Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check
Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.
- Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
- Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
- If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
- You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
- It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
- You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
- You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
- Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
- They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
- Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
- It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
- Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
- We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.
If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

Question Im scared!
So my little girl Katie will be 3 in December and she has never been the lovey cuddle type shes more of the type of hedgie that u know loves u but would rather be left alone. She huff and puffs every time i pick her up the whole time shes trying to escape my hands and get back in her home. Then yesterday i noticed she wasnt eating as much and sorta lethargic and today shes not eating at all and when i got her out she just let me pick her up no fuss at all and now shes just been laying on me for like 20 mins like this even more “out of it” for lack of better terms. Im scared for many reasons but this has not been a good year for me and if i lose her im gonna lose my mind. Im looking for anyones comments im sorta freaking out

OC Obsessed
galleryI really think I won the jackpot with this little guy, ever since the day I got him he’s been so outgoing and ate like a dream. No tummy issues and no biting or mean behaviour, he’s simply the best and deserves a little appreciation. I’m so in awe of him and want to give him the best life ever :) his name is Flo
*if anybody has any tips on more enrichment for him I’d really appreciate it. He already has his wheel and lots of hides as well as some safe leaf litter. I was thinking maybe cat toys but I’m not sure if he’ll play with them. Does your hedgie play with them? Lmk!!

Warning: Upsetting Content Hedgehog Weight? (CW: ailments)
galleryHello, my boy has been losing a bit of weight (roughly 20 grams 320->302) but I am unsure if it is cause for concern. He was somewhat recently diagnosed with a jaw tumor by his exotic veterinarian and is on metacam for it. He seems to be eating mainly normally, perhaps a bit less, and is running on his wheel much more lately. I just wanted a quick shape check-in so I know whether or not I should call the vet or assume its a normal part of aging (he’s 3.5) and the tumor, or requires an extra check in.

Question Heating, trustworthy breeder?
Hi guys!
Yesterday I talked to a breeder and now I'm a little bit confused. We talked about the heating options, when they said they don't use any. They are breeding hedgehogs over 10 years now on room temperatures year around without any heat source. In the cages the normal temperature is around 22°C (71,6°F) and during winter nights, it is below 20°C, around 18-19°C (64,4-66,2°F). The breeder told me that their natural habitat has big temperature drops and bigger lows at night, which is true, but i don't really know how true is that for captive bred hedgies.
I get it that hedgies have much harder weather in the wild, but every source says that they need around 23-25°C (73-78°F) year around day and night. Plus the pet hedgies are no longer wild animals, their bloodlines are captive bred for a while now, so their needs are very different than the wild ones.
Are the breeder right? Are they okay in such low temperatures? Do I need a heating source? Do I need to find an other breeder, cause this feels very sketchy.
(ofc I will buy heating, if needed, I want to give the best possible care for my future hedgie)

Question Scheduled power outage - Keeping hedgehog warm
Hello everyone! In a week, i was alerted about a scheduled power outage going between 8AM and 4PM, a total of 8 hours. My hedgehog has three different heat sources, all running on electricity to keep him the right temperature. I’m concerned about it being below 65 for that long as my room does not get warm naturally. Is there any way to assure he doesn’t get too cold and stays a good temperature? Unfortunately i must add that i will be at work for the majority of this time. My sister will be at home though so if she needs to do anything, she will. Thank you guys ^^.

Question Clear wheel rec?
Any recommendations on a clear hedgie wheel? I was looking at the niteangel but $79 is pretty expensive. I’m not wanting to spend that much right now. In the future maybe.

Question Super paranoid about winter heating / power outages (first-time owner)
Hey guys, getting really stressed as it's starting to get colder outside!
I have a ceramic heat bulb for my little guy, but I work away from home and I'm out for like 8-9 hours every day. I keep having this nightmare of the bulb burning out while I’m at work, or the power going out and the cage getting super cold before I even notice.
What do you all use to control the heat? And do you have any way to check the temps when you’re not at home, or do you just hope for the best until you get back?
Has anyone ever had their heating fail while out? What happened?
Sorry if this sounds silly, just really anxious about hibernation attempts and want to make sure he's safe. Thanks!

Woke up to over 100 notifications from the camera. I obviously did not look at all of them, but he was mostly just on his wheel lol. I liked this one because he kept switching direction. He ran around quite a bit too, but almost every video had him on his wheel at some point
