Everything Else Disabled Maid of Honour planning a hen weekend – would you prefer your dream activities or something everyone can join in?
I'm the Maid of Honour for my best friend and currently planning her hen weekend. I'd really appreciate some perspectives, particularly from current or former brides, and especially anyone who has a disabled close friend or Maid of Honour.
For context, I'm a wheelchair user (I've been using one for around six months), although I can walk short distances with assistance. I'm very happy to adapt and work around things, but there are some activities that simply aren't physically possible for me.
My best friend absolutely loves nature, hiking, yoga, rainforests and frogs. We're having her hen weekend in the Lake District, and I've found two activities that I think she'd absolutely adore.
The first is a yoga session in a beautiful yurt tucked away in a mountain forest. It's genuinely magical-looking and exactly her sort of thing. Unfortunately, it's only accessible via a 15-minute uphill hike through the woodland, and the organisers have confirmed there's no vehicle access.
The second is a walk through a temperate rainforest, with moss-covered trees, streams and opportunities to spot wildlife (hopefully including frogs!). Again, it's absolutely perfect for her, but the terrain makes it inaccessible for me.
Both activities would be on the same day, so I'd potentially be sitting out quite a significant portion of it.
Here's my dilemma.
I'm genuinely more than happy to sit these activities out. I'm organising this weekend for her, not for me, and I want her to have the most wonderful experience possible. I don't feel that everyone needs to participate in every single activity, and there are plenty of other things throughout the weekend that I'll be able to enjoy with everyone.
But I'm conscious that she might feel guilty about me being left out, or that knowing I'm sitting somewhere waiting for everyone might take away from her enjoyment. She's a very thoughtful person, and the last thing I want is for her to feel uncomfortable or responsible for my limitations.
The alternative is to find more accessible activities that we can all do together. I've been exploring other yoga venues and nature experiences, but so far none quite captures what makes these particular ones so special.
I suppose I'm trying to balance two things: giving her the experiences I know she'd absolutely love, and making sure she can enjoy them without feeling that someone important to her has been excluded.
I know the obvious answer might be to ask her, and I probably will, but I'd really like to understand how other brides might feel before putting that decision on her. I don't want her to feel obliged to choose the accessible option simply because I've raised it.
So, particularly to brides:
- If your Maid of Honour or a close friend couldn't participate in an activity you really wanted to do, would you still enjoy it knowing they were genuinely happy for you to go ahead?
- Would you rather compromise slightly on the activity so everyone could participate?
- If you've been in a similar situation, what worked well, or what do you wish had been handled differently?
And I'd equally welcome perspectives from disabled bridesmaids or anyone who's organised something similar.
I'm not looking for reassurance that I should be included in absolutely everything, or that the bride should always come first regardless. I can see good arguments for both approaches, and I'd genuinely appreciate hearing different perspectives.
Ultimately, I just want to give my best friend a brilliant weekend that she'll remember fondly. 💚
