Subreddit Update How to Change Your Flair - Please Read Before Messaging the Mods

Hi everyone!

As some of you have noticed, r/AskAChinese now automatically reminds users with the default "earth🌐" flair (which is automatically assigned to new users by automod) to update their user flair to reflect their country, region, or demographic.

Please note: comments using the default "earth🌐" flair may be removed. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to increase flair adoption so that people can understand each others' perspectives better.

So here's a clear guide on how to set your user flair on the most common platforms & devices:

Reddit App (IOS or Android):

  1. Open the subreddit in the Reddit app.
  2. Tap the three dots (•••) in the top-right corner.
  3. Select “Change user flair.”
  4. Pick a flair or write your own.
  5. Tap “Apply.”

New Reddit (Desktop - reddit.com):

  1. Open the subreddit
  2. Look at the right sidebar, scroll down until you see your username with the words "User Flair" above it
  3. Click on the "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it
  4. Pick a flair or write your own.
  5. Click "Apply"

Old Reddit (Desktop - old.reddit.com):

  1. Visit the subreddit using old.reddit.com.
  2. On the right sidebar, find “Show my flair on this subreddit.”
  3. Click “edit” next to it.
  4. Choose or type your flair.
  5. Click “Save.”

Mobile Browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.):

  1. Open the subreddit
  2. Look for the "Feed | About" tab selection, click on "About"
  3. Scroll down until you see your username, with the words "User Flair" above it
  4. Click "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it
  5. Pick a flair or write your own, & click apply

If you have tried all of the above but still need help, feel free to leave a comment (including mentioning the flair that you want!) below and we'll set it for you manually. (But please do try the steps above first!)

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ Do you like the new no order no seat rule at Chinese Starbucks?

Post image
57 Upvotes

In the US I always felt like you need to buy something at a cafe or restaurant. Mostly because it’s rude and the seats are for customers. The customers come first because the company is making money off them and they are basically paying to be there. In china i was shocked when I went to a burger king to eat and saw people eating kfc there and didn’t even order from Burger King. I was a Burger King customer and couldn’t find a seat because of those bad people. I’ve also been to a few busy Starbucks in the past and I saw so many dudes in there gaming and they also never ordered a drink. I felt like they disturbed my experience as a paying customer too. So, I am happy that one company is finally doing something about this. I shocked some online in China disagree with jt!

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 Are most Chinese foreign students in the USA wealthy?

My brother is dating a girl from mainland China. She majored in journalism. We recently went on a double date with my girlfriend, and during the conversation, we asked about her background. She mentioned that her parents worked for the government and that her father was a bank manager. She also seems to spend quite lavishly on clothing, purses, and her lifestyle, so I was surprised that her parents’ income as government employees could cover the cost of sending her to college in the United States.

Language | 语言 ㊥ Why Do Chinese Descriptions of Weather and Physical Appearance Seem So Extreme?

I noticed something interesting when I lived in China, and I’m curious to hear what others think.
For example, when the weather was a little warm, people would often say 今天很热 (jīntiān hěn rè), which means “It’s very hot today.” However, I noticed that they would sometimes use this expression even when the weather didn’t seem particularly hot to me, but rather just warm. Is this a difference in how Chinese people perceive or describe temperature?
I also noticed something similar when describing people’s physical appearance. Someone with slightly tanned skin might automatically be described as 黑 (hēi, meaning “black” or “dark”), while someone with lighter skin might be described as 白 (bái, meaning “white” or “fair”). I noticed a similar pattern when describing body types, where people seemed to be categorized as either 瘦 (shòu, “thin”) or 胖 (pàng, “fat”), even when their appearance seemed somewhere in between.
In general, I got the impression that these descriptions sometimes leaned toward one extreme or the other, with fewer distinctions for people who fell somewhere in the middle. Is this a cultural or linguistic difference, or has the way people use these descriptions changed over the years? I’d be interested to hear insights from Chinese people or anyone familiar with Chinese culture and language.

Technology | 科技📱 北京留学生求推荐5000元左右的笔记本电脑!双十一买新机还是二手更划算?

• Upvotes

Sports | 体育🏀 MMA clubs in shenzhen?

Ive never been to china, so I am really struggling to navigate and find any mma clubs in shenzhen. I'll be coming for 2 months in December and I am looking for a place to train 4x a week or so. I know no chinese but I think i can just follow visual instructions and figure things out this way. Hopefully.

So far, the only place I found is invincible mma in Chegongmiao. But I cant find their schedule. I'd like to book my hotel within a walking distance from the club and this limits my options by a lot. Does anyone train there? Are there any gyms that offer both striking and grappling classes and are foreigner friendly?

Thanks in advance.

Language |

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 What does China really think of Singapore?

Am Singaporean Chinese. I visit China often. Love it. Try to go different regions each time. Should be going again soon this coming Christmas holidays.

What do Chinese people think of Singapore and Singaporeans? Asking both those who have been to Singapore before and those who have not. Are views of Singapore generally positive or there are some questions?

Buying Advice is it safe to buy second hand phone/tablet from china ?

I’m looking to buy used smartphone/tablet directly from China but wanted to get a pulse check from the community on how to do this safely. I’m a bit worried about getting scammed, ending up with terrible quality product
I actually have a trusted friend currently living in China(he went there a month ago) who is willing to help me out.
I want to know the safest & most reliable platforms to browse and buy from.
I need to know what major red flags or scams I should look out for, even with a contact on the ground.
Which platforms do you recommend?

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 Do men from China abide by the saying “if he wanted to, he would” in dating?

I want to date a guy from China. I find them really attractive. I’ve chatted with a few through online dating apps. They don’t seem to be as aggressive as their Caucasian counterparts, or even Asian Americans, when it comes to pursuing further to ask me out and continue conversation. When this happens, I immediately think “he must not be that into me”. Am I right or am I missing something about the dating culture? I usually assume men take the lead when it comes to pursuing as long as I’ve shown my interest (by swiping right)

Social life | 社交👥 it normal for a married Chinese woman to hang out with male friends alone?

I watched a video of a 36 yr old Chinese male vlogger make a video of hanging out with a childhood friend. He is single and she is married. They went out alone and shared street food together and even fed each other. TheY listened to music together sharing earphones and laughed and giggle together.

They were out the whole day together and it seemed like a date. They walked together at the mall and looked like a couple with big smiles on their faces.

I also had some married Chinese female friends in the past when I was single. One was even my professor!.
One even invited me to her apartment and cooked me food. We were alone and she thought it was ok. Many wanted to hang out alone too and go eat together and even go to the beach. I always asked if their husbands knew about our friendship and they never answered. Is this normal in china?

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ Are people often being put into mental hospitals for going against the CCP?

I am very aware that there is a ton of propaganda against China and the CCP, a lot of exaggerations and straight up lies about what happens to you if you criticize Xi Jinping or the CCP. In fact in my life, generally I advocate for people to fact check their information to make sure it's not anti-China propaganda, and I am a big appreciator of China in general.

That said, recently I was talking about this with a coworker, and she mentioned Li Yixue, a Chinese influencer that got put into a Psychiatric Hospital for reporting a police officer for molesting her. I looked this up expecting it to be made up, but it apparently is just straight up true, and from my research it appears she is still missing to this day...

The articles I found about this talk about how China does this to people who criticize leadership or the police. Is this really something that happens a lot? Are people in China afraid of this happening to them if they criticize the government? Or is what happened with Li Yixue a case of Police abusing their power, which sadly happens everywhere, and news outlets using this case as propaganda by presenting it as a common occurrence?

Food | 食品🥟 How do you deal with over critical food/restaurant reviewers? Do memes about them exist?

Everytime i read the reviews of a Chinese eatery they are almost always overwhelmingly positive, with someone praising the cooking, someone else the noodle quality etc

However, almost everytime there is a Chinese guy giving a one star review and launching in a dissertation about what they ate not being "real Chinese food"

What cracks me up the most is that these guys use exaggeratedly formal language, obscure references and blow up very minor inconveniences into life or death issues.

Sentences like:

"The broth was tasty but didn't have any firmness or depth of character"

"These noodles cannot be considered in Lanzhou style but, at most, in the style of (other province or city of China)"

And the best part is reading the owner's responses where they match their tone accusing them of defamation, of not knowing real Chinese cooking etc

It's like these guys correspond to the Western stereotype of the "neckbeard" (annoying, opinionated, egocentric, extremely ignorant but with a "know it all" attitude) but related to food and eating.

Do they have a name in Chinese? How do you deal with them? Are they a sort of meme or is there some recurring joke about them?

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 Owning a plane in China

Hi,

In North America, regular people can get a pilot's license and buy small planes to fly them around.

Is this possible too in China? What is the cost like? In North America, you have to be wealthy to own a plane, even a small cessna.

Entertainment | 娱乐🎮 Chinese Youtubers?

Hi all,

I am learning Mandarin at the moment and wanted to watch some Chinese speaking youtubers that have English subtitles. I have found a few channels before but they didn't have any English captions so it was difficult to follow. I enjoy commentary channels, internet gossip, and gaming channels. Would anyone have suggestions for me?
