My first job out of college was as an assistant inker at Marvel Comics. I was hired by the great Marie Severin, worked in the Marvel bullpen, and was eventually hand-picked by Tony DeZuniga to become his assistant. I’d go to Tony’s NYC apartment and work with him on titles like "Savage Sword of Conan," "Spider-Woman" and "Thor."
I eventually traded comic books for advertising and went on to co-create the Milk Mustache campaign, which strangely enough, eventually brought me right back to superheroes.
This Sunday at L.A. Comic Con, I’ll be onstage with legendary celebrity photographer Timothy White for “Milk Mustache: Hollywood & Superheroes.”
We’ll be showing a ton of images, some rare video—including one with Spider-Man giving pointers to Andy and Adam Kubert at their drawing boards—and telling stories about Harrison Ford, Whoopi Goldberg, Lauren Bacall, Mike Myers as Austin Powers, Conan O’Brien, The Rock and others.
We’ll also get into Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Hulk, Wolverine, the Fantastic Four, Green Lantern and the Milk Mustache Marvel collector cards.
And I’ll show a few examples of how I used to sneak my name into pages I inked. Yeah, I know. But hey, they didn’t let me sign the splash page!
So, yes, I started my career inking Marvel superheroes and somehow ended up putting milk mustaches on them.
Sunday, November 1 • 11:00–11:50 a.m. • Room 304 AB
And afterward Timothy and I will be at the got milk? booth from 12:30–2:00 for a meet-and-greet and signing of my new book, "Milk Mustache: The stars. The stories. The staches."
If you’re going to L.A. Comic Con, come by and say hello.
