A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Auto Insurance Leased vehicle was a total loss, GEICO paid the full amount to leasing company for vehicle, leasing company wants my $1,000 deductible paid to them

Is this normal? I am so confused as to why the finance company would have any responsibility in collecting my GEICO deductible, especially when the amount they wanted for the vehicle was paid fully by GEICO. They have me at a $1000 charge with a line item “insurance deductible”. They’re telling me this happens with every one of their total loss vehicles, that insurance companies pass the deductible on to them.

That makes no sense to me, why wouldn’t GEICO want that money, how are they able to try and claim it. On hold with GEICO now to ask, but it’s taking forever and figured I’d ask around if this is normal.

EDIT: thanks all for the clarification, GEICO finally answered and confirmed the same thing as you all. My confusion was that my adjuster originally told me the full amount they paid to my finance company was the full agreed upon amount, hence my confusion as to why they were collecting my $1k deductible on top of that. The reality was that they paid $1k less than the agreed upon amount, just as I’ve been told is likely here.

Fired for cause, travelers insurance has questions.

I was fired for cause from an insurance agency 3 and half years ago. The gist is that my boss and I had a big fight and he fired me. Then in an effort to prevent me from filing unemployment, he submitted to the carrier that I was fired for cause “premium manipulation” he submitted 6 customer complaints that called in across a 12 months period of clients who were confused over minor billing things. I’m trying to get appointed with Travelers now and they are asking “Our information indicates you were terminated for cause in 2023. Please provide information and documentation related to that matter.”

What is the best way to explain this? Will they deny my appointment?

Adjuster promised for further review but liability decision letter date differs

• Upvotes

I had a minor parking lot scratch issue, where I requested adjuster to get the camera recordings from the other driver, the adjuster said they will review it internally and wait for the reply from the other driver but if the other driver doesn't reply or submit anything they cannot do anything and will proceed with 100% fault on me.

I said okay, but the issue is, I got the letter today and it states that my liability decision was made on the same day itself when I talked on the call with them. Did they not ask the other driver at all? Am i being wrong here? This is my first ever incident. On the second call, I asked if the driver replied and they said they did not and asked me if my claim will be more than deductible?

General Liability Insurance

• Upvotes

I’m hoping to start a small golf cart rental business next year and have been shopping around for insurance. I finally found a company to cover the carts themselves which was no small feat as most insurers are not interested in covering a rental cart.

I have not been able to find a single company who will write a policy for general liability insurance for the business. Part of the issue seems to be my business doesn’t fit into a neat box. For example, I spoke with a company today that offered a policy for a business who rents ATVs but they would not insure a business who rents golf cart. Do I even need a general liability policy? If so, where do I purchase it?

For reference, I’m in Virginia and I’ve already spoken with several independent agents.

American Modern Insurance Classifying My Single-Wide as Multi-Wide — Anyone Else?

• Upvotes

I own a 1988 manufactured home in Massachusetts. My original home measures 72 × 14 feet and has a small attached, heated sunroom and an open deck.

My signed Purchase and Sales Agreement specifically describes the original home dimensions and lists the attached room separately.

However, my homeowners insurance company, American Modern, classifies my home as multi-wide rather than single-wide.

My neighbor has a similar single-wide with an attached heated sunroom and deck, plus a carport. Her home is insured through Foremost and is classified as single-wide.

I'm concerned that American Modern's classification might be affecting my insurance premium, coverage, or eligibility for replacement-cost insurance.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

  • Has American Modern or another insurer classified your single-wide with an addition as multi-wide?
  • Were you able to get the classification corrected?
  • Did correcting it lower your premium or change your coverage?
  • Did your insurance company explain why an attached room would change the classification?

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who's dealt with this, especially in Massachusetts.

Thanks!

Health Insurance PPO or HSA?

Hello! started a new iob about a little over a month ago (vay for getting out of retail!) and on December 1st I will be eligible to pick an insurance plan. I iust turned 26 a few weeks ago and got the boot from my parent's health insurance. Needless to say, I have been trying to gain a lot more knowledge and understanding of insurance types, programs, etc. since I will be going at this on my own now. I am a healthy 26yo female with no major health issues with the exception of the flu or a stomach bug here and there. I do have to see my primary care phvsician about 2-3 times a vear in order to get mv mental health prescription refilled and then do my annual wellness visit. My medication is on the cheap side, even without insurance. The PPO plan will cost about $124/paycheck in premium (l'm on a bi-weekly pay cycle). The HSA plan premium is about $73, paycheck. Though with the HSA, I know you should contribute at LEAST about $70/paycheck additionally into the HSA itself which means I am really contributing closer to $143/ paycheck to HSA. My company does not do any contribution matching. I know there's benefits of HSA as far as long term, but I don't want to make a financial mistake here and now. I will also be getting dental and vision with them. No choices to be made there, but I realize HSA can be used there too. With all of that information, what would you suggest is the best and most cost-efficient choice for my health insurance plan?

HSA Deductible: $3,500

PPO Deductible: $3,000 and your average co-pays

Travel Trailer vs. Mobile Home Insurance

I purchased a travel trailer in 2009 and my insurance agent wrote a policy for us with Foremost. At that time, there weren’t a lot of options for insurance without an insurance broker, so I believed we were getting what was best.

Fast forward to about a year ago when I heard by word of mouth at a campground that I was overpaying for travel trailer insurance. If I was paying more because our guy sold us top of the line coverage, that would be my oversight, but I learned that our travel trailer was misclassified as a mobile home.

Reached out to our carrier who told me when we first purchased the policy, Foremost did not sell travel trailer insurance so it was written for a mobile home.

Was this an error on my agent’s part for not declining that and finding actual travel trailer insurance?

Foremost told me that they have since started covering travel trailers so they just “grandfathered me in” with this policy, but never reclassified my policy for travel trailer, but left it as a mobile home. Would t grandfathering me in mean they notify me or my agent that I am now eligible to rewrite my policy for a more appropriate travel trailer policy?

How would I have known that 1., my agent knowingly sold me a policy that was not for a travel trailer, and 2., Foremost didn’t cover travel trailers at the time but later did?

I know I will never recoup my overpayments since 2009, but do I have recourse for any premium refunds?

Hit and Run accident. Need advice.

Long story short, I have a 2026 Toyota Tacoma. I’ve had it for 6 months only. I’m currently leasing it. I have negative equity on a car I traded in so instead of the Tacoma being about 42k it’s 51k with negative equity and taxes or whatever.

Anyways about a week ago a tow truck that was towing another truck smacked my truck that was parked in my driveway way. It hit so hard it turned my truck and they drove off. Luckily my neighbor witnessed the whole thing happen since he was outside at the time and told me everything (I even have proof from neighbors ring cameras of the incident) so as I’m standing outside looking at the damages obviously I’m pissed and a black truck pulls up and a man gets out saying he’s the owner of the tow truck company and he heard what happened and he has a body shop he’ll take care of the damages within a week and it wasn’t so bad. I told him no I need your insurance and I’m going through mine. Long story short again they gave me the run around and would not provide me insurance but I have email proof of the HR lady at the tow company saying they are liable and have my insurance adjuster or body shop of my choosing send them the info so they can pay. They also said in email they will pay my insurance deductible.

Well today I got a call from the collision shop that total repairs are 20k and they sent it to my insurance and they’re waiting to see if my insurance will pay it or deem it as “totaled” I don’t have GAP insurance. (Yes I know I’m dumb) if it’s totaled I know insurance will cut Toyota a check but if there is a little more than what they send Toyota I know I’m liable for the remaining but am I completely fucked out of a new truck and covering the extra cost? Like is no one gonna cut me a check directly for me not having a damn truck no more for something that wasn’t my fault? I’m still waiting to see what my insurance says but has anyone else been in this situation?

EDIT: Tow truck company kept telling me they’re self are self-insured. And again yes I know I’m dumb for not getting GAP. But as of now my insurance company is my lawyer and they are going after the tow truck company.

Life Insurance Is Combined Life Insurance A Scam?

Not sure if this scenario is unique to just me and my mother.

My father passed away at the end of January this year. One of the companies he worked for (probably around 5-6 years) had Combined life insurance and my mother put in a claim to receive the money she was owed due to his recent passing.

Month after month, she receives a letter saying they cannot continue "without further documentation". She'll call the customer service line and provide whatever documentation B.S. they need. At the end of every call, she'll ask, "is this ALL the information needed, so that this does not get sent to me again?" And she is always told it will be all that is needed. This has been happening for 10 months now.

She got in contact with a "supervisor" and the supervisor was very kind to her and gave her a complete rundown. My mother felt secure with this supervisors advice and reassurance, only to be told she is unavailable to speak to every single time my mom receives the same letter in the mail and calls the customer service line.

Is this company a scam? Has anyone had any similar experiences with this company? His other company did not give my mother a single issue.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Auto Insurance Bundling auto with motorcycle

Good evening everyone,

I've had car insurance with USAA for about 6 years but its insanely pricey. I just bought a motorcycle and want to bundle insurance so I decided to shop around and get quotes, results have varied. So far I'm thinking about going with Geico since their quote is roughly 1/2 if not smaller than most other quotes I've gotten. Any clue why they're so cheap? Im wildly skeptical and paranoid & was hoping for some guidance on reputable insurances that bundle car and motorcycle that possibly include military discounts? Id appreciate the help. Thanks!

Should I take a commercial insurance job

I’m 23 and looking for some advice from people in the insurance industry.

I currently work at a small personal lines agency with about 5 employees. The biggest issue I’ve had is the lack of training, guidance, and structure. I’ve had to figure out a lot on my own, and I’m worried about my long-term growth here.

I recently got offered a job at a very small commercial insurance agency. There are 4 employees total, and they don’t have a physical office. The compensation is $2,000 per month plus 50% commission on new business and 25% on renewals. I’d also be responsible for doing a lot of my own prospecting.

I’m interested in commercial insurance and think it could be a great long-term career, but I’m worried I’ll end up in the same situation I’m in now, with little training or support and limited opportunities to grow.
On the other hand, I know smaller agencies can offer more responsibility and potentially more earning potential if you build a good book.

For those who have worked at small independent agencies or built a career in commercial insurance, what would you do in my position? Am I overthinking the size of the company, or are these legitimate red flags?

I’d appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have experience working at both small agencies and larger brokerages.

Home Insurance Looking for landlord insurance that can be written in my LLC’s name (Texas rental)

I have a rental property in Texas that’s owned by my LLC, and I need a landlord policy with the LLC as the named insured.

I called State Farm and they said they can’t put the policy in the LLC’s name.

Has anyone found a company that will write a policy to an LLC at a reasonable price? A carrier, an independent agent, or an online option all work. I’d appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

Edit: Collision happend in Poland

Claims Related if i have money leftover from a claim what happens?

for context my car was keyed, windshield shattered and windshield wipers bent out of place.. i went through my insurance and they gave me an estimate.. i had to pay out of pocket to get my windshield repaired and went to get an actual estimate from a shop.. the shop's estimate is lower than the amount they gave me. i have a lienholder on my car as well so the check has their name on it. they took the check and is saying they'll send a check to the repair shop once it's fixed..

if the shop says they want the money up front, am i gonna have to pay out of pocket??

what would happen to the money that's leftover??

Car Insurance Arbitration

Location: Oregon

Location of Accident: Oregon
Location of our residence: California

Hi there,

We got rear ended at a stop light in Oregon while traveling in a rental car from Enterprise.

Long story short, both our insurance (Geico) and the other party’s insurance (Progressive) paid Enterprise. Enterprise is not giving back Progressive’s money and Geico is trying to get the money from Progressive. It sounds like Progressive is also refusing some of the fees Enterprise is charging.

It is our understanding that our insurance was suppose to pay Enterprise first and then go after the other party’s insurance to get the money so I am not even sure why the other party’s insurance paid Enterprise… and then the most confusing is how Enterprise can get double paid and refuse to pay back one of the insurance company’s money.

Anyways, we got a letter from our insurance saying that they are going to arbitration. What is the likely outcome? Will we be responsible for any of the costs?

Thank you in advance!

Ghost policy?

I’ve been trying and thought I had workers comp insurance, I paid for the policy. Only to find out four days later that it was never finalized. I talked to a guy I know in insurance today and he said something about a ghost policy, not real familiar with what that is, but it sounds like it may be one of my only options. I have a roofing business that I just started last month and a client has a huge commercial metal roof job for me, and I’ve got all the liability and other insurance with the company that said I was approved on the workers comp and they don’t have that figured out yet. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was driving and someone wasn’t looking and shot out of the left hand turn only lane into the straight lane striking my car as I passed. This person has no insurance and was driving someone else’s car who they believed also did not have insurance on it. She also had her kid in the car and had a restricted license requiring her to have a blow and go In her car which she did not.

I filed with my insurance to get the ball rolling on repairs and medical.
I was evaluated at the ER and discharged with flexril and lidocaine patches. They offered imaging but I had my two kids so I couldn’t do it at that time. I was then evaluated at urgent care as the pain was still there and really uncomfortable to sit for prolonged time or bend forward. They ordered a MRI which I had done today. It showed I had a herniated disc and an annular fissure. I have a follow up appointment later today to go over the MRI results and discuss a treatment plan. Is there anything I should be sharing my insurance? How do I go about this. I’m really distraught as the discomfort is still very much there

Homeowners Insurance Claim for Fallen Tree

I think this situation is very odd. I am getting input from people IRL but I figured why not get Reddit's opinion.

We had a large pine tree come down in a wind storm. It hit the house, took out part of the deck and did some other moderate but fixable damage. We called a tree company right away because half the tree was still standing, and we had the rest removed, plus a very tall tree next to it. They also removed the portion of the tree that hit the house. This needed a large crane, a police detail, etc.

The deal we made with the tree company was that we would pay $9k for the emergency work they did that day. This was a lot, but we live in an expensive area and didn't want to mess with our kids' safety during the rest of the storm. The tree company said they would put in a claim with our insurance for the part of the tree that hit the house. We asked for an itemized bill but never received one.

Fast forward a few weeks. I know the tree company has been in touch with the insurance company. We sent the insurer some pictures of the tree work as well. The insurance company then sends us a check, JUST FOR TREE REMOVAL for $19k. This is not for the deck or house, they have issued other checks for those issues.

This seems like a huge overpay. I don't want to make our rates skyrocket for no reason. Also, the tree company has not been in touch asking for this money, though it has only been about a week since the check was received.

I was under the impression our policy did not cover removal of a tree that has not yet hit the house. I cannot fathom that just removing about 10 feet of fallen tree with a crane costs 20k.

Would you get back in touch with the insurance company and suggest they reduce the payment? Contact the tree company asking for an itemized bill again? Treat this as reimbursement for the $9k already spent? Offer the 10k to the tree company?

EDIT: Appreciate the input all. For the record, we have worked with this tree company twice before so they weren’t entirely “random” but I hear you all on letting a company make their own claim. Having a tree fall on the house may have tainted my judgment in the moment. Live and learn I guess.

Hit couch that fell from a vehicle

Last night I was driving on I-78 W in NJ, and I hit a couch which broke off my bumper. I was in the middle lane and traffic was acting completely normal ahead of me, my headlights don’t illuminate great so it wasn’t until the last second that I saw this object, and could not safely avoid it without causing an accident, so I hit it. My guess is that the car up the road ahead of me dropped it, although I’m not entirely sure. When I called the police they said they had the guy who did it off another exit, but they would not give me his insurance information, and told me to wait for the police report in 10 days. I filed a claim and am worried that Progressive will find me at fault, or that the guy doesn’t have insurance. I’m planning to take it to small claims court if I have to. (I have PA insurance)

Claims Related Diminished Value Claim Offer

My 2021 BMW M440i xDrive was backed into on the right side. The car was previously accident-free and had 36,450 miles at the time of the accident. I had a BMW certified collision center make the repairs and the costs are outlined below:

Remove/Replace RT Door Shell: $1,574
Section RT Quarter Panel: $1,634
Other Parts: $1,232
Labor: $4,484
Misc + Paint: $2,388
Total Repair Costs: $11,312

The at-fault driver’s insurance, Farmers Insurance, is using Accurate DIV to handle the diminished value claim. Accurate DIV made me the offer below:

Repair Severity Score: 3.5/10
Pre-Loss Actual Cash Value: $45,025
Actual Post-Loss Value: $43,878
Diminished Value Offer: $1,147

Would you accept this offer or get a 3rd party diminished value appraisal? I am in the Indianapolis area and I’m seeing dealer listings below $40k for similar cars without any accidents reported.

Auto Insurance Procrastinated on filing police report and claim following catalytic converter theft. Will I run into trouble?

I own two cars, and this is for the car that I rarely drive and was in fact planning on selling. When I discovered something was wrong with my car end of September, by that point I haven't driven that in a month. I made an appointment with a mobile mechanic a week after my discovery (yes i know i procrastinated here), and the mechanic arrived at my house last week and told me the cat theft is the cause of the noise. And only now did I file a report to police and auto insurance. This is the first time I've dealt with police and insurance so I'm kinda nervous here.
