FAQ Weekly Real Estate / Housing and Moving to Austin Post

• Upvotes

This is a weekly Tuesday post for question/answers regarding properties in Austin or surrounding areas along with moving to Austin questions. The following are examples of items that should be asked in here (but not limited to just these):

Housing / Real Estate Questions

  • Ask where to live
  • What neighborhood is right for you
  • Advice on apartments / asking about specific apartment reviews
  • General thoughts/views on the housing market
  • Questions about real estate prices/going up/general home buying advice
  • Advice on realtors
  • General property questions rants/complaints about pricing
  • "Is this neighborhood safe" questions / crime related questions
  • Tax / Mortgage related questions
  • Questions on developments / bidding processes
  • Have a place to rent / looking for a roommate
  • Commute times from specific locations
  • General housing repair questions / upgrade questions / solar / etc
  • Questions regarding contractors for housing repairs, upgrades
  • Memes regarding housing
  • How specific schools are in an area / general school questions
  • Questions regarding utilities
  • Questions regarding apartment services

Moving to Austin Questions

  • Is it safe?
  • Are there jobs for me?
  • Is it a good idea to move?
  • Is X salary good enough?
  • How is Austin for my background?
  • Generic should I move there?
  • Do I need a car?
  • Is X or Y transport sufficient?

Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.

Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.

Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.

If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.trla.org/atc/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.

We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.

As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

Ask Austin Anyone know of Austin volunteer gigs that actually require technical/problem-solving or more in-depth involvement? (Not just scooping soup or moving boxes)

I get two weeks off at a time and want to get involved locally, but every directory (Do512, volunteeratx, etc.) has a low barrier of entry and I find it hard to connect with people my age. Paddleboarding and picking up trash on the lake was a good one but people show up with their friends and just go in their own direction. I am currently looking at Austin Habitat for Humanity because it seems like they will do home building and repair.

Because of my time off, I can do concentrated 30–40 hour projects instead of 2 hours every Tuesday. I guess I'm being a choosy beggar but I want to get more involved in the community and find something that I can be excited about.

Where do folks with technical, engineering, or trades skills actually plug in around Austin without getting stuck in zero barrier of entry busywork? Any scrappy org recommendations? Bonus points if I can upskill while volunteering.

Seeking Internal Medicine Recommendations

Hello, my primary provider with ARC recently retired so on the hunt. I'm north near the Domain so I'd prefer someone relatively close but am open to commute further if they're worth it. I prefer an Internal Medicine provider but they do not need to be with ARC. Not picky on gender or other demographics. Please and thank you!

Looking for this truck company

Good morning everyone. I was driving yesterday down south on 620 over the Mansfield dam bridge. A company truck with some kind of large dump box on the back going north had what seems like a drywall slab fly off into my lane damaging my car. Unfortunately my dashcams didn't get the license plate (they had no front plate, and doesnt look like i can see a rear plate either) I've tried looking up a ton of companies with no luck. Here's the photos of them if anyone has any idea what company it might be.

Found a dog, can't take her in

Friend pulled up home and a really friendly dog hopped into the car. She's very sweet, she clearly had a home before this, and she keeps perking up when she hears car doors open and close. She responds to the command "Sit", though she's a little too excitable to stay seated for long. She was very friendly and gentle to our old man of a dog (though he did not like her much at all), and it's clear she really wants to get back home.

Problem is, we can't take her into our apartment, nowhere is open, and we don't have anywhere else we can hold her for longer than a day at best.

Anybody recognize her, or willing to take her in? Any advice on what to do with the poor thing? We're trying to give her water and food, but she's been too excited or distracted to take to it too much. She did drink some water, though!!

More voting stats partway through early voting

I have some more polling place and early voting stats to share now that we’ve been through 8 days of early voting.

- Precinct 248 has 2 registered voters, and one of them has voted, so they are in the lead for turnout, at 50%. There are 14 other precincts with hundreds and thousands of registered voters with between 40% and 45% turnout already after day 8. For anyone wondering about the single registered voter in 159, they haven’t voted yet. I’ll keep an eye out.

- The most popular hour of early voting is not the same each day. 11am, 12pm, 1pm, and 2pm have all had that honor at least once so far this year.

- Bee Cave City Hall and Ben Hur Shrine both have topped over 11K total early voters so far. At Bee Cave City Hall, Friday was the busiest day. At Ben Hur Shrine, Tues 10/20 was the busiest day.

- Travis County Civil and Family Courts Facility remains the least busy at this time, with Sunday being their slowest day with 59 voters.

- Sunday was overall the slowest day for early voting, with a total of 18,621 voters checked in.

Getting into bars with passport

Do all bars in Austin accept American passports? Particularly east and west sixth street? I'm visiting this weekend with my buddies and may not have my drivers license and am concerned I won't get into certain bars and be holding us back

Anyone have experience getting rejected at bars because of using their passport?

Hi! To keep this short, my boyfriend and I have begun our ring shopping journey and don't really know where to start. This is a set I have fallen in love with, but their store is in California and I would personally like to shop and try on in person.

I would love an engraved band like the one shown. The wedding band is also beautiful, truly I love this set together so much! If anyone has any recommendations for stores where I can find rings of this style please let me know. There are soo many stores it feels overwhelming!

PSA PSA: 71 Highway Entrance in Oak Hill

Highly specific niche PSA for the people who live off Monterey Oaks Blvd in Oak Hill.

Please for the love of everything holy, stop using the first highway entrance in front of the Exxon gas station if you are trying to go straight on 71. That entrance is SPECIFICALLY for the people using the ramp to get onto northbound MoPac. There is another entrance literally less then half a mile down the service road that feeds onto 71. STOP GETTING ON AND FLYING ACROSS BOTH LANES FOR THE MOPAC RAMP.

I've lost count on how many near misses I've seen because people try to cut across those 2 lanes. Especially in the morning. There are MULTIPLE signs telling you the 71 entrance is further down. Just open your eyes and actually read.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Neighbors in the Montopolis/Roy G area, please keep an eye out for Oslo!

My very sweet boy Oslo got out late Saturday night/early Sunday morning on Lily Terrace. We have not seen him since. Already registered him as lost with his microchip and have canvassed the neighborhood with flyers/put up missing pet posts in Facebook groups, Nextdoor, etc. posting here just in case I can catch some more eyes.

Oslo is three years old, incredibly friendly and cuddly, quite vocal, and about 13 pounds. All black long hair with like five little white furs on his chest, and his belly is an off brownish tint. He looks a bit Maine Coon-ish but is not. He is not an outdoor cat but we allow him supervised outdoor time so he is fairly comfortable outside.

My partner and I and our two other cats miss him dearly and would do anything to get him home. Please reach out if you have any info.

Ask Austin Missing Sketchbook Austin 2015

Post image
10 Upvotes

My friend, a local Austin artist and teacher lost the sketchbook in this photo around 2015 in Austin. It contained a lot of of his sketches and things he can’t replace artistically. I was wondering if maybe for Christmas this year we could try to help him locate if this sketchbook still exists somewhere in Austin or elsewhere..

Puppy training recommendations needed

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all I’m getting a new puppy this week. I’m so excited. I was wondering if anybody had recommendations for a board and train program in the central Texas area could be as far away is Waco or San Antonio for puppies to learn house training, crate training, and some basic commands. This would be for specifically a place that would have the puppy stay with them overnight for a few weeks to a month. Thanks so much.
