New Player Help MTG Player Here — Teach Me the Ways of Digimon

Post image
192 Upvotes

I grew up watching the Digimon anime as a kid, so I’ve always had a soft spot for the series. I currently play Magic: The Gathering and have been wanting to branch out and give the Digimon TCG a real shot.

I’ve already played through the TCG tutorial app, and I feel like it gave me a decent understanding of the baseline rules, but I’m still pretty lost when it comes to the deeper mechanics and how the game actually plays at a real table.

For anyone who plays both Digimon and MTG, what would you recommend for a new player coming from Magic? Any advice on decks, mechanics, or things I should understand before jumping in would be greatly appreciated!

Been starting to get into the game, got a few starter boxes and such. Saw this at a Walmart, looking like they dug deep into the warehouse to pull this out. Any of them worth it now? They have one for each color

New Player Help Getting into the game again! What next?

(This is a longer post so skip to the TL;DR if you want. Just need some advice)

So I got back into TCGs in general about 5 years ago. Started with Digimon first, then quickly got into Pokémon because it was just so cheap and easy to find a league. Got super serious with it, and ended up selling my Digimon collection because I needed money for Pokémon and I was just not playing Digimon much anymore.

I wanted a secondary game to play besides Pokémon, and tried out Lorcana and Magic but bounced off both pretty quickly. Now with the Digimon renaissance we're in right now with Time Stranger, Alysion coming up, etc, I've decided to start over and get back into the card game. I've been watching a lot of videos and reading up on what the meta is like. Been watching Beatbreak and loving it, saw that Glowing Dawn was a great deck with more support coming(as well as Data Squad/ShineGreymon to a lesser extent), so I picked up 2 of each of the starter decks, a booster box of BT25, and some extra packs that I found at Target. 8 BT25 and 8 BT21(I saw that BT21 has some useful cards for the ShineGreymon deck so I figured it would be good).

Here's my question: Where should I go next? From what I've read it seems like power creep is still a problem with this game so I don't want to waste money by buying old booster boxes if they are not that relevant anymore, but should I buy an EX12 booster box? Seems like TB is a great deck and that I could get a really good start on building the deck from buying a box. Should I do that or is TB not worth investing in? Definitely going to get a box of BT26 when it comes out because it has Glowing Dawn and Data Squad support. My only other question is should I get a box of AD-01 since it has a lot of staples and reprints, or is it not worth it as a new player?

TL;DR Should a new player starting from zero just purchase a box from new sets as they come out, or should I get any boxes from older sets? Is EX12 and AD-01 worth getting? Thanks everyone!

New Player Help What are things to expect going to a regional?

I've never gone to anything for TCGs before, wondering if there are vendors or if it's just a regional area and that's it?

First time going don't know what to expect, what are things to be aware of?

My girlfriend bought me an old ST8 starter and it’s fun but I would like a comprehensive upgrade list on which cards I should swap out to make it stand any chance at all against 2026 starter decks.

New Player Help Atratusmon - How do I fight back

Question in the title. Beat break card.
It seems like once this thing is played, it not only destroys my big boy, but it has barrier and restands. Doesn’t take effects or anything. Seems like I have to play a big blocker to stop it hit that doesn’t matter because it might have barrier or just won’t attack.

How do I kill this thing? It’s doing 4 security checks with a unsuspend combo

New Player Help Can I get a basic explanation of DNA digivolve?

Post image

I understand it’s an alternate cost that involves 2 Digimon already in play. I’m confused if they still need to be stacked in numerical order by level? Gatomon seems to ignore a lot of basic rules I’ve seen until now, how exactly does it work?

New Player Help What’s the point of this Tamer?

Post image

For context I’m new and still learning, the main thing the deck wants to do is suspend opponents cards and Vortex. I bought the Guardian Vortex starter deck and I can’t figure out what Shoto is supposed to do. He doesn’t seem to synergize with any card in the deck. Has anyone played this starter? I haven’t modified it at all, is the deck just buns?

I hope this time around the deck is better put together than my last attempt. If anyone has any advice or constructive criticism I would greatly appreciate it. The deck isn't for tournaments or anything im just trying to build a deck to use for when I play with my small group of friends (sadly no stores near me have digimon days or anything of the sort most dont even carry it)

New Player Help What are good starter boosters for someone who'll have ST25 & 26?

I bought my first 2 boosters the other day, and wont have any proper decks until the Alyssion decks come out. Until then I can pick a handful of boosters, but which ones should I go for?

I own a Jupitermon Wrath from the Time Strangers, and no other red or yellow card, in case that helps narrow it down.

Unchained states that your opponents effects can't trash stacked cards from ExMaquinamon. Does this mean it can't be dedigivolved?

New Player Help Do experienced players know about all the viable cards and their effects?

Heya, do experienced players know what every card in the game is and how they work?

I'm really new to the game (I only play DCGO because there isn't a scene here) and I'm just getting comfortable with the game loop. I play a variant of the ST-21 Hero of Hope deck, because I also bought a box so I can learn with what I already have.

Unfortunately, the game still seems really complex and the latest BT cards (e.g. BT-26) have lots of information on them, it gets very overwhelming for me, a newb.

Even my deck is trash and I would like some advice on what my win condition is, how I can reach it without having my board wiped, a good game-plan for how to improve.

Thanks very much :)) 💖

New Player Help New wannabe player, how to start?

Post image
27 Upvotes

So, I'm completely new to the Digimon TCG and I’m absolutely in love with the card art—it's beautiful! I want to start collecting and, more importantly, playing. I’d love to get some tips from the community on how to begin building my first deck. Is it worth starting with precons, or is it better to just buy singles? Are there specific archetypes or themes to build around, similar to Elves or Slivers in Magic? Also, do you guys double-sleeve your cards? Do you use physical memory gauges/counters? Any tips and tricks from veterans would be highly appreciated!

I’m confused on the multiple digivolve costs, does the standard digivolve require Blue or red? Or blue and red? And what’s stnd mean in terms of digivolve? Everyone keeps telling me it’s something about appmon but I’m brand new I don’t know what that is, is appmon a specific card?

New Player Help Is this tcg to hard for a 10 year old ?

I’ve been wanting to play a tcg with my kid and with how crazy every other tcg is I found digimon are decently cheap. We love watching the anime together so it’s a good match. It just seems a bit confusing.
I haven’t played a tcg in rough 15-20 years.
Any thought and help appreciated :)

New Player Help I don't like Glowing Dawn decks

To the point, it's boring to play with and against, the moment you leave your opponent with a tamer a lvl 3 and 2 memory it's over, Atratusmon can still hit 2 times if that lvl3 came from breeding, then it's just either skip a turn to try and recuperate or try to clap back with an empty board and unless you have an option u can't really get rid of it, plus you can't really skip turn to recuperate since atratus can hit 2 more times get another Digi to hit the last security and then pay 5 to play a lvl5 with rush and can attack when on play. At least other decks that do that stuff need to setup more or have an interesting combo. Getting rid of atratus feels like a bye for now since chirop can just recover it not to mention with the new support it's not going to add nothing to the meta or how it's played it will still be get to lvl 4 quick so u can evo into 5 and option use atratus to arts Digi and attack twice.

Sorry I know the deck is not that good in the meta and that multiple decks hard counter it but it feels like I can only win against it if I set up for like 3 turns and try to pray against the atratus since there is no protection against options yet.

New Player Help Is Machinedramon Ace ME worth it?

I'm getting back into the DCG and like any fan I think we can agree on how cool Machinedramon is and it begs the question... Will it be a fun/good deck?

I used to play the ex1 Machinedramon back when and I remember never getting to work properly no matter how much I tried. Then the Dark masters happened and while sick it wasn't the Machinedramon I fell in love with.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to be burned again on the metal empire Machinedramon Ace without some opinions so here I am.

What does everyone think?

Looking for any advice on my Son's (8yo) DS deck?(I'm building it with/for him*)

It HAS TO KEEP GESOMON.

**Left all the jellymons out intentionally.**

Any tips on what to tweak? What tamers are the best? Options? But I don't want it getting TOO complicated...

Also open to a complete overhaul as long as Gesomon is in the deck. Between DS or Mollusk, DS seemed to have more going for it.

I've never been good at building decks and am still pretty new to the game myself. Any advice is welcome, thank you.

New Player Help New player starting at EX13: No prior cards or staples—how to proceed?

Any tips to a new player joining starting with EX13 to be able to build proper decks? I bought BT20/21 to help me learn the game, and I have BT23/24 queued up for when I'm ready to advance. As I look into building a proper deck, I realize that I am way behind and looks like I've missed a bunch of essential cards that seem to come from limited pre-order-only sets?

Any advice on how to proceed with such a gap? Based on some deck lists that I've seen, some of the necessary cards go as high as $30 per card which suddenly makes me feel like I've made a poor choice of starting now.
