Official Mod Post Read this before posting

If you've read the previous sticky threads, you can skip this one. There's nothing new here, I'm just consolidating information so that it can all be visible.

If you believe yourself to be a victim of abuse, reach out to trusted friends and family, to mental health professionals, and to the police. Most of us on this subreddit are not qualified to help you, and vetting those who are qualified to help is outside the scope of Reddit moderation.

I'm not trying to prohibit all discussion of non-consensual hypnosis. I do think it's a good thing that the subject comes up from time to time, because it inspires discussion about hypnotic and non-hypnotic psychological abuse, the importance of informed consent, what people can do to protect themselves from manipulators, and what hypnotists can do to protect themselves from accusations.

All of that being said, this isn't the place to get help if you believe that you have been hypnotized against your will. Most of the people here, myself included, cannot reliably tell the difference between a genuine victim of abuse, and someone who is experiencing delusions. So whichever category a person falls in, a lot of people here are going to make the wrong assumption and say things that make it worse (accusing an actual abuse victim of making it up, or reinforcing frightening delusions of someone who is not an actual victim).

If someone wants to make a thread like "Is it possible to hypnotize someone against their will?" or "Someone I care about may be a victim", I'm not going to remove those threads, because I trust that most of the people who reply to them are going to give good advice about safety and consent. But if somebody wants to post or comment something like "I have been hypnotized against my will", that's against the rules here and will be removed, because I am unable to guarantee that you will receive safe and healthy advice here.

Where should I post?

Is the post about being hypnotized without your knowledge or against your will?

I'm sorry, but many people who post this sort of thing are suffering from a psychotic disorder. Not everyone is, but we can't tell what sort of advice to give you without diagnosing you, and it's unethical to diagnose someone you haven't examined in person. As a result, these sorts of posts and comments are prohibited. Please consult with a psychiatrist.

Is the post about difficulties being hypnotized?

You're welcome to post here, but there's also a subreddit dedicated to this subject: /r/hypnotizable

Is the post about sharing a recorded file or hypnosis app?

Is the post advertising, promoting, or soliciting subjects or hypnotists?

Flairs

You may notice that some users have flairs after their names, like "Recreational Hypnotist" or "Verified Hypnotherapist". If you would like a flair like that, this is the place to get it.

To get a new user flair, all you have to do is comment on this thread with

u/hypnoresearchbot flair [X] [Y]

[X] is what kind of flair you want: "hypnotherapist", "performer", "recreational", "mental", "other". Performer encompasses stage and street hypnosis. Recreational encompasses (but is not limited to) erotic hypnosis. Mental means that you have (or are pursuing) a degree in mental health (psychiatry, psychology, neurology). Other is to encompass other kinds of hypnotists, like hypno-anesthesiologists, or forensic hypnotists.

[Y] can be either "training", "verified", or left out completely. Verified will only flair you automatically if mods have seen your credentials in the past. Otherwise, I'll ask you to send them to me.

So, valid inputs include (but are not limited to):

u/hypnoresearchbot flair hypnotherapist verified

(Will get you flaired as a verified hypnotherapist, assuming that mods have already seen your credentials. Otherwise it will flair you as a regular hypnotherapist, and I'll ask you to send me your credentials to complete the process.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair recreational training

(Will flair you as a recreational hypnotist in training)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair performer

(Will flair you as a performer.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair other

(Will flair you as "other hypnotist".)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair mental training

(Will flair you as a mental health professional in training.)

If your comment contains these key words in any order, and no matter how many other words are in the comment, it should flair you, so be careful you don't change your flair by mistake.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask them here.

Other Is the ritual part of hypnosis doing more work than we realize?

I've been thinking about how much of a hypnosis session happens before the actual induction even starts. Putting on headphones, getting comfortable, opening a familiar file, seeing a recognizable visual, hearing the same opening phrases...

How much do you think these rituals contribute to the trance itself? Do you think the ritual becomes a conditioned cue, or is it more about expectation and attention?

Other How to do self hypnosis?

I’m trying to follow the index on the Joseph Murphy sub that says to get into self hypnosis but won’t tell you how at all. I tried lots of ways but they say you have to feel so relaxed you can’t move and like your about to fall asleep and I don’t so I guess I’m doing it wrong? So how can I do it right and not mess it up? On the JM sub they tell you if you didn’t manifest anything you probably messed up your sh so how can I not mess it up? I already tried all the ones I found on Google ChatGPT YouTube TikTok and instead and I research for hours and hours and hours for a year now

Recreational UK Limits full inductions on YouTube?

Hi everyone! I found this video from 2 weeks ago featuring this hypnotist Luke Mindwalker and he mentioned not being able to show the full induction because of a “hypnotism act in the uk”? I did some googling but all I found was that you have to get permission from a local authority to do it in public.

Anyone know anything about this? Is this why there’s been fewer hypnotists with a uk accent posting induction on YouTube?

Couple with Zero knowledge are curious for hypnosis

Hello fellow redditors!

Me and my fiancée were talking about hypnosis and we became curious if it is truly possible to hypnotize another person and make her/him do things or change or anything. We have zero knowledge and we are curious so where can we learn from the basics and how can we use it for each other to improve. We are thinking (Like I said don't know much about it) that we could use it to improve in some part of our life like being less stressful or so. Is it possible to use hypnosis like that to improve?

What are your favorite amnesia hypno files/content creators

Heyy, I haven't been hypnotized irl before but I can get hypnotized and fall in trance if I listen to a hypno file. but I have never forgot my name or experienced anything that involves amnesia. I am looking for files that will send me deep in trance and let me experience something mind blowing. I also wonder if you can experience hallucinations through audio or video.

So, what's your favorite hypno file that you really felt amnesia?

Other Am I a bad hypnotherapist? Did I end up choosing the wrong path? Or was the training I received too specialized?

Hi,

I received certification in Ericksonian hypnosis from a school earlier this year (more than 200 hours of instruction). And ever since I finished the program and started my own practice, I’ve been feeling kind of strange, as if I’m not doing what I’m supposed to do the way I was taught...

The fact is, I turned to hypnosis because I’ve always been passionate about psychology and Erickson’s work, on which I’ve read extensively. But figures like Jung are also highly regarded. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a strong inclination to help people understand their problems and see things differently so they can feel better. I naturally, in my daily life, use metaphors and analogies, reframing, and a lot of questioning to challenge assumptions and broaden the scope of experience and perspectives.

So it was only natural that I turned to Ericksonian hypnosis, which I believed was the perfect path for what I’ve been doing instinctively every day for so many years, all while pursuing my career and learning more, so that my approach would also be more structured.

But...

Ever since I graduated from that school, and ever since I've been observing what all the other practitioners of Ericksonian hypnosis are doing, I've felt completely lost. The fact is that, on the one hand, I use a lot of Ericksonian techniques, but on the other hand, I'm not at all comfortable with the protocols I was taught, the inductions, or even hypnotic phenomena... I find all of this “artificial.” To be honest, I've never really been into signaling, you know, using hand gestures to say yes or no...

But since I feel like I have no right to call myself a hypnotherapist when all I do is talk, using analogies, reframing, and questioning, I force myself to try to tie everything together: induction, levers of change, tools, post-hypnotic suggestions, and that’s exhausting and very stressful, because it doesn’t come naturally to me...

So now I feel completely lost... I don’t know where I stand. And I feel like, in the end, I help people more in my daily life when they come to confide in me, and I naturally use Ericksonian tools like reframing, questioning, and analogies without any induction at all, than when people come to see me for a session and I force myself to follow a hypnotic framework with induction, hypnotic phenomena, and so on.

So either I don't understand hypnosis at all, or I'm practicing hypnosis without realizing it, and naturally don't need all the tools I was taught, or I chose the wrong path and should have become a professional in a different type of therapy, though I don't know which one...

Thanks for your help...

Other What are some fun or good uses of hypnosis you wouldn't typically expect?

I've been into hypnosis for a few months now, and after a lot of practice I have reached a point where I can be more confidently hypnotized. I was previously someone who believed I could never be hypnotized, due to ADHD, Autism, and C-PTSD, as they all affect my processing, focus, logical reasoning, and trust. But, I just stuck to the same few files and the same hypnotist and over time I have gotten much better at falling into trance. Triggers still don't quite work on me, but, they're getting there which is exciting!

Now that I am more confident in my abilities to be hypnotized, I want to start exploring things I don't normally do with hypnosis. Currently I just do basic therapy stuff, like confidence boosting, relaxation, mindlessness, lucid dreaming, and deepening my coping mechanisms like age regression. But now I want to try out something more fun, or useful, that isn't fully standard

Other Can self-hypnosis help you become more sociable and outgoing?

Has anyone here tried self-hypnosis to become less shy and more confident socially?

I'd like to be more comfortable meeting new people and starting conversations without overthinking everything.

Have you noticed any real results? Are guided hypnosis recordings effective, or is it better to work with a hypnotherapist?

I'd love to hear your experiences.

Hypnotherapy Do hypnosis audio work for self improvement?

There's a hypnotist named John Milton that sales autohypnosis audiotracks for self improvement such as help for quitting addictions(tobacco, alcohol, drugs) among other ones like self discipline for exercise or diets as well as boosting confidence. I'm only interested in the addiction part of I'm being honest. They are not that expensive. 40 dollars more or less a month. It's a subscription service. I'm wondering if anyone has had any positive experience with this kind of hypno therapy. For your help thank you.

Recreational I just hypnotised my girlfriend… I didn’t think it would work

So yesterday my girlfriend (19f) said she was pretty sore so she asked me (18m) if I could massage her and whilst I was massaging her legs I decided that it might be fun to try and hypnotise her to make her relax even more. I asked her if she was okay with it and I just started talking about how each of the body parts I was massaging was slowly sinking into the mattress and going to dreamland. This ended up going on for about 10 minutes when I got to her head and I started describing what dreamland was like. I told her she was on a fluffy cloud surrounded by other clouds in a beautiful blue sky. I told her that she loved the clouds and that everytime I said dreamland that the cloud would take her a little deeper down into dreamland. I just started saying soothing things to her and made sure to use dreamland a whole bunch. At this point I wasn’t really sure that it was working she seemed so relaxed (even snoring softly) so I thought she’d just fallen asleep. I also mentioned the fact to her that anytime she wanted to come back to dreamland she’d only need to ask me and that i would tell her: Welcome to dreamland. If i said that phrase she’d instantly go back into trance. I still wasn’t sure if anything was working so when i got back from the bathroom and she was still lying there i woke her up.

Surprisingly she was pretty much aware of everything and found it really nice and relaxing. She even named the cloud which I found so cute. We were just talking and I wanted to see if that trigger worked so I randomly threw it in our conversation and lo and behold it ACTUALLY WORKED it was so incredible she just immediately closed her eyes and became so so calm anyway yeah it was really cool and my gf said she wanted to do it again where do I go from here

Ease me into hypnosis

I am very difficult to hypnotize even though I’m willing.

Question: Is there a way that a hypnotist can use combination key words prior to the subject actually being hypnotized that create a sense of comfort, security, trust and openness to suggestion so that when the hypnosis begins, the subject is more willingly and easily hypnotized? Hopefully these words can later be used by a trusted non-hypnotist to lure the subject into peaceful submission or obedience.

After some good T*C I was chilling and resuming watching the Steins;Gate anime. It was Season 2, Episode 10, and there came minute 9 with 11 seconds. It was a hilariously similar to a typical hypnosis video.

Can self-hypnosis speed up healing in specific tissues?

Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well!

I've had quite a few experiences with self-hypnosis: easing localized pain, relaxing tense muscles, shifting emotional states, and more.

There's something I've been curious about lately, and to me, curiosity is the fire that drives growth, whether it leads to success or failure.

Do you think hypnosis can promote healing in specific body tissues? Could it speed up the healing process, for example with an injury or a superficial skin condition like an infection? (Of course, anyone with a health issue should see a doctor. I'm only mentioning these as examples.)

What are your thoughts? And if anyone here has personal experience with this, I'd love to hear about it.

Have a great day, everyone!

Has anyone ever tried hypnosis to forget someone?

I’m genuinely wondering if anyone has ever tried hypnosis to forget someone they loved, or at least to stop feeling so much whenever they think about them.

I don’t necessarily mean erasing every memory of that person, but getting rid of the emotional attachment, the flashbacks, the intrusive thoughts, and the feelings that come back no matter how much you try to move on.

If you’ve tried it, did it actually help? Did you notice a difference, and was it worth it?

Recreational Recreational Hypnosis for Communication & Grounding in a Plural System

Hello,

I am a recently discovered system of sorts (in therapy but currently undiagnosed), and I was curious about the ways that hypnosis could be used for grounding, helping alters with their own experiences, and improving communication between alters.

I am well aware that this type of hypnosis must be done very carefully, as it has the ability to harm more than help. However, I believe that there are some useful applications of recreational hypnosis for multiplicity/DID/OSDD/etc.

Some of the ideas I had were:

- Small, easily accessible, and self usable triggers to help ground when dissociating. E.x. a trigger that helps us pay attention to our body, our thoughts, or general sensations.

- Using recreational hypnosis sessions to help alters see and be able to experience themselves. This is an idea I had because for my system (with a grain of salt), alters very much desire to be able to see themselves the way they imagine. So, doing a hypnosis story that allows them to see a reflection of themselves would be great for just comfort and perhaps for discovering more of what each alter enjoys physical appearance-wise (as this can help us all make decisions about our actual appearance as well).

- Finally, improving communication between alters is a big step for me right now. Not finding new ones, and not sharing memories or trauma, but rather just opening some physical or auditory line of communication to make it easier to coordinate.

What do you all think of this concept? Are there very specific things I should avoid or aim towards (besides general safety)? And do you all have any additional ideas that may be helpful for all kinds of systems?

Hypnagogic Imagery

The other day I was discussing with a hypnotist about something I noticed when I hit a certain level of trance and how I described it was whenever I'm feeling relaxed and heavy, my thoughts tend to do sort of like a flipping channel thing, where I see feeds of different things, sometimes it just things Ive seen before, maybe experiences I have had in the past, and it's funny because to me I thought that was my mind ignoring the hypnotist and starting to do its own thing, but what he mentioned was that's actually a good sign, it means that my conscious is taking itself offline but the subconscious is still intaking the words that are being said. What's rather interesting to me is it will do that for a few seconds and the snap back, its like my brain panics a bit and thinks "Oh crap, im not paying attention, go back to listening" when I feel like that is actually the wrong thing to do. I can't really control snapping back, but it was just an interesting thought about how sometimes it happens and it feels like its wrong, but its just a natural reaction, has anyone else had experience with this before as the volunteer or hypnotist? Is there something I could in particular to not scare myself into thinking im doing something wrong? Also just a side note, it doesnt actually pull me out of the trance, its just like my inner monitor realizes im not hearing the words, and so I become aware of the talking again.

Where do I look for high quality hypnosis training (already hypnotist) in working with Vets?

I am clinically-certified but now years later I can see that that additional training was broadly defined and was just scratching the surface. I had my first Vet client last week and want to see more of this population that could really benefit from hypnosis. I've also dug around on the internet and have a better understanding of what Vets are dealing with. They can have sleep issues, pain issues, nervous systems are stuck in high arousal states, not to mention PTSD. There is a bunch of training out there so I thought I would post this in the community that might have so good, solid recommendations on getting more specialized in sleep, pain management, and PTSD. My scope is that I am a non-therapist, non-counselor.

Stage or Street Hypnosis Suggestions Received Differently

Hello again!

Sort of piggybacking on my last experience, there was something else I noticed while volunteering for someone who creates hypnosis content.

There was myself and another volunteer who participated in the same video, and to keep it simple, we were both given a suggestion along the lines of "having the overwhelming urge to make chicken noises whenever a particular object came into view, and continuing until the object was taken out of sight."

What I found interesting was how differently we reacted.

For myself, it was a much calmer reaction, just little bursts of chicken noises coming out of my mouth, without any additional movements or expressions. What fascinated me was that it genuinely felt automatic, almost like the noises were already coming out before I had a chance to think about them. I was aware of what I was doing, but it still felt like something I couldn't stop.

The other volunteer, however, was much more animated. Along with making the noises, he was flapping his arms, moving around, and displaying mannerisms you might associate with a chicken.

And that got me thinking.

We both received essentially the same suggestion, yet our responses were noticeably different. I'm personally a very literal and analytical person, so I wonder if that influences how I interpret suggestions and why I didn't naturally add anything beyond what was suggested.

But I'm curious, when someone receives a suggestion, can their mind spontaneously expand on it, adding behaviors or mannerisms that weren't directly suggested? And could someone who's naturally more literal respond differently simply because of how they interpret the wording?

I'd be interested to hear perspectives from both hypnotists and volunteers who have experienced something similar.
