FINALLY! The Place To Sell Your Art And An ArtCrit Casual Sub By Yours Truly

You asked for it.

We heard you.

We delivered!

In our last news update we touched lightly on how much your words of encouragement mean to us. The sub has grown tremendously in the past year and we couldn’t be happier to see you all giving constructive feedback to one another.

We’ve also heard the people who have enjoyed our moderation style, but wanted something more lighthearted and discussion-focused. We’re also well aware that there’s a lack of subreddits where people are allowed to self-promote and advertise.

That being said, I’m happy to introduce our two new subs!

r/ArtistNook is a casual, cozy, discussion-focused sub moderated by leighabbr and myself. While r/ArtCrit has strict rules on posts, r/ArtistNook is much more laid back.

You can share information, talk about your artwork or OCs, post your work with links to your social media, and even ask for pricing help if you share the required information so people can actually help you with your prices.

This sub has been up for about two weeks, so there’s some light activity already.

We can’t wait to see you there!

r/ArtStore is an active, large sub focused on connecting artists and buyers. You can self-promote, sell your prints, advertise your commissions, shops, and handmade goods. We do not allow drop shippers or mass-produced goods of any kind.
With the holiday season approaching, this may be just the sub you need to get eyes on your work!

Leighabbr and I are so honored to be leading these communities. We’re still fine tuning them both and, like when we took charge in r/ArtCrit, we’re open to ideas and feedback.

Thank you all for your continued support! We honestly couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

STUDY SERIES Study Series: Part 2 - Composition

Post image
3 Upvotes

Welcome back to the Study Series!

Moving away from values and contrast, we’re moving into the next important part of your work – composition!

Composition is the way an artist arranges the pieces of their image to help guide the viewer’s eyes where they want it to go. A strong composition can be used to create a specific mood, tell a story, create balance, and direct attention to important areas of the piece.

For those commenting, think about where your eye goes first when you look at the image. Does it feel balanced or does the image seem to “lean” to one side? Are there any distracting areas or does anything feel crowded or awkward?

Let’s work together to create stronger pieces with composition!

REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTING

Please note that all general sub rules apply (no AI, no fishing for compliments, no giving personal info, etc). Only our post requirements are different here.

- Pieces must;

a) Be no more than 6 months old and/or

b) Must still be being worked on and/or

c) Must have the intention of being recreated.

- Works must follow our NSFW rules.

- Since no context is required in these posts, draw and paint-overs are automatically expected. If you don’t want these, say so.

GIVING CRITIQUE

Only critique the piece regarding the topic of the week. If the artist would like additional critique, they can make a post in the main sub. Critiques are still expected to be constructive and polite.

What do you think about this dragon?

  1. This is kind of a self treat as i bonded to this black[a game for a book series]. I wanted it to be wholesome and pretty? Lmao

  2. I need some help with the neck. I don't know if it looks too "empty". The shadows i added are rough just to ask should i go with shadows or without them?

If with them can anyone help with the forms of said shadows? I just keep getting it weird.

  1. reference for the dragon was the third image provided. What i went for is a chill me reading some school books on a high mountain with my dragon beside me.

  2. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP WITH THE CLOUDS.

I love the colour but the shape and form are just not enticing. I tried a cloud brush but that went horrendously i think. And it just didn't match the rest of the drawing being smooth and sharp. ANY EXPERIANCE WTH CLOUDS?

Made on ibispaint with my index finger and thumb.

Any critique is welcome. Thanks.

I'm trying to make art like guweiz, keeping the character in low light and adding some rim light.

I am open to any feedback that will help me make better work

I used references from pinterest for the back muscles and neon lights.

Looking for feedback on my latest piece

I think I’m finished with this art piece but I’m also feeling like the coloring isn’t as strong as it could be? Like maybe I need some darker shadows?

I’ve been really trying to push myself into drawing scenes and telling stories.
So for this one, we have two characters who just rescued a third character from the dungeon and now they’re trying to sneak out.

Ive attached the references I used but it was mostly just from my brain. I’ve also included my early sketches.

I want to get better but I feel like my art has just stagnated at this level. And it takes a very long time to do these like 14 hours each.

TLDR looking for advice on lighting, story composition, and perspective.

Can I get some feedback?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone!
This is a portrait I made recently and I would love to get it critiqued and receive some pointers as to what I should focus on in order to improve.
For context: I painted this from scratch and without reference. It’s in greyscale so I can focus on my values and there is no hair so that I can focus only on the head construction and the facial features.
This is part of a “challenge” where you paint the same portrait 14 times and get it critiqued each time so that you can apply the feedback you receive on your next attempt. This is my 9th attempt.

Thank you for any help you’re willing to give me! :)

Are the composition and values of these pieces clear?

I’ve been trying to improve the composition and values of my artwork for the past year or so. These are some of my most recent pieces. I only used a photo reference for posing and mixing different styles of clothes together (mainly for the second one).
The first one is supposed to use an overhead three point perspective with the blue, green, and yellow dragons being the focus.
The second one uses the golden ratio. The two characters on the right are the main focus while the one on the left isn’t as important.
The last one uses a Dutch angle and has the killer as the main focus.

Looking for Critique on My Memento Inspired Digital Tattoo Design

Post image
2 Upvotes

I created this digital tattoo concept inspired by the film Memento, exploring themes of memory and time through spiral typography, a clock, and geometric elements.

Medium: Digital illustration, created in Clip Studio Paint.

Reference: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1064256955706536274/

I'd appreciate specific feedback on the composition, typography, and readability. Does the design feel balanced, or do some elements compete for attention? Are the smaller text and overlapping shapes clear enough and which details might be difficult to read as a tattoo?

I'd like to understand what could be improved and why.

I’m drawing Qingxiao from Wuthering Wvaes. Could anyone draw over this and kinda correct the anatomy? No particular reference was used. It feels okay, but not very fitting from the character I draw, especially the lower body. The character ref in the 2nd image. Thanks!

Need help with the antlers

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm pretty sure the antlers are in the wrong perspective, but I'm not sure how to fix it without a visual reference (and it's difficult to find one). So if anyone can redline and help that would be really appreciated since i've been stuck on this for 2 months. The base of her antlers are pipes btw.

And other critique is welcome too. I think the axe looks off but i mainly want just the antlers fixed

I also can’t decide if I want to try to lift the blue back to lavender (second photo). I’m working with only primary colors so getting the correct saturation down is a challenge. My style is stylized and graphicy so I’m trying to figure out how to translate that into paint. Any critiques would be appreciated!

(I referenced multiple pics of owls but not one specific reference)

Feedback on the anatomy and muscles before I start coloring?

Hello, Im drawing a muscular anthro version of yveltal from pokemon. Is there anything I can improve? I want to focus on the anatomy and muscles. Barring the hands for now.

I didnt use any reference and just winged the whole thing. I looked at a couple shirtless men in google for help but thats it.

This is digital and Im not really going for any style. Aslong as I capture a good enough accurate body.

Freehand Perspective Troubleshooting

Thumbnail

No references, I'm working through exercises from Glenn Vilppus figure drawing book. Would love to hear any bad tendencies/errors I'm prone to. I know freehand is always a bit imperfect, but I want to continue to build my sense of perspective intuition. If you notice anything, I'd love to hear any exercises that help with that type of error, thank you.

P.S.: I'm not allergic to using rulers for learning a specific form rotation/modifications, but I'd like to stick to freehand ad much as possible. Thank you!

Im not even sure if I'm doing the practice correctly or if it will help with learning to draw backrounds and coloring, but my goal is to make the backrounds look believable without much effort and time, it didnt turn out how I want it to, and I dont like how my colors look, I'd love criticism

Reference is included

UPDATED WORK Updated, got more flesh tones in.

Post image
2 Upvotes

No reference, oil on canvas.

After my last post (big ass) landscape thing. I reworked the figure as well as the background. I am going for a jarring humanoid, structural figure that looks somewhat tortured that is positioned in a surreal sterile landscape.

This is after some new color blocking and reworking the figure and landscape. I added more shadows on the figure as well.

I am looking for critique on the figure, proportions and overall visual hierarchy as well as composition.

Thanks!

Happy with where I am but wish to improve my anatomy and lighting (ref used)

Hello!! I hope i made this post correctly,

I'm still a fairly new/beginner artist, I've been drawing for around 4 months now and I'm happy with my progress but i would love some pointers on where to go from here and how to improve. I feel as though i am plateuing a little, which is okay!! but i also find myself relying on blocking basic shapes/guidelines from existing photographs instead of fully freehanding it which is not what i want to continue doing.

I have tried practicing gesture and it doesnt seem to be clicking for me, have some of you also experienced it taking a while before gesture becomes a little bit less challenging? I of course don't want to give up but it can feel a little demotivating when i am fairly confident drawing anatomy freehand from basic shapes/guidelines but not freehanding the basic shapes/guidelines themselves if that makes any sense?

I also worry that my lighting can appear a little flat and doesnt portray the lighting i want it to
