Discussion I’m sorry but I cannot stand Chris

Let me make myself very clear before anyone gets the wrong idea:I have been a super fan of IAMX since I was 16, and I’m now 21. I think it was a hyper fixation of mine, because I researched every ounce of IAMX history, watched every video I could find on YouTube about it, I read his original blog posts, bought merch, e.c.t. I had felt like I never related to music so much. And as someone who’s been following him closely for awhile, I’ve really started to see his true colors.

I remember when he was doing livestreams—maybe three years ago—instead of discussing his new album, he would get drunk as hell and talk about himself. Even Janine was visibly uncomfortable. But that’s just it. I cannot stand how narcissistic he is. His discord is full of people worshipping him, and he eats it up. He’s also extremely creepy towards them too. I remember I subscribed to his patreon and he would make voice memos basically ear raping you. In one of them he was talking about how much smarter he is than everybody else. He’s a mess. I do not listen to any albums that came after alive in new light, because his music doesn’t even sound the same anymore. All he talks about is mental health, and now apparently he’s making people pay him for private one-on-one therapy?? I could go on and on about how shitty he is, and I wouldn’t be surprised if an allegation comes up.

I am not making this post to hate on Chris, I’m making it because most of the IAMX community needs to wake up and realize how toxic his behavior is.

Discussion Are private one-on-one mental health talks really okay?

I saw this post on Instagram the other day and I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on it?

I don't think I have enough details about what's on offer, and I'm not necessarily against non-accredited mentors/coaches in creative fields offering guidance when it comes to creative pursuits PLUS mental health, but it doesn't seem as though that's what is being offered.

It's not really clear what IS being offered. At face value, labelling it 'mental health' as opposed to something like 'self exploration' or 'creative life coaching' feels a bit off to me though. There's value in those latter things too, but I feel like it's important to have some sort of accreditation if you're offering paid one-on-one mental health sessions.

I don't know. I don't want to accuse anyone of anything. I love Chris's work. I've been a massive fan for about 12 years now. I'm absolutely a fan and supportive of Chris's endeavours. I just feel like maybe these sessions could be labelled slightly differently, if they're being labeled in the way that I understand them to be.

Thoughts?

Discussion Thoughts on the Lovestream?

Kind of what the title says. There was just a lovestream with a lot of it addressing the usage of AI. Does anyone who saw it have any particular thoughts they want to air? Would be interested in seeing everyone's thoughts as long as people don't, like, fight about it.

Discussion What is the meaning behind the lyrics of „The Great Shipreck of Life”?

Lyrics like „you can make the love and I’ll make the money”, and „I’ll be Peter pan and you’ll just be pretty” make me think of stereotypical gender expactations. But I don’t understand the rest.

Discussion What are shows like with Janine gone?

With Janine having left IAMX and Chris still touring, what have the shows been like? How is Chris handling all of the songs that would usually have Janine's vocals? And what's the vibe of like at the shows?

If I was in Chris's shoes, I think I'd have to cancel/postpone the tour because I'd be in absolute pieces. This must be tearing him up - he's very strong to keep touring after everything that's happened 😔

Janine brought so much energy to the shows, and her unique voice really added a great deal of appeal and interest to many IAMX tracks. She's truly one of a kind and irreplaceable. I truly wish her the best with whatever she has planned for her future. It's not like Chris can just hire another Janine though, and if someone did suddenly pop up with a similar on-stage chemistry and energy to Janine, I think it would be reaaalllyyy weird.

What are your thoughts? I really hope that the shows will still be fun and energetic and memorable.

Discussion New merch plagiarizes Bauhaus?

I just saw some new X merch that dropped, but I can't help but notice the similarity to Bauhaus' The Bela Session. I hoped Chris wouldn't be the type to rip other artists work knowingly, but this looks pretty plagiarized, not just inspired. I don't know if this is because of using AI or what. Your thoughts?

Discussion Has Chris ever spoken about the lyrics for The Alternative?

I know there are some songs on which Chris has given comments, interested to know if he's ever put anything on the record about this one.

I ask because I've spent 15 years taking it as a literal description of a threesome that the singer is using as a sort of escape from reality, but it was pointed out to me recently that if you juxtapose the verses and the chorus, you can take the verses as a description of the fantasy that the chorus references. Taking that perspective, the song is about the sexual fantasy of group sex on the part of the singer "spending some time alone away from real life" (wink), the verses being the fantasy and the chorus reality.

Honestly this makes the lyrics make a lot more cohesive sense, but it also slightly annoys me that I've been reading this one wrong for so long :). Or maybe it was obvious to everyone else; I'm not sure. But regardless I wonder if Chris has ever explicitly confirmed this interpretation as correct?

Discussion Have you guys been to meet&greet before?

I love their music and have been listening to them since my teenage. I thought that I really need to see the artists behind this beauty. It is amazing that they offer meet&greet!

But I am so nervous now!!! I am sure I will have no words. Have you guys done this before and how does it usually go? I haven’t been inside the fan community and not sure if you guys have your things and rituals.

I know we've yet to see an announcement, but I was curious- what are your predictions for setlist and cities? I'm going to wager that President and Denver will be dropped from the usual lineup

Discussion I don't think Chris knows what 'Trauma Bonding' is?

Post image

The context of the line here seems to follow this misconception most people have, that trauma bonding means bonding through shared trauma. The song itself seems to be about finding your place, with your people (sort of like the mantras of 'IAMX Tribe!' And 'cult of IAMX!'), which is why I think Chris thinks Trauma Bonding means bonded through trauma you've both suffered.

It doesn't. It means you've bonded with your abuser because of the trauma they've given you and cycle of abuse. Which knowing this, gives the song a completely different, Stockholm Syndrome feel to it
