I don’t use reddit, nor do I post. I’m logging in specifically because of this community here. Reading posts here has been heartwrenching and incredibly relatable.
It’s a kind of long one, but if anyone has the time or energy to read and reply it would be so greatly appreciated. I just want to shout my confusion into the void and hope someone can understand and listen and give advice. I’m 22 and have never experienced a death before.
Two weeks ago my dad died. He was 54 and was a severe, abusive alcoholic for most of my life. In the past 7-8 years his brain and body has been declining and deteriorating. There is so much to say and unpack about him and his drinking habits that I simply can’t put into text.
My mum divorced him ten years ago, after separating 12 years ago. But she and I would still go over to his place, feed him, clean him when he soiled himself. One time six years ago I somehow convinced him to let us take him to the hospital, despite my resentment and bitterness towards him (I was 15 at the time). He was impossible to communicate with, as he would forget what we were talking about every ten seconds. And as it is with many alcoholics, he was extremely stubborn about not going to the hospital. It was the most gruelling ten hours of my life, getting him and keeping him there.
I was told the next day that if I hadn’t brought him in that night, he would have died the next day. And that’s when I felt like I messed up, like I was now prolonging his suffering.
Aftwr this, he would still contact me, sending random texts, calling me in the middle of the night, speaking to me for hours whilst shitfaced, acting like I’m his therapy session. And every time I’d pick up, because I’d never know if it’s the last time I’d speak to him again.
About a year ago now, I had to block him because he was starting to affect my daily life. There was a lot of guilt, of course, but also my resentment simmered down. To self soothe I guess, I would tell myself I just feel bad for this small, pathetic man.
I moved interstate with my mum and brother two years ago.
I would hear stories that he would be found passed out on a sidewalk near his house, or would escape hospital, from people who knew him. He crashed his car, then another one. Somehow he survived and no one else was hurt.
I learnt recently one time one of his most trusted friends (whom my father pushed away obviously because this person would do everything in his power to help him get sober, before becoming burnt out by it) would go to his house to check up on him, knock on the door for ten minutes and then see my father on the ground shaking, completely non-functional.
Even though he was blocked, I could still receive the voicemails he left. Typically just rambling, or asking me to call him back, out of his mind. He would tell me how much he loved me.
The last voicemail he ever sent me was the same, but he ended it with “well. In another life”. Which I realised now that those would be his last ever words to me.
Just over two weeks ago he fell and hit his head. He had a brain bleed, and because of his failing liver his brain bleed wouldn’t be able to be fixed even with surgery. we got the call a couple days after, that he was going to die that night or the next morning.
My mum brother and I flew out to where we used to live, where my dad still was, and went straight to the hospital. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get the image, the smell and the sounds out of my head. He was severely jaundiced, he had two huge black eyes, and the death rattles were so loud. He fell into a coma shortly before we got there. It was brutal and disgusting and horrifying. He died the next morning, two weeks ago today.
He never sold the house. It was where me and my brother grew up. The cement path to the doorway had my baby footprints in it. I hadn’t been in the house for a couple years. The man didn’t let go of anything. Everything was the same, except for the disgusting conditions he was living in because he couldn’t take care of himself. It was fucking devastating to see how he was living before he died. Sad and alone, confused and practically disabled.
In one of the bathrooms, there was a sticky note on the mirror that said “I am capable of changing my life for the better”. That broke me.
These last two weeks have been the most stressful weeks of my life. I missed out on my very last class of uni before I graduate. And I’ve never dealt with a death before. So it’s all very overwhelming.
What is grief? I still can’t figure it out. It’s natural for humans to grieve because human connection with important people and loved ones is necessary for survival. But why would I grieve him? Am I grieving him?
Whats happening? I haven’t slept in two days and I haven’t cried since the day he died, but feel like I’m always on the verge of crying even if I don’t know why. I need answers to questions I don’t even know. I was told “ambiguous grief” is when you grieve somebody before they even die. Yes, because he was a shell of himself for years. I do not remember the last time I held a genuine conversation with him. I accepted he was long gone by the time he forgot the date of my birthday.
