Assistance 44F Adelaide, apparently I need some actual friends šŸ˜‚

EDIT: For those interested u/doge_on_a_roof has created an Adelaide Discord Group for all of us to organise a meet up for those interested!!! The discord is https://discord.gg/6j6jVZSnt

I've realised lately that I miss just talking to people without dating or anything else being the point.

I'm 44, into gaming, horror, manga, weird internet rabbit holes, space, cryptids, psychology, music, 3D printing and slowly teaching myself game development/Unity/Blender. I'm also perfectly capable of becoming interested in some completely random subject for three hours because someone mentioned it once.

Mostly looking for people around Adelaide to chat with and potentially become actual friends with if we click. Coffee, movies, gaming, wandering around somewhere interesting, sending each other ridiculous shit at inappropriate hours, that sort of thing.

Men or women are completely fine.

Tell me something you're currently obsessed with and we'll see where the rabbit hole goes. šŸ˜‚

Assistance Looking for the guy I was a witness with for a car accident today at Croydon Park because you were cute.

Okay this is a long shot and pretty damn cringe, but this morning I was a witness for a car accident along with a random guy who I thought was really cute.

Obviously at the time I was focused on the accident (everyone was fine, it was minor) but I didn't feel like it was appropriate to flirt with him or ask him for his number, but as soon as I left I though damn, that guy was cute and I'll probably never see him again.

So here's my first reddit post, if he sees this and is single and thought I was cute too, please send me a DM. 😊

Update: No luck. Learn from my mistake and shoot your shot when you have the chance.

If you’re struggling with the heat today bathroom tiles are a great relief. Also, a kitchen hospo trick: Lay a tea towel down on a counter, put a line of ice in the middle then roll it up. It can then be tied around your neck (can use a hair tie to hold it on). It’s cold at first but the ice will eventually start to melt. It then drips onto your shirt. Keeping you a bit cooler. Look after yourself today :)

Assistance Looking for advice on what to do about persistent illegal parking situations.

I live directly across from a primary school and almost every time I need to leave or return home during pick up or drop off times, my drive way has been partially blocked by a school parents and prevents us from being able to leave the property until the parent comes back.

I have contacted both the school and council but have yet to resolve the issue, this has been ongoing for years now. We are a 2 driveway/4 car household so it is an issue we deal with on a regular basis. We try our best to avoid coming or going during these times but sometimes it cant be avoided.

Most times the parent has gone in to collect the child and you have to wait until they come back, some parents are willing to move when they see you trying to leave, some parents are not very considerate at all and will argue back with 'Just wait, I'll be gone when my kid gets here.'

Its a regular occurance to see neighbours outside telling parents to move their cars or waiting on parents to return to their cars whilst trying to get in or out of their drive ways.

Im asking for advice on what to do next, as council wont send out a parking inspector and contacting the school to notify parents that this is illegal and an inconvenience to the residents hasnt seemed to have any effect.

Hi,

I’ve come across this little guy who’s clearly not okay in a shopping complex in Munno Para. I’ve been advised that fauna rescue and veterinarians would not be inclined to help as he’s not a native species. I can’t take him with me but I feel awful leaving him here. Any suggestions?

Gm, mates, I saw this guy right outside my door. Is there a way I can help him or anything that I should do, any guidance is appreciated.

Update: Called SANAR but they are open after 8. Then contacted Fauna Rescue SA, they asked me to contain him in a box by putting a towel on him and picking him. It woke up but went back to sleep. Looks weak. A volunteer should come and pick him up in a few hours, as I couldn't go to the vet.

Update 2 (3hr after original post): Wildlife Services came to my place and took the little fella. They said he looks healthy and young enough to just get out of the pouch so might have crawled out and fell. They said they are usually in pairs so they looked around for the twin. They will take him to the vet and then to a carer, and will update me about his health. After he is healthy and can climb a tree, he will be released nearby.

Assistance I have to wait more than five years for an appointment at a public hospital just to see a doctor - and I'm just one of many in the same situation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Category 2 semi-urgent

Today I received a letter from SA GOV that the public hospital Outpatient Department is offering appointments to referrals of the same category and urgency received in January 2020.

It's now October 2025, which means the wait time is 5 years and 9 months.

I googled, Category 2 (Semi-urgent): Procedures that need to be performed within 90 days.

I could understand a delay of double that time, maybe even six months. But a current wait of 69 months is more than 23 times the recommended timeframe.

In 69 months, my condition could have progressed to cancer - or I could have died.

And unfortunately, during the waiting period, I unknowingly passed the disease to my 5-year-old daughter.

Assistance Stupid question - dentist in adelaide (preferably east) that won't shame me?

TW: yes, this is kind of gross.

I'm quite young (under 25) and have had a horrible habit of not brushing my teeth, it's maybe a few times a month at best. All I can do is try to be better from now, but that's beside the point. My two back teeth on my right side have grown in diagonal, and in combination with dental hygiene have two big fat holes in them.

I don't want this to affect the rest of my mouth, and I want to bite the bullet and have them removed or fixed or whatever. But I'm so scared. In a great moment of weakness I'll admit I'm so scared. I've been to the dentist maybe a handful of times and don't know what they've said after any of them- probably something along the lines of blah blah blah cavity blah blah followup that's never gone through because I was dependent. This was a few years ago now.

Does anyone know dentists that will make this experience the least painful for me? I know it's ridiculous, but any recommendations are more than appreciated.

Thank you.

Assistance Lush Rundle Mall - did you serve me?

I know this is a really long shot - but I'm old enough to know how the magic of everybody being "slightly" related in Adelaide works. I'm hoping beyond hope someone will know the lady I'm looking for or she might be on reddit. Stupidly I forgot to ask her her name.

Last Tuesday I raced into Lush Rundle mall and was served by a young lady *maybe 20s with beautiful long auburn hair and glasses. ( I was an older grey haired lady, walking aids, recently out of major surgery and looking for a product to help with my next series of surgeries and admissions to icu if that helps her remember me).

I was very apprehensive and anxious going in store due to a significant speech impairment, being the wrong side of 60 and being disabled. Certainly not Lush's usual demographic. However I needed a product urgently so could not order online.

I was served by the most gentle, patient, empathetic woman who was simply extraordinary. Her kindness and support totally overwhelmed me. She then did something that reduced me to tears because of its randomness. To her, maybe it wasn't huge, but to me it literally impacted me so deeply that a week later im still shedding tears because a random stranger cared that much for me and wanted me to have some happiness. Life has been simply overwhelmingly awful and hard for me and my husband recently. Earlier that day we had received more unexpected bad news and I walked into the store so broken and lost about my future and felt I was just white knuckling it through life.

I will never ever understand why this beautiful girl chose to be so kind to me and accept a hug from me for doing so, but I would give anything for her to truly deeply know just how deeply she has impacted my life since that moment. At least a couple dozen times every single day I think of her and are reminded that in every darkness there is a shining star that lights your path. That one little act of kindness and a random hug has done so much to heal my pain and heartbreak. Its taught me to not give up cos beautiful things are there in the darkness.

There are rare angels that walk this earth and this girl is absolutely one. I would so love her to know how deep the footprint on my heart she left is.

I may never know your name but I will never ever forget you.

Assistance Landlord did a surprise inspection and went through my stuff.

Hello everyone, so as the title says my landlord did a surprise inspection while I was at University, went through my stuff and found my cigarettes in the drawer as if he was looking for it. There is no clause in the rental tenancy agreement where I have agreed for surprise inspections and a no cigarettes policy (I do not smoke in the room tho). The question is are surprise inspections normal or is it just an issue with him? He also gave me a repossession notice for the cigarette box, is it valid since cigarettes aren’t illegal and there was nothing mentioned about it on the tenancy agreement either. How do I proceed further with this without breaking bank with legal services fee? Thank you!

Assistance Adelaide Dental

It’s 4:40 in the morning, I’ve been calling every emergency after hours dental clinic in the state and none of them pick up the phone, and they all have full voicemail boxes.

One guy picked up but wants 800 dollars to extract a broken wisdom tooth and won’t have me in for 4 hours.

For the love of god where can I get my tooth removed, and why are there so many ā€œ24/7ā€ service clinics that aren’t picking up the phone.

Ive even called the Adelaide dental foundation and even they don’t pick up the phone.

Update: the earliest I’ve been able to book is 9am for ā€œnormal weekday pricingā€ instead of 8:30 for $800. Ive tried salt water, listerine, aspirin, ibuprofen, numbing agent, paracetamol, antibiotics, trying to not touch the tooth

Update 2: I am well aware why people charge a lot for out of hours, I too have worked on call, and I’m happy to pay the extra fee when the service is needed most, that’s not the point of the post.
Im trying to highlight that most Adelaide Dental Clinics are saying they’re 24/7, when they’re not.
The service was needed 7 and a half hours ago, and after 28 calls to every ā€œafter hours and 24/7ā€ companies nobody picked up the phone, I hope everyone else here has a better experience with after hours dental than mine tonight.

Assistance Really old guy and young girl making weird sexual videos in cbd

Has anyone noticed this recently? They're usually on a bike or running... when you work in the cbd daily for years and this weird stuff is happening it stands out like a sore thumb. He was running shirtless while touching per intimate parts in the middle of the day, unsure if filming or not, had to look away, was about to vomit.

I'm concerned for her safety and mental health at this point.

*Edit 1: Appreciate all the deep dives. What my brain initially registered was what I thought was a homeless drug affected man chasing down a girl on a bike - such as that Rundle mall episode recently. He has the same look and build as most rough sleepers around the cbd.

Paid $150 dollars to organize a roast pork with crackling and roast potato from a local fish and chip shop and received these deep fried potatoes instead and the roast pork was super soft and oily, no crackling. tried to fix it but there was no rescuing any of it. Is this worth complaining about? I wanted to just say nothing and not get this ever again but family members insist that I complain and ask for money back. What do you think? What would you do?

Assistance Racist outburst

I'm an international student who just landed in Adelaide today and the city's been absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.

But when I was walking near Hindmarsh Square turning to Rundle Mall, I saw a man (Aussie) with a cute dog. Out of nowhere, this guy started to hurl racist abuses at me and yelled at me to get out of the country, very very loudly and all the people in the street turned to look.

I was super scared for my safety as I don't have an Australian SIM phone number yet and couldn't call anyone. Further, nobody really did anything about this guy who was yelling his head off for a good minute until I was out of sight.

How is one supposed to deal with such situations? I was in shock and didn't know what to do except walk away quickly.

hey yall I live in around the Pennington area for context and this all began on the 13th of April, I was working on Monday the whole day (9 to 530pm) and around 10am I had two packages delivered to my house, no one was there to bring them in so they were left outside on the doormat for a few hours. Around 3:29pm the ring camera goes off and guess what, packages were stolen.

hoping to see if anyone can help identify this scumbag, I've already contacted the sellers asking for either a refund or replacement and am now waiting for a response. this man had airpods and some neon bright shoes, he also rides his bike and has a overgrown beard.

sorry for the quality but I can't upload any videos for some reason.

Assistance Looking for real Mexican food in Adelaide

Is there anywhere in Adelaide that you would recommend I go to, for some real Mexican food? I’m not talking zambreros or Guzman y Gomez, served by teenage girls, something that Mexicans would say is good food. I find the two chains mentioned are okay, but to be honest sometimes they aren’t passable in my opinion. Zambreros meat kinda sucks, and I don’t feel as though it’s what proper Mexican food should taste like. I like the loaded chips from Guzman y Gomez, but I’d assume that’s not a traditional Mexican dish. Their burritos aren’t the best either. These are the two stores on hindley street for context. Anyway, where could I find a genuine Mexican burrito, or other dishes that are actually really good, in Adelaide cbd?

Edit: I had been to zambreros hindley/bank street before writing this, hadn’t realised until I got home that they charged me twice! I only tapped my phone once, and they won’t answer the phone. I’ve called 7 times, was hung up on 3 times and the phone rung out the other 4 times. There were no customers when I went there, at 8:05pm on a Monday, it can’t be that busy to not answer a single phone call over 30mins. Pretty annoyed now.

Assistance Young man from California visiting Adelaide to meet my pen pal. What sweet food or gift do I bring from the US to surprise her?

I’m a 21 year old guy from California and I’m heading to Adelaide soon to finally meet my pen pal. We’ve been writing back and forth for years and this’ll be the first time meeting in person. She likes painting, anime, chess, scary movies lol. She is so excited to meet me and we will be staying together have a lot of exciting activities planned for us during the month of February. She told me I don't have to bring anything but I really want to surprise her.

I’d love to bring a small gift from the US, but I don’t want to overdo it or come off strange. Something thoughtful, not expensive, and ideally something that actually feels "American" without being cheesy.

I was thinking along the lines of snacks you can’t get in Australia, something local from California, or maybe a small keepsake. But I’ve also heard Aussies don't like sweet food from US.

What would you personally think is a good, normal gift to receive from an American visiting for the first time? Or should I just shout a coffee or a beer and keep it simple?
