PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
• Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

General Advice kitty got into lilies!!

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

UPDATE: ER vet called this morning and said he is doing very well. He had his baseline kidney panel done this morning and it was normal. They will repeat tonight. As long as that stays normal, it sounds like they may be ok with taking home. I am calling my vet this morning to get advice from them as well.

My poor Mr. Wilbur got into some lilies tonight. 😭
Thankfully I caught it almost immediately, wiped him down with a soapy rag, and rushed him to the ER vet. They induced vomiting and said it didn’t look like he’d actually eaten any, but they’re still concerned about exposure to the pollen. After a complete meltdown over the cost, we decided to leave him overnight for 24 hours of IV fluids and preventative care. The cost isn’t going to absolutely wreck us, but it’s definitely not something we were prepared to take on. We’ve already agreed to $3k for the first 24 hours, but the ER vet is recommending a full 48 hours, which would bring us to about $4.5k. 🤮 I am sooo torn. Obviously I want to do everything I can for him, but another $1,500 is so much money. Has anyone been through this? Would you do the first 24 hours and reassess based on his bloodwork and what the vet says, or just suck it up and pay for the full 48 hours?

P.s. Please be kind I’m already a wreck over this and just trying to figure out what’s best for my little guy 😭💔

Eye Issues Cats eye turned black

Thumbnail gallery
1.1k Upvotes

Hi all! Last night I noticed my cat not opening his eyes at all, and his right eye (left in the pictures) was leaking clear fluid. This morning he was opening his eyes but his whole eye is extremely dark still. He is eating like normal and otherwise acting normal. I would also like to say this was not a gradual change, this happened within hours.

We took him to the vet today, where they tested his blood pressure, eye pressure, vitals and blood and everything came back normal. They also said his eye was not reactive to light and that he could not see out of it. They said they didn’t know what was wrong and to come back if it happens to the other eye. They did not give him any medications or suggest a specialist. Does anyone have any insight?

Posting from the USA. He is a 15 y/o fixed domestic shorthair who also is diabetic.

General Advice Why does my cat do this when she is happy to see me?

As the title says! This is my 5 year old girl & ive gad her for a couple months now. I got her from previous owners. Ever since I got her she always fluffs up & arches her back when shes excited to see me. She walks around like this when it happens. I thought this is usually a sign of distress so Im curious what it may mean otherwise? Or if anyone else has a cat that does this.

Update Update on little Wormy

Thumbnail gallery
629 Upvotes

I just wrote an update and accidentally deleted it so heres take 2🥲

The only appointment i could get was for 5pm however after a lot of pleading and honestly a bit of crying, they agreed to take her in for the whole day on top of the actual appointment which i was a lot more happier with.

The first thing they told me was that she has a very small heart murmur. Unfortunately their heart specialist wasn’t in so another appointment has been made for the day he gets back for a procedure and a much more closer look.

They then told me her labs all came back perfect however she did she still have dilated pupils from her second seizure which happened before she was taken to the vets but they did eventually go down. The vet then sat me down and studied all the videos i had taken while i also gave added information about what occurred before i was able to press play on them. She was very kind and carefully explained the things happening in her seizures including the moments that poor worm was visually impaired which i didn’t realise.

She did say they are seizures. We discussed a lot of the things i saw on here, talked a lot on why some don’t fit. And yes i made sure to ask about paroxysmal dyskinesia and she explained that it would be the same treatment that she will be receiving and a diagnosis like that would have to go through a specialist. We then spoke about going to a specialist especially for an MRI however the closest one to me is quite far and she didn’t think i should explore this route yet until i can find a designated driver. Unfortunately it is just me and Wormy and i don’t drive so i will be looking into finding a safe and as stress free as possible way for us to travel to them. She was also prescribed some meds that she says will hopefully stop them although they didn’t have the medication itself in so i have to wait until its delivered to start her on them.

She has told me any future seizures i have to log, record and time and then call them to log each one on her file. Shes only concerned if they last longer than 5 minutes which when i should then take her back in.

Wormy became quite the attention hogger in the observation kennels i was told, giving out lots of love and eating all the good licky treats she could persuade them to give her. I think i had a more stressful day than Worm!😂

She has now returned home with me and given me lots of cuddles. Hopefully no seizures tonight PLEASE i have not slept since the morning of that first one 😭 Shes doing very well over than looking quite shocked by the vet bill (dw she smelled something smelly no other reason for the face.

The vet staff were incredibly kind and understanding to me and cannot owe them enough for how they’ve treated my Worm.

Finally I want to thank everyone for the kind words, advice and information i was given on my first post. You guys really helped me gather everything needed for the vets and reassured me when i have been so stressed. What an incredibly supportive sub!

Behavioral Issue Is my cat sending mixed messages with her body language? Why, and what is she trying to communicate? (Read caption)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This isn't strictly urgent, but I am enthusiastic about learning about my cat's body language, tail language, and vocalisations. So I'm seeking input from anyone specialising in the field of feline behaviour.

My cat (Fifi, 10 months, neutered, in otherwise good health) does this a lot - she purrs enthusiastically and engages in slow blinking, nose booping when getting pets. All good stuff! But she's simultaneously flicking her tail at the same time - which usually indicates frustration.

I regularly check in with her (by offering my hand to sniff) to see if she wants me to stop petting her, but she seems fine and wants me to continue. But I have this feeling that she could be communicating a specific need that I'm not picking up on!

I'm super grateful for any insights folks may have.

TL;DR: Seeking insights from qualified specialists in the field of feline behaviour/communication, because my cat appears to be giving mixed messages when she's getting pets, about half of the time. Is this just her 'tortietude' or is there a hidden message I'm missing?

Additional info:

- My cat is covered and has access to a vet - I don't believe this warrants a vet visit, but if something is up, I'm prepared to get her checked out.

- I'm posting from the UK.

- Fifi is a female DSH, tortoiseshell colour, spayed

- She's otherwise in good health; she's recently recovering from an umbilical hernia repair (surgeon reports no complications, surgery site has since healed very nicely).

- Fifi is 10, nearly 11 months old.

Behavioral Issue Cat not eating or drinking

Thumbnail gallery
113 Upvotes

So I don't really know how to describe this situation other than it being an emergency, but I just wanted to know if other cat owners have been through this, and if so, how they handled the situation/how the cat is doing after, cause I'm a minor in France so I can't exactly bring him to the vet myself. I'm also worried about possible irreversible damage, especially concerning the kidneys/liver. Keep in mind, my cat absolutely hates being stuck inside the house, loves being out in the streets all day and is usually energetic when he wants to. Also loves food.

Basically, a few weeks ago, my cat Peanut, 5-6 yo neutered male, got bit by another cat on the side of his face, which caused an abscess. That was sorted out pretty well, spent two weeks in a cone, fed him with a spoon, gave him medication, kept him inside and got it healed. But after taking off the cone, he wasn't the same. He drank and ate less, he stopped going outside even though we left the doors wide open and normally he would run out, but he just sat there. We thought he just needed time to adjust, but after a week, we noticed that his urine was bright orange, we knew that wasn't normal. During the check-up at the vet, they didn't manage to take a urine sample (he pissed in the carrier) but they told us he was most likely traumatized, and gave us urinal comfort treats and anxiety medication for him. So we started giving him, but he started to throw up. And then he wasn't only not eating or drinking much, he completely stopped. My mom decided we shouldn't give him the meds anymore because obviously it's getting worse. It's now been 4? days, and he just sits in front of his water bowl, sniffing the water, but not drinking. And he seems to hate food now. He does go out now, but he's not in the right health to be out, he can barely run. I was bawling my eyes out today, worried that I might wake up to him completely starved, dehydrated and unresponsive, or him getting heavily injured in the streets due to his weak state and not being able to come home. I kept telling my parents to call the vet again but they said it's too expensive, but honestly I think they just don't care. They said they will though. Idk if I believe them. I considered giving him water with a syringe, if that helps? Also I find his mouth and ears quite yellow, so I'm thinking he's started getting some liver issues.

What can I do at home and will this situation be fatal?

Sorry if it's too long, I'm really worried.

TL;DR: Cat got an injury but completely changed after healing, gradually stopped eating and drinking and it's been like that for a few days, despite veterinary intervention.

Update : We finally got an appointment for this afternoon, I also gave him a nice amount of water so he can hold on at least a while. He's sleeping well while we wait. I just wish the appointment would've been set earlier... Thank you so much for all the support and advice!! Usually I go on reddit as a last resort, and every time, everyone is so kind. I'm so happy that this is a welcoming community 🫶

Kitten Help Long time farm cat owner, first time indoor kitten owner.

Post image
114 Upvotes

Ive had farm cats my whole life (25 years), and they always lived in the barn with no problem, I Raised many of them from kittens in fact.

But this little guy is new to me, and ive never seen this kind of behavior from any farm cat ever. He is consistently trying to fight with me, biting my hands, pouncing on my feet, and screaming at me when I try and play with him.

He seems very endearing when hes tired, and 9 times out of 10, he falls asleep either beside me in my recliner or in my lap. But as soon as his eyes open, its game on again and hes right back to biting me and screaming at me.

Is this normal behavior for a kitten? I know the orange ones are usually a bit special in comparison but my god hes a lot.

Hes about 6 weeks old, I adopted him early because his mom rejected him at about 3 weeks old. Hes already eating solid food and is gaining weight and size.

Thanks in advance guys.

Eye Issues cat scratch

on friday, my cat scratched my others cats eyes. a little while later, we realized there was some blood on the floor. i began searching for my cat(oreo) and i wasn’t able to find her. the more time that passed the more we were freaking out. finally i found here and noticed she wasn’t right:/ her eye was shut and it looked swollen. i keep freakin out and she hasn’t been eating/drinking, using the restroom, or moving from the spot we put here in since Saturday night. i keep insisting to take her to the vet but we don’t have enough money to afford it. is there a chance she’ll heal? what can we do at home to help her. or is it serious enough that i should definitely take here to the vet? right now she’s opening her eye a bit more but still isn’t getting up like she usually does and hasn’t used the restroom. i would like to say that it isn’t my choice to not taking her to the vet i really want her to but im not the one who makes the decisions. she’s is not spayed oreo is over 13 years old.

Spay/Neuter Question Is this a good alternative?? PLEASE HELP

Hi! first time cat owner here. I’m 19, my cat is a one year old girl and I just got her spayed!

I got my kitty a soft cone for her recovery but she keeps either kicking them off or doing backflips attempting to. I really don’t want her to tear anything back up so I put this shirt over her and left a hole for her to pee and poop from but I just want to make sure it’s a safe alternative for her or not!

TLDR: is shirt sleeve safe to cover her surgery scar while it heals or should I find a different alternative ?

General Advice should I push for blood tests?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

so I've already been to the vet, and my kitty has a good bill of health besides being slightly chubby but I'm coming here to ask if y'all think I should push for more testing - my (30, USA) cat Oz (4, neutered male) jumped up on my lap and cuddled me while I voice chatted with friends, everything seemed normal, until I looked down and saw he was shaking, I honestly thought it was a seizure until I said his name and touched his cheek and he looked at me, alert, it also appeared that his weird trembling was just his head and neck rather than his full body, I got a video of the tail end of this episode he didn't loose his bladder or his bowels and he also didn't throw up before or after and he had also just eaten, he walked, ran and acted completely normal before and after (he was also purring both before and after I noticed it, which I know cats can do when they're in pain but he was kneading me like it was a happy purr? you can even see him knead me in the video) I also checked his pupils and they constricted normally when I shined a light in his eyes, he's also not had this reoccur in any of the days since the first episode nor since we've been to the vet which is part of why he didn't get blood tests right away, but it keeps nagging at my mind cause the whole thing was so weird. the vet said we could do blood tests for him if it was a problem again, but I'm wondering if I should push for blood tests now? I'm going back in a couple weeks to get some booster vaccines for him and his sister anyway (they already did get blood tests for FIV but that was for the leukemia vaccine, unrelated to the trembling)

Behavioral Issue Bonded brothers, one is eating the other’s whiskers

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hello all. These are my babie boys Gene Parmesan (left) and Spaghetti (right.) They are rescue cats from a junkyard and may be biological brothers, we aren’t sure, but Gene is about 6 months older. When I tell you these cats are BEST FRIENDS. Spaghetti especially is obsessed with Gene. They spend about 75% of the day together cuddling, watching squirrels and birds, playing, wrestling, and grooming each other. They do have independent activities they like to do, also. Over the past year we’ve noticed a couple of times where Spaghetti’s whiskers were extremely short, almost completely gone. We have brought it up to the vet twice and they did not seem at all concerned. We figured it was Gene grooming his whiskers off and I just witnessed it with my own eyes. They were cuddling and grooming each other and both purring like crazy and Gene was going ham licking Spaghetti’s face and started biting and nibbling on his cheeks. Spaghetti really did not seem to mind at all and kept purring and looked so happy. Should we be concerned? Do we need to discourage this behavior and if so, how can we? Thanks in advance!!

Eye Issues eye changing colour ?

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Hi all! I’ve been a little worried about Mika’s eye, as you can see it’s getting these darker speckles and whatnot and it’s changing more and more (darker, more speckles) as time goes on. This has been happening for a while, but it doesn’t seem to be bothering her at all and she has no other issues. She’s 15 now, so maybe it’s got something to do with her age? Just wondering if this is something worth checking at the vets since it’ll cost quite a lot and stress her out which isn’t worth it if it turns out to be nothing. Hopefully someone here can provide some insight or maybe has had a similar thing happen and can give advice!

Behavioral Issue Is this bullying?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi guys, I was wondering if this looks like bullying to you as the white cat seems to have an "overreaction" to bring near the tabby. Does it seem like the tabby is bullying her? Like trying to irritate her on purpose? Or is it more like inappropriate play? The cats have been together for 8 months now and this behavior happens whenever they are close to each other. When the tabby first moved in he did pounce on her a few times which she didn't like but that was months ago. Just wondering what I can do, if anything, to make the white cat more comfortable as it seems like this is stressing her out

22F, USA, vet accessible, unsure if this is bullying, 1yo M neutered vs 2yo F spayed, can afford vet

Abnormal Vomit/Excreta Cat Keeps Vomiting Despite Having an Automatic Feeder with Controlled portions

• Upvotes

So basically my cat has had an issue of over eating in the past with a gravity feeder which we replaced with an automatic feeder with small and controlled portions

He basically eats two 1/8 cup meals throughout the day and maybe just a few pieces of meow mix as a treat. And he does go a few weeks of being fine but then this morning he threw up twice. The vomit was watery and the food was barely digested

Im not sure if I should bring him to the vet as he is still full of energy and wants to play immediately afterwards but I don’t know anymore. I do notice he eats super fast with whatever I feed him.

Age 25
Country US

Main issue: Frequent vomiting

Breathing Issues Cat diagnosed with pneumonia earlier today at vet clinic, should I take her in to the emergency?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m 22f, based in USA, Cat 11+ Female spayed. Already went to vet earlier. Basically my cat had a cough for two weeks that we thought was just a hair ball. The last time we took her in we were told she had a cough due to a hairball being stuck. Given medicine for it and she coughed it up. She started coughing again and we figured that must’ve been the issue, but she coughed clear mucus this time. Figured to take her to the vet the following day. This morning she started gagging in pain with nothing coming out. Noticed breathing issues. Took her to the vet clinic and they said she was dehydrated and also X-rays showed pneumonia along with “abnormal bowels”. Got her medicine, and was told they couldn’t drain the fluid or give her IV. Just medicine. Also gave her her arthritis shot. She ate four packs of churu but not much else. Peed once. Is this breathing normal?

General Advice Senior cat drooling (?)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello!! This is my cat Fatty and I’ve had him for 11 years. Over the past few years (I wanna guess 2-3), he’s been drooling every time I pet him after not seeing him for a day/a few days. You can see drops of drool dripping from the sides, and sometimes it gets on my arms if he headbutts me lol. Is this normal or something I should be concerned about? I’m 20, from CA USA, have not contacted a vet about this, he’s neutered, and I can afford vet care. He recently went to the vet and they reported no problems with him whatsoever.

TLDR: My senior cat is drooling sometimes when receiving affection, is this normal?

Edit: Thank you so much for all your comments and help!! It puts me at ease to know this is more common/normal than I thought it was. 🫶
