Pattern/Tutorial Beginner's Guide & Free Patterns

Hello, everyone! (Repost, because of link issues)

I wrote a fairly comprehensive beginner's guide to tools, materials, hardware, and leather. It has basics, a ton of tool upgrades you can make as you grow in the craft, and some free patterns. People have been asking me for it here and there, and I've been sending it to them individually. But now I've gotten it to a point I'm happy with (of course, it's being edited continuously), and I'm ready to share it with the sub.

Here's the link to the guide!

Also, here's a link to a video I shot to accompany it: Beginner's Leathercraft 101

Quick note, I started writing this guide before I became a moderator here, so I hope it doesn't come across as neglect on part of the sub's Wiki, which needs an overhaul. I'll be pinning this to the sub for a while until I have time to dive into the Wiki and clean things up, and hopefully it answers newbies' questions in the meantime. If anyone has any feedback or suggestions to add to the document, please let me know! Thank you to everyone who commented on the last post.

Community/Meta How would you change this sub?

Hello, everyone. Rather than make changes to the sub based on my own goals/desires, I wanted to ask the community. Is there anything you would add or remove from the sub? Any rules changes you'd suggest implementing? Any suggestions you have for the sub in general? If I see enough concensus around a certain suggestion, I'll consider making those changes moving forward. Let me know!

Obviously the sub is growing daily, and it's doing great. The formula is working, so I'm not looking to make big sweeping changes. I'm just wondering if you've ever had an idea that you feel would make this sub even better for you and your fellow leather crafters. (Bonus points if you have ideas for preventing the incessant "leather repair/is this leather" posts, lol.)

Holsters/Sheaths My First Knife Sheath

I got the opportunity to make a sheath for a knife maker I’m acquainted with. I was fortunate enough to have someone who does this regularly to run my ideas by. I typically make wallets and bags, so it was fun to change it up a bit. If I could go back, I’d raise the buttons up a bit on the belt loop, but overall I think it turned out nice.

Hello! I've finished another bag, and I'm curious to hear what you think about it.

Cheers!

PS. I also made the strap from s-c-r-a-t-c-h (reddit AI protection does not like this word?), since it's not included in the pattern.

Belts/Straps First leather project - Mandalorian belt (feedback welcome)

Hello all! I’ve been interested in trying out leather working. I’m doing a Mandalorian costume for Halloween and decided it was the perfect project to explore leather working. I think I want to continue dabbling in leather working—

Any feedback or tips are welcome-this is far from perfect, but overall for a first project I think I did okay.

Here is my analysis-
Needs improvement: straight hole punching for stitches, holster - leaving more room between the edge and the stitches. Make sure punch holes in middle.

Things done well - wet forming, saddle stitching, creating my own patterns, burnishing??

Small Goods Halloween mushroom charms I cut from leather scraps (jack-o'-lantern grins, grumpy faces, and a bitten-cap one)

Post image
19 Upvotes

Made a little Halloween batch this week. Each one is hand-cut from leather.

The caps are scraps in different textures (smooth white, red and pink suede, black, olive), and each one has its own face on a natural leather stem.

The bitten-cap one turned out moodier than I planned, and it's my favorite so far.

I'm still figuring out the spacing of the cap dots so they don't weaken the leather. Any tips, or face ideas for the next batch?

Tips & Tricks First 3 pairs of shoes I made

I have experience making bags, armor and wallets from leather, but not so much with shoes. In the pictures you see the three pairs that worked, there are also others that did not (in total 7 f*ck up individual shoes). I settled with 2.5 mm (6 oz) veg tanned leather, with no additional lining, makes it simpler to make and so far I am not sure where the additional benefit would be.

So maybe here are some people with more experience and can tell me:
1. why making lining?
2. whats your general take on using only one layer of veg tanned leather?
3. I heard the longer you wear leather shoes the more comfortable they get, do they ever get more comfortable then regular shoes?

On the shoes: brown ones were first, it's with the flesh side outwards, makes sliding in easy, but gives less support because of that. The flayed feet were 2nd, super tight fit and segmented to not bend when walking and they are sewn only on the inside. The purple ones I made recently, there I tryed out cut outs and I really like them and they do still need to walked in more.

I've never worked with leather or sewn ANYTHING. I can't remember if I saw a pack of scrap leather or the pattern on Amazon first, but I put them in my cart and the journey into madness began....

I'm pretty sure I should have started with something more beginner friendly, but you don't know what you don't know. The acrylic pattern comes with no instructions or tools, so I also added a small beginners kit. Between YouTube and reddit I soft brained my way through it. I found better advice/tips as I worked on it, but also wanted to complete a NOOB project to compare it to later.

Notes

I know I need to learn saddle stitch and other stitches

I learned the difference between veg and chrome tanned, with weights

Im getting better needles(John James), stabbed myself a few times

Just got a stitching pony, tokonole, strop and polishing compound, and sandpaper.

THIS IS A HOBBY, NOT A BUSINESS. ENJOY THE RIDE.

Wallets Tooled long wallet

Hi all, I've been doing leather work for a few months and this is the third project I've done. Still trying to get my stitch lines straight and consistent but I think it came out alright. Also started learning tooling This is a basic Joe Melling tooling pattern.

Wallet pattern is a slightly modified Corter Leather pattern. I felt the wallet was a little fat so I added a strap and snap. Plus it allows me to use these snaps that I love.

Things I would change or do different:

The strap feels a bit thin. Also the piece that the zipper is attached to is shorter than the front, which makes the left edge not as thick as most of the other edges. In the future I would just make that whole zipper face the same cut as the front face, which also making a backside for the strap.

Stats for those that care:

Leather: 1.5mm Tandy economy vegtan (was 2mm but skivved down)

Hand dyed with Fibings SaddleTan pro dye

Tooling antiqued with fiebings Mahogany antique finish

Thread: Ritza 25 Tiger thread, 6mm. Burgendy?

Stitch spacing: 3mm (8.5 spi)

Edges sanded then dyed with fibings dark brown then burnished with Tokonole

Total work time: est. 8-12 hours.

Community/Meta What is the camera/microphone set up y'all use for your videos and social media?

I reallllly need to start making videos and things for my, currently dead, social media so I can try to get my brand atleast SOME eyes on it. I have no idea what cameras or mics to use though. Ring lights like the classic tiktok stuff? How do I do the footage angles and clean audio all the leathercrafters seem to do? There is so much stuff out there I'm not sure what to get :(

Tips & Tricks Tip on burnishing dyed leather

• Upvotes

I have seen information floating around on the dos and donts about dyeing leather and of course tons of information about burnishing. One little side note I haven't really seen mentioned is Do Not oil the edge of the leather you intend to burnish before burnishing. It will make it exceedingly harder to get a good burnished edge.

I personally burnish edges after I dye it (you can burnish before dyeing but it will affect dye not penetrating the edges which some people like the look of), then oil the leather, then seal it. I only added this paragraph in case someone hadn't seen that info dozens of times from other sources.

I feel like most people wouldn't even run into this issue since they mainly just oil the top of their leather. However, I have seen it happen and also it's not outside the realm of possibility someone would want to also oil the edges of their leather.

Video Tea cup holster

3rd year anniversary is traditionally a leather gift, and my wife loves tea so a tea cup holster made sense. I have done a bit of leather work in the past but nothing too terribly major and haven't tooled anything before. I learned a lot of wrong ways to do things! I do outdoor gear so I have a cylinder arm walking foot that has the capability to do leather but also hand sewed some parts. Wife is happy with the gift which is the only thing that actually matters.

I used inkscape to create the pattern, not sure if there's something better but I'm very open to suggestions.

Question Buying leather

Hello!

I live in France and wanted to buy some leather from A&A Crack but I heard that the VAT can be different since it’s based in UK and also that there are customs regulations/ fees to pay in supplement.

Did anyone ever buy leather on A&A Crack from UE and had been in this situation?

Thanks 🙏

My first project for my daughter, a matching bag to mom's! This is a half scale purse, I even scaled down the stitching to my finest iron, the one I typically use for watch straps. Saddle stitched with bonded nylon thread so hopefully it will survive the toddler days. Perfect size for a few dinky toys and a couple Nins. Banana (small) for scale
