Honey hunters in Nepal harvesting from colonies of the world's largest honeybee. When these bees feed on rhododendron, their honey aka Mad Honey contains grayanotoxin, a compound that lowers heart rate and blood pressure.
The dark slabs under the overhang are combs of Apis laboriosa, the Himalayan giant honeybee. Each colony builds one open comb straight onto the rock, which is why the harvest is still done from rope ladders.
Why it's worth the climb: when these bees work a rhododendron bloom, the honey picks up grayanotoxin, which lowers heart rate and blood pressure. Communities in Nepal have used it as a traditional remedy for generations, and abroad it's sold as "mad honey."
