So You Want To Move To Botswana?

Ah, so you’re thinking about moving to Botswana? Let me tell you, this place has a lot of heart, but I’m not going to sugarcoat it—it’s not all sunshine and smooth roads.

First, the good stuff: Batswana are some of the most welcoming people you’ll ever meet. We believe in "Botho," which means we treat everyone with respect and kindness. You’ll feel like part of the community quickly, and trust me, there’s nothing like being invited to a braai (barbecue) or a traditional event. The sense of belonging here is real.

But let’s keep it 100. Life here can be tough. The heat? Eish, it’s no joke. Summers can feel like you’re living in an oven, and if you’re not used to it, it’ll take some time to adjust. The infrastructure isn’t always the best—potholes on the roads, slow internet, and power outages are just part of the deal. If you’re coming from a fast-paced, modern city, the slower pace and occasional frustrations might test your patience.

Jobs? It depends on what you do, but opportunities can be limited, especially if you’re not in certain industries like mining, tourism, or government UNLESS you have specialties that arent available in botswana (Mainly science and others). And while Botswana is peaceful and stable, like anywhere else, there are challenges—unemployment, especially among the youth, is a real issue, and it can feel heavy at times.

Now, let me be real with you: if you don’t have good qualifications or a solid plan, Botswana might not be the place for you. This isn’t a country where you can just show up and figure it out as you go. If you’re working a job like a cashier in the U.S. making $58,000 a year, you wont be able to get a job here. flat out. Salaries in Botswana are generally lower, and the cost of living can be high, especially if you’re used to a certain standard. And if you’re a young person thinking, "I’ll move to Botswana when I’m 18 and figure it out," think again. Without a clear plan, qualifications, or support, you’ll struggle.

That said, there’s hope on the horizon. With the new government, there’s talk of change—plans to improve infrastructure, create more jobs, and tackle some of the big issues we’re facing. It’s not going to happen overnight, but there’s a sense that things could get better. If you’re someone with skills, qualifications, and a clear plan, and you want to be part of a country that’s growing and evolving, this might be the perfect time to come.

But here’s the thing: Botswana has a way of growing on you. It’s not perfect, but it’s real. The people, the sense of community, the wide-open spaces, and the peace—it’s something you won’t find just anywhere. If you’re someone who can adapt, who values connection over convenience, and who’s willing to embrace both the beauty, struggles and culture, then Botswana might just feel like home.

So, if you’re up for the challenge, come. But come with a plan, with qualifications, and with realistic expectations. Botswana isn’t a place to escape your problems, this isnt LA where you live in lies where you and the people around you are pretending to be something you arent—it’s a place to build a life if you’re ready to put in the work. And who knows? With the new government, you might be part of the change that helps this country shine even brighter.

And If you’re serious about moving to Botswana With The Proper Qualifications, here are the relevant authorities and steps you’ll need to engage with to make your move official and smooth:

1. Department of Immigration and Citizenship

  • What they do: This is the main authority responsible for visas, permits, and residency requirements.

2. Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs

  • What you need to do:

    • Ensure your qualifications are recognized in Botswana (you may need to get them evaluated).
  • Contact:

3. Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS)

  • What they do: They handle tax-related matters, including tax registration for foreigners working in Botswana.
  • What you need to do:
    • Register for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) once you start working.
    • Understand Botswana’s tax laws to ensure compliance.
  • Contact:

4. Ministry of Nationality, Immigration, and Gender Affairs

    • If you plan to stay long-term or apply for citizenship, this is the department to engage with.
  • Contact:

5. Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC)

  • What they do: They assist investors and entrepreneurs looking to start businesses in Botswana.
  • What you need to do:
    • If you’re moving to Botswana to start a business, BITC can guide you on permits, incentives, and regulations.
  • Contact:

6. Local Councils (for Residency)

  • What they do: Local councils handle housing, utilities, and community services.
  • What you need to do:
    • Once you arrive, register with your local council for services like water, electricity, and waste management.
  • Contact:
    • Depends on your location (e.g., Gaborone City Council, Francistown City Council).

7. Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA)

  • What they do: They evaluate and recognize foreign qualifications.
  • What you need to do:
    • If you’re coming to work in a professional field, you may need to have your qualifications assessed and recognized.
  • Contact:

8. Botswana Police Service

  • What they do: They provide police clearance certificates, which are often required for visa and work permit applications.
  • What you need to do:
    • Obtain a police clearance certificate from your home country and, if necessary, from Botswana.
  • Contact:

9. Ministry of Health and Wellness

  • What they do: They oversee health regulations, including medical requirements for visa applications.
  • What you need to do:
    • Complete a medical examination and provide a health certificate as part of your visa application.

Question How do you decide where to eat or buy food in Francistown?

• Upvotes

I'm trying to understand how people in Francistown find and buy food, especially around Block 1 and similar areas. I'm not selling anything. I'm trying to learn what's actually frustrating before deciding whether to build anything.

Some questions:

When you eat out or buy food, how do you choose the place? Price, what's open, what you can see, a friend's recommendation?

When you order for a group, like an office lunch, a family gathering, or a meeting, how does it usually go? What goes wrong?

If you run a food stall or restaurant, how do customers place orders, and what slows you down during busy times?

Is there food you wish you could get but can't find around here

Casual 29 Male, queer, based in Maun . who wants to find his person before turning 30.

• Upvotes

I’m a 29-year-old queer man living in Maun, Botswana, and I thought I’d put myself out there because, honestly, I’d love to meet people who understand where I’m coming from.

A little about me: I work remotely, I’m a bird watcher, and I’m a pretty simple guy who appreciates the finer things in life. I’m also somewhat of an introvert. I have a small circle of friends, spend quite a lot of time indoors, and generally enjoy my own company. I’m not the kind of person who’s always out partying or socialising, so meeting new people doesn’t always come naturally to me.

But here’s the thing: enjoying my own company doesn’t mean I want to be lonely.

I’m turning 30 soon, and I’ve been thinking more about companionship and the kind of life I want to build. I don’t want to spend the next decade feeling like I’m doing everything alone. I’d love to have someone to share the little things with, someone to talk to after a long day, someone to make memories with, travel with, laugh with, and grow alongside.

I’m not desperate to be in a relationship, and I don’t want to settle just because I’m afraid of being alone. But I’m also tired of dating games, mixed signals, situationships, and connections that never seem to go anywhere.

At this stage of my life, I want something genuine. Someone emotionally available, affectionate, honest, and consistent. Someone who is intentional about getting to know me and is interested in building something meaningful together.

I don’t expect a perfect relationship. I just want mutual effort, good communication, and the feeling that we’re both choosing each other.

I’m open to meeting people from other places, too. Distance doesn’t necessarily bother me if there’s genuine interest and we’re both willing to make an effort. Ultimately, I’d love to build a connection that starts with good conversation, grows through genuine effort, and hopefully develops into something beautiful.

If you’re a queer guy who values honesty, consistency, affection, and building something real, I’d be happy to get to know you.

Question move to Gaborone or start my nail business in Francistown first?

Hey guys I have been contemplating on where i should start doing my business, I have the options between Gaborone and Ftown I have been living in Francistown for a while and noticed that a lot of nail techs have move to gabs and I’ve also realized there aren’t many in ftown as much as Gaborone but I do want to live Gaborone long term , the only cons is i will be living in extension 2 and the nail industr is quite saturated there and in Gaborone in general so i don’t know how to decide

Another thing to note is that in Francistown I will not have to spend as much on rent ,food etc but in Gaborone I will have to contribute rent within the city and also food transportation etc

I will be doing business at home,Gaborone honestly I don’t really have a great set up it will be at home you can see my bed etc I’m thinking of trying to cover that part by dividing with a curtain and that might cost a bit together with painting because the walls are messed up but in Francistown we have a private outdoor space thing I don’t know what it’s called but it’s shaded and I believe the customer will be comfortable

What would you do in my situation? Would you start in Ftown, build your clientele and save, then move to Gabs, or take the risk and start in Gabs from the beginning? I’d appreciate your honest opinions!

Discussion The problem with sending applications by email...

...is the silence.

Your email gets pushed down into e-mail inbox with time
HR doesn't respond to say they acknowledge your cv submission and consider you if at all there's an opening.

So but hand applications, I'm nervous. Wondering if it's worth the try.

Please share your experience or takes on this.

Big plus if you're a recruiter or work in HR.

Question Marketing partner wanted Botswana SaaS for local shops

Building myrewardflow - a simple promotions/coupon tool for local businesses in Botswana.

Product is live. Marketing is the hard part for me, and I want to work with someone who is strong at it — especially reaching small local businesses.

I’m not looking for free labour. A new product means commission-only can be unfair at the start, so I’m open to a proper arrangement, for example:

• a clear trial period with agreed terms

• commission / revenue share when shops start paying

• if it becomes a real long-term partnership, room to discuss ownership

I know people here are careful about new things, and that’s fair. I don’t want anyone to feel used. I’d rather agree something clear upfront than make big promises.

If you market to small businesses in Botswana and this sounds interesting, comment or DM and we can talk through how it could work.

Please visit myrewardflow.shop and check out https://vm.tiktok.com/ZS9yhApATfNqX-6Ol2X/
