To me it seems like most of Canada problems are rooted in taxes and zoning. Some say that’s muni jurisdiction but the federal level can do a lot to encourage smart taxes and zoning for Canada’s economic benefit.

Policy What do you think about the Airsoft Industry selling replica handguns to people without PALs?

Thumbnail

I’ve always found this strange. Anyone can buy a replica handgun that looks almost exactly like a handgun, such as the Glock 17 (ie the Glock 17 Gen 3 Blowback BB gun), regardless of them being mentally ill, having a criminal record, etc.

And even though it isn’t a real gun it looks pretty much exactly like one (but admittedly it will NOT sound like a real gun when fired).

Could easily be used for robberies, sexual assaults, extortion, witness intimidation, kidnapping, etc I would think.

What’s your opinion? Do you guys think this is a loophole or that most people are aware and don’t care?

Policy Hill Times: Where should Canada turn, in turning away from Trump?

Thumbnail

Canadians owe Donald Trump a debt of gratitude, for stripping us of our delusion that diversifying our international trade relationships is a chore that can wait for another day.

But I worry that too many members of Canada’s political class are rushing towards the wide gate and the broad road, to strike easy trade deals with authoritarian states that covet our resources, even as they scorn our ideals.

I made the case for a better path forward, in the Hill Times.

Policy The Path to LPC Victory

A dark horse candidate runs on a clearly different platform, both in rhetoric and policy.

A candidate needs to recognize that there is a significant negative externality created when land values go up super high. It's harming our economy and making things really unfair for young people. If you can't afford to rent in the area where you work, you have to travel or not take the job. These are costs to society and especially to young people and newcomers. Historically, governments have favored homeownership with taxes and stuff, which is bad. We should not have done that.

I know you are all scared to rock the boat, but young people are getting absolutely fucked. Something significant needs to be done to balance out the playing field. Land values are too high relative to incomes.

We could cut off $5k from each person's income taxes, and use a pigouvian tax, a land value tax, to raise the revenue instead. The federal govt already has an empty home tax, they can do this. Yes I know property taxes are municipal. This would actually help young people, unlike everything politicians will do for the next decade. The tax would not have to be very large to give people a significant payout. Grandma can defer or easily afford it. Her house went from $50k to $4 million. She can pay 1% and still be gaining in equity.

Policy When will things feel easier (financially)?

Hello! Will cost of living feel any easier after the Liberal victory, and if so when will I feel it? Tax cut is coming soon... What else?

I live paycheque to paycheque, so incentives to buy stuff or invest don't really help me. (I use low income transit and the carbon tax was helpful.)

Policy 2026 Liberal National Convention | Liberal Party of Canada - Thoughts?

The LPC has just finished their National Convention: What are your thoughts?

Often in Canada we focus massively on federal level politics.

In reality the powerhouse is provincial level politics for extremely important areas like Housing Policy, Labour Policy, Energy Policy, and so on.

We need much more spotlight and pressure at these areas to help the working class and most vulnerable with this horrific affordability of life crisis/quality of life crisis.

Steven Guilbeault was very honest in explaining that the Federal LPC is governing from a centre-right position. Carney is your classic Blue Liberal/Red Tory - Progressive Conservative type.

*Some may find that positive - Some may find that negative - That is politics*

As an individual what I am hoping for is a way to move the Labour Movement forward in Canada. The stronger Unions, Provincial Federation of Labours, Labour Councils, and so on are the more rights, benefits, protections workers have.

I also want us to find a way to combat the misinformation and corruption of governments like Danielle Smith/UCP. We know they have massively held back Renewable Energy in Alberta which is not just cleaner but cheaper. This only hurts us as a nation. We don't need the insanity of Fossil Fuel propaganda and corruption like we have seen with Trump/His Cronies.

I'm not sure how the Federal level of politics could massively help on the Labour Movement front but I know it is needed.

When it comes to Renewable Energy/Green Technology though the Federal LPC can continue to push on the High-Speed Rail project and also on the East to West Electrical Grid based on Renewable Energy and Union Labour.

Shamelesselle on IG put together a simple breakdown of the key issues in this election. I thought I could post 1 per day to discuss as it's just a high-level summary of points. If there's no value I won't post more but I thought it would be a good way to discuss the key issues. I thought of posting this in the Canada politics subreddit but it doesn't allow images.

Policy Who are you considering supporting?

I’m leaning towards Freeland as I’ve met her several times and she knows who I am as a volunteer (probably some staff member whispering my name in her ear but oh well) and she’s also like a neighbouring MP for me. I would also like to have a woman PM in my lifetime and she’s not going to be a woman PM for the sake of being a woman PM. She actually has the acumen and resume to back it up. But the only real issue I have with Freeland is that it feels like a Kathleen Wynne/ Dalton Mcgunity effect.

She was there for every decision made and supported it. I really really don’t like her ditching the carbon tax as it feels like she’s bowing into populist pressure. But from what I read, all the benefits of the money going back to people gets wiped out by current economic factors.

Carney, I don’t know what to quite think about. I like the cut of his gib and he could seriously give a shot of forming government or at least set PP to a minority government. But he’s not an elected politician. I would rather have someone elected if they become leader. Anyway, who are you guys seriously considering. I’m leaning Freeland but I’m open to other possibilities.

Policy Let's not have an Afghanistan 2.0

If I am remembering correctly Canada's involvement in Afghanistan cost us BILLIONS.

We lost over a hundred of our citizens.

We had thousands injured.

Thank goodness we didn't get even more involved than we did with Iraq..

We need to stay as fucking far away as possible from the U.S. shitstorm with other countries.

Trump is going to most likely move to Cuba next and then who knows where after that.

We need to stay out of all their nightmare creation. Period.

Holy shit. She’s like giving the best performance at the debate. I can’t believe I slept on her for so long. I was extremely pleased with her mentioning UBI as I very much support that policy. She also strikes me as very PM like and if we were going to have a woman PM, she would it. I’m still supporting Carney as my number one, but she’s definitely my number two.

Policy Domestic policy?

Any bets on when we will start hearing about something to support people through the obvious recession in middle class jobs?

I supported Carney's leadership bid and voted strategically, defecting from the NDP to do so.

Asking as a 19th century millwright whose sawmill closed and turned the town into a ghost town after my robber baron boss read about steam engines for boats in the newspaper. Oops wrong time period, I mean a software developer forced out of the US-run industry to pay for share buybacks and data centres.

A lot of these big nation building projects are going to take a long time to generate jobs. Can we have something for solo entrepreneurs, or else some kind of reskilling stipend?
