OC Owlbert brought home a lady friend
Noticed a lot of alerts last night. Appears we have a PAIR of owls as tenants. They brought home food all night and shared it. Nothing says romance like tearing apart small birds and lizards.

OC Took a trip to “visit my brother” in Alberta, but really I went to see owls.
My first ever snowy and great grey! And a lucky great horned owl when we decided to head home after a day of looking for snowies.

Before leaving for work today, we found two barred owls have hijacked my gf and my vehicles! Bonus points for the slip and slide down the car. (No damage seen to my windshield😅)

OC Bird Banding on Kelley’s Island.
I stumbled upon some bird banding while visiting Kelley’s Island in Lake Erie this weekend. They caught this pretty female Saw Whet owl. All of her flight feathers fluoresced pink under the black light indicating she hatched this year. I didn’t capture of photo of this phenomenon but this website does a good job of showing what I mean. https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Paired-views-of-ventral-surfaces-of-Northern-Saw-whet-Owl-wings-photographed-in_fig1_232672438

OC My first visitor, kids so excited
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I got an owl box for Christmas and set it up the next day. Last night had my first visitor who popped by three separate times! So excited.
I had a question but you guys might not know because you are not owls haha. I initially had the bottom of the box covered with a mixture of dry grass from outside, leaves , etc. We had a squirrel in there about 2 weeks ago who shoved most of the bedding to the corners and now there's a spot in the middle with no bedding. I was just literally going to get my ladder out this morning and add some more stuff to cover the bare wood, but to my surprise my little owl friend had already decided to poke around in it. As long as there's enough bedding around all the edges to possibly put some eggs on, do you think it's still suitable? He or she is not in there right now so I could always climb up and put a handful of extra shavings in but I don't wanted to disturb their little process. I don't think they would have perfectly laid out shavings in the wild haha .
Anyway, enjoy the video of all the wiggling around. She did this the other couple visits to, really hoping our house gets picked for some eggs 🙏
