Realized this last week that I need to build a backup cargo bike for when one goes down.

During the pandemic I started delivering beer for a local brewery (it was a great side gig). I bought a back up when my rig went down. The money I missed out on was 50% of another machine. So I had 2 Bullitts I could switch between.

After moving to another state and leaving delivery work behind, I dropped down to 1 Bullitt. I had no need for a backup anymore - until my remaining Bullitt got damaged and I was off it for 3 weeks. I use it to get around excusively. Its way more fun and Im not paying for gas. Living in SoCal you can ride without pain for 350 days of the year.

Its back up and running now, but those 3 weeks drove me so insane, I am planning a new backup build. Which is crazy because there will be a lot of money involved. But I cannot be sidelined again like I was for this brief period of time.

I am also riding a Bullitt X now, so a backup for this is going to be a grip of money. Frame first and then the parts.

Some pics of my Bullitts. My current one is the green Bullitt X.

This year's Urban Arrow Halloween Costume: Space Shuttle!

This has turned into a bit of a Halloween tradition for our family (see 2025's X-Wing and 2024's Pirate Ship).

I was inspired by the black and white color scheme of our bike, and this year was able to turn it into a Space Shuttle! We've already had it out in our first set of Halloween events and it looks and handles great! The bike still rides about the same as normal, I just have to take care with the width of the wings.

The shuttle body is a PVC skeleton, with a duct tape skin. Plus some cardboard for the tail and rear engines. I took progress pics as I went so will be able to post a writeup on how to reproduce it in case there are any Enterprising (pun intended) cargo bikers out there who get inspired.

Overall, I think this one came out great - let me know what you think!

Cargo Solutions Over the Years, Best to Worsr

  1. Argo Cargo v1 kit.

Pros - relatively easy to install, easy to detach bike, huge cargo capacity, great visibility of cargo and awareness of bike size, easy to load, surprisingly light, dog loves it. Fun to ride. I didn’t have to swap a bunch of components over, just bolted on a bike as-is. Just damn cool.

Cons - wide turning radius, wobbly at low speeds, bad handling off of pavement, a little flexy, out of production and increasingly rare.

  1. Mongoose Envoy

Pros - mid tail that basically rides like a regular bike. Best handling of the lot. Good handling in tight quarters and on gravel and easy singletrack. Light (aluminum). Braze ons galore. Cheap. Mostly modern standards.

Cons - mostly cheap junk components that are just barely good enough. Included pannier bags suck ass, basically useless (I added running boards and refashioned them into cargo slings). General gripe with longtails, they are a bit of a pain to load - require careful balancing and distribution and big wide objects just don’t fit well. Also not great for carrying the dog.

  1. Burly Coho XC

Pros - Attaches to any bike. Fine off road and on light single-track. Easy to detach and store. Handles very well for a trailer. Had suspension. Very clever QR attachment system.

Cons - It’s still a trailer. Awkward to navigate around town. Limited awareness of what’s going on with your cargo and hard to judge total length. Limited capacity.

  1. Two Wheel Kid Hauler

Pros - It was free on Craigslist

Cons - Everything Else. These two wheel trailers are often cheap/free and are easy to find, and haul a surprising amount of cargo, but are cheaply made, badly designed, and just miserable to use. They’re okay for hauling stuff short distances, say a mile or two tops, on flat, easy terrain at best.

Crate Recommendation

I found this crate after trying a bunch of different models and I'd highly recommend it:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F2W5XQ7L

I've found 17" wide to be the perfect sweet spot - it fits two grocery bags perfectly. And the 11" height keeps everything securely inside without needing to use any bungee cords most of the time.

Advice on front and back basket

Hi there,

I live in Ireland and have just bought a Kuma Bikes Alpa e Cargo (pictured attached). One of the reasons why I bought a cargo bike was to do and carry the week’s grocery shopping.

Although the front and back basket are big, if I put shopping bags in them, especially the back basket, they would just fall out.

Any advice on what I should put in the back and the front to help with carry groceries or any other kind of cargo?

Pictures attached. Thanks!

Bike on a bike (fail)

The cargo bike is “petit porteur” from France, perfect to carry 3 standard beer bottle crate (12x75cl) but not fit for this job tho

Any extensive list of pannier strap options and other full setups?

I might find where to crosspost. Maybe suggest. Currently I've got a Topeak bag with velcro but the two straps on the front (or back if you switch the bag around) only lines up on one side. So I can velcro the left side so it doesn't slide forward. The horizontal velcro underneath holds decently. But I need ways to fasten the bag better. So rather than asking a one off question, I hope you understand and appreciate the underlying extent that I'd prefer to ask extensive options and plan to get bunch of kits or being aware whenever I need any.

I have a few setups or may change it up later. But for doing meal deliveries, the zipper on this topeak is quick enough I can get a bike lock out quickly. It matters.

So while I could get a different bag, etc, any option can't drawback to different problem. So unless I am shifting this bag to another bike, etc, or there's a bag that works perfectly, I might lean toward focusing on improving this setup. While also certainly asking more overall ideas what pannier bags to buy next time.

For example I'd love to know some secure but easily removable ties like those silicone Nite Ize ties or something like a round cord that can tighten. The Topeak bag has a plastic loop I want to basically tie down to the rear of the bag. Branch it left and right so it holds. One anchor point on the Topeak, two anchors down to the rack.

I'm not sure how to secure the bottom velcro any better.

The bike pannier rack comes with its own bungee strap. And the rack is long enough I can maybe remove the Topeak bag and attach a small box, think like personal pizza size box, etc. And then try to re-attach the Topeak bag, tip up one side so the pizza box is strapped down and able to wedge the Topeak a little crooked sitting over top on the rare occasion I get an order like that.

Otherwise eventually I can post my other setups and ideas for other commuting. I've got one of those Styrofoam cases. And might eventually get an Ortlieb XL for grocery runs or travel.

For now, really I'm just wondering if there's a cheap off brand or extremely good pannier bag or way to strap this Topeak down. If there's also a list of kinds of straps I can buy. TPU straps, or ways to custom add my own anchor points to the bag, or add a Topeak quick release somehow to this bag.

Or anything I'm not thinking of to have capability to carry small pizza box and still have my utility bag and side panniers, without carrying it in one hand. Not good. Or spending too much time to rig it and not very secure. I would love to know a bunch of options and just buy a ton.

Keeping kids warm on a longtail in winter

I try to keep biking into the fall and winter months with my kiddo, but want to keep the chill and wind off of him. For longer rides, I can really bundle him up in snow pants. But for the very short ride to school, I need something easy. In the past, I just wrapped him in a blanket, but it wasn't ideal. Would love insight from the community.

Two top options:

- Lark's Bike Blanket. Seems like a great option. Curious to hear the difference between the wren and the winter edition, and how well it fits (kid is 7, I have an Aventon Abound LR with monkey bar style seat)

- Water-resistent wearable blanket. Snuggie type products, sometimes also marketed as Stadium Blankets. These look like they might cover arms better, and have a hood (he wears a balaclava under his helmet, but still),

- Other options? I think a full enclosure might be overkill, I'm going in wind, cold, and maybe light misting, not a rain storm.
