Announcement Wiki editors and maintainers wanted!

Hey folks, r/askseattle and our team over at /r/Seattle are looking for folks to help us build, update, and maintain our wiki and sidebar content. The /r/Seattle wiki was once a boon of information for new visitors and locals alike, but the subreddit has grown and sites/businesses have come and gone. Our mods are busy moderating and the wiki is collecting cobwebs.

I'm reaching out to members of this community specifically as you are most likely to benefit from (or be knowledgeable about) this content space. This community is entirely based around helping visitors and residents alike find answers to questions that frequently get buried / reported / removed for being duplicates in r/seattle due to the size and velocity of other posts.

If you're interested in helping us out, here are some details:

  • The main areas of work are obviously the wikis on this subreddit and r/seattle
  • You'll be working with the mods here and r/seattle to help decide the organization and categorization of wiki pages, and how we add content / posts / etc to them
  • You will not be asked to moderate, so no need for moderation or wiki experience
  • The only requirements are a post history shows activity in either this subreddit or in r/seattle that we can trust with edit access to our wiki

If you're interested, shoot a message to the mods here or the seattle sub - these links have the title all filled out for you - or just send me a message or comment here.

Cheers!

Recommendation Breaking Lease Due To Toxic Roommate, Need Advice

Hey there, kind of just putting this to the void because I'm very stressed and need advice. Apologies for rambling.

I moved to Seattle from out of state along with my girlfriend a few months ago, and we ended up leasing an apartment with an at-the-time friend of ours who we'd known and trusted for a while. Things were great until two month ago when our roommate suddenly quit their job, leaving my gf and I barely scraping by on making sure everything is paid and having some food in our mouths, with both of us having to tap into what little savings we had left over from the move.

My gf and I are looking to break the lease on our current apartment and move somewhere else, but finding a new place is not what we need advice on. The main thing we need advice on is what we may be liable for as our roommate has shown no signs of looking for a job or willingness to pay us back the part of the rent that they owe us, but we can't stay in this apartment much longer without all three of us being at risk of an eviction and several months worth of unpaid rent in debt.

The one thing I know we'd be liable for is a 1.5x month of rent lease termination fee, but I'm worried there could be more.

Roommate has been belligerent (not to the point of assault but I want to be away from them before something like that happens) on a couple occasions in the past month, most recently slamming a door loud enough to make our ears ring after we asked them to be quieter in the later parts of the night as I have to wake up early for work and my gf has pretty bad sleep issues. Roommate half-ass apologized days later by saying that they were on acid and handled the situation poorly.

Again, apologies for rambling, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Seattle to the coast

First time visitor in 2 weeks from Jersey to see the Seahawks play. Will be there for a few days. Is it worth it to rent a car and drive to see the coast? If so, where do we go and what do you recommend to see?

Just cause eviction violation?

A little less than a year ago my 12 unit building was evicted under the just cause eviction ordinance. The reason stated was to install a sprinkler system.

The building was painted. No sprinklers were installed. It’s now back on the rental market with increased rent on the units of 1200-2000 each.

The permit that was used to evict us was never executed.

Do the former tenants have any recourse? Would I contact a landlord tenant lawyer or small claims?

Looking for ordained person for micro wedding on November 6

My fiancé and I are planning on getting married in Seattle on November 6th. We are going to have a larger wedding this coming summer but for various reasons (including but not limited to insurance) we want to get married now.

We are not from Washington/Seattle but want to get married in King County because we travel there a lot.

We considered a courthouse wedding and filled out the online form. We haven’t heard back from them, seems like we may not.

So, we are going to be in Seattle on November 6, marriage license in hand. We need an official officiant to sign our paperwork. Maybe say a few things about something if you want to.

We are not religious, though maybe a little spiritual. Also we need witnesses and maybe we can just find people standing around who knows.

Also you can recommend a location too if you want.

Much love thanks.

Recommendation No health insurance, need mental health meds

I was recently at Fairfax in Everett and got a new medication regime under them but it runs out next week and I need to find a place that is cheap out of pocket and can prescribe mental health medications. I did call them to ask for an emergency one-time refill and they said no.

I’m in LQA without a car so I’d prefer something nearby. CVS and Zoom urgent cares do not prescribe mental health meds.

I am not eligible for Apple health or really any kind of welfare program because my ex husband pays my mortgage and that alone makes me ineligible for ANYTHING. I’ve tried. I just need a place with a cheap out of pocket non-insured visit that can prescribe mental health medication. Thank you

Question about Tip Top's "Timed Entry"...

• Upvotes

Hi All!

I'm curious about how it works going up to the Tip Top Café for their "pie and pint" reservations.. Does the timed entry mean you have that 15 minute window to enter or does it actually mean you ONLY get a total of 15 minutes there to pound your pie and pint?

I've been to Seattle many times but always for work and this is the first time I can get out to do some touristy things for a bit...

Any help with this or other relevant advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question Are there any free or sliding scale therapy groups beyond the ones affiliated with Medicaid?

Curious if anyone else has any advice on finding free or near-$0 therapy in Seattle. I currently have case management through a mental health group affiliated with Medicaid but I haven't had good luck with therapy through them, it just seems like we never have enough time in our weekly 40 minute appointment to get beyond them asking how my week was to really dig into deeper issues I need addressed.

I'm on food stamps and disability assistance so I can't really spare anything for paid therapy.

Question Where can I spray-paint something? (Belltown)

I need to spray paint a few things for a halloween costume. It feels like a dumb question but I genuinely don't have any ideas. My apartment isn't big enough to do it without making a huge mess, the building explicitly disallows it in the garage or alley, and I figure someone might not like it if I did it in a parking lot or something.

Discussion Witnessing a Homeless Person Pass Away

I recently moved here from the suburbs in the Midwest, so I was not used to seeing as many homeless people. I kind of just ignored them and kept moving, but today I saw a man unresponsive on the street.

The ambulance did CPR on him for about 20 minutes before I left, because my chest was pounding and I was scared. I don’t know if he passed, but I am afraid that was the case.

I’m not really sure what the goal of this post was, I didn’t shed and tears and that scares me even more. I think I feel bad for him, my head hurts and my chest hurts and I just wanted someone to talk to. Even just making this post feels like I’m commodifying his death.

I tried to distract myself when I got home, but playin games or watching a show now just feels disgusting after I might’ve witnessed someone pass away in front of me. Focusing on my reaction this hard too and not the even also makes me feel like a disgusting narcissist.

Has anyone else gone through something like this? Is there any advice you have?

Seattle bars for Sunday Football

Hey everyone! I'm heading to Seattle in a couple of weeks. I'm very particular with my NFL viewing experiences! I like every single game to be on all TV's! I normally go to Sluggers but I'm looking for a better option (better beers / tv's). Any suggestions in Seattle?! Thanks!

Best dinner spots near climate Pledge Arena?

Heading up there tonight with the wife, the place we're staying is close to the arena so I was hoping for some good walkable spots near there.. Would like to keep it under $100, pretty open to most types of food.

Mediterranean and Levantine are probably my favorite. My wife loves more Japanese with good ramen or sushi, but we're open to just about anything.

Favorite local roaster for classic breakfast coffee?

One of the things I will miss about Alaska is that my local coffee shop was also a small batch roaster who made a great workhorse breakfast coffee (medium roast, smooth, fruity). What are my best local options for something like that here in Seattle?

EDIT

I'm a returning Seattlite so I'm pretty familiar with the established names, but I'm definitely interested in any newer roasters that have popped up in the last 5-10 years.

Recommendation Spooky locations near Seattle for just the wedding ceremony/photos?

I'm looking for a place in or around Seattle that has spooky/haunted vibes. It can be indoor or outdoor.

We wouldn't have the reception there (were not having one), it would just be the ceremony and family photos.

Any tips are appreciated!

Visiting roadtrip with 3 tween boys

Hey all,

I'm considering a road trip up i5 with my 3 tween and was looking for suggestions for a weekend getaway. Obviously, the space needle and doughnuts at Pikes Place but I figured I'd ask the locals what cool things I should visit and where you'd recommend staying. focus on hands on or active places.

Places I'm thinking of:

  • Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP
  • Pikes Place
  • Space Needle
  • Public Library
  • Pinball Museum

I'd love recommendations for

  • Inexpensive place to stay for two nights
  • "cool" places I wouldn't know about otherwise (Microsoft tour?)
  • Amazing parks to get out and run around
  • Places your kids think are awesome that adults might overlook
  • Special events I should avoid or be sure to make over the weekend of 11/13-11/16?

Thanks in advance!

Thinking of Moving to Seattle and Want Opinions

Hello,

Some background on me is that I was born and raised in north Florida. I moved to Denver for 2.5 years for work and recently over a year ago transferred to Honolulu. I’ve realized that Honolulu is not a place I see myself living long term even though I love all the hobbies I have here. My girlfriend used to go to school in Bellingham and I would visit her often from Denver. She later transferred to UH Manoa and I followed with.

My girlfriend is coming up on graduating and wants to move back to the mainland. We have given Washington (mainly seattle) a thought. I know of all the problems like cost of living, crime, homelessness, etc. The one that we are most concerned about is the weather. We love the outdoors and our hobbies consist of hiking, surfing, climbing for her, fishing and boating for me. I also love snowboarding. She has noted, that while she was in school here, the winters made her really depressed. I was wondering what everyone here thinks about the winters and cloudy days? How do you combat them? What are hobbies you do in the winter? Is seasonal depression or the weather enough to reconsider moving?

Recommendations for neighborhoods in Seattle

Early 30’s single mom considering a move from the Central Coast of California to Seattle with my 5-year-old son. Partially due to CoL (the specific area I live in is in the top 10 most expensive places to live in the US, so I don’t need any lectures on how expensive Seattle is/can be), but also because I’d like for my son to grow up somewhere that isn’t exclusively wealthy+White politically moderate people. It’s also a struggle to build a community or make friends where we live because people are always leaving for the same reasons I’d like to.

I work remotely, so I’d have no commute and am more concerned about which areas are better for younger kids, but also single millennials. My housing budget is $3200 or less for a 2-3 bdr., and I’d love to be in an area that’s walkable to restaurants, parks, things to do on the weekends, as I love to get out and explore. We’re also big into hiking and camping, but I’d rather be in the city and drive to those things than prioritize proximity to trails. Hopefully thats enough info to be helpful- thank you all in advance!

Recommendation Chimney Cleaners Recommendations?

Hi all! My partner and I just bought our first home and it’s in Shoreline. Woohoo!

As we’re preparing to move into the space, we want to find a local chimney cleaner to clean our three fireplaces. Two of the fireplaces (one wood burning stove and one more traditional fireplace) and another standalone wood fire stove.

Any recommendations?

Question What’s it like to work for Sound Transit?

I have an interview coming up with Sound Transit. I am currently employed and actually generally happy with my job, but a Sound Transit recruiter reached out and hey, it’s actually a position I am interested in. So, I’m taking to opportunity to learn more and have the interview. Can anyone share any insights on what it’s like to work there in any department? The position I’d be on sounds like a smaller team and it would be located in the main office building at Union Station with three in-person days required a week.

Question I’m not making this up, am I? Coffee shop that had bugs

A few weeks to a month ago, I swear that I saw a coffee shop being accused of having bugs of some kind. It was a popular post and there were a lot of comments.

Does anyone else remember this?

I looked on Google with the keywords and nothing came up aside from a health inspection report in September. It was given an unsatisfactory rating with a few violations but nothing about bugs was mentioned.

Does anyone remember seeing a Reddit thread with bugs being mentioned? Please tell me I’m not the only one
