Question Pom just had cryptorchid surgery - post care advice

Post image
71 Upvotes

I’m looking for some advice from fellow Pom parents on post-op care!

A few things I’m worried about:
• The cone: How do I make him comfortable with it? Will he be able to eat and drink water properly, or should I get special bowls? Any hacks?

• Keeping him calm: He’s VERY active and loves running around. How do I keep him from jumping on furniture, zooming around, or getting too excited while his stitches heal?

• Protecting the stitches: Any tips to make sure he doesn’t injure himself or interfere with the surgical sites?

Our vet didn’t give us much guidance on post-op care, so any advice, tips, or things you wish you’d known would be super helpful. Especially from people whose Poms have been through cryptorchid surgery!

Thank you! ❤️

Edit: the 2nd incision was done near the abdomen.

It’s sometimes hard to find Pom stuff but I’m lucky I have an orange sable because when you do find it, it’s always orange Poms.

I need help in dealing with poor diagnoses

This is Paris and she will turn 11 in December. Around March or April of this year she started refusing to eat. We took her to the vet several times where she had blood testing and an ultrasound that revealed nothing. She continued to be active with no signs of distress, but getting her to eat became torturous.
We took a trip to California in August to visit family. One evening, Paris started bleeding from her rectum and peeing blood clots. We went to emergency vet and had blood work done along with an ultrasound, but they didn’t find anything. They prescribed antibiotics and Entyce (appetite enhancer) and she started eating like a champ. When we returned home, we took her to our vet. Another ultrasound was performed and a large mass was found on her right kidney (most likely malignant) along with a large blood clot in her bladder. Surgery to remove the right kidney was an option, but extremely risky at her age and very difficult recovery. We opted to give her palliative care not for financial reasons, but because I just couldn’t put her through all that with statistics being what they are.
I totally expected that my girl wouldn’t last more than a week or two at the most and we were constantly looking for signs of pain or distress (I know all the signs by heart). We have seen none of that and it’s been 2 months since her diagnosis. She loves her walks, plays with her brother and acts just like she always has. We have continued with the appetite enhancer and she just now took out her food like there was no tomorrow.
I wrote a book here, so here is my question. Does anyone have any experience with this? I spend each day wondering if it is her last and what kind of longevity I can expect. For reference, her left kidney is functioning normally and all blood tests are normal. Got anything for me?
