Ask India Nostalgia What's something from your childhood that today's kids will never understand?

Post image

I think it's the joy of waiting for little things. Waiting a whole week for your favorite cartoon, waiting for festivals to eat your favorite sweets, or watching dadi make mithais at home.

Growing up in a joint family, being pampered by grandparents, playing with cousins, and finding random ways to entertain ourselves when we got bored.

We didn't have endless entertainment, so we made up our own games and found happiness in the simplest things.

Sometimes I feel like we had so little, yet so much to look forward to. Today I really miss those days.

What's something from your childhood you really miss?

Ps. This is a random picture I found on Google!

Cinema & Music I’m convinced the universe glitches sometimes because how did a 70yo bollywood guy accidentally pioneer rave culture

Post image

I just fell into the deepest, weirdest music rabbit hole and i can’t stop thinking about how insane this is.
so basically back in the 70s and 80s there was this legendary session musician in bombay named charanjit singh. he was the guy playing keys on massive bollywood tracks (including the synth riffs in dum maro dum).
around 1982 he goes on a trip to singapore, walks into a music shop, and buys some brand new gear: a roland 808 drum machine, a synth, and a roland tb-303. at the time, the 303 was basically considered a total flop of a product—it was just marketed as a cheap plastic box to give solo guitarists a fake bass player to practice with.
he brings it back to bombay, locks himself in a room for like two days, and decides to mess around. his logic was basically: disco is huge right now, indian classical ragas are all about endless looping and improvisation, why not smash them together?
so he sets the drum machine to a 4/4 beat, programs the 303, and starts twisting the resonance knobs. he wasn't trying to make dance music. he was literally just tweaking the knobs to see if the machine could glide between notes like a sitar or a classical singer does (meend).
he drops this record called Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat.
it comes out in 1982. India literally could not care less. classical purists thought it was trash, disco heads thought it was too bizarre, and it completely tanked. totally forgotten. bargain bin graveyard status.
fast forward TWENTY YEARS.
a dutch record collector named edo bouman is crate-digging in a dusty old shop in delhi. he spots this bizarre cover with a smiling sikh uncle sitting behind a wall of futuristic synths. he buys it for cheap, takes it home to amsterdam, drops the needle, and his jaw hits the floor.
it sounded identical to the underground acid house sound of chicago in the late 80s—the hypnotic, squelchy basslines that kicked off rave culture. except this uncle made it in 1982. FIVE WHOLE YEARS before chicago artists like phuture ever released an acid track. with zero connection to the western club scene.
the collector literally tracks singh down in bombay years later. singh didn't even own a copy of his own record anymore. he was just chilling, doing wedding gigs and playing ghazals with his wife. when the guy told him he accidentally invented acid house, singh was just like, "what is acid house? i was just trying to modernize ragas."
the album gets reissued in 2010 and blows up european club culture. suddenly, this 70-year-old uncle is flying to europe, headlining electronic music festivals, playing live 808s and 303s on stage while crowds of 20-somethings lose their minds dancing to him.
just go put on "Raga Bhairav" with headphones right now and remember this came out the same year as Thriller. the universe makes no sense man.

A fine sunday morning in 2009 going to completely chop your entire hair while sitting on this wooden plank and dad staring at you in the mirror to make me stob crying was so nostalgic. Just had my haircut and noticed this thing for kids. It reminded me of my childhood days..

Discussion Every Piece of Lost Media That Exists Only in My Mind Now

I’ve been trying to find these for years.. but i guess it’s time to accept that they’re gone forever.

  1. Khaamosh Aawazein

"Sabkuch hai par kuch bhi nahi, aisi bhi kuch baatein hai, sannatey mein goonjti, khaamosh aawazein hai"

A miniseries that aired on Doordarshan. It was about a childless couple who adopt a boy. He becomes the light of their lives but the joy is shortlived as he passes away in an accident leaving the couple alone all over again. It was shot in Goa. i found a fb post discussing the show which led me to Smita Jaykar’s(the mother) wiki. It says the show aired in 1998, so i must have watched the reruns

  1. Sea Hawks

It had quite a few big names and future stars: Om Puri, Madhavan, Anup Soni, Milind Soman etc. It was directed by Anubhav Sinha. Quite rare for a tv show to have such high production value back then According to Wikipedia, it originally aired in 1997. I used to LOVE the opening theme but I cant even remember it anymore.

  1. Bhoomi

An environmental show that aired on Doordarshan. Clips are available on yt but not the ones I want. The show had a segment in which members of a joint family were invited to this huge set and interviewed at length in front of a studio audience. Man if only i could watch ONE of those sessions again. Sigh. Aired: 2008.

  1. “No problem yaar, bann jayegi picture!”

This song. That's it! I only remember these few words. I finally found a clue last week: it was from a movie called Bollywood Calling. So i ended up watching the whole movie. AND IT WASN’T THERE. Further digging led me to an old India Today article. Apparently the song was used only in tv promos on music channels like MTV and V and wasn’t part of the OST. ig i’ll just have to remember those words and the tune to keep the song alive. No problem yaar, bann jaayegi picture!

  1. Another Doordarshan show

Two Indian soldiers(BSF) get stuck on the Pakistani side of the border. I remember the weird background score and the faces of the actors, but I’m neither a musician nor an artist. So, yeah, gone!

..............

Honorable Mentions:

These have only recently been scrubbed from the internet and i haven’t quite started aching with nostalgia for them YET but yea, I know that a few years down the road, I might start another desperate search for...:

  1. Roadies- the old seasons

Thankfully, I watched the previous seasons on voot and even hotstar. Those seasons were so different from the influencers-only show it has turned into now. Everything is so polished. Everyone seems trained. The contestants are predictable, the drama is manufactured, the controversies are rehearsed and at times, they’re laughable

  1. Bigg Boss - the old seasons

Again, Jio removed every trace of them from the internet. Can’t really expect hundreds of episodes of an Indian show to be available elsewhere either. Maybe some private trackers can help.

Kind of glad, though, that i managed to watch at least some old seasons on voot. One silver lining is that Bigg Boss hasn’t changed nearly as much as Roadies has. It’s still NASTY and I love it.

............

That’s it, then. Mention any lost media youve been looking for! And on the off chance that some of you have any of these shows help a brother out. i don’t mind paying either

Cinema & Music Engineer This Background Music

Thumbnail

If you have seen the show "Engineer This" which used to air on ZeeQ, can someone let me know where I can find the background music that was used in the show since I can't really find it anywhere so I would like some help in finding that theme song.

I would either need the original music video/file or a way to properly record it myself from within the episodes, because if I just start screen recording from the episodes with other noises and the host speaking, it would be bad in quality.

Can we somehow access the official audio files used in these shows? If yes, I'd like to know how. and if not then is there any way I can get hands on that theme?

---

The episodes are free on YouTube BTW if anyone wants to see what Im talking about.

Any help is appreciated. I really like that peaceful song that always plays in the background of the episodes.

McVities used to sell these biscuits with Doraemon toys for ₹10. I never liked the taste but used to have one daily just for the toys. They gave jigsaw puzzles, stickers, magnets, etc.

Ask India Nostalgia Looking for flash games from the mid 2000s

Checking if anyone has access to or knows about any flash games from the mid 2000s. I'm looking specifically for Indian games like the Fireworks Diwali game or the Virtual Lakshmi Poojan games which were circulating a lot in the mid 2000s. Here are example of those games from the Youtube videos posted by people.

These chocolates were really awesome. I used to buy these chocolates between 2004 and 2007, and they disappeared like they never existed.
