Commands/Worldedit Lately I have been having a lot of fun using display entities to create signs and advertisements in my city!

I am aware that this technique is abusable for building since you can create blocks at any orientation and scale, so I stick to only using it for signs and advertisements, and I think it works really well! You can get so much more creative expression that you can with just signs and 1mx1m pixel art. I'm curious about people's opinions though. How far is too far from classic faithful Minecraft builds?

This is of course creative mode/commands only, but the world is completely vanilla, and can be viewed by anyone! Though you can do this manually with commands, I use the Axiom mod to create and edit these Text and Item Displays. This is what I put into the text field to get colour and effects:

{"text":"your text here","color":"#FFFFFF","bold":true,"italic":true}

If you set the "Override Brightness" to something high, then the signs will glow at night. This is shader dependent though, and I had to modify Bliss Shaders to support this.

Also, there are a couple of pieces of map art in there as well.

I have done a fair bit of performance testing, and text displays are actually cheaper than text on signs, so if you were planning to label stuff anyways, then text displays don't cost you anything!

Commands/Worldedit I made a blacksmiths power hammer

Post image

lots of axiom tinker tool usage and debugged stuff here, so very survival unfriendly. the base is a headless piston, with that little black lip on it being a netherite helmet on an armor stand placed on a chest underneath. tops just a piston extended, and ofc you cant place a lever on a headless piston like that that was also placed using copy paste. the blacksmith presses down on the lever and the piston on the top starts hammering down. oh and the grindstone with chain just looks cool no other reason

you can trap bunnies in the mud walls and connect leads to them, then connect those leads to the fence in the middle to create this complicated but awesome design

Commands/Worldedit I created a wormhole-style travel effect for the teleporter to my spaceship

1.2k Upvotes

How it works:
Hidden below the End Island is a cylindrical tunnel made of sculk and frog light.
The teleporter doesn't port to the ship right away, but inside the sculk tunnel, causing you to fall down inside it, creating the warp effect. To make it more "warpy", another command block gives you the beacon's speed-effect for two seconds, increasing the FOV during the fall.
After 2 seconds, another command block ports you on the ship, and the FOV is reset to normal.

EDIT: Forgot to add the speed effect detail.

Commands/Worldedit vertical "slabs" using powered pistons and tick stepping

pros: vertical "slabs" (technically still a full block)

cons: frozen time, need space for pistons, must all be placed at once

tutorial:

  1. stop time with "/tick freeze"

  2. place blocks with (sticky) pistons where you want vertical slabs

  3. power pistons (i use redstone blocks)

  4. run "/tick step 2t"

it works best if you use a separate world for each build, as unfreezing time/tick stepping further pushes the blocks too far, ruining the illusion.

I used a technique I discovered yesterday of stretching block displays with custom heads to extreme heights, this increases the gap between the base layer and the top layer and makes it just a floating texture if the stretched head is hidden properly. Also if you're wondering, the cross is just 2 custom heads but they are just stretched to look like a pixel-accurate cross

Commands/Worldedit faking light rays with light blocks

was inspired by this phenomenally talented YouTuber named Cooltwo who’s been making these videos about baking light maps into your builds. i wanted to experiment in doing that using light blocks instead of different block textures and while it’s a very rusty proof of concept, i think it conveys the idea/impact on mood in a scene ! all i did was literally “build” the light rays using light blocks. this is definitely something that works better with 1) lower brightness and 2) at a much bigger scale, so id love to see someone take this idea to the next level !

Functional? No. Nice to look at? Yes.

I tagged it as commands/world edit because I used a debug-stick to make the glass panes on the outside whole-width.
