The wife has finally realised the benefits!

I'm at work, just got a message from the wife saying the sound was only coming from the TV and it sounds rubbish!

After all the looks of "whatever" and seemingly not being overly impressed by the sound...all it took was my not being there to realise the difference a good soundbar makes.

Had to troubleshoot the solution with her but it makes me happy that she finally noticed how much better it sounds...it's opened the doors so that an upgrade wouldn't be questioned 😄

Sony HT-S40R vs JBL Cinema SB580 - Which is better?

‱ Upvotes

Struggling deciding between the Sony HT-S40R (5.1 with physical rear speakers) and JBL Cinema SB580 (3.1). My priorities are music quality, clear vocals, instrument separation, proper bass which I can feel without muddiness. Intrested in surround sound, but is 5.1 really worth the hype? Does it also matter in music or only for movies?

My music taste- Travis Scott, Don Toliver, Kendrick Lamar, Metro Boomin, Arijit Singh, A. R. Rahman, Sai Abhyankar, Agam, Kaavish, Coke Studio and regional music.

I use Truthear Hexa IEMs, so I appreciate clarity, seperation and detail.

More into music but do watch movies once in a while.

For those who’ve heard/owned or know about these systems:

- Which sounds better for music overall?

- Which has better bass (lower bass which gives feels)?

- How much difference do physical rear speakers make for movies? Is 5.1 actually worth it?

My research:

-JBL is way more detailed, with good seperation and better audio quality, detailed bass, no tight bass, but good rumble. Just lacks 5.1.

-Sony has 5.1, lot of bass, but average audio average clarity.

Current price online:

Sony S40r - â‚č14k

JBL SB580/SB590 - â‚č20k

Samsung Q990f for half off or is there a better option?

‱ Upvotes

First off, my partner wears hearing aids so she is sensitive to noise volume....

We currently have a JBL 3.1 soundbar that I have loved. I bought it probably 5 years ago as a "cheap out until I buy something better" option and just never felt the need to replace it and I'm cheap so I was waiting for it to break. Never did.

We watch a lot of streaming and the volume difference between voice and music is an issue for my partner. She's constantly messing with the volume and spilling popcorn when we go from a quiet dialogue scene into the music for the transition scene. Her hearing aides make it so the volume discrepancy is an issue so I'm trying to find something to up the dialogue. I have my current bar set to dialogue and while it helps I then lose all bass, old tech.

I saw today best buy is running a sale on the 990f for half off, $1,000.00. I want to jump on it but am curious if the newer balancing software helps as much as I hope it will to even out the quiet dialogue issue that plagues newer media.

Is there a better option I should be looking at?

Living room is small, maybe 20x15 with a vaulted ceiling shape but probably only about 10' high if that matters.

Thank you in advance for any insight!

Edit: added price

Recommend me a Soundbar for articulating mount under 55/65” screen

We are finishing out a room in our basement that will be for general purpose entertaining, including televised sports, movies, and light gaming.

I have a nice 5.1 system in our living room, but the layout of this new space necessitates that the TV be on an articulating mount which will likely be repositioned frequently. Sometimes the TV will be pointed toward a soft seating area and sometimes the TV will be panned about 50 degrees to allow the room beyond to enjoy as well. Hence, a set of fixed discrete speakers just don’t really fit the bill.

So, I am looking for a high quality soundbar with a sub (and probably without surrounds). The key is, the soundbar needs to be mounted to the VESA mount in order to travel with the TV and essentially be aimed wherever the TV is pointing.

It feels like the high end contenders I have seen mentioned here a lot include:
- Sennheiser Ambeo Max or Plus
- Nakamichi Dragon or Shockwafe
- Samsung Q900H

Some of these are pretty chonky, so I’m really looking for two things:

1) If you have direct experience with any of these, do you have a strong feeling toward one or another (and feel free to recommend anything else). I’m not looking to overspend if there is something equivalent, but I also expect this to be in place for ten years or more, so I want to do it right and be done with it. Reliability/‘It Just Works’ are crucial.

2) If you have experience mounting a soundbar (especially any of these) below a TV on an articulating mount (with the soundbar attached to/hung from the mount), I’d love to hear about your experience.

TIA and have a great day.

Troubleshooting sennheiser soundbar extremely loud crackling sound

i currently have an ambeo plus for about 4 months and its connect via earc to my lg tv. everything was working fine except the very often (at least once a week) hdmi handshake failure which i still don’t know why it keeps happening, but as annoying as it is i don’t mind doing the reset.

for the past few days, extremely loud crackling sound started coming out of the soundbar when i was watching youtube or plex, and there was even once i was in the apple tv settings app and the crackling happened. the crackling sound was like max volume and woke my family up. i would have to exit the video and it would stop, but when i watch the videos again there is a 50/50 chance the crackling sound goes away. what i took note was it will normally start with small crackles, then if i did not exit the video the crackle would immediately become max volume. so every time i hear any crackles it made me very anxious because it’s way too loud.

are there any kind souls that can help me troubleshoot and give advice on what might be wrong with the soundbar or anything? thank you in advance!

JBL SB590/SB580 vs Edifier R1700BT/R1855DB — Which is best for movie dialogue clarity?

Hi everyone,

I recently tried the JBL SB550/SB560 soundbars, but I was really disappointed with the voice clarity. Dialogue sounded only slightly better than my TV speakers, and in some cases, it was still difficult to hear clearly. I was expecting a much bigger improvement.

I'm now considering upgrading to one of these options:

  • JBL SB580/590
  • Edifier R1700BT
  • Edifier R1855DB

My primary use is watching movies and TV shows on my 55-inch TCL Q6C TV, and my priorities, in order, are:

  1. Excellent dialogue clarity — I want voices to sound natural, clear and easy to understand without constantly increasing the volume.
  2. Immersive movie experience — good soundstage and impactful action scenes.
  3. Bass and music quality — good bass, but not at the expense of dialogue.

For those who have personally used or compared these speakers, I'd really appreciate your advice.

  • Are the JBL SB580/SB590 noticeably better than the SB550/SB560 in dialogue clarity?
  • Would the Edifier R1700BT or R1855DB provide significantly clearer, more natural voices than these soundbars?
  • Is it worth sacrificing surround sound and Dolby Atmos for better stereo audio quality?
  • Which option would you personally recommend for the best overall movie-watching experience?

My budget is around â‚č20,000, and I'm based in India.

I'd especially appreciate feedback from people who have actually used these models rather than recommendations based only on specifications.

Thanks!

LG LG DS70TY(FD) - How to stream Dolby ATMOS / Spatial Audio Songs

I have a full surround speaker setup for the LG DS70TY(FD) soundbar, but I can only enjoy ATMOS content through the PlayStation 5 and the Apple TV app. Apple Music on the PS5 doesn’t seem to support Dolby ATMOS or Spatial Audio. I’m curious how other users are experiencing Spatial Audio with this soundbar model.

JBL Best way to move soundbar off of desk

I considered behind behind the monitor arm on the wall but I fear that might muffle the audio. Other option is mounting under the desk but I haven't found any products I'd trust to hold my soundbar. Any suggestions?

Which Soundbar to get?

Hi, i currently have a LG DS77TY. Next month i move in with my girlfriend and so we bought us a new TV, an LG C6 77'. The thing is, my current soundbar is no match with that new TV. I was thinking about getting the LG DS95TR or the probably better Samsung HW-Q995GH.

Only possible problem is that our couch is L-shaped and stands against the wall. Does this setup work with rearspeakers?

P.S.: sorry for my english

ideal soundbar recommendation without satellite speakers??

My ancient samsung j250 kicked the bucket after like 10 years so looking for a replacement of modern tech.

context:

space (and wiring) is a moderate concern so not interested in external satellite speakers

usage is a computer setup, and a switch/ps5, no TV. would literally sit 1-2 feet away, positioned below computer monitors.

need 3.5mm aux, optical, bluetooth. i assume hdmi arc is standard nowdays

content is usual consumer stuff, youtube, anime, streaming services, etc. lots of non-competitive gaming

that said, what type of setup should i be looking for? 3.1? 3.1.2? 5.1?

are there any models to look out for (i.e., upcoming BF/CM "sales") at around ~$300 usd budget?

I am near a Costco and a Microcenter, if that helps any.

Audio passthrough devices vs Apple TV

For reference I have a Klipsch core 300 and getting an external subwoofer.

I currently have the Xiaomi Tv box 3rd gen, which has audio pass though. Apple TV does not have passthrough but I’m curious how much of a difference would it make for my setup? Or is audio passthrough only important for home theaters? Thank you!

EDIT: I also watch most of my movies through remux files

Troubleshooting Matrixing

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

OK, so I’m sure this has been asked 1000 times before, but I have an Xbox, a fire stick, a laptop, and an Apple TV, and two displays that I want to be able to matrix anything to any display after that on the audio arc outputs. I already have a audio extractor, so I can use the sound system on either display, and that works no problem seemingly. That is all, but I have no idea if it’s actually doing Dolby, but so the TV has just Dolby almost passed through, but they only have the arc and then input two and three. I thought they had more, so what I would like is something that’s a 4 x 2 HDMI matrix switching device that would support or pass through Atmos, so I could put anything on any display and then with the other switch choose which display will be using my audio device over arc. Any suggestions at all that doesn’t cost $10,000

The only thing I could think of is having bidirectional on each input, each one going to its own 4 x 1 for its own television, but that’s ridiculous, right?

What is your go to volume on your soundbar

I have a Samsung 5.1 soundbar. The 3 speakers in the soundbar itself.
2 wireless surround with wireless subwoofer. Nothing crazy special, probably paid around $500 for it.
My living room is roughly 200 sqft but I have kids so I find myself needing to put my volume up to 25-27 to hear just fine. Anything lower I need captions.

Is it my soundbar or do most people need to put volume that high? Idk what’s considered too high.

I remember my dad had a 2.0 channel soundbar and he was using it outside(which is understandable for the volume he put it at) and put it at max volume to be heard from 15ft away.

Just curious.

Troubleshooting LG TV with LG Soundbar produced buzzing noise

On the off chance that someone has the same problem as me, I’m putting this here.

If you have an LG soundbar with a subwoofer, and you have the setting “share TV sound mode” turned on, and you have HDMI arc cable connecting your soundbar to your TV, you might hear a buzzing noise. If you turn it off, the buzzing noise will stop.

Hope this helped someone. This was driving me insane. The repair shop didn’t know what it was.

Samsung Q990F/Q995F 1102 Update

How has the stability been with version 1102 so far? Mine is still running version 1013, and I frequently have to reopen the SmartThings app because the advanced features sometimes disappear. Other than that, it works flawlessly.

I use the app quite often to toggle Night Mode, so the new app could be a good solution for me.

Is Blu-Ray really worth getting with large screen and soundbar?

I have a 86” LG 4k tv and Ultimea Skywave x70 in my bedroom which Im really impressed with. I have some old blu-ray disk from 10 years ago or so.

When researching online - Ai says blu-ray will be a very noticeable improvement over Amazon streaming or Paramount+ through 4K compatible Roku box. Everything looks and sounds really good now. Its been so long I dont know what the difference would be đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž. There is a Sony Blu-Ray player at best buy for $325 that is supposed to be the one to get to handle converting DTS if needed for X70.

From personal experience is it really noticeable and worth getting blu-ray? Is it that much better?

Thank you!
