What's that one run that destroyed a character or almost did?

So there are some runs that destroy a character to a point they don't use them or have to put that character on ice for a time. To you all what has been that run that ended a character's time

Discussion Arcs You Don't Like In Runs You Enjoy?

I've been bingeing the Delano Hellblazer and really enjoying it. He has a great knack for horror and atmosphere, and while some of the social commentary is lost on me being a Canadian Zoomer, the stuff that hits on topics like the Thatcher government and religious fundamentalism hit really hard. First two volumes were sublime.

Then with The Fear Machine, I hit a wall. I typically love high concept, cerebral books: Morrison is one of my favourite writers, and I really like what little I've read of Hickman as well. I had grown accustomed to and appreciative of Delano's verbosity, but this was just too much. It feels like 3 issues nothing happens but buildup, and attempts to show the scope of the conspiracy just ended up making the characters and plotthreads jumbled and confusing. The fact it goes on for like 9 issues and ends rather unsatisfyingly soured me on it even more. It also lacks a lot of overt horror. The early issues didn't make me wet my pants or anything, but there are a lot of scary implications and visuals in stories like the one with the man who kidnaps John's niece and the whole of the Newcastle Incident. As soon as I got to The Family Man, I breathed a sigh of relief, and immediately fell back on the wagon.

I've experienced this a lot less in Western comics than I have Manga. Recently I started reading Hunter x Hunter and I was getting really bored with the Heaven's Arena arc due to my fave characters Kurapika and Leorio being shafter in favour of the less interesting Gon and Killua, but the arc that follows was superb. Likewise, as much as I love Diamond is Unbreakable, some of the arcs like Rock Paper Scissors Boy and Cheap Trick feel forgettable.

I know a lot of people think this way about Claremont's early New Mutants, and yeah it isn't nearly as fantastic as Demon Bear or Legion, but I found Nova Roma really enjoyable for how absurd the premise is, and also the entire character of Selene in general.

What are your cases of runs you love with that one stretch of issues you just can't down with?

Question What should I read from Garth Ennis

Garth Ennis is one of those creators I always hear come up in comic conversations and I heard he's good and people like him but my only knowledge of him is that I have read some of his punisher stuff and I liked it. But then I have also read his cross and the boys comics and I thought they were okay they were graphic but they had their moments of comedy and I believe I understood a lot of the undertone he was trying to tell with those stories about if heroes were real or humanity if people had no filter and stuff like that. But I also thought that they were kind of just edgy for the sake of being edgy and I'm just wondering if that's pretty much what is stuff is like.

Now I know of two other of his works them being preacher and hellblazer which I've always been meaning to read those comics because I'm a fan of Constantine from the TV show and the animated DC movies. I've also started watching preacher finally and I've been enjoying.

But that's all I've known and read so I'm just wondering if people could recommend me any other stuff he did that I can find on the DC and Marvel apps or anything really good that he did outside of those two companies

I thought it was an extremely good mini that had me emotional as someone who lost a pet, but I want to know if anyone else felt the same reading it and I also liked how Paul evolved the relationship between Bob and the Void and the Sentry in an interesting way and I love how Paul always brings out the introspective and sensitive part of his personality which i found a nice touch

Excerpt Which comic book fights really work on the page? I looked through 45 years, year by year, to find 25 of the best

Most lists of the “best comic fights” are really just lists of the most important fights. They focus on really big stakes or famous characters, and covers you’ve seen a hundred times.

But I wanted something different, fights that are great because of how they work as comics. The point is you can follow every moment from panel to panel, the page turn hits like a punch, and the layout leaves you wrung out.

I’ve been reading comics since the early ’80s so I went through 45 years of Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, and Valiant and picked the 25 fights that do it best. This is NOT a ranked list, I think most ranked lists are crap because it's too subjective. I go in chronological order. For example:

Daredevil Vol. 3 #25 (Waid & Samnee, 2013): Matt fights Ikari, who also has radar sense, so Matt loses his main advantage. In an empty sporting goods store Samnee stretches a single reaching movement across three narrow panels as a broken sprinkler rains down, so a split second turns into an agonizing pause. Only comics can create that kind of suspense.

And a few very different ones from the list:

  • Wolverine #4: Miller slows the duel down and lets you watch Logan calculate distance
  • G.I. Joe #21: a whole castle infiltration with no dialogue, captions, or sound effects
  • Thor #380: every exchange gets its own splash page, so each page turn feels like it costs Thor something
  • Usagi Yojimbo #60: the bow before the duel is drawn with as much care as the duel itself
  • Orphan and the Five Beasts #4: The fight takes up almost the whole issue, with very little dialogue, and each page turn raises the stakes with new attacks, new forms, etc.

One famous fight I left out: Batman vs. Superman in DKR #4. The mud-pit rematch with the Mutant Leader in #2 beat it, and I explain why in my write-up.

Part 1 (1980–1993): https://sagaofthejasonite.com/best-fights-in-comics-part-1/
Part 2 (2000–now, plus honorable mentions): https://sagaofthejasonite.com/best-fights-in-comics-part-2/

It's really meant to be a resource for people looking for great fights, where the quality of the comic is good too.

Discussion I miss horror hosts in horror comics, or generally I miss hosts in comics.

The next sessions of a comic book club in the last week of October will feature a horror anthology. And when you look at anthologies in this genre, you notice one thing that the old ones have, which the new ones often unfortunately lack: a host. Host in Horror They themselves could become just as big a brand as the monsters and serial killers they portrayed. You hav classic like Rod Serling, Alfred Hitchcock or Vampira that where Golden Age Hollywood class, Campy legends like Elvira, Elvira’s Midnight Madness, Bob Wilkins and Svengoolie. And hey, this tradition has also found its way into video games, for example, supermassive games horror adventures from until dawn, The Quarry and above all, the first season of The Dark Pictures Anthology, The hosts even have relevant gameplay decisions in the game, such as when they ask you questions and how you should answer them. People were quite sad (like me) when the second season of The Dark Pictures Anthology started with Directorate 8020 without the host curator no longer in the intervening capital and they are also canceled.

It's a tradition that has almost died out. And you notice this most of all in horror anthologies in comics. The Crypt-Keeper is a legend, It's actually still the most famous one to this day, because he was even adapted for the HBO show. But many were forgotten, or they became main characters, Vampirella was in her first years a host, Many of DC's horror hosts also became main characters with the Sandman series. Even though there are still many modern anthologies, the host became rare. Stuff of Nightmares had The Nightmare Keeper or oni press EC comics made three new The Grave-Digger, The Tormentor, The Grim Inquisitor But somehow they don't really get close to the legends of the original EC.

The reason the hosts have disappeared is precisely because the thing with anthologies is that all the stories can stand on their own as independent stories, but that doesn't really create a true brand power. Therefore, you needed a host, and he acted as a kind of figurehead, inviting you to read it there. But at that time, comic artists were significantly more well-known; now, readers generally no longer need such a fictional host, If comic creators now want to make a collection of short stories, they can simply do so.

But the thing is host where not just a horror comic thing. Marvel comics had a long time when Stan Lee was kind of host for decades in every Marvel comic and 2000AD had THARG the Mighty, there the fictional, green-skinned alien editor. It has fun that you have someone who presents these things to you, a showman, woman or Alien that takes you to those wonder.

But what do you think and is your favorite host in Comics and Co?
