3 breeds i said i would never own (not because i dont love them but because i like to sleep in)
- acd
- german shepherd
- border collie

take all that, add 100+ lbs and you have beef and ham. biggest lifestyle change ever but worth it 🥲

also super interesting to see genetics play out! beef has less cattle dog but looks (if you add on an extra 50-60lbs) and acts so much like one vs ham with so much more cattle dog but the pyrenees seems to cancel a lot of it out

Help Tips for my 3 m/o ACD mix we rescued from the shelter?

Post image
66 Upvotes

He there! My husband and I just rescued an ACD mix from the shelter. He is so sweet, very hyper, very loving.

We have a 8 y/o chihuahua and a 2 y/o tuxedo cat. We are crate training our little ACD mix. He hasn’t had any accidents since he’s gotten used to his space that’s just for him. I’ve been picking him up, standardizing his feed times with our other ones, found a good place for him to always pee, am taking him on shorter but consistent walks, and we’ve been teaching him “sit” and “bed” (basically sit in the bed).

He’s super sweet but my biggest fear is that he keeps jumping or that he’s one of those ACDs that runs the household. Our chihuahua runs the house, but yeah we just want to give him a super good life and have a nice peaceful, happy home!

Do you have any tips or tricks or anything you might recommend? Also, any other commands he should learn?

I never knew how much I needed a cattle dog in my life until I actually got one, and now I don’t know how I’d live without one. She keeps our old dog young, keeps the squirrels in check, and has no qualms about making her opinions known. It’s been four years of chaos, menace, and pure, velcro love, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. 💜

Behavior Training Advice

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

A couple of months ago, I posted here looking to rehome my ACD/pittie mix Charlie following a violent encounter between him and my 16-year-old cat. While we're not out of the woods, we have modified our routine (and our house) and now they are separated at all times.

After giving it a lot of thought, and having done a LOT of research, I feel completely lost as to how best help him. Charlie is the sweetest boy, but is incredibly dog reactive, and more and more I'm realizing how anxious he is in new situations, especially outside.

We have tried lots of training methods and trainers, but nothing seems to stick. We did a board and train while I was in the hospital giving birth to my now 6-month old, but I don't think it ended up helping. They used an e-collar, which may be a helpful tool for basic obedience, but after all my research, I have realized it's not the solution for behavioral issues, at a minimum for those which have an underlying anxiety component.

After realizing this, we talked to a purely positive reinforcement trainer, who immediately recognized the anxiety in Charlie and told us it's probably better to not walk him and just have him exercise in our backyard because he's never going to enjoy walks/being outdoors. While I agree that walks are not productive right now and may make his anxiety worse, I don't want to give up on him. He is only 2.5 years old, and while he might never be friends with dogs, I want him to be able to experience the world beyond our house and yard.

Today, I did more research and came accross Bark Busters, which seems to be a completely different method. However, the reviews seem to suggest it is based on fear/alpha techniques, which my understanding is have been debunked.

I truly don't know what the right answer is, and I just want to help my boy. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. THANK YOU!

(Also, I just got a film camera and took this photo of Charlie ❤️)

Images & Videos Our Heeler/Lab foster dog that I love more than I should

We are fostering this 5 month old heeler/lab mix who came from a kill shelter. I intentionally picked him because my dream was to add a female red to the pack. I really didnt think I'd fall in love with him but hes got the gentle personality of a lab and the loyalty of an ACD. Physically, all lab but hes got a couple speckled heeler toes lol. Anyway, just an appreciation post for my foster, who is fitting into our pack way too good, and making me question everything.

Help Reactive Rescue

Rescue journey has been getting a little rough. Got my little dude in August, and it’s been great in so many ways. Lots of wins, he’s learned to walk and heel with me. He seems less reactive to many things.

But more recently he’s gotten aggressive towards me, gave him a bone and he freaked out when I looked at him. I‘ve sat there just to seem disinterested in his high value treats, and worked to be able to handle bones and have given them back. He seemed fine but he’s regressed into it even more so now.

He growls at me when I talk to him if I sit next his crate. He snapped at me while I was running his belly and playing him a little rough. He was letting me pick him up before which was useful for getting him into my truck.

He’s got terrible separation anxiety, I was getting him to be able to be alone for like 10 minutes at a time, but now he just cries like immediately and won’t stop at all.

My wife’s cried cause she‘s distraught, with the aggression and the separation stuff. He bit her thumb when she was trying to keep him away from chicken bones that was littered on the street.

For a while he would play chase, tug, and fetch, and now hes not interested anymore. Idk what‘s happened. We take him to training and he passed basic training for commands and stuff but the other stuff doesn’t seem to be clicking. Its hard to get stuff done since he reacts to dogs aggressively while on leash, and we haven't been able to leave him alone.

Behavior Training for barking at neighbors

I’m hoping that advice is allowed here. I have an almost 2 year old heeler mix. She’s a bit shy but typically friendly except in my shared backyard, where she has become VERY territorial.

I live in a house split into 3 units. We all enter/exit through the backyard as our parking is in the back alley. She barks incessantly at them if they come outside while I’m in the yard with her. I bring her inside as I know she looks scary to try to walk by.

I really want to get this under control. What training can I start with her? For now I’m keeping her on a leash at all times so I can bring her inside before she starts to bark but I would love for her to be able to run freely in the backyard since it was a primary reason for choosing this apartment.

I’ve had the first neighbors give her treats a few times but she hasn’t warmed up to them yet and I don’t want to make my neighbors uncomfortable about a scary dog living here.

I’m thinking about attaching a long lead to once side of the yard so neighbors can walk by without her running up to them but I’m also curious if anyone has had success with using an e collar for barking and reactivity (with proper training of course)

Need a rec for a dog bed (Australia)

Title, basically. My girl is a chewer; we can't get her rope toys because she'll just work it like a pair of scissors and shred it. We got one from our local PetbarnstockOco, but she'd use it for more of a toy than anything and eventually it was eviscerated. I need something heavy duty that she won't chew through in a few days.

Those of you with chewers, did you ever find one up to the task of a heeler?
