Awaiting Flair AI Spam Bots

We have seen a HUGE uptick in obviously ChatGPT/Similar written spam comments, especially on recommendation requests.

Please report them. I'm not sure how Reddit plans on dealing with this trash, but I suspect they won't do shit.

Thanks users, us mods really appreciate your reporting and so on for that stuff.

Kitchen Some tips on using the Toaks wood stove (small)

The Toaks wood stove is a great ultralight titanium backpacking stove, though most people know them for their titanium pots and siphon burner. It has several quirks that must be managed to make best use of the stove but I really enjoy using a wood fired stove when camping. I forgot to add it to the slides, but additionally the outer section of the stove can be used as a windscreen and pot stand for an alcohol stove.

Sleeping Systems I’m looking for opinions on hammock under quilts!

I’m a backpacker and am still gathering gear to go out solo/with groups (school). I have a crappy little bivy sack type tent, but am hoping to use my hammock more for sleeping!

I went out about a month ago with my hammock, and overnight temperatures were down to -3°c ish. I was cold, but (mostly) able to sleep with the help of hand warmers and a hot water bottle, I used a blue foamy and my little air mattress with an R value of 1.5.

I’ve used an underquilt before, I borrowed it off a friend and didn’t think to look at what it was, but I would like one of my own!

Would it be best to get down or synthetic?

Should I go for a full length, or 3/4?

I’m just starting out, so I’m not looking for super expensive, but I’d like something that will keep me warm and that will last.

Also if you have advice about tarps for overtop of the hammock!

TIA!

Awaiting Flair Zenbivvy Pad feedback

Im gonna buy a Zenbivvy Ultralight quilt and sheet set up - wondering about the sleeping pad though.

The Nemo Elcipse All Season pad seems to be getting better reviews? Id probably get a long-wide and am wondering if anyone here has paired that with the L zenbivvy set up. If not, why not? How are you finding the zenbivvy UL pad?

Awaiting Flair Portable Fire Pit

Hello,

I'm looking for a somewhat lightweight firepit for camping.

This is for backcountry camping where fires are permitted as long as you bring a fire pan and pack out ashes.

Something like the link below. Wondering if anyone has a recommendation.

Thanks!

Awaiting Flair Colman propane stove (flame adjuster)

Post image
72 Upvotes

I’ve always had issues trying to get a very low flame and find that I sit there, tapping the controls in order to get the flame where I want it. Even being at its maximum flame capacity the control seems to only be open about a 16th of a turn. Is this normal? Is there something I can do to get better use from this stove? I feel like I’m missing an upgraded valve or regulator that I’m not aware of.

Edit: As suggested below, I cleaned and greased the valves and it’s incredibly more easily adjusted. Thank you so much everyone.

Gear Question Need help identifying this bag.

Thumbnail

I have the same model as in the picture, but mine is a dark green color on the outside. There is a velcro flap at the top end of the zipper with a red, embroidered fjällräven curled fox logo. The compression bag features the same logo and has no other markings.

It feels pretty warm, and almost instantly causes me to get hot and sweaty indoors, but I haven't had a chance to test it outside properly. A second hand listing (the attached photos are from that listing) approximated the temperature rating at +4°C.

Google is useless for any info about this bag, does someone recognize the model? Would be very happy to receive any and all info, thanks.

Awaiting Flair Which tent should I consider?

I made a post earlier about budget tents for bikepacking. I have now been offered naturehike cloud up pro 2 for 120€ by a friend.

Then I have watched naturehike cloud peak 2 for 180€.

Which one should I pick? I'm using it in max -20C° clear winter conditions.

I have absolutely 0 market for used tents here with this budget so it has to be new.

Gear Question Mylar sleeping bags and condensation when used as an outer cover?

I've never used a mylar sleeping bag and to be honest until recently I didn't even know they existed.

But I know that mylar tend to cause condensation when used for a longer duration. And I figure that is doubly true if you crawl into a bag of mylar.

However, I was thinking of using it in combination with other sleep gear such as a blanket/quilt/sleeping bag and just use the mylar bag as an outside cover around my regular sleep gear. To get some extra protection against cold, wind and such on occasion.

But I'm concerned if that will still cause lots of condensation around the rest of the sleeping gear so that would get wet and cold in turn. Or if the extra layer of isolation between the mylar and my body (esp. sweat and breath) would mean there wouldn't be much condensation inside the mylar bag so things would stay reasonably dry?

Anyone tried it and knows from experience how good it works? And how much condensation is created when using other sleeping gear inside the mylar bag? Is it a good or bad idea?

Awaiting Flair How can I repair this Coleman folding chair?

The black padded edging on my Coleman chair is badly frayed, with the white fibres underneath exposed. The beige seat fabric seems to be intact.
What materials would you recommend, and what is the best way to fix the edging so it lasts?
I would prefer a simple DIY repair rather than replacing the whole chair.

Photos show the two sides for comparison

Gear Question Jetboil second hand

I just bought a jetboil second hand. Only got the pot and the burner for 44 euro. I'm hearing some mixed reviews. I usually use my trangia or biolite but got the jetboil to try to cut weight.

You guys think it was a good decision?

I've been looking at combining a cheap titanium pots and burner on Amazon but can't decide on what to get, found this and felt like it might be a good compromise for the price.

Gear Question Any straps that use the Fjallraven Singi style toggles to anchor accessories to their packs?

Fjallraven's Singi backpacks have molle-like loops to accept attachments, and they sell a few items that have these toggles for anchoring into the loops. But they don't sell a compression strap. You can buy a small pocket accessory shown here that shows the toggles, and that includes a separate compression webbing belt with toggles at it's ends. But it's like $40 for the pair which is a lot for just the strap.

I haven't seen anyone else that sells straps with those kind of toggles to attach it to the bag. Anyone ever come across any?

I plan to just get a few hook-and-gate type compression straps to lash a tent/bag to my pack, but wondering if there's anything that uses something like these thin toggles.

Awaiting Flair Need advice on buying a tent

Hello! I am looking to upgrade my tent; A 1 person, 4 season tent that is very durable and reliable. The weight is not too important to me, though I would like to keep it under 2kgs.

I have looked at the Arcdome 1+ which looked amazing to me, the color however did not. I like camping in the wilderness, and some places do not allow it so I would like the tent not to be easily spotted. (Yes, I leave nothing behind and camp clean)

The cost doesn't matter to be as a reliable tent is invaluable.

If you have any suggestion I'd love to hear and take a look at them!

Electronics Best compact projector for tent camping (powered by USB-C power bank)?

Looking for a solid mini/portable projector to use inside a tent while camping.

Must-haves:
Powered over USB-C via a Power Delivery power bank (no standard wall plug needed)
Not too big or heavy (backpacking/car camping friendly)
Easy setup/auto-keystone to project onto a tent wall/ceiling

What are you guys using that actually works well off-grid?
