Discussion First Trail Day on Full Suspension Bike

Wanted to just share my experience with my first full suspension trail experience!

I just took delivery of my stumpjumper 15 evo comp alloy and took it out on the trails a few hours ago. I’m in Austin so I go to the Walnut Creek trails and I took it down a trail called “Severe Consequences” which is a hard blue/ easy black trail. The bike handled the trail with ease whereas taking it on my rockhopper previously I felt like I was going to die. I had so much confidence on the downhill sections and felt that the bike actually climbed surprisingly well and sometimes felt even better going up hill than my hardtail did given that it didn’t lose traction in the rear. It is also my first bike with tubeless tires which make the bike grip noticeably so much better. The FOX Genie rear shock truly is amazing. Absolutely satisfied with the purchase and would highly recommend the bike.

Discussion Sorry, and update

• Upvotes

Hey, so i made a post about being overweight having small ass legs and a long torso and being 5 11 (labeled Overweight?), i got embarassed and deleted it but their was a ton of useful information from everyone and i just want everyone to know I really appreciated it, I bought a Marin Bolinas Ridge 2 (Large & 29Inches) and Its been awesome. Since i hadn't ridden in so long even after 10 minutes i was sweating like crazy, my heart was racing and i couldnt breath, but after a week ive made so much progress and its fun af, and all I have to say is anyone who rides bikes (commutes, sport, professional) legit deserves so much more praise as it does take a lot of skill and endurance. Thx everyone😅

Discussion how to avoid buying 1litre of Fox 4wt when of the Fox 34 rrhytm requires only 40cc?

This is so wasteful. A litre is $32 I need 40cc. This is the only Fox fork I own. I want to do my own lower service but Fox doesn't sell the oil in any less volume?

Discussion Electric mini pumps: Silca vs. Topeak vs. HiLine vs others

Hi, I’m looking for an electric mini pump for my Stumpjumper 15 to bring on trails, but also to use as a pump to top off tires at the car. Eventually, I might use this for a gravel bike as well. A few options caught my eye:

  • Silca Elettrico Ultimate
  • Topeak E-Booster Digital
  • HiLine E-Pump Boost

For anyone who’s used these, how are the battery life, inflation speed, and reliability with MTB tires?  The HiLine in particular claims it can seat a tubeless tire bead on the trail. Has anyone tried this?

Would you get one pump to cover both trail and car use, or go with a lighter option like the Muc-Off AirMach Pro for the trail and a cheaper, larger electric pump to keep in the car? Open to other options people have used and recommend as well. Thanks.

Discussion Whistler this summer, recommendations

For my birthday next year I'm wanting to do some destination riding for 3-4 days and have settled on Whistler as the place to visit. I am an intermediate to advanced rider and mostly do xc style riding. I'm going with my wife but would be riding solo for the trip. A few questions

  1. When is the best time of year to go? I have read August but interested in potential other dates.

  2. Any recommendations for guides/tour companies? I have seen Arbutusroutes that offers full day tours of Squamish, Pemberton, and Lord of the squirrels. Are there other companies that do similar or are better?

  3. Is a guide/tour necessary? I have never been to the area and would prefer to not be in unfamiliar terrain or trails by myself

  4. Flying with bike or get a rental? Is it worth the hassle to pack and fly with your bike?

Also open to any other tips or tricks for anyone who has done a similar vacation.

Thanks!

Discussion Advice request from the hive mind.

I’m going on a big MTB weekend this Friday. It’ll be 4hrs ish if riding each day. Maybe 6 on the Sunday.
I haven’t ridden in a couple of months, my bike is currently with the mechanic and I’m hopefully getting it back on Thursday.
Would a cycle on the Thursday night help or hinder me on Friday?

Suspension Rockshox Zeb Stop Sale

Anyone heard much about the fact there’s about to be a Zeb recall? They have stopped selling them while they figure out the serial numbers affected.
Full air spring purge on top out. Sounds great.
Fingers X my fork isn’t involved!

Suspension 200 hour service DIY or Upgrade - RockShox 35 Gold RL?

2023 Norco Torrent HT. I bought used and ride the bike twice a week on local blue/easy black trails for last 5 months in BC. Previous owner said they used it for a season. Haven't done any fork servicing, which probably means I have to do a 200 hour service? Is it worth learning how to do and do myself, or upgrade for a different fork. 150mm fork if anything on sale? I love this hobby and see myself progressing from intermediate. I know there are videos and I need kit and tools. I did brakes bleeding myself for first time recently and it took me half a day. I also plan to take the same bike on long distance bikepacking trips soon.

Wheels and Tires Recommend me some tyres please?

27.5 x 2.35 front, previously e thirteen trsr

27.5 x 2.35 rear, previously schwabe hans damf

The bike is a 2017 yt jeffsy trail/endure

I ride on the road 50% of the time so ideally something harder wearing and (less rolling resistance on the rear only)

45% trails and 5% park

Ideally I'd like something nobbly and aggressive for the front so no risk of wash out when off road, gravel mud etc

Then a faster tyre for the rear that is still off road capable, not going to slip peddling up hill on gravel/loamy soil.

Wheels and Tires Looking for a loud freewheel for a kids bike

I know it sounds silly but I think he would really like it. I have never had a loud freewheel but thought they were cool. What hub/ wheel should I look for? For reference the bike is a norco charger 24.

Discussion Moving on from One Up clipless pedals

As the title states, I want to try a different clipless pedal. I have been on the One Ups for about two years, but I don't like how much play they have. I've heard the Wolf Tooth Shift pedals are pretty stable. Does anyone have experience with them?

Discussion Epic 9 Fit VS Epic 7

Recently moved up from the Epic 7 Evo to Epic 9.

Rode an XL on the Evo and always felt very comfortable, had no discomfort after or during rides so I bought the XL Epic 9. I’m 6’2 and wear a 34 inch length pant.

So far after about 7 rides on Epic 9 I’m finding I end up with wrist pain, lots of pressure in my palms and a little forearm soreness.

I can’t quite figure out what the issue is.

Is the geometry that much different that my fit should be different? The saddle height and all the seems good, but the cockpit area seems uncomfortable. I don’t feel as confident descending on Epic 9 as I did on the Evo, but I feel amazing climbing on it and it’s superior at climbing.

Discussion CE2 Body Armour

• Upvotes

Picked up my new to me DH bike on the weekend, already loving it and already getting into way sketchier sections than before.

Thinking it might be time to upgrade my armour to CE2, strongly prefer jacket style. 110-115kg and 183cm. Needs to be somewhat breathable but that's not the priority. Rib/kidney protection would be nice but not critical. Shoulder protection is.

Looking at Leatt 3DF Airfit Evo vs POC Oseus VPD vs TLD Stage Ghost. I like the Alpinestars but can't get it easily in Australia.

Thoughts on the above? Current armour is Leatt, it's comfortable enough but I have POC helmets and now the TLD has grabbed my interest, it's also marginally cheaper.

WhichBike Anyone ride an Intense Spider??

I currently ride a 2023 Santa Cruz Mega Tower and am looking for a downcountry style bike that's lighter and more playful for Long epic days. Does anybody have experience with the new intense spider? Would you recommend it? The one I'm looking at is $3600 with carbon wheels/shwalbe radial tyres but its 33 pds so it's heavy but I hear good things about how playful it is, plus it's an absolute sick looking ride. Have been looking at Spur, yt izzo or Revel Rascal/Ranger but can't find good deals anywhere.

Discussion RideBHM - Any locals, or that at least frequent the park?

So I made the trek with my son, first bike park today. I’ll say that after the visit, I’ve noticed something that I haven’t before. Not only YouTube vids, but even posts here, there’s very little if anything recent.

If anyone is local or at least visits on a regular basis, is the current state of the park normal?

It seems like a fantastic place…that has been left to rot. Every kids and green trail at the park is closed except one, and that one doesn’t exist as far as I can tell. And by closed I don’t mean there’s a tree across or other damage, I mean it’s just grown completely over and doesn’t really exist anymore. The vids from the past (a couple to 3 years ago) are a far cry from what we saw today.

Don’t get me wrong, I fully expected not to be able to get the most out of park, I’m a beginner and I had a 7 year old with me. And I’m sure the advanced stuff is prioritized which makes sense. I was just shocked at the state of the trails. Just wondering (hoping) it’s just a normal cycle and I hit it at the wrong time.

Brakes Shimano XT 2 piston/4 piston question

pretty sure I know the answer but want some confirmation

the shimano xt 8200 brake lever can push either the 8200 2 piston caliper OR the 8220 4 piston caliper, correct? No such 8220 lever exists as far as I can tell.

He is coming from a commencal ramones 16 that he loves but is getting small. I was also looking at the ramones 20, trek wahoo 20 or the Scott roxter 200 as well but this person is selling the riprock for 375 USD

WhichBike Moving from fully rigid to hardtail...

Hey! I'm curious to get some internet advice. In short, I've been riding a rigid bike around for the past couple years. It's a crust evasion. Done touring, bikepacking, months and weeks at a time. Including baja divide, some great divide mountain bike, some gnarlyish stuff. I live in Mexico. I've had it setup 27.5 x 2.8 and recently been into the 29 x 2.2. Never had my own bike with suspension.

Recently I've been thinking about getting a hardtail...curious to get peoples advice.

My main impetus is that there is a 'road' up a volcano near where I live. The last 5 miles gain like 3k feet of vert from 11k feet above sea level to 14k. Really wanna consistently ride it. The thing is it's a combo of paved and smoothish gravel from 4k (where I live) to 11k.

It's the first time I've been unable to bike up or down a road because of a lack of suspension. Even with my 2,8 inch tires at the lowest possible pressure the road is made out of volcanic, rounded off rocks. It's like riding through a mogul area where the tops of basketballs are sticking out of the ground. The bouncing was just ridiculous and almost impossible to pedal.

My question is would a hardtail fix this? Or not really...Half the problem is my back wheel bobbing all over the place and I can't really pedal.

Saw a specialized chisel in my area for sale with an ok price. Also I was looking at some other weird bikes like the ari shafer that has a 60mm travel fork, also there is a new trek 'gravel' bike that is full suspension. They seem cool cuz they are efficient for the nice stuff but can maybe handle the rough a bit more than what I have at the moment.

I never drive with my bike, I only ride from my front door.

EDIT: Here's a foto from google street view. It looks deceivingly easy - even in person.
