Mod Post Regarding Instagram / Petco animal neglect posts

Hi all, this is something that I didn't really want to discuss, but after the last 24 hours, I think it's finally time to address this. As of now, under Rule 7 (no spam or low effort posts), any posts that showcase screenshots from social media showing animal abuse, or pictures taken from inside pet stores (chain or not), will be removed as they offer absolutely no productive discussion value, and only exist to fuel hatred.

Instagram posts that show neglect of crested geckos (or other animals) have no place on this forum under any circumstance. The posts are always showing animals in distress, getting hurt or being intentionally antagonized for views. People come to this forum to get away from those sorts of things, not to be subjected further to it, and ultimately, our forum is for educating on proper and advanced husbandry and to help others out.

The mod team has seen especially in the last 24 hours that people are willing to condemn entire ethnic groups for how they keep animals a certain way. At the end of the day, that's racism, and myself and my team are not prepared to let this happen under our watch. Please understand that different countries have different cultures, and that includes husbandry practices for lots of different types of animals - you may not understand why or appreciate this, but encouraging mobs to mass report profiles and posting xenophobic comments is not what this community stands for. Please be better.

If you find disturbing content online, please do not post it here, report it to the relevant people on the platform it came from. The same goes for animals that are photographed in petstores like Petco, PetSmart, PetsAtHome, wherever. Unfortunately, this type of care is something that we know occurs, but we also know this is something that is out of our control. Talk to store managers, send reports to social media teams, but please do not bring it here where people are trying to avoid animal abuse.

If you have a genuine concern for an animal in distress, please report it to the appropriate authority if possible, and give as much detail as you can.

Any questions, please send myself or the modmail a message.

Cheers.

French Toast appreciation post!

I adopted Mr. French Toast three years ago. He was from a hoarding situation where he was being fed every other week. He was obviously underweight, and had some mbd and a deformed area on his spine. But he ate like a champ and was doing well with me. Then he escaped one day. I found him the next day, but his eye was injured. I have no idea how he managed this other than falling somehow, but there was.a bunch of inflammatory fluid in his spectacle, a partial lens luxation, and a cataract had formed. We tried treating with NSAIDs for a couple months to see if the inflammation would decrease, but it didn't help. Finally my vet and I decided an enucleation (removal of the eye) was necessary, because he was presumably painful. Reptiles are so stoic, but partial lens luxations are ouchy regardless of species. His surgery was amazing. It was complicated because they don't have eyelids, so it was harder to close than a cat or dog. But the surgeon did great. Now it was time for months of recovery. And reptiles take FOREVER to heal. But this period was incredible too. We formed such a bond and trust. He needed daily oral NSAIDs and subcutaneous antibiotic injections weekly. Trying to force the syringe in his mouth didn't work for long because he got more combative each time. So I figured out I could put a little pangea on his lip, then when he started to lick it I would sneak the meds onto his tongue. The injections required a little more finesse but he became very used to being handled and he began to really trust me. Present day I can scoop him up (even from his eyeless side where he can't see me coming) and he doesn't even flinch. He is the best pocket dinosaur I could ever ask for. I love him with all my heart. It's been such a powerful experience to build trust with an admittedly not very intelligent reptile to this level. I feel so lucky to have had this experience even though it took a lot of work 💗

TLDR: my gecko trusts me after a long recovery from his enucleation and former neglect and I am infinitely grateful. FT is the best

I included some pre and post op pics in case anyone is curious. Also the last pic is one time he misfired on a mesh hammock and made the coolest pattern on his belly

Handling advice please

First time crested gecko owner here. Im seeing mixed advice online with some people saying they don’t do choice based handling, just paying attention to their gecko’s body language— and the other side of people only doing choice based handling.

For context I visited a really popular reptile shop 5 days over the span of 2 weeks and handled this extremely calm gecko each time. His temperament is perfect

He stays still and walks 90% of the time rather than jumping. Hes 2 years old, previously a breeder so I take it that he was handled often from birth.?

The employees, who have their own cresties (or used to) and other reptiles at home, all are very knowledgeable in proper husbandry as well.

They said he was very good with handling and gave a green flag for gently scooping him (taught me correct way to pick them up)

Not all geckos like being touched but he’s very tolerant of pets with no reaction

Help with stuck shed on toe

Hi, this is Nico! I’ve had him for 11 years with no issues with shedding until now. I noticed what I think is a bit of leftover shed on his toe tonight. I laid down wet paper towel in a container and left him there for 15 minutes and then tried to use wet Q tips to peel the shed off. He let me mess with it for a few minutes but then started chirping so I put him back and figured I’d try again tomorrow. I’m hoping it comes off when he’s climbing tonight but any tips are greatly appreciated as I don’t want it to harm him. Thanks in advance!

Shedding help

Post image

My 7g crested gecko has a sleeve of stuck shed on the bottom half of her tail. It's been there for 2 days. (I finally managed to get a piece off her toe!).

I tried a 20-minute paper towel sauna, but she is way too flighty and stressed to let me gently roll it off with a wet Q-tip.

I put her back in her tank, boosted the humidity. If it's still stuck tomorrow, what is the best hands-off way to help her? Is it safe to dab on mineral oil or a shedding aid?

This has been such a labor of love, but its finally done (enough) for my little guy to move in. Today ill be setting up his lamps. And also lowkey reworking the roof of it bc I was woken up at 1230 last night to my uncle telling me he was ontop of the OUTSIDE of the enclosure 🥴 Had to eventually bait him out with a dubia to catch him. I guess we fixed it though because the photo of him in his snake plant was when i woke up a little bit ago haha. He likes to sleep in the plants.

He's always in his coconut when I go to spray his tank at night but I get paranoid that he's secretly out and I just can't see him lmao and worry he'll jump out when I open it to spray it (even tho that's literally never happened once lmfao) so i check the coconut everyday to see if he's in it but it faces the back of the enclosure bc he seems to like it that way so in order to see if he's in there i have to slide my phone between the back of the enclosure and the wall and take a picture. I made an album of these photos bc i have so many and they look goofy lmfao.

hi! i recently got my new crestie hotpot, she was very adventurous the first few days but has since just started hiding away . the last 2 days she’s found a crevice and stayed there. She won’t eat the food the shop gave me voluntarily that she’d liked ( i know they can be picky) - she’ll give a couple licks if i place on nose / on stick near her face.
she just seems abit lethargic really
- should also mention i have a blink mini cam next to her viv so i can see she hasn’t moved all night either.

1st picture when i got her , 2nd of her now

Side injury?

I haven’t taken him out for several days, took him out today and noticed this 😭😭😭
Does it look like a scab? Did he injure himself in his tank somehow? I’m not going to mess with it and let him be. Bonus of him being cute in the last picture.
