GEAR Goodwill Find $20 1933 Gretsch

I was dropping some stuff off at Goodwill and decided to browse the aisles as long as I was there. I came across this guitar, which was pretty amazing. Plus, it was only $20. On the headstock is stamped the number 3598. It also came with the floating microphone. The badge is really neat. I’ve never seen that before.

A friend and I did some research and it looks like it’s a 1933 Gretsch Orchestra Model 50. I had a solid arch top that was hand carved. The neck is straight, and it plays really well.

Just shows you what some people will get rid of.

DISCUSSION Bands with no original members

Whats the take on bands with no original members left? Are they then just classed as a tribute or covers band?

Eg:

Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, Little River Band, Yes, Quiet Riot etc.

PURCHASE NGD - Epiphone SG Standard 60s Vice City Pink

Post image

I’ve been looking for a pink guitar for a while and when I saw the new epiphone release I had to get one.

The lighting in the photo doesn’t do the color justice and it’s a lot more neon than that. I’m really happy with it, and it plays amazingly well, I didn’t put it down the whole day

GEAR Nitro finish? Don't store with a strap.

After a fallow period of being left in its hard case I've just realised the back of my beloved SG has lost some finish from where it was pressed against the strap.

It's incredibly minor and nearly 20 years old now so far from the end of the world but it's still a bit of a bummer. Lesson learned I guess.

GEAR Guitar Center Moving To High Pressure Sales Tactics?

I was at the local Guitar Center (CA) yesterday to sell some pedals. While in line, the guy in front of me was purchasing a Les Paul. Not sure what model as it was already in the gig bag. What I saw next was really surprising.

Salesperson: You know, those guitars get headstock breaks all the time. Do you want to buy the extended protection plan warranty? We'll fix it at no cost.

Customer: No thanks man.

Salesperson: Are you sure, you know, that headstock will break right off if the guitar gets knocked off the stand.

Customer: Thanks, but I'm good. Just want the guitar.

Salesperson: Well, what are you going to do if your kids knock the guitar over and the headstock breaks? Then what?

Customer: I'll just buy a new one.

Salesperson: If it were me I'd definitely buy the protection plan, but if you want to risk it, I guess that's your choice.

+++++++++

Is this going to be the norm now? The guy sounded like a used car salesman and honestly made it sound like these headstocks break just by looking at them!

During the whole exchange, I noticed they had an acoustic guitar on the counter top with the headstock broken off, apparently shilling for this protection plan. I was really surprised given the whole push to make shopping at Guitar Center more user friendly again!

On the flip side, in case management sees this, my sales guy Zach was super friendly and helpful, and even though they couldn't buy my Waza Air headphones back, he explained why. Positive experience all around for me. But I felt kinda bad for the guy in front of me.

EDIT: The part about this that surprised me was not the fact that they tried to sell the protection plan, but the persistence even *after* the guy said no twice. I was also bothered by the aggressiveness of the question "what are you going to do when it breaks".

OC The Pick Slip Solution: How to maintain a firm, comfortable grip without breaking your rhythm

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Every guitar player knows the frustration: you start a heavy rhythm section or a fast run, and within a few bars, the pick begins to shift, rotate, or slide away from that perfect, comfortable sweet spot. Once it loses that firm position, your attack softens and accuracy goes out the window.

Instead of pausing or using your left hand to adjust it, you can use this really cool trick in my video to auto-correct the position mid-song

DISCUSSION Is it weird that I get half bricked when I play sometimes

Let me explain: I have an Sd-1 overdrive paired with the wind-miller preamp going through my deluxe reverb. When I turn it up it just sounds so good that I get a little bricked. Is this weird? I feel like it is a little bit at the same time it’s just a natural physical response to something very pleasant

GEAR Helped my buddy move a collection today. 113 guitars.

This was his Dad’s collection. We had to catalog, price and tag everything. The family took 35 guitars home, there were 78 left over that had to be moved. It was crazy.

And for helping him out he gave me this beast: 2021 Tele Ultra Luxe!! Well worth the effort.

When your friends ask if you can help them move always say “yes.”

NEWBIE After playing for almost a year, I've now finally discovered the joy of improvising over different backing tracks.

I don't have music friends to tell this stuff to, so I'm celebrating on here. I love my guitar, and I've been pushing hard with learning theory, scales/interval sequences, songs, fretboard knowledge, along with continously bettering my dexterity...

... but now I've finally gotten into improvising, and just feeling the track and making melodies on the spot based off of what I've been learning over this past year, and goodness... it's addictive. I feel myself loosening up and relaxing, curiously trying different styles, and just enjoying the moment and making noise. It's so much fun.

QUESTION Strings for QOTSA

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello everyone,
Quick question I want to play Qotsa on my signature Dave grohl epiphone but with the current strings I have on the guitar, the strings hang too loose and it detunes too fast. Are their strings that you would recommend and is this problem just fixable with changing strings or is my guitar not made to play in that specific tuning. Thanks for answering my question and helping me out !

Guitar is a Jackson soloist. Amp is a 100w SLO clone, into my DOOM 2 412 with two dv77s and two evm 12ls.

Guitar > TC Sentry > MXR 10 band > Electric Eye Mud Killer > front of amp > FX out to Ibanez Pentatone EQ > Joyo D Seed delay > Joyo Atmosphere > FX Return

Master wasn't even halfway up and even with ear plugs in this was borderline painful lol.

I'm recording with an SM57 on one of the EVMs into a Behrenger UMC404 interface.

NEWBIE i should've never tried to remove this tape, right??

Post image
348 Upvotes

i feel like shit rn, it's got less than 24 hours with me (it's a squier sonic stratocaster hss, btw) and when i tried to get everything ready to start playing i tried to remove it... from what i could read, there shouldn't be any problem as long as i don't use the humbucker (i haven't done it yet, yesterday i tried it out at the music shop just as it came in the box and everything was great), but it seems that its purpose is precisely protecting the electrical connections, so i'm REALLY upset and concerned bc nobody told me what to do... buying another one, accepting the reality or throwing it away aren't options for me at the moment unfortunately

p.s. i'm heading back to the music shop tomorrow, they might give me the final answer although i'd rather knowing my fate beforehand

edit: i don't wanna justify myself but that part of the tape started slipping out a bit when i removed the plastic coverage, so i thought i had to do the same with it

edit 2: further context in my reply to u/addisonshinedown

many thanks for your comments, today i learned new stuff and i think everything's clear... i'm extremely busy at the moment but will try to update this post soon, with good news if possible :D

QUESTION Marshall mode four?

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi all,
I’ve stumbled upon a second hand Marshall mode four amp with a matching head, a load of pedals and a pretty nice drum kit.
I know about drums but not much about guitar, hoping you could help me out.

The seller is asking for €800, probably equivalent to $900 for the lot. I could sell my current drum kit for €550. Would I make my money back do you reckon? Have I hit the jackpot or is it best not to bother? Everything you see is included as well as a pearl decade maple (if that helps any drummers) with cymbals and hardware Thanks so much in advance

PURCHASE Thinking of getting a Gibson sj200 100th limited.

Post image
• Upvotes

I'm thinking of getting the Gibson SJ200 Limited 100th anniversary edition. Part of me is like don't do it, wait it out until black friday maybe you can get a deal. But I think only 100 of them were made. Damn... It is basically $6500. I'm guessing a used standard SJ200 can be had around high 3Ks. What a conundrum, to buy or not to buy is the question.
