Skyrim SE Character Creation

I’ve spent over 3 hours trying to get past the character creation stage in Skyrim SE. Ive been unsuccessful on both my steam frame in standalone mode and my new steam machine. Fresh installs on both devices. Game files validated on both devices. I’ve given up trying on the frame but still want to get it running on the SM.

When I enter the character name and hit submit, the name dialogue box goes away but the name doesn’t take and I’m still in character creation.

This happens in game mode and in desktop mode with the game windowed. There’s no hidden text dialogue or prompt hidden under the game window in desktop mode.

I have auto scaling turned on. I’ve also rolled back to the next most recent stable proton version and that doesn’t produce any different result.

All of the suggestions I’ve found that worked for others with similar issues just haven’t worked.

The only graphical issues I’ve seen that could maybe be related is this overlay of text on text in the main menu.

SteamOS on x20

Does installing SteamOS to the x20 essentially provide the same experience I have on my Steam Deck? Looking for a performance upgrade but want to keep the ease of use that the Steam Deck has.

Could the swap in console just be as simple as swapping my M.2 in my Steam Deck to the x20?

help wanted Steam OS Bluetooth

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

Hello everyone ,
I built a pc for steam os a while ago complete with Xbox controller via Bluetooth and everything was fine, worked like a charm.

Yesterday I updated to steam os to 3.85 or 3.9 (I’m now definitely on 3.9) and the blue tooth isn’t working anymore. The controllers aren’t recognizing. They work via cable, I checked the receiver on a different pc with Linux mint, both work on that Maschine.

The Bluetooth indicator is on in ganemode but when I switch to desktop mode it’s of and pressing the button does nothing. I tried reinstalling steamos, switching to experimental, beta, stable and back but nothing works.

I need help to get the Bluetooth working and the controller recognized. The pictures are taken of the Bluetooth receiver I use.

Thank you

help wanted Need a double check, make sure FSR4 is working or not

Okay, so I've been playing Ace Combat 8 on my Framework Desktop 32GB. Default SteamOS install, 1080p lowest settings, FSR Performance. Been loving every moment of it on the couch. Have noticed the usual FSR3.1 graphical issues (boiling, ghosting, etc.) while doing low-intensity things, but once I get into the game, those issues --> out the window.

That said, I figured I'd try to see if FSR4 meaningfully improves the picture at all. To that end... well, let's start at the very beginning.

1) Download the latest SteamOS iso. Create a bootable USB via Rufus in Windows.

2) Install SteamOS. As previously stated, a default install.

3) Install Ace Combat 8.

4) Launch AC8, play roughly 75 hours at 1080p Lowest (including FSR 3.1 Performance).

5) Read up on how to force FSR4, see that you need to use specific versions of Proton (recommended are Proton-GE and Proton-CachyOS). I decide to use Proton-CachyOS.

6) I see it's not listed in the default list of Proton options, even after choosing to show all options in the SteamOS settings.

7) Easiest way is apparently to install protonup-qt in order to install proton-cachyos.

8) I reboot to Desktop Mode, install protonup-qt via the... "Linux Store," I'm sorry, I forget the name of it.

9) Open protonup-qt, install proton-cachyos and associate AC8 with it.

10) Restart from Desktop Mode (restart boots back into gaming mode).

11) You can either force FSR4 globally or via a game's launch options. I choose the latter, but first, I notice that the Proton version still seems to be set to the default Proton, so I set it to proton-cachyos, which is now listed.

12) Restart computer, just in case.

13) Boot the game, notice no difference in image quality, am not surprised.

14) Go to Launch Options, type in

FSR_UPGRADE=1 %command%

15) Boot the game, notice no difference in image quality, am surprised.

16) Restart computer, just in case.

17) Go to Launch Options, type in some other syntax I've seen

PROTON_FSR_UPGRADE=1 %command%

18) Boot the game, notice no difference in image quality, am surprised.

Am I missing something? Does AC8 not natively support FSR4? (Seems it does.) Can you not substitute FSR4 like with other games? Was FSR4 actually being used and the image quality just didn't change much? Is there a way to tell?

Is perhaps my hardware not capable? It should be, but maybe I've assumed too much.

Apologies for the very basic questioning. It's been a while since I last used Linux and my competency in it has deteriorated over time.

help wanted Color banding - 3.9.5 preview

Thumbnail gallery
17 Upvotes

This has been driving me a little nuts, and I'm curious if others are experiencing this, and if so what they found helped.

I am playing on a custom built gaming pc, with an HDMI 2.1 cable running from my Radeon 9060 XT GPU directly to my LG C6 OLED TV.

I experience (what I feel is) pretty significant color banding when playing games on my rig that's currently running 3.9.5 preview (I also experienced this on the Stable branch). See the attached images, specifically around the top left/right edges of the image.

This color banding appears:

  • With HDR turned on
  • With HDR turned off
  • With "Force Composite" in developer options turned on
  • With "Force Composite" in developer options turned off
  • With Reshade "deband.fx" installed and fiddled with/values tweaked

  • With various settings on my TV adjusted (RGB full vs Limited, near-black detail, color depth, brightness settings)

  • With/without HDR brightness calibrated in desktop mode

...is this really just an issue with how the game itself was developed? I see color banding in other games too, even in very bright areas (Cyberpunk 2077 in the daytime sky, for example), so I fear it's something about my hardware or how HDMI is handling things.

In the attached images, I also showed my TV's info page that shows this is displaying at 2560x1440 at (supposedly) 10 bit HDR.

Got tired of my couch PC ignoring the TV, so I made a Pi Zero babysit it

A friend and I built Couchlink because we wanted a console-like experience on the couch without having to babysit the PC or TV.

PC graphics cards don't speak HDMI-CEC, so the PC never knows what the TV is doing. Couchlink puts a Raspberry Pi on a spare HDMI port to listen to the CEC bus. Switch to the PC and it wakes. Switch away or turn the TV off and it sleeps.

Our favorite part is waking from the controller from sleep. Press the home button and the PC wakes up. The Pi then turns the TV on and sends Active Source, so the TV and soundbar both switch to the PC. No remote needed, just like a console.

We've tested it on SteamOS with Vizio and Samsung TVs. CEC varies a lot by brand, so we'd love to hear how it does on yours.

Test it, use it, contribute too if you'd like!

Steam OS is here!

Ever since release I've been waiting for a way to use steamos on the brilliant new msi claw ex 8ai+ and its finally here! following the very simple guide on the github https://github.com/HHHHanasak1/xess-xmx-linux i now have xess and fg on cyberpunk and any game i wish! Im using cachyos handheld edition, we can finally ditch windows and the terrible msi centre m software, no more long shutdown and reboot hang, instant sleep/wake. battery life is nowhere near as good and u get about 30% less performance from windows but the device is so powerful and the trade off is u get an actual usable powerful handheld, also the battery life is about 25%% worse but i am usually plugged in at work when im on down time anyway

EDIT: My bad the performance drop is nowhere near as bad as 30% I had the graphic settings mixed up and I didn’t input an additional command line but it’s on par with winblows in cyberpunk at least unless u enable raytracing I still think that was better on windows. Also still can’t make quick access 2 remap to steam home menu (left) even with deckyplumber if anyone knows a way please let me know my workaround at the moment is L4 remap

Steamos 3.9.5 performance issues

After updating my Lenovo Legion Go S to SteamOS 3.9.5, I have a weird performance issue.

In low demanding games like Megabonk (using Lossless Scaling), I used to get a smooth 120 FPS at 15W. Now, the game runs terribly unless I set it up to 30W+, or manually lower the GPU clock:

- GPU set to 2700 MHz: only ~40 FPS.

- GPU locked less than 2100MHz MHz: jumps straight to 120 FPS at 15W.

Is anyone else having this issue after 3.9.5? Any other fix?

EDIT: I have found out, that setting high GPOU Clock cause CPU boosting only to 1397MHz instead of cca 3000MHz. I have also opened issue on github regarding this problem. My Solution: Set GPU Clock to auto, and it works as intended.

support Need help with UEFI refusal for installation

So, I got an old decomissioned HP Engage Flex Pro-C from my dad, when he was working for an IT company, and wanted to turn it into either a media server or use it for running SteamOS. Issue is, it seems to block the loading of the Kernel every time that I try, and I am starting to lose hope of using it as such, unless the grub kernel loading used a different bootloader.

Does anyone here have any ideas on what I can do to maybe make it work?

Parking cores

Hey so ive looked around and there's not a ton of information specific to steam os about parking cores.

I have a 9950x3d and was interested in if its properly parking cores for game mode or not.

Im a layman when it comes to this so having more info because I'm used to windows tools or other linux distros that have more obvious ways to do it.

The power tool plugin seems to be the only one brought up but mostly in the context of shutting of cores for the steam deck to improve battery on cpu heavy games.

Does anyone have experience with parking cores and optimizing the 9950x3d for steam os?

solved h9ii headset chat-mix not working

hello, i just got the Sony Inzone H9II headset after trying like 6 different headsets. i'm very happy with this one and considering the price, i really want all the features to work. unfortunately when i plug it into a device running steamos, steamos only shows one output when the headset is meant to have two. it's meant to have one for game audio and another for chat. i found someone using a razer nari on steamos and it looks like they have the same issue: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1089711246169848/posts/1545580483916253 . i'm pretty sure they used this script to fix the issue: https://github.com/imustafin/razer-nari-pulseaudio-profile . i downloaded the script and replaced the vendor and product ids to the ones linux was showing for my headset. i also replaced wherever it said "razer-nari" with "inzone-h9ii" and then i ran the script but steamos still only shows a single output device. any help would be appreciated.

support "steam logon error" Portal 2 co-op

I have no connection problems or anything like that on any other multiplayer games, but also I have had no issues playing multiplayer portal 2 on my nobara machine. This issue only seems to exist on steamos. Anyone experience anything similar? Anything I can try to look into to fix this? Machine is connected via wifi from the unit that came with the mobo (MSI PRO B850M-P WIFI). Unsure of exactly which make model the chip is, but will check if it becomes relevant.

PSA: SteamOS 3.9.5 breaks sleep on desktops with the MediaTek MT7927 Wi-Fi card (many ASUS X870/X870E boards). Cause + fix

**TL;DR:** If your PC wakes itself up a few seconds after going to sleep since the 3.9.5 update, and your motherboard has the MediaTek MT7927 Wi-Fi 7 card, disable the onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the BIOS. Sleep works again, and you lose nothing because that card doesn't work on 3.9.5 anyway.

My setup

- ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi (BIOS 1715)

- Radeon RX 7900-series GPU

- Wired Ethernet, USB Bluetooth dongle

- SteamOS 3.9.5 stable (kernel 7.2.7-valve2)

Symptom

After updating to 3.9.5, sleep stopped working. The screen turns off, then the PC comes back on by itself within about half a minute.

Cause

SteamOS 3.9.5 moved to Linux 7.2, which has drivers for the MT7927: `mt7925e` for Wi-Fi and `btusb`/`btmtk` for Bluetooth. But the chip also needs firmware files that the driver loads into it at startup, and the SteamOS firmware package (`linux-firmware-neptune` 20260910) doesn't include them. There is no `/usr/lib/firmware/mediatek/mt7927/` folder.

Here's what happens:

  1. At boot, the Wi-Fi driver can't find its firmware and the card fails to start. The driver stays attached to it anyway.
  2. When the PC goes to sleep, the driver tries to talk to the card, gets no answer and times out. The kernel cancels the suspend.
  3. SteamOS retries with the lighter s2idle sleep mode. That fails too: a USB device on the chipset controller that never responds (most likely the card's Bluetooth half) keeps the kernel busy, and it gives up after 20 seconds.
  4. The PC is back on.

My guess is that older SteamOS kernels had no driver for this card at all, so it never got in the way of sleep.

How to check if you have the same problem

Try to sleep once, then in Desktop Mode open Konsole and run:

journalctl -b -k | grep -E "mt7925e|failed to suspend|Freezing remaining"

If you see lines like these, it's the same issue (the `0b:00.0` address can be different on your board):

mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: Direct firmware load for mediatek/mt7927/WIFI_RAM_CODE_MT6639_2_1.bin failed with error -2

mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: hardware init failed

mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: PM: pci_pm_suspend(): mt7925_pci_suspend [mt7925e] returns -110

PM: Some devices failed to suspend, or early wake event detected

Freezing remaining freezable tasks failed after 20.008 seconds

Fix

In the BIOS, go to Advanced → Onboard Devices Configuration and disable **Wi-Fi Controller** and **Bluetooth Controller** (the names can differ a bit between boards). Save and reboot. Sleep works normally again.

If you need the onboard Wi-Fi

The Wi-Fi firmware has already been added to upstream linux-firmware, so hopefully a future SteamOS update ships it. The Bluetooth firmware isn't upstream yet. Until Valve ships the files, the BIOS switch is the simplest workaround.

Who's affected

The MT7927 (Filogic 380) is on a lot of recent AM5 boards, including many ASUS X870/X870E models like the ROG Crosshair X870E Hero and ROG Strix X870E-E. If `lspci | grep -i mt7927` shows something, this probably applies to you.

Hope this saves someone some time! Cheers
