How can you help provide humanitarian relief to people in Sudan? Where can you make donations online?

Sudan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis driven by ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence has created massive displacement, with an estimated 13 million people internally displaced and 4 million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries. The conflict has devastated infrastructure, disrupted food systems, and created widespread food insecurity and healthcare emergencies.

Many are arriving at remote border areas, where services to support them are under severe strain. Most of those displaced are women and children and other vulnerable people such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and people with medical conditions.

r/Ethiopia would like to encourage you to consider making a donation or otherwise supporting these organizations that are providing essential humanitarian relief in both Sudan and neighbouring countries, and would appreciate any help:

What are some organisations providing humanitarian relief to refugees in Ethiopia? How can you help? Where can you make donations online?

Conflict in the Tigray region is driving a rapid rise in humanitarian needs, including refugee movements internally and externally into neighbouring countries. Prior to the conflict, both the COVID-19 pandemic and the largest locust outbreak in decades, had already increased the number of people in need, creating widespread food insecurity.

With the above in mind, here are some organizations which provide humanitarian relief in both Ethiopia and neighbouring countries, and would appreciate any support:

UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees)

Who are they:

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.

What they do:

Currently UNHCR are:

  • Working round-the-clock with authorities and partners in Sudan to provide vitally needed emergency shelter, food, potable water and health screening to the thousands of refugee women, children and men arriving from the Tigray region in search of protection.
  • Distributing relief items, including blankets, sleeping mats, plastic sheeting and hygiene kits. Information campaigns on COVID-19 prevention have started together with the distribution of soap and 50,000 face masks at border points.

Where to donate: https://donate.unhcr.org/int/ethiopia-emergency

History 📜 Tigray: The War the World Is Ignoring, and the Women It’s Destroying

A documentary about Birhan, a Tigrayan woman who documented war crimes including sexual violence against over 280,000 women and girls during the last war in Tigray. Now living in the US, she watches from afar as fighting resumes and calls home, fearing soldiers are again searching houses.

Please note: during war times, unfortunately crimes like this against women and vulnerable people happen. Please be mindful of leaving awful comments. Many women across Ethiopia especially in Afar and Amhara region suffered as well, and it goes undocumented.

I hope one day justice is served!

Jordan 🇯🇴Showed Its Grieving Citizens Compassion. When Will Ethiopia's Orthodox Christians Receive the Same Recognition?

Imagine living in fear that you could be killed simply because you are an Orthodox Christian.
In Jordan, after nine Christians were killed in an attack, the country mourned, and the King visited the injured in hospital. Their pain was acknowledged. Their lives were treated as precious.

What hurts even more is the contrast. In Arsi, Ethiopia, our brothers and sisters are being killed in their communities, homes are being burned, and families are being torn apart. This is not an isolated tragedy. Such violence has been happening for years, claiming hundreds of lives. In the latest reported attacks alone, around 60 people were killed.
Here in Ethiopia, how many more of our people must die before their suffering receives the urgency and attention it deserves?
We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for our lives to matter, for our suffering to be acknowledged, and for our government to protect its citizens.

Today, it is them. Tomorrow, it could be any of us.

May God protect His children, comfort the grieving, and grant eternal rest to those who have lost their lives. 🕊️🙏

Title: This is not Switzerland — it's the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia 🇪🇹

I think one of the most interesting things about Ethiopia is how different it looks from what many people expect.

When people imagine Ethiopia, they might think of ancient churches, historic kingdoms, coffee, or the landscapes of the lowlands. But in the north, the Simien Mountains offer something completely different.

Imagine walking along the edge of enormous cliffs, looking out across deep valleys, watching clouds move between mountain peaks, and suddenly finding yourself surrounded by gelada monkeys grazing on the grass.

Some of the scenery honestly looks like it belongs somewhere in the European Alps. But this is the Ethiopian Highlands, near Gondar in northern Ethiopia.

What makes the Simien Mountains special to me is that they aren't just beautiful viewpoints. They're part of the landscape and life of the Ethiopian Highlands, with unique wildlife, high-altitude villages, and trails that connect places you can't fully appreciate from a road.

I'm a local guide from the Gondar area, so these mountains are more than just another destination to me. I wanted to share this side of Ethiopia because I think it deserves to be better known.

I'm curious: before seeing this landscape, what did you picture when you thought of Ethiopia?

And for those who've visited, what surprised you most about the country?

Always confirm this information on the official website as fees and requirements might change.

  1. Book your in person Appointment

Go to immigration.gov.et and:
- Fill out your personal information
- Choose your appointment date
- Pay the $250 USD fee to confirm the booking

Appointments are held in person at the Ethiopian Embassy in DC, so plan your travel accordingly.

Work Hours are 9AM - 1PM Monday to Friday.

  1. Gather your documents

Bring the following:
- Your expired or soon-to-expire passport
- Proof of your current US immigration or visa status
- A valid ID (a US-issued ID if you have one, not required if you don’t have one)
- Your appointment booking confirmation (print it or save it on your phone)

  1. Day of the appointment

Embassy staff will ask for your booking confirmation, old passport, and visa status documents. They will then collect your:
- Fingerprints
- Retina scan
- Passport photo (taken on site)

  1. Receiving your new passport

Once your application is accepted, you'll be asked how you want to get your new passport:

- DMV Area: Picking it up in person at the embassy when it's ready is usually the easiest option.
- Outside of DMV: Have it mailed to you. Buy a prepaid shipping label (for example, a UPS posting slip) before your appointment, either online or at a UPS store near the embassy, and bring it with you. You can also have someone you know in the DMV pick it up from the embassy and ship it to you.

Tip: If you forget the shipping label, don't worry. Embassy staff have generally been understanding about this. You can finish your appointment, buy the label nearby, and bring it back so they can ship your passport once it's ready.

Good luck!

Reinhard Heydrich: The Nazi Leader Even Hitler Couldn't Control

I just published a new documentary-style video exploring Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most powerful and feared figures in Nazi Germany.

The video looks at his rise within the Nazi regime, his role in its machinery of terror, and the influence he gained under Hitler.

I'm sharing it here because I'm interested in history, World War II, and the people who shaped some of the darkest chapters of the 20th century.

🎥 Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKGzfFjNbls

I'd love to hear your thoughts: How much power did Heydrich really have within the Nazi leadership?

Ethiopia: Beyond the Horizon, There Are People and Countries

Dear Ethiopians,

For far too long, we have behaved as though Ethiopia were the only country on Earth and Ethiopians were the only people competing for opportunities.

But there are people beyond our mountains and nations beyond our horizons.

While we remain preoccupied with one another, the rest of the world is busy innovating, building industries, advancing technology, creating wealth, and competing in global markets.

The world is not made up only of Amhara, Oromo, Tigray, Gurage, and other Ethiopian communities. It is also home to Kenyans, South Africans, Chinese, Europeans, Japanese, and billions of others striving to prosper.

Every hour we spend plotting how to outmaneuver one another is an hour we lose sight of the competition beyond our borders. Our obsession with internal rivalries blinds our eyes to global opportunities and deafens our ears to the sound of progress elsewhere.

We are competing over slices of a small pie while others are busy baking much bigger ones.

Let us lift our eyes beyond our mountains, open our minds beyond our borders, and recognize that our real competition is not merely among ourselves.

The world is moving. It will not slow down while we settle our endless internal rivalries.

It is time to emerge from our illusions. Ethiopia is not the whole world. It is part of a much bigger one.

Do people still buy pirated movies from the shops here? Genuinely curious

Was thinking about this the other day. Back in the day (and especially during covid) it felt like every neighborhood had that one shop with the walls covered in DVD covers, and you’d just hand over a list or ask what’s new. Now with cheap data packages, Telegram channels, and streaming, I honestly don’t know if that world still exists or if it’s mostly gone.
So, for those of you in Addis or elsewhere:
Do you or your family still buy movies/series from local shops?
If yes, what format is it? Burned DVDs, flash drives, memory cards, hard drives where they just copy stuff over?
Is it still mostly Hollywood, Korean/Turkish dramas, Indian stuff, or has the mix changed?
Or did everyone move to Telegram, torrents, YouTube, Netflix with a shared account, etc.?
Are those shops even still open in your area?
Also curious whether it’s an age thing. My guess is older folks and people with slow or no home internet are the last holdouts, but I could be totally wrong.
Not judging anyone, just interested in how this has changed. Would love to hear what’s actually happening on the ground.

Wait milk is sold in a plastic bag in Ethiopia?!

Post image
21 Upvotes

Okay, for context, I'm Canadian diaspora, and I always thought the whole "milk-in-a-bag" thing was, like, a uniquely Canadian thing, like, nowhere else in the world sells milk in plastic bags, right? Yeah, I know it's really only an Ontario and some parts of Quebec thing, but I figured it was this exotic Canadian quirk because of how much the internet makes a big deal out of it. Till I kinda went to Ethiopia and saw this milk bag to be fair, it's not really transparent, so you don't actually see the milk, but still, it's still milk in a plastic bag. So why are Canadians getting the boot for this??

Other Documentary recommendation called “A Fire Within”

I watched a doc last night that follows three Ethiopian women who survived brutal torture during Ethiopia’s Red Terror era under the Derg regime. They eventually flee to the US as refugees. Years later, one of them is working at a hotel in Atlanta when she realizes the man who tortured her back home is not only living in the same city he is working in the same hotel. The film documents their landmark human rights case to try and bring him to justice in a US court.

Im so glad these women found a way to get justice in another country, because we know that back home, so many perpetrators of torture will never be identified, will never face a courtroom, and will never answer for what they did to innocent people. No one deserves to be tortured, especially when a legal system is supposed to “exist”.

And that’s the part that makes this film feel less like history and more like a warning. Watching it, i couldn’t stop thinking about how the same patterns keep repeating. It was Derg, then EPRDF and now the PP each regime bringing its own horrors. In 2020 Tigrayans were being hunted, rounded up, and jailed in Addis Ababa. Then not long ago the same thing happened to Amharas, Oromo and anyone who opposed the current regime.
I’ve seen it with my own eyes when ordinary people, neighbors, pointing fingers and saying “a Tigrayan lives here” like it’s a crime. Some of them never came back and had nothing to do with the tigray people liberation front. The silence and the complicity are horrifying.

It is incredible and devastating that to this day, a man in power can act the same way they did in the Derg era. When will Ethiopia stop this? When do we stop letting this cycle repeat?

If you have Tubi, please watch it. These women’s stories deserve to be heard, and the questions this film raises about accountability and silence are ones we cannot keep avoiding. I'd love to hear what others think if they've seen it.

News 📰 What's happening in Oromia is actually the ethnic cleansing of Amharas

The OLF/OLA/Abiy's secret hand is carrying out ethnic cleansing in the region while making it seem like religious persecution.

To set the stage, there is already a known ethnic-cleansing campaign in the Oromo region by the OLF/OLA militias, focused on terrorizing Habeshas, so this is nothing new.

Most Oromos in the south are Muslim or Protestant, so spotting an Orthodox Christian is a sign that person is most likely Amhara. Religion is used as a proxy for ethnic group, so the ethnic cleansing seems to be religiously targeted, but in actuality, it's ethnically motivated.

It's the ethnic cleansing of Amharas, which collaterally attacks Orthodox Christianity in favor of not only Oromo extremists but also Oromo Muslims and Protestants.
