Some of you have been here since the very beginning. Some of you found us last week. Either way, I want to start with a thank you.
About four and a half years ago I started Big 4 Transparency with no idea whether anyone would care. I'm a CPA, not a developer, and I taught myself how to build a website because I was tired of the fact that none of us had a straight answer to how much we should really be getting paid.
What happened next genuinely moved me. You showed up. You submitted. You told your coworkers. We've now collected over 22,000 compensation submissions, and the messages I get (someone using this to negotiate a raise, or realizing its time to move on to the next firm) are the reason I've kept at it. That trust also gave me a platform I never expected to advocate for all of us at conferences and out in the profession, and even to contribute to research (we were recently cited in our first academic paper, with a several more on the way actually helping shape policies around accounting).
Now the honest part. I haven't kept the product moving the way you deserved. I've been heads-down cleaning data and getting information out, and the truth is that building features as a non-technical person was hard and the old tech stack made everything harder than it needed to be. Eventually I hit a wall and realized I owed this community a lot better. So I put my head down and did a full rebuild from the ground up.
And today I'm excited to share that it's finally live!!!
A few of the things that are new:
The biggest change is one that will keep paying off going frward. The new tech stack means I can ship fixes and new features dramatically faster than before. That's the part I'm most excited about.
I want to be clear that this is not the finished product. I'm building this for you, and I genuinely want your input on where it goes next. Feature requests, ideas, things that annoy you, bring it all on.
A couple of things on the horizon: I'm planning a webinar on getting the most out of your talent review (since a lot of you have one coming up), and I'm looking into how to offer CPE on the podcast content we put out.
This site has only ever been possible because of you. Thank you for being part of the journey so far. I'm more optimistic than I've ever been about how useful this thing can be and honestly, this feels like the start of a new era.
We're just getting started. 🙏
Happy to answer anything in the comments.

Hey All, as the subreddit has nearly tripled its userbase and viewing activity since I first submitted the recruiting guide nearly two years ago, I felt it was time to expand on the guide as well as state some posting guidelines for our community as it continues to grow, currently averaging over 100k unique users and nearly 800k page views per month.
This accounting recruiting guide has more than double the previous content provided which includes additional tips and a more in-depth analysis on how to prepare for interviews and the overall recruiting process.
The New and Improved Public Accounting Recruiting Guide
Also, please take the time to read over the following guidelines which will help improve the quality of posts on the subreddit as well as increase the quality of responses received when asking for advice or help:

Holy guacamole, AI is dumb. I have a whole bunch of non-accountants running stuff through AI trying to tell me how to do accounting. And it is so wrong.
I don’t think people get, it’s way more than just debts and credits. There is judgment calls, there’s what you can support, there’s processes that are dependencies. There’s corporate structure stuff and a lot of that exterior knowledge that isn’t really described when people present something on face value. And that’s where we come in, cause we know like, hey, you gotta look for these other things or hey, you gotta ask more questions and just say what can we capitalize .
And let me be clear, AI with accruals and reconciliations, I’m pretty thankful for that help, but in reality, if you got your processes clean, it’s not that big of a lift

I was looking at the company’s proxy statement for this year and holy fucking shit, the HR SVP made $900k in total compensation. $360k base, $340k bonus, and another $200k in stocks and other incentives 💀 HR???

When I go into my local office once a week, I’ll have to be on Teams calls all day long given that every person from my team lives in a different state than I do.
It just so happens that everyone else from my team also happens to get to stay 100% fully remote since they all don’t live anywhere near an office.
Therefore, I’ll be the only one from my entire team who has to go into an office (while everyone else stays 100% fully remote on my team).
Anyone else have something similar happen and what did you do?

How long did it take you to achieve this?
I am now a member of the club
It isn’t even hard, i don’t understand why interns are so intimidated by it
30 minutes every day for a week can you get 70% of the way to navigating without a cursor

If you guys are salaried in California your employer is legally required to pay you a minimum of about 70k. Google it. My HR person didn’t know their ass from their elbow, surprise surprise, and I got a nice pay bump because of it.

I hate this shit so much. I just wanna hunt, eat meat, and have sex. Why tf was I born in this timeline where I gotta stare at screens and go on mf teams all day. I don’t wanna stare at a screen for 8 hours and sitting down all day doing boring ass shit anymore. I’d rather be a hunter gatherer and be free in nature. The native Americans had this shit down to a science. Fuck Columbus

I just took my first midterm for Intermediate Accounting 1, which is relatively just harder content than Foundations Accounting (not first year accounting, its like slightly easier intermediate) which I did really well in. Walked out of the exam feeling super bad about it and checked to see what I thought I did right, to see I clearly missed the mark on it.
It felt so much harder by a landslide than foundations accounting which I struggled with at first, but I was wondering if it is normal to feel completely knocked over by intermediate accounting (at a Canadian university). Thank you!!

I'll go first. I ended up in accounting (non CPA) because I struggled with that subject the most in grad school and I'm a glutton for punishment. I went back to grad school later in life and somehow ended up with an entry level position in accounting when I finished, and 6 years later I am still doing it. Do I love it? No. Do I even like it? Also no. I wanted to leave (I work in CAS) but found a remote job doing it and figured it would be crazy to turn it down. But if I scroll on Tik Tok sometimes and I would love to be an influencer. Yes, crazy I know. I have a theory that no one really "likes" accounting and we would all do something else if we figure out how. So what do you really want to do?

I’m a senior accountant working for the regional subsidiary of a group with revenues ~500m. My region contributes around 100m of that.
We got a new controller just before Christmas, and had apparently never used Oracle even though he’s been in accounting for 20 years. No problem with that, but he completely refuses to learn. He’s been here a year but doesn’t know how to run a TB or transaction listing, just completely reliant on others to run all of his reports.
The audit team sent a request while I was on leave, and it went unanswered for more than a week because he “wasn’t sure how to run the information they wanted”. Literally all they wanted was a transaction listing for a specific account, but he didn’t think to even google it. I know this guy is making absolute bank, and it’s baffling to me how he’s made it this far.
E: I feel a lot of responses are over-estimating how high up this guy is in the company. He manages 3 people (me & 2 others in a different country), none of whom have any management responsibility, and the hierarchy is him -> local FD -> Group FD -> Group CFO. We’re not talking about the no.2 guy in finance who’s meant to be driving strategy, his remit is very much financial control and compliance.

I’ve been in AR for 5 years. Decided to go back to school to get my masters in accounting because my bachelors was in a different field. 75 applications and 2 interviews, and nothing for a staff accountant job. Talked to 3 recruiters. They all seemed eager to help and then completely ghosted me. First interview I had I got to the final round then was rejected. Another interview I had a phone screen and never heard back.
The job market is an absolute joke. I’m thankful to be employed but I didn’t go back to school to be in AR the rest of my life. Tried moving up at my current company and have to deal with workplace politics and favoritism bullsh*t.
Did I make a mistake? Then we hear about Microsoft layoffs. The whole point of me returning to school was to be able to get better higher paying jobs. I’ve given up on the job search already and my motivation is at an all time low. I’m also not feeling challenged in my current role anymore and I’m just over it.
Now what?

Can you relate?
More. I need more.
More pivot tables, more xlookup, vba, conditional formatting and macros
It feels quite nice when you get into that state

I’m doing a master in accounting, and I think everyone knows how the workload can be for accounting especially for a short program. I haven’t been getting interviews lately and it’s honestly one of the only things that was keeping me going.
Before my studies I took a gap year but getting interviews for internships/jobs genuinely motivated me. Now it’s nothing and I find it hard to focus when studying for a test because I think instinctively my body feels like I’m doing it for nothing, that it’s just a waste of time. Does anyone else feel the same way??

I’ve been seeing a lot of entry-level job postings offering around $40k–$55k, and I’m curious if that’s actually the norm for recent graduates.
Just trying to get a realistic idea of what other recent grads are making!

I’ve been out of the game for a while but im trying to get back in. I’m struggling to find internships. For either summer 2027 or winter 2028. In my area summer 2028 is not out yet. They have a different cycle here I guess. Rate my resume. What am I doing wrong that I’m not getting any interviews (like forget offers at this point, I’m not even getting interviews)
r/Accounting • u/Intelligent_Cap_6012 • 1h ago
Have been not received any interviews with this resume through cold applications. Any advice for the resume?

I'm not saying that the Big 4 in the US, EU, Asia, SA, etc. don't get into hijinks. But I feel like the Aussies are always stealing the show. What is it about Straya that leads to so many high profile accounting scandals? Is it because it was quite literally colonized by criminals, or on the contrary, do they have enough whistleblowers and competent regulators to catch this activity? Is it somewhere in between? Really curious for some insight into the matter from the boys and girls down unda.

I did 4 interviews for a company, got a call last Saturday that I got the job, fill out the paperwork, and they called me today saying that the company took down the job and is steering another way.
Is this normal? I feel like crap now. I thought that everything went well.
r/Accounting • u/Destined-2-Fail • 6h ago
Because I sure do.
Like many others I went into this line of work because I wanted stability and an okay wage.
Well, this field is not stable. Offshoring and AI are massively eroding this field. Anyone who does not think AI will destroy this line of work has their head in their sand. Not only that, but perfection is the bare minimum needed in this line of work. That is because managers can and will fire you at a moment's notice if you are not perfect.
There is also no money to be made either. I have been trying for five years now and still have not made more than 50k a year in any accounting job that I have had.
And with AI advancing at a rapid rate, there seems to be no point anymore.
If I had to do this all over again, I would have gone into healthcare. Does anyone else regret choosing accounting?

I’m a 26M with about 4 YOE currently working as the accounting supervisor in a large municipal environment. I report directly to the controller and work closely with our financial reporting manager (CPA) to prepare our Annual Comprehensive Financial Report. Current comp is just over $73K, which is below market rate for my area, but I have great WLB and benefits (never over 40 hours a week, plenty of PTO, three months paid parental leave, and $0 health insurance premiums for my family of three).
My state recently passed legislation that created an additional pathway for CPA licensure. In lieu of the 150 credit hour requirement, all you need is a bachelors in accounting and 2 years of work experience signed off by a CPA.
I plan to stay in local government for the foreseeable future, and I’m debating whether or not it’s worth pursuing the CPA designation. I don’t think it would do much for me in the short term, as there’s already talks of promoting me to accounting manager, but could it help me in the long term? Really, the main reason I’m interested at this point is the prestige and being able to tell people that I’m a CPA.

I was rejected for an entry-level role. I emailed the hiring manager and he said the interviewer felt that our conversation lacked depth. He said my questions about the role also lacked depth too. He said this role requires collaboration and discussion, which I supposedly did not show on a deep level in the interview. I did research the accounting firm’s (niche) industry so I thought I was prepared and I even discussed a niche thing about the field in the interview.
I am a little taken aback. How do I show more “depth” next time? Should I come off more academic? I truly want to make this feedback actionable, but I don’t know how to. Any tips for me or discussion about the feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks
