Hoops Discussion Early thoughts on Mavs
Risacher and Larry are diamonds in the rough.
Could be that Hawks was disappointed or was tired of his development but damn, Risacher is an NBA player. He has strong motor, athletic and an energizer bunny. I see DFS in him with a better shot creation and handling. And I think him coming from the bench is the best scenario as he doesn't have to immediately go against star and starter players, he definitely has an advantage against opposing team's bench.
Larry, is one game worth the hype? I think so, his outside shooting is real. His passing too is, he definitely is not what Luka was in his rookie year. But he doesn't have to, he just has to be his own kind of player. But you can definitely see there's something as he is able to create some of his shots, be a catch and shoot on 3s. His biggest flaw now would be turnover, ball handling and strength. And I think he excels when there's another ballhandler with him in the floor
Sasser, I wasn't really high on him as we did not see him during preseason but I think he is a good off the bench PG. He is a streaky shooter that handles the ball.
Max, we are still waiting for the bump in his game. Apart from reboubding I haven't seen a change in his game still. Hope he lives to the potential Dusty mentioned he'd seen on him.
Excited to see DLive and Santi. I'm also curious to see how Biberovic would be like on the floor.

Misc. Discussion More excited about Flagg than I ever was for the previous guy.
I am more engaged for this version of the Mavs and this player (Coop) than I ever was for the previous iteration. This guy is more special than this thread gives him credit for, and I can't for the life of me understand the constant sentimentality in this sub when you got a guy like that on your books. There are GMs in this league who would sell their ass for a chance at Flagg, yet here he is taken for granted, not appreciated, because he's not Luka. Get over yourselves or go join the Lakeshow. Either way, we are moving on with 32 bby! Special performance coming tonight.

Trade I miss how old mavs/nba fan me used to feel…
I know this isn’t productive or healthy to linger on, but it’s not the same for me anymore and I miss the fan I used to be. It’s been 631 days since that Luka trade and I’m fucking broken as a mavs/nba fan man. I thought it would be getting better with time but I think this is just the way it is for me now. This used to be my pride and joy week in and week out. Even the years when we were ass in those god awful 2016-2018 years, I was so bought into this program.
I remember being an 11 year old kid running out into the street and screaming when we won with dirk. I watched nearly every game and even if I couldn’t I’d follow stats, watch extended highlights, listen to podcasts, everything about it. I loved it so much man. I used to date a girl into my early college years and while I couldn’t afford much, I’d get us nose bleed tickets, doncic jerseys, and scream from the rafters even though my eyesight was kinda shit and would just watch the jumbo screen half the time so I could see the actual play. I was so excited to see how we grew each year even if we were bums that year.
But that trade gutted me man. It genuinely feels like a traumatic event occurred and has made me so apathetic and desensitized to literally anything that happens in the league now. Pre Luka trade sports fan me died with that move and I feel like this shelled out version of the fan I used to be. I know it’s toxic as hell for me to be thinking like this because look we got coop and he is so solid but I just can’t buy in like I used to. And it’s not even like “well if you like Luka so much then follow him to the Lakers.” I TRIED AND I CANT. I’ve realized it’s not even about Luka being the one leaving at the end of the day, it’s the fact that I trusted this org with my devotion and fanship and they betrayed and sold it for a bag of chips. Fuck Nico and his whole bloodline and everyone else involved in this decision for what they took from me.
Sincerely, emotionally damaged Dallas mavs fan.

Hoops Discussion Naji Marshall didn’t play the entire second half last night. Do we know why?
Exactly what the title says. We played the spurs close last night, ultimately losing. Seemed like Naji Marshall was playing well, but I don’t think I saw him at all in the second half. Does anyone know why?

News [Clark] Dusty May explains Mavericks’ decision to rest Kyrie Irving in team’s home opener
DALLAS — Less than two hours before the Dallas Mavericks’ home opener, coach Dusty May delivered some bad news: Kyrie Irving wasn’t going to play.
Irving was officially ruled out with what the Mavericks called left knee injury management.
That development, though not terribly surprising, was still a disappointment for fans who purchased tickets to the team’s Saturday night game against the San Antonio Spurs hoping to watch Irving play at American Airlines Center for the first time in more than a year and a half.
Without Irving and his co-star Cooper Flagg, who suffered a left shoulder strain Friday, the Mavericks put up an admirable fight against the Spurs but were overwhelmed by the defending Western Conference champions in the fourth quarter in a 122-106 loss that dropped Dallas to 1-2.
Tommy Lo was one of the 19,555 fans in attendance. Lo, 28, caught a 14-hour flight from Taiwan earlier in the week, specifically so he could watch Irving play. Lo held up a sign afterward lamenting that his trek to Texas hadn’t turned out the way he wanted it to.
“Flew 10,000 mi(les) from Taiwan just for Kyrie,” it read.
“Sad, sad, sad,” Lo said through a friend who was interpreting for him. “But Wemby (Victor Wembanyama) shows up. So that’s a payoff.”

Excluding the preseason, Irving hadn’t suited up in a Mavericks home game since March 3, 2025. That was the night Irving suffered a torn left ACL.

Hoops Discussion A Question About The Rules
Hi. I am new to watching basketball (in Australia) and thankfully I watched alot of Dirk and he became my favourite player, so I decided to follow the Mavs last year, so I just have a question about the rules.
Just before Risacher blocked Wembenyama (insane), Clayton Jr. was pushed by Wembenyama whilst he was in the air, no?
Doesn't that warrant a flagrant foul?
I just would like to better understand these foul rules better, so thank you for the understanding and your answers!

Hoops Discussion Naji Marshall
I wasn’t able to watch the game, saw Naji was doing great the first quarter/half but then he didn’t do anything offensively the rest of the game.
What happened? He get doubled? Hurt?

Hoops Discussion I’m really happy about today’s game
I’ve never been more happy about a loss before. The fact that we were neck and neck practically the entire game with last seasons WCF champs is insane WITHOUT coop and Kyrie. Pure insanity and gave me way more optimism for this team. I genuinely believe by next season we can be strong contenders. I think dusty is doing great and will only get stronger and better as this season goes. Larry is insane and the guys holding their own against the spurs like that is just incredible.

Hoops Discussion I think I’m ready. Can someone get me up to speed?
TL;DR: haven’t paid attention since the trade but I think I’m ready to come back. Can I get a quick update on the team? Do we suck? Will we suck in three years? Am I going to get my heart broken again?
I took a full year off, outside of a few hateful comments in this subreddit. I didn't watch a game or read a game thread, and for the first time since I was six years old, I thought about possibly questioning my MFFL status. I, like many, grew up in the magical Dirk era. I have no connection to Dallas in the slightest, but playing NBA Live 2006 as a bright eyed child with Toronto Vince on the front cover, I fell in love with this magical seven footer with a funny last name who could not miss from anywhere on the court.
That love from a simple video game developed into a full on, diehard obsession with the Mavericks. In 2011, I stayed up past my bedtime, sitting two inches away from the TV with the volume set to two, silently screaming and pumping my hands in the air, trying not to alert my parents, who definitely didn't know what I was doing. Every year after that, I never waned. I loved every second, even if our front office was terrible at getting him talent in the latter years. I didn't care. We had our ring, our hero, and a franchise where that meant something. We didn't have the jewelry to show for it, but we were respected as an org because we had class and loyalty. I think that meant more to me than I realized.
I didn't want to let Dirk say goodbye. I now wish he hadn't played those last few years so he could have a better life now. It encompasses his love for the fans, giving way more than we deserved, always. Somehow the basketball gods shone on us and gave us the chosen one, the promised successor of the king. On draft night, I was elated when we selected him. I had no idea he would become what he is. I thought that somehow at least one more championship, an MVP, and a long career spent only in Dallas had been gifted to us on a golden, diamond encrusted platter. Much older now, I thought how cool it was that I had Dirk growing up, and now I thought I'd be able to do it all over again, share it with a wife, share that experience with my future kids, and really get to savor it in a way I didn't fully grasp in Dirk's prime.
The early years of Luka's career were some of the hardest I had ever faced. I was struggling in university and really didn't know what I wanted out of life. I had some really dark months and went through some serious depression seasons. One thing I always looked forward to was watching the next Mavs game because I couldn't wait to see what he did next. After years of bad teams and watching him carry, I thought, like we all did, that we were so damn close. The vibes were immaculate. Kyrie won me over instantly after some warranted initial skepticism. A year after we got so close, with a hobbled Luka against a red hot Celtics team, I thought we'd be right in the mix, if
not stronger next year.
Then it happened. I was sitting on my bed about to go to sleep when the headline came across my screen. "Mavericks trade for AD in blockbuster trad…" The headline didn't finish. My heart was racing, and I tried to convince myself we had traded Kyrie for him. In my heart I didn't even like that trade, but Luka makes mediocre centers look like all stars, so I wouldn't have been that angry. I clicked it and read what I knew but couldn't fathom to be true. If I weren't broke, I'd probably have thrown my phone across the room. I think I slept like two hours that night and went through every cycle of grief. Surely Shams was hacked. No f'ing way. Surely this would get blocked by the league. If it were one of my breakups, it would be my second worst one. I think I thought about it nonstop for about a month. I didn't think sports had that kind of hold on me.
I truly felt like I lost someone dear to me, as stupid as that sounds. It really hurt, and something that brought me so much joy nearly every day of my life was just ripped out and gone. The identity of the franchise I held in such high regard and cherished was thrown away in a single night. I felt nothing towards the NBA anymore. The first game happened, and what we all knew would happen, happened in an almost Shakespearean way. Go figure.
If it weren't for the gods giving us a gift from their bosom in Cooper Flagg, I probably would've jumped ship. I don't know if that makes me a bad fan, but it just didn't feel like the same team anymore. It felt like the Mavericks I knew were just discontinued like a bad Hostess snack. No warning, just there one day being enjoyed, then BAM! No more Swiss rolls. Like I said, I didn't watch anything for a long time, but I heard Coop was really him. I watched a couple of games when that filthy shoe salesman got canned, but every time I saw Kidd, I'd get pissed. Every time I saw Coop or Christie, I just thought of how we lost everything.
I guess I'm finally at the acceptance stage. I think I'm ready to go again. I like the Ujiri hiring and the Dusty May hiring. I relished the Kidd firing. I still want to convince myself Luka could sign here again and dominate with Coop and maybe have one or two more years with Ky. I know that has about the same probability as Mitch McConnell running a marathon at record pace, but a guy can dream.
I feel a bit behind on where we are. Can I get an update on what our actual three year outlook is? Who's looking good? Who's not? Is Rischarr someone to be interested in? How about the kid we just drafted? I went way overboard with this post, but I couldn't stop once I started. If you made it this far, I don't know what that says about you, but I hope you enjoyed the ride.
