I was at the local Guitar Center (CA) yesterday to sell some pedals. While in line, the guy in front of me was purchasing a Les Paul. Not sure what model as it was already in the gig bag. What I saw next was really surprising.
Salesperson: You know, those guitars get headstock breaks all the time. Do you want to buy the extended protection plan warranty? We'll fix it at no cost.
Customer: No thanks man.
Salesperson: Are you sure, you know, that headstock will break right off if the guitar gets knocked off the stand.
Customer: Thanks, but I'm good. Just want the guitar.
Salesperson: Well, what are you going to do if your kids knock the guitar over and the headstock breaks? Then what?
Customer: I'll just buy a new one.
Salesperson: If it were me I'd definitely buy the protection plan, but if you want to risk it, I guess that's your choice.

Is this going to be the norm now? The guy sounded like a used car salesman and honestly made it sound like these headstocks break just by looking at them!
During the whole exchange, I noticed they had an acoustic guitar on the counter top with the headstock broken off, apparently shilling for this protection plan. I was really surprised given the whole push to make shopping at Guitar Center more user friendly again!
On the flip side, in case management sees this, my sales guy Zach was super friendly and helpful, and even though they couldn't buy my Waza Air headphones back, he explained why. Positive experience all around for me. But I felt kinda bad for the guy in front of me.
EDIT: The part about this that surprised me was not the fact that they tried to sell the protection plan, but the persistence even *after* the guy said no twice. I was also bothered by the aggressiveness of the question "what are you going to do when it breaks".
