Discussion 📣 r/dance is looking for 1–2 new moderators! 💃🕺

Hey dancers!

As our community continues to grow and evolve, I’d love to bring 1–2 additional people onto the moderation team who are genuinely excited about dance and want to help make r/dance an active, encouraging, and welcoming space for dancers around the world.

I’m especially looking for moderators who can be present in the community regularly — engaging with members, answering questions when you can, helping keep conversations positive, and making sure posts are being moderated fairly and efficiently.

That can include:

• Engaging with posts and helping keep the community active

• Welcoming and encouraging dancers of all backgrounds and experience levels

• Reviewing posts that may have been automatically removed or flagged

• Making sure appropriate posts don’t get stuck in the moderation queue

• Helping enforce subreddit rules and keeping spam/inappropriate content out

• Helping us think of new ways to increase participation, conversation, and overall community morale

You absolutely do NOT have to be a professional dancer to apply. I’m much more interested in finding people who care about dance, understand online communities, communicate well, and genuinely want to help make r/dance a great place to be.

If you’re interested, please send me a private message with:

  1. A little about yourself and your connection to dance

  2. Any Reddit or community moderation experience you have (if any — experience is helpful, but not necessarily required!)

  3. Why you’d like to become a moderator of r/dance

  4. How frequently you’re typically active on Reddit

I’d love to build a small team of people who are excited about bringing more energy, conversation, support, and connection into this community.

If that sounds like you, send me a message! ❤️

Let’s keep r/dance moving. 💃🏽🕺🏽

Discussion Hey Community!! 😄 I LOVE seeing people post

Hey Community!! 😄 I LOVE seeing people post videos of themselves dancing and having a good time. So I just had the thought and I would like to do a Poll on the idea:

My thought is let's have a global forum dance talent show!

How it would work: - You would submit a video of you dancing within a specified time frame to qualify. - Our dance Community here would go through each day and upvote and comment on the videos they would like to continue on to the next round. - I would then go in (maybe appoint someone to help me moderate) and would tally up all the likes and upvotes. - There would be 3-5 rounds to keep everyone engaged and having fun. Sort of like our very own dance competition TV show.

If you like this idea: Upvote and put "YES!" in the comments

If you're not into it: DownVote & put "Not Interested" in the comments section

Seems like this could be a lot of fun and get the Community we have here more active with one another.

Happy Dancing! I'm looking forward to hearing y'alls thoughts! ✨️

After a year of marriage my wife gave me my dearest wish: a professional turn table with Daft Punk’s “Discovery” on vinyl. We were both so excited we almost forgot about eating dinner. I started dancing my way over to the fridge when I noticed my wife was recording. She looked so eager to watch me dance that I had to give her a show.

For background, I have never seriously studied dance. I tended to hyper focus as a child, and one of my hyper fixations was on Michael Jackson the year he died. To this day I’m absolutely agog with “Smooth Criminal.” Then my mom signed me up for this random “One-time-only” pantomime class that was coming through town. This pantomime taught us how to do the moonwalk, and I think that was really the start of me dancing. I would pull out the moon walk at my youth activities, and eventually I learned how to freestyle with my feet (my hands took a little bit longer and that’s another story).

I put down my dancing after I became an adult. But then I found this community and thought, “maybe I can show off my dance moves and learn something.” But I was scared, and put it off for a while. Instead I just watched and looked up different dance moves. I learned I like a combination of “krump,” “wave,” and classic MJ, precisely because of how different they are.

This is my first time posting my style of dance, and I think it represents the best that I can do. I still don’t like my back posture and how I look like I’m holding back with my energy, but my wife has encouraged me.

This is just for fun, but I am curious if anyone has any criticism or suggestions, I would love to hear how I can improve. Peace and love.

Ok i didnt expect my laat post here to blow up but thanks yall. While dancing to this i realized I know how to do the stuff like I know how to be fluid I jst dont know when or where to incorporate it but I gave it a second try since yall said the last time I did it too fast and not smooth and stuff so this time I tried to do it slower witg more body control not so stiff.

I would appreciate more feedback if necessary to fix anything also i wanna start taking classes maybe? What type of dance do yall think I fit the most and what level am I beginner, intermediate?? I know im not advanced so thats out of the question.

Also keep in mind the vid from last time was filmed directly after I learned it so ofc my body was gonna be stiffer and moves faster cuz I hadn't developed muscle memory yet. This new one that im posting is 2 days after i learned it

What Is This? Which style of dance is this?

I've been listening to more rage/electroclash/edm music lately and have been wondering how to dance to it. I saw this performance fancam to a rage song which has some moves that are kind of the style I'd like to learn, but not quite sure which style of dance it is, besides it falling under the hip-hip umbrella.

Here's the clips of the movements I mentioned:

Discussion Building a dance practice app for my daughter’s first Starbound solo. What would you add?

Hey r/dance! My daughter is 10 and has competed at Starbound with her group for the past three years. Now she’s preparing for her first solo, and I started building an app to help her learn and practice her choreography at home between classes. I’ve been building around her needs, and I’d love to hear how other dancers practice.

So far, you can import a routine video, then:

  • Slow it down without changing the music’s pitch
  • Loop tricky sections and mirror the choreography
  • Bookmark moments to revisit
  • Follow automatic 1–8 beat counts with Beat Sync
  • Record yourself while the routine plays, then review your practice

What’s the most frustrating part of learning choreography from a video? What tools do you wish you had? Dancers, teachers, and fellow dance parents - what would you add to make practicing at home easier?

Pro Why Do Adults Overthink Every Movement When Learning to Dance?

Something I've noticed after teaching Latin dance for over 10 years is that many adult beginners struggle not because they can't learn the steps, but because they're thinking about too many things at once.

Am I stepping correctly?

Is my posture right?

Am I on the beat?

What should my arms be doing?

And the more they try to control everything, the stiffer their movements sometimes become.

One thing I often remind my students is that coordination develops gradually. You don't need to master every detail at the same time.

When teaching beginners, I usually focus on three things:

1. One movement at a time.
Instead of correcting everything at once, focus on one technical detail until it becomes more familiar.

2. Understand the weight transfer.
When you know which leg is supporting your body and where your weight is moving, the steps often begin to feel more natural.

3. Give yourself time to connect with the music.
Start slowly, establish the rhythm, and gradually allow your movements to become more continuous.

I've seen students become noticeably more comfortable when they stop trying to make every movement perfect and start understanding how their bodies work.

Good technique matters, but so does giving yourself permission to learn.

I'm curious about other dancers' experiences:

Do you find yourself overthinking your movements when dancing? What helped you become more relaxed and natural?

Skilled dance/theatre resume help please!!

soo this might be confusing but basically im trying to put together a resume for dance/theatre (my goal is to be a professional dancer on broadway one day). so my problem is in the dance training section. i dance at 2 different studios. one is scheduled classes several times a week, that i’ve been doing for 13 years so that parts easy- i‘ve listed the dance style with how many years i’ve done it. the other studio ONLY offers drop in classes, so while ive taken classes there in certain styles (that the original studio doesn’t offer) idk how to write how many years ive danced there since ive only done drop in classes, and it’s not like a scheduled thing weekly that i do for the whole school year like my other studio. it seems weird to only write how many years ive danced at one studio and not the other, but i think its important to write how long ive danced to show my experience, so idk what to do. i hope this made sense and someone can pls help me!!
