Hi everyone!
I'm currently working on a project called Tower Cube — a completely custom PC case designed to combine a high-capacity NAS, an AI workstation, and a powerful multi-GPU system in a single enclosure.
>>Tower Cube<<
I've spent quite some time looking at existing cases, including the Jonsbo N5 and various server/workstation chassis, but none of them really meets all my requirements.
So I decided to explore designing my own case from scratch.
I'm now at the stage where I have a preliminary layout and I'm looking for feedback from people who have experience designing, fabricating, or modifying custom PC enclosures.
The overall concept
The case consists of two separate horizontal compartments stacked on top of each other, mechanically connected but with independent airflow.
Lower compartment — NAS/storage:
- 12 × 3.5" HDDs in the initial configuration
- Three removable HDD cages, each holding four drives
- Preparation for an optional second row of 12 HDDs (24 total)
- Dedicated, airflow-isolated PSU compartment
- 3 × 180 mm front intake fans
- 3 × 180 mm rear exhaust fans
- Optional middle fan bank if the second HDD row is installed
- No hot-swap backplanes — standard SATA data and power connections
One of the main design goals is HDD serviceability.
I'm considering making the entire front and rear fan assemblies removable, allowing access to the HDD cages from either side without having to disassemble the upper compartment.
The HDDs would be mounted with vibration isolation and approximately 45 mm center-to-center spacing, leaving around 19 mm between drive bodies before accounting for mounting hardware.
Upper compartment — workstation / AI:
Current hardware includes:
- ASUS Pro WS Z890-ACE SE motherboard
- Intel Core Ultra 9 285 CPU
- 128 GB DDR5 RAM
- Intel Arc Pro B70 GPU
- Broadcom / LSI 9500-16i HBA
- 3 × M.2 NVMe SSDs
- be quiet! Dark Power 14 1200 W PSU in the lower compartment
For CPU cooling, I'm considering either a be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 or an ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 420 AIO.
The long-term goal is to support couple high-power GPUs, potentially RTX 5090-class or RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell-class cards, plus the HBA. I know this will require revisiting the PSU capacity, PCIe card placement, and cooling.
Cooling concept
My priority is a quiet 24/7 system with enough cooling capacity for heavy workloads.
After comparing 140 mm, 180 mm, and 200 mm fans, I've decided to design around Fractal Design Dynamic X2 GP-18 PWM 180 mm fans.
The idea is to run them at low RPM during normal operation and automatically increase speeds based on HDD, CPU, GPU, and internal air temperatures.
The upper compartment currently has:
- 3 × 180 mm front intake
- 2 × 180 mm side intake
- 1 × 180 mm rear exhaust
- A separate side-mounted 420 mm AIO radiator with its own fans, or alternative case fans if air cooling is used
The compartments would be separated by a solid panel, with protected cable pass-throughs to prevent unwanted airflow between them.
Mechanical design
The preliminary footprint is roughly 730 × 540 mm (29 × 21 inches), although dimensions are still being refined.
I'm considering either:
- An aluminum extrusion frame with custom sheet-metal panels.
- A fully custom sheet-metal chassis with folded structural reinforcements.
Other planned features include:
- Removable side panels
- Modular, replaceable fan assemblies
- Removable four-drive cages
- Solid metal feet approximately 100 mm high, with rubber vibration-isolation pads
- Separate cable routing for HDDs, PSU, fans, and motherboard
- Enough room for future hardware upgrades
I'm also looking into professional fabrication companies that could help with CAD design, mechanical engineering, prototyping, and manufacturing a one-off enclosure.
What I'd really appreciate feedback on
Can anyone recommend a company in Europe that can design and manufacture a one-off custom PC chassis?
I'm based in the Czech Republic, so European manufacturers would be ideal.
I've attached the preliminary top-down layouts of both compartments. These are still conceptual drawings, not final production-ready CAD models.
I'm very open to suggestions, especially from people who have already gone through the process of building a custom enclosure.
My goal isn't simply to build a huge PC case — it's to create a quiet, modular, maintainable NAS and AI workstation that I can keep upgrading for years.
Thanks in advance for any advice, experience, criticism, or recommendations!
