Discussion Can we use this thread to report stations receiving new Myki readers...

..so that we don't have 50,000 separate posts and also I can update the map tracking which stations have new readers

Train stations - long distance V/Line rollout active

Myki area finished 7/12/2025, see progress gif here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MelbourneTrains/comments/1pgaoaz/new_myki_reader_rollout_completed_for_trains/

Last update 23/9/2026 - Wangaratta and Avenel

Trams - done!! (29/6/2026)

Update 1/9/2026: Added G Class note, Z3.168 and C2.5113 have new readers but are out of service, Z3.210 has been removed

Buses (by depot)

Last updated 25/6/2026, but please report any buses with the old readers! As we are not keeping track of every single bus it is possible that there are some individual buses that haven't been upgraded, but every operator has the vast majority done as far as we know.

Humour Has anyone here ever been on a train or bus where someone was fast asleep by the time the vehicle got to the last stop and if so what actually happens?

What would happen if someone didn’t wake up and the train or bus arrives at the end of the line, what the hell happens if you are just laying there unconscious on your own?

Anyone here either seen it happen or even been the person themselves? Would be fascinating to find out if it happens with buses as well

Article/Blog The Melbourne Suburban Rail Loop is in very advanced stages of construction and the Liberal-One Nation coalition STILL want to DESTROY all of this construction just because it’s a Labor project. Regardless of your views on the SRL, the current state of progress means it must be completed.

As someone who gets a lot of work on the Sandringham line, this is a regular post-work occurrence for me.

Activism/Idea Victoria uses SCATS too, when can we give buses and trams similar treatment, so it doesn't spend 80% of its time not moving?

Discussion Loud rail joints?

This is an odd one, so bear with me.

I live very very close to a railway. Think ‘bedroom 10 metres or so from the track with nothing between us’.

Unfortunately I also live near a section of rail joint.

It’s been tolerable for years and we’ve done what we can to treat the noise and most of the time I really don’t notice it, but in the last 2 weeks something has changed. As strange as it sounds, the sound is ‘looser’ and ‘clankier’ recently. When the train runs over the rail joint now, it sounds much more like the joint is smacking another piece of metal or a plate and is noticeably louder.

Is this something that eventually gets maintained or is this just something I’ll need to get used to?

Discussion Is political flyer distribution allowed inside Broadmeadows Station?

This morning I was at Broadmeadows Station and noticed One Nation people handing out political flyers in the station underpass, around the corner near the Pascoe Vale Road exit towards the bus stop.

What made me uncomfortable was their location. They were standing right at the corner of the underpass where passengers coming from Platforms 1 and 3 needed to walk to exit towards Pascoe Vale Road and the bus interchange. It wasn’t somewhere people could easily avoid if they were heading that way.

I’m curious whether this is allowed under Metro Trains’s policies.

I have no issue with people campaigning in appropriate places, but I don’t think passengers should have to walk past political campaigners at a station exit when they’re just trying to get where they need to go.

Does anyone know what Metro’s rules are?

Trams Possible track faults on 86 route?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone, I was riding the 86 tonight (just a few minutes ago) to get home, and between Parliament station (tram stop) and Smith st/Gertrude st I noticed some pretty odd behavior I don't notice when I usually commute.

I was on tram no.6023, and when we were passing through the turn onto nicholson st (stop 11, melbourne museum) suddenly everyone felt a huge bump, as if the tram itself had driven over a sizeable rock, or some other obstacle, suddenly the track is very very bumpy (much more so than usual), now this felt like nothing, sometimes a tram gets bumpy, sometimes the riding isn't so smooth, but after we turn onto gertrude st, before stop 12 (brunswick st), the tram starts getting quite bumpy again, and the lights in the back carriage begin experiencing issues (some would dim quite a lot, others were completely off), the tram would experience a less than smooth slow-down as we approached stop 12.

from there on, it was fine but after we depart stop 13, and begin approaching stop 14 (smith st/gertrude st) the tram starts shaking again, quite hard, and the tram really struggled to stop, normally this isn't something I see, and I would know as I usually ride the 86 atleast 4 times a day for commute and for getting into the city to see friends. the tram overshot its stop and had a very very hard stop, sending a few passengers tumbling.

I'm not sure if its connected but this morning whilst commuting into the city, (roughly 8 AM) there was a car crash (not with a tram) on the corner of gertrude and nicholson st (just before the 86 towards the city reaches melbourne museum) which disrupted tram services along that line during the early to mid day.

any idea whats wrong with the tracks or potentially the tram? I ride this every day and I've yet to have such a bizarre tram ride. it feels like a potential safety risk given the driver was having some trouble stopping the tram and ended up overshooting where it usually stops.

Activism/Idea Vlocity PIDs

• Upvotes

Why don’t Vlocity trains have more informative PIDs? Once they leave the station, passengers have to rely on conductor announcements which are often difficult to understand (and impossible for anyone with a hearing disability). The dot matrix displays seem terribly outdated, if they’re even operational.

Case in point - a passenger boarded yesterday afternoon’s Eaglehawk express service intending to travel to Deer Park but obviously got on the wrong train. This one runs express between Footscray and Castlemaine. By the time they realised what had happened the train was already in the outer suburbs. (The passenger then hit the emergency button so the whole train was made aware of what had happened.)

Better onboard information would have easily allowed the passenger to notice their mistake much earlier and disembark at Southern Cross, or even change at Footscray. With no new regional rolling stock in the works, surely it’s time for the state government to start replacing some of this 1970s technology?

Discussion Whats the go with these seats? 1 or 2 person?

Post image

Are these seats for one or two people?

I sat slightly to the side of one of these seats today on a packed train and a lady sat next to me. Then after she got up another lady sat in her place. I’m fairly small so it wasn’t uncomfortable but I was slightly surprised. I’ve always thought of these seats as single occupancy but apparently other people don’t. Would you share it or keep it all to yourself?

Discussion Sandringham Line Through Running Experience

The sandy line has been (apparently) through running with Werribee/Williamstown/Laverton since the timetable change at the end of August.

I typically travel to Southern Cross from the Sandy line, so theoretically this should be quite useful.

In practice, I would guess that the train only actually through runs about 40% of the time. From southern cross to flinders street, you now have to stick your head out the window and find that it is turning around back to Werribee. On the way into Flinders from Sandringham it often also turns around.

This whole situation just leads to a lot of confusion for everyone involved. Very often at flinders street I see people who are not aware of this ‘feature’ of the network freak out when their train turns around and heads the wrong way.

As a regular user, it also means I have no idea where my train is going to go. At southern cross I sometimes get tricked into waiting for the Sandringham destination train (rather than the Flinders Street one) only to have it terminate at Flinders Street anyway. I am often walking past the paper banner at the Platform 13 stairs which says ‘Sandringham trains depart from Platform 8 and 9’ rushing to get a Sandringham train which has just moved from the train I was on already to Platform 13.

Overall, I have found this switch quite a poor experience. I understand there are operational reasons for this but I think in general if you get on a train with Sandringham as the destination then it should actually go to Sandringham. What are everyones thoughts on this/what experience have you had - is it just me being mildly annoyed by this every single day?

Activism/Idea Peanuts

I hope the flair is correct.

If you're going to eat peanuts or any other nut that needs to be shelled while on the train, use a brain cell or two and don't leave the shells all over the floor. Apart from it being littering, we've got the highest rates of peanut and nut allergies here and now the train is contaminated.

This is the second time I've seen it in the past two weeks on the Sunbury line and I'm pissed off.

Thanks in advance.
