Health Insurance yearly check up

Hi guys I have my yearly check up/exam tomorrow. Since I’ve been diagnosed with Keratoconus last year. I honestly forgot the process but the eye exam is covered with our yearly eye exam correct? I forgot if I got charged or not. I don’t think I was? But I’m not sure. If anybody can shine some info/light it would be greatly appreciated.

Contact Lens Impression based lenses - will they really solve my problems?

TLDR: I am looking for everyone’s experiences with impression based scleral lenses. Specifically, did they make any significant difference in fogging and comfort?

I am 3 years post crosslinking and have been struggling with contacts the ENTIRE 3 years. I’ve seen 3 doctors at 2 different practices, and worn literally countless pairs of lenses. I’ve tried hybrid and scleral lenses.

My biggest issue has been fogging. There are times that I can’t go more than a couple hours without needing to take out my lenses to refresh them.

I am now working with a provider that specializes in contact lenses for complex eye conditions like kerataconus. She seems genuinely motivated to help me but nothing is working. It seems like the closer the fit is (less leaking), the more my eyes feel sore by the end of the day. The blood vessels are pronounced and my eyes just feel suffocated. At this point my doctor has suggested that we try impression based lenses. She’s offered me a discount, but this is not covered by insurance and still very expensive.

The constant refreshing is so disruptive to my life. This journey has also been so expensive considering the costs of lens co-pay, surgery and follow up, office visits, limited PTO, products….

I have read and reread this whole subreddit, talked at length with my doctor, and tried all the things I could have tried for these issues. I’ve tried celluvisc and allergy drops with no results. However right now I use Purilens, refresh plus preservative free eye drops, Boston simplus overnight, and progent periodically when the build up begins to “stain” my lenses.

I am feeling very defeated. I’m at the point where I feel like I might as well accept that I will always have fogging. Should I really try the impressions? Is this a cost I’ll have to consider yearly?

Any input is appreciated.

Crosslinking Epi-On Anxiety and Advice

I have epi-on crosslinking for my keratoconus scheduled for the end of this week on one eye (my good eye unfortunately). This has been an awful process already with about 8 months of insurance back and forth and rescheduling the procedure 3 times. It’s finally approved and it’s happening this week and i’ve gone from “I can wait to get this over with” to “oh i’m really scared” very suddenly. I’m mostly nervous about the recovery (obviously) but when I would be able to put a lens back on… I wear sclerals and I’ve read a million different timelines in terms of when I can get them back on / get them refitted. I can somewhat function with a scleral in my bad eye only but it’s still pretty bad. Feeling really anxious that I won’t be able to go about life as usual for months and months while so wait for the vision to settle. Does anyone have experience/insight into this and the procedure itself they can share with me?

General Feels more sleepy when wearing RGP lenses

I've been diagnosed with Keratoconus since I was 19 (back in 2019) and have started wearing RGP lenses. I am currently 27 so it has been 7 years.

I experienced getting more tired or sleepy when wearing the lenses the first time I got it. Sometimes I get headaches. I even felt itchy so most of the time I only went to sleep whenever I experienced those. I was unemployed that time so I had more time to spare.

In between those years, I experienced those but sleep is always a foolproof solution.

The past few days, my job has been hectic due to my increased workloads. Hence, I often sacrifice my sleep to get things done. I noticed that I am experiencing the symptoms I initially had when I first got my lenses. Tired, sleepy, and having headaches.

So when the weekend comes, I try my best to get longer hours of sleep Around 10 hours of sleep I would say. But whenever I have work, most of time I only get 5 to 6 hours of sleep. Not that sleep deprived yet I still feel sleepy. However, it doesn't help that much anymore. I still feel tired.

Whenever I take off my lenses, I don't feel that much tiredness or sleepiness anymore unlike when I'm wearing my lenses.

I had my crosslinking with my right eye back in 2023. After that, I haven't consulted with my ophthalmologist if I still need to change my lenses. To be honest, it's due to financial constraints.

Sometimes I think that maybe it might be because of stress why I am experiencing those symptoms. Or maybe it could be my lenses no longer fit me due to size decrease of the cone. Or maybe I am wearing my lenses for much longer hours.

To be honest, it's affecting my daily life big time. I do not know anyone who has same condition as me. I hope anyone could share their experiences if they have the same situation as me. I am already planning to visit my ophthalmologist once again but in the mean time, I hope I could get some opinions that will help me while waiting for my appointment.

Thank you!

Need Advice Positive stories about living with KC?

Anyone have any positive stories about living and functioning with this condition? I used to not even think about it until my left eyes prescription got worse and I’ve been panicking since.

Id love to hear some positive stories on how everyone is doing mostly for my mental health and I’m sure others would love to see it as well.

If you have a moment please drop your story and let us all know we can be “normal”!

I'm looking for an alternative in Australia.

Need Advice Army sclerar lens

Has anyone with keratoconus been accepted into the military and served while wearing scleral lenses, especially after CXL treatment?

I'm interested in real experiences with medical waivers, military medical examinations, and whether scleral lenses are allowed during training and active service.

Any personal experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Need Advice Scleral lenses, mild redness, and a slight scratching sensation iis this normal or could it be an infection?.

Hi everyone,

I have keratoconus and wear scleral lenses. Lately, I've been feeling a slight scratching sensation when inserting them. Yesterday, I made a mistake and wore them right away within the first 10 minutes of waking up, without giving my eyes proper time to rest. I also haven't been using lubricating drops consistently.

In the morning, both eyes were red, but then one improved/cleared up while the other stayed somewhat red (attached are recent pictures).

I already have an official appointment with my eye doctor this coming Tuesday, and I'm keeping the lenses out until then to let my eyes rest and heal.

Has anyone experienced something similar with scleral lenses?

Crosslinking New corneal ectasia hypothesis. Thoughts?

Post image

Keratocytes preferentially tension anterior fibrils against creep, normally providing structural homeostasis, so excessively cut fibrils (PRK, LASIK) or failed tensioning (keratoconus) shift load posteriorly and cause ectasia.

Crosslinking Had CXL on my left eye and…

Hello i wanma share my CXL experience. Got it performed on my left eye on Oct 14, 2026. It’s still blurry and hazy. For some reason it got blurrier after my ophthalmologist removed the bandage contact lens. Will these improve within the suggested date of my ophthalmologist? (Around 1-3 months she said) Yeah and don’t get fooled that it’s painless because after the surgery you’ll have a week of hell because of itching.

Here’s My experience:

Surgery Pain - 1/10 (If you researched it like I did you’ll kind of get nervous and you’ll be too aware that they’ll remove the epithelium. That part made my heart beat faster and I kinda knew all what was happening that’s why the ophthalmologist and the assistants calmed me down because i was going crazy.

Post Surgery Pain - 999/10 I experienced the worst light sensitivity my eyes ever experienced. It was so bad we needed to buy sunglasses after the CXL because i can’t see anything or even open my eyes. After that the pain introduced itself and my eyes just teared up all day and i think i was basically crying from the pain for a whole day like a child, no shame though as it’s really painful. I think i spent my whole day eyes closed listening to music and just laying on the bed after that.

Don’t be intimidated about that pain i described though it’ll fade slowly after 24 hours. the prescribed antibiotics & artificial tears will help like my ophthalmologist told me. Day 1 for sure is the worst followed by nonstop itching and sensitivity. 🤣🤣

And oh my right eye wasn’t even touched because the ophthalmologist said it’s too thin for CXL and we’ll wait for further examinations to decide what to do with it. Overall decent but reassuring experience as it can stop my progression and i hope i won’t need a 2nd CXL like other patients do! Sorry if i have typos 😅

Contact Lens Redness and ring around the edge of the scleral

Hi! I am new to the world of sclerals and just received my first pair during the fitting process. This is my second day wearing them for around 10 hours, and I noticed that my eyes were severely irritated, with small veins all around the contour of the lens. Adjustments are being made, and my new pair has been ordered. I will have my next appointment in 3 weeks once they arrive. Has anyone experienced this? I am also terrified that an ill-fitting scleral lens could jeopardize the effectiveness of my cross linking (intrusive thoughts). Excited to hear about your experiences!
