interactions from their States. Asians can build (and rebuild) all Wonders (and by extention, Factories and Forts can be rebuilt by everyone too).

And to go further, card and techs that replaces units simply adds the units without taking existing ones away.

And to go even further, ALL Revolts are available, like they just come with being in the Industrial Age (or whatever Age it unlocks at). There probably needs to be a new card UI for this, cause Mexicans alone have like seven separate decks.

And if I may be so bold, make map Mercenaries and Outlaws available AND viable for everyone even in the late game.

And for added debauchery and excess, make all cards that can be renewed in Imperial infinite, so you can keep sending any and all resource and unit shipments. (Might want to cap Nuestras Señoras at twice though in the name of balance, or not in the name of fun.)

A settler wagon (German), a coureur de bois, a Cree coureur de bois (from the settlement next to my camp) and a classic settler. All possible at the same time, thanks to the United States. Not being political here, but couldn't help but notice how beautiful it looks together.

P.S. Still lost to French AI in skirmish mode : (

Does the unit cost translate to balance? eg: units that cost the same perform the same.

Post image
81 Upvotes

On the pic there are 3 similar units, same roles, same price (200 resources). That means they perform the same? Their stats are different, but are the end results the same?

A Russian Cossack is 25% cheaper. That means a Russian Cossack is 75% of a Hussar?

The Hospitaller and the Doppelsoldner cost the same. That means they perform roughly the same, more or less? The Rodelero costs half, so that means each Rodelero is half a Hospitaller?

Are there units that given their price, perform significantly better or significantly worse than units of the same price?

They costs coin and so much pop (therefore extra wood and also face the hard cap of 200). What's the point? Is there some amazing strat I'm missing that makes them super good to mass????

Question Would an Australian aboriginal civ make a sensible addition

Just hypothetically because I'm doing a Pacific DLC what-if.

It seems to be that when this topic is brought up people here will usually say "but they're primitive."

However, AOE3 has always centered around European colonization and usually adds either colonial empires or people that fought those empires, hence the addition of the "primitive" native American civs.

I think a Pacific DLC would be an interesting addition as it could come with lots of new maps, and I read that they were already intending for Australian themed maps.

Question Does French AI always revolt in treaty?

I've played a couple of treaty games with the French and they always seem to revolt, causing them to not collect resources anymore and get steamrolled instantly.

Strategies Which maps are Berry rich? And how can y'all play Ethiopians without this card?

Post image
60 Upvotes

This card has been a crutch for me, as well as berry rich maps (such as Araucania and Nova Scotia - which others are berry rich?).

I find Ethiopians one of the weakest/hardest to play Civs in the games (probably only the Indians are worse), but this card and the right maps are game-changers.

I am talking about Dutch levels of coin in here, as each Berry Bush has 1k coin and in this screenshot alone there are 20 of them. Also, Villagers collect Berries faster than mining, so the coin output here is better than you would get from mines.

Anyway, I am still learning on how to play Ethiopians. Suggestions are welcomed. But I find hard not to bring this card along!

Steam - how do I just never update?

Maybe more a Steam question than here? I play AOE3, but only against the computers. It’s my way of relaxing. I BARELY have the computer power and space to run the game. Last update I could barely get it to install, it takes up most of the remaining space on my very old PC.

Problem is I don’t have warning with these updates, they’re just forced? How do I turn off updates entirely?

Thanks

Why no Prussia for Poland?

Just bought the new DLC, more on the pricier side for me, honestly, but loved how Danes had access to elephant troops who spoke horrible Hindustani but were decorated in the Danish livery. And then the Poles. WINGED HUSSARS!!! I have always kept the Winged Hussar shipment in my deck in skirmishes, and they lead the charge (as they should).

However, why doesn't Poland have access to Prussia when revolting? Yes, I do agree they already have quite a lot of options (idk why Hungary tho, tell me), but wasn't Prussia IN Poland? The rulers of Prussia crowned themselves King in Prussia till they had all of it?

this update is embarrassing for devs

usually when there is a glitch it isn't THIS unplayable. It is just units getting stuck or a portrait not showing... but when a sound is glitched in RTS... When it plays important role like signaling when shipment is ready or your unit is being attacked... it is literally and really unplayable. What were devs thinking?!!!!!
