Alert: Police Ticketing Cyclists at 60th Street / Grand Army Plaza for Crossing the crosswalk through pedestrians
Police are ticketing cyclists for passing into he curved part of 60th street & 5th Avenue for "passing through pedestrians at a crosswalk" when the DONT WALK sign is activated for pedestrians and they walk through anyway because it's tourists walking towards / from 5th ave. Mind yourselves and ride carefully.
They're doing it!

When I saw the new asphalt on Brooklyn Bridge Blvd (to Manhattan) being made flush to the island, I was like, "oh man, it'd be nice if they had the bike lane on THIS side and you could ride right onto the island"
And, lo! This morning they had the white lines in place for just such a scenario.
EDIT: I'm sure the plan was in the works prior, but I don't care - THANKS MAMDANI!

PSA This is the FINAL week of Frank's Bike Shop LES
Hey, everyone!
Just wanted to let y'all know that this is the last week that Joe is gonna be at Frank's. We still have classic Schwinn bikes left and a few of Frank's rental bikes to sell.
All classic bikes are 25 dollars and the rental bikes are 50 bucks. We also have like 3 children's bikes left brand new in the box as well (these are 50). Any children's bikes (including bmx) are priced at 20 bucks. We have 1 tandem left ($150) that also needs a bit of work, but I just added a sprocket yesterday and 1 tandem frame just sitting there.
Everything MUST go, if not, they might have to trash them. I'd rather people actually have these beautiful bikes than to scrap.
Please if you can, come through and buy whatever is left. They have also scrapped MANY of the drawers and parts for bikes, so it's gonna be a bit messy. Just let me know if you need anything and I'll do my best to help! You can also just buy bulk stuff and Joe will give you a good price.
Thanks for all your love and support, guys! ❤️
-John

Bike Lane Paint
General Question:
Why is it that only ‘protected’ bike lanes painted green? I feel that lanes might be a bit more respected if both standard and protected lanes would be painted green.

[UPDATE] We talked about it, and Mamdani’s DOT did something about it
Wow, what a difference just a few jersey barriers make. I used to actively avoid this path and now it’s my preferred route.
Now if we could only do something about the trash container juice on Union Square E…

STOLEN Bike stolen from City Hall area
Hoping this is an okay place to post about this. If anyone sees this bike for sale or anywhere else, I would be so happy to be reunited with it.
Frame is 50cm!
I filed a report at the police station and I’m combing fb marketplace/craigslist. Unfortunately I don't have a serial number but I’ve been told to post in Facebook groups. If anyone has any other advice, I’d be grateful. I know odds are slim but I'll do what I can.

Long Fall Ride
Sorry if this answer is in here somewhere. Have the day off on Friday and have never done a ride out of the city since moving recently. Looking for something like 30-50 miles, low traffic, very scenic, ideally good fall leaves, and somewhere to grab a bite at the right time. Planning to leave around before 7am and would like to be home by 2 or 3pm, and willing to jump on a train or ride it all. Leaving from downtown brooklyn.
Thank you!

Northbound on 6th Ave vs 2nd Ave, weekday mornings
[Edit: I wrote 2nd Ave in the title, I meant 1st Ave]
I commute to midtown from Brooklyn by bike. I cannot figure out why the timing of the green lights northbound is so much more continuous on 1st Ave than it is on 6th Ave.
Northbound on 1st I can cover thirty-plus blocks before I hit another red. But on 6th, I can sometimes cross 12 streets before I'm racing a yellow.
Anyone else noticed this discrepancy?

Jay street downtown Brooklyn
Just wondering if the entirety of jay street in downtown Brooklyn on the way to the manhattan bridge bike path is still milled. Did they repave it? I’ve been avoiding it for my morning commute to go over the Williamsburg bridge every morning and I cannot find the information online or read the milling schedule website clearly

Personal Relief
I just had a quick question for my fellow NY'ers that ride bikes.
If/when you go on long rides, where do you use the bathroom? I know one could basically use restrooms at the public parks but my paranoid self is too paranoid to leave my bike out while I go relieve myself.
Any suggestions, tips or tricks? I'm talking about going #1 and yes, this is a serious question...

Help finding a lost bike for an out of towner!
I’d say about a week ago I met a guy named Rodger who was biking into NYC from out of town. I complimented his beautiful Specialized HardRock 26er and helped get over to the Dyckman green way entrance. However I just found out that he’d broken his shoulder and was hospitalized while visiting the city. His bike was locked up somewhere around Times Square, though he isn’t completely sure exactly where.
I figured I’d make a post to help him out! If you’re around Midtown or Times Square and spot this bike, please let me know. Sorry, the photo isn’t the best.

Question Are ebikes allowed in the 1st Ave bike lane during rush hour, or is my motor wattage already an issue here?
hey everyone - moving over from mar vista in LA to the east village next month (right near ave B & east 7th). i'm bringing my helokeep cd20 cargo bike with me in the move and was really hoping to use it for my work commute instead of the train.
my office is up near 1st ave and east 30th in kips bay, usually need to be at my desk by 9 and head out around 6. i saw the thread on here a little while back about the resurfacing on 1st ave and figured that bike lane would make the most sense for heading uptown in the morning, tho i'm still trying to figure out the best route back downtown in the evening.
the thing im second guessing now is the legal side here. mine is a heavy cargo ebike with normal pedals, a throttle, dual 48v batteries, and 20x4 fat tires, and the spec sheet lists the motor at 1,100w sustained / 1,500w peak. i started reading up on the NY rules yesterday and saw the part about ebike motors needing to be under 750w, so now i'm not even sure if this bike qualifies anymore.
are there specific rush hour rules on the 1st ave lane, or is that motor rating already a problem on paper regardless of what time i ride?
if anyone here rides between the east village and kips bay regularly i'd love to hear how strict enforcement actually is if you're just pedaling normal speeds. would be awesome to just strap my work bags to the rack and roll straight to the office, assuming there's a legal way to do it without getting ticketed right away.

Bewsre of the Broadway Bridge
The front tire of my road bike got caught in the expansion joints of the bridge road surface, sending me above my handlebars. Just wanted to warn fellow cyclists to be cautious!

NYC Century Ride- did y'all get medals?
I know I wasn't the fastest out there yesterday but was really disheartening to finally get to the finish line around 6:45PM and find out that they are starting to wrap things up as well that they ran out of medals. How is that even possible? You know exactly how many people are participating! Is the expectation that people don't finish so you don't keep enough medals???

Thanks to bicyclists who helped with accident at PP this morning!
I was running past Center Drive in PP this morning (the hilly area) and witnessed a collision in front of me: looked like a slow bike and a fast bike got too close to each other. The man in the fast bike fell towards the grass on the right, his side got cut up, remained on the scene. The woman who was in the slow lane did a sort of a flip off her bike, and landed head first (both wearing helmets). Her family was near by, perhaps walking up ahead, and came over to her. There was also a dad with a child behind them that abruptly stopped and jumped out of his bike but he somehow caught the bike preventing his child from falling off.
We all stopped and immediately called 911 and an ambulance came within 10 minutes to take the woman who was conscious and moving, but perhaps seriously concussed. Hoping the best for her and her family.
Wanted to come on here to share and thank other bicyclists who came over to check on everyone, and help with diverting traffic. It was a busy day in the park, stay safe ya’ll!

PSA DOT is installing miniature speed bumps that can wipe you out in the middle of the intersection
As a part of left turn calming, DOT is installing a striped speed bump camoflauged by striped road markings. If you're cycling parallel to a crosswalk, watch out for these. I got completely wiped out even though there was zero people or car traffic and I was cycling slowly.
I tried posting the video of these but my post was instantly removed by "Reddit's filters", so I'm not going to give you visuals for this one.

NYC Marathon Course
Do people still ride the marathon course in the morning before the race starts? Had heard race organizers/nypd had been cracking down on this in the past few years but was wondering if this was still possible/popular.

Raised bike lane platform on 7th in the 40s
I was riding down 7th Ave in the 40s the other day and noticed that the bike lane is elevated a few inches. It’s unmarked, and I almost wiped out when I got too close to the edge going into the bike lane - if I hadn’t been paying close attention at exactly the right moment, I would have bounced off the lip in heavy traffic. This seems extremely dangerous, and I’m not sure why they would do this.

Tri Bike - Upgrade Bike Mechanic ISO Brooklyn
Hi all,
I recently moved to Brooklyn a few months ago and just brought my tri bike from my hometown. I'm in search of a bike mechanic who can convert Shimano 105 mechanical to Di2 on a canyon speedmax and upgrade my aerobars as well!
May I ask for a bike shop rec? Thanks all!
