Discussion Why is OSU hosting an IDF soldier who served in Gaza?

Post image
584 Upvotes

Students Supporting Israel is hosting an IDF soldier at OSU who recently served in Gaza.

Considering the destruction and civilian deaths in Gaza, along with the serious allegations of war crimes during the conflict, it’s concerning to see someone being brought to campus specifically to speak about their experience serving there.

Does anyone know if OSU approved or sponsored this event, or if the university has addressed any concerns about it?

Discussion FIRE has given OSU an F grade on their freedom of speech on Campus

Thumbnail share.google
1.4k Upvotes

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression has officially given OSU, as well as 166 of 257 Ohio Universities, an F rating for it's freedom of speech.

I wonder why, considering on-campus protests are broken up by police, teachers who are reported to the state are routinely fired (mostly and Ohio State Government issue, but OSU gave into the law without any push back in any way), and we cannot even use CHALK on campus anymore. Like, it is INSANE how much Universities have changed from the paragons of Free Speech in the USA to now being places of silencing.

Thought it would be an important piece of information to know.

Discussion PSA: if you want to do music in college but are not a music major, there are still many options for you!

I just wanted to say this, since I feel like a lot of people think if they aren't pursuing music professionally then they're "locked out" of the music programs at the collegiate level, or will be way behind everyone else.

Whether it's choir, pop bands, jazz big band, jazz combo, wind band, or orchestra, there are at least three hierarchical tiers of groups for each ensemble. Campus strings, university band, and jazz workshop for instance, are all three practically designed and intended specifically for non-majors.

There are classes available for private lessons for non-majors, meaning if you took piano lessons in highschool and really liked them, that is still open to you at the collegiate level without needing to be extremely good at piano. If you're able to pay out of pocket, there are also plenty of music students and grad students who will be excited to give you lessons themselves, often for much cheaper than a professor.

There are over 100 practice rooms within the music building, and while they are prioritized for music majors, you are still fully able to book a room or even just stroll into the music building and find an open room.

It's a very common story that someone did band or took piano/violin/whatever lessons or did youth orchestra in highschool, loved it, but didn't love it enough to pursue it as a career and thus totally stopped playing after highschool. I've heard this from students, and I hear it very frequently from adults who miss it and wish they had continued playing after highschool. I want to say this: if you miss it, then you can still do it!! I'm a music education major so I am biased, but I think music is one of the most important things for our quality of life in this world. It enriches our souls and unites us across languages and across countries and across continents. If you want to do music, then do music. If you love it then keep loving it, if you miss it then find a way to bring it back into your life. There are so many opportunities for you no matter what your skill level is, and life is too short to discard something you love because it "isn't useful" to you.

Discussion Who is in charge of ticketing and how do we get them fired?

I know this is harsh but I feel like the ball has been really dropped with the football tickets this year and surely someone needs to take accountability. Just like any job, if you mess up this poorly, you should be fired.

Discussion Stop crossing the street when the light is green

ESPECIALLY in front of Scott. like I get it, you got places to be, but so do drivers. And then you start a domino affect that makes another 20-30 people cross and now there’s a whole line of cars that has to wait for the light to turn green again when you could’ve just waited the 20 seconds in the first place. Stop being an inconsiderate dick <3

Discussion how does this dude ryan day blow this bad at coaching?

dude goes all conservative 2nd half and whenever there’s a 1:10 left in the 4th he wastes a timeout and tries to make a goal-line stand at the one yard line instead of let them score and give your offense more time 😂😂. dude is paid millions a year to coach and doesn’t even have the IQ to do it. not to mention our damn kickers cant ever make a meaningful kick. at this point im trying out next year because I can make 50 yarders pretty consistently and ive never done any sort of training other than play soccer

Discussion Be careful y’all in Short North.

I was at Short North Pint House with my friends watching the Pacers vs the Thunders game. Right on Kerr Street behind the building, At approximately 11:00pm my car’s rear triangle window had been broken into and my MacBook Pro along with several (expensive) electronics chargers were stolen from my car. My items were sitting in my laptop bag in my back seat. I have 20% tinted windows, so it would’ve been impossible to see a black laptop bag in a full black interior tinted windowed car in an already very very dimly lit area. Unless they actively scout around the car and shine their flash into it from the front windshield, which should not be tinted, legally.

And I happen to have a rear + front dash cam but unfortunately no battery kit to keep it running while the car is off. Definitely a good investment for everyone in the area.

Sorry for the rambling. Police won’t do anything for stolen property under $3000, and filing a police report that’ll likely get disregarded sounds depressing, but I’ll do it anyway because whoever does this needs to be held accountable. Be safe yall.

Discussion OSUWex sending out approved clothing vendor email

Apparently employees of the medical center were reminded recently in an email that they can only wear approved vendor clothing/scrubs at work in an effort to “keep branding consistent and make patients feel more comfortable.”

Am wondering heavily if this in response to some employees getting things custom made that don’t include the Wexner name on the coat/pullover etc.

Discussion Serious Question - Debating Second Degree

Hello,

I am an alumnus that graduated in December 2016 with my degree in International Studies: Relations and Diplomacy, minor Mandarin Chinese. Had plans to double major in Mandarin Chinese but I couldn’t afford another year of school. I had plans to work as a compliance trade officer, military officer, work for FBI, DIA, NSA, or work as a recruiter for an international company. It’s been 10 years now and I’ve worked in financial services but I keep
Ruminating and wondering whether I should pursue a second degree in Communications to open more doors in recruiting, advertising, Human Resources, Business Development or if I should just accept my current bachelors in International Relations? I have liked working in financial services but times are tough now and I’m worried that my degree may not be as recognized as a communications degree if I were to be laid off? I debated business operations management but that would take me 3 years to get going part time. And I could get a communications degree in a year as a part time student. I’m just wondering if the extra year for a second degree in communications would be worth it in addition to my pre-existing international relations degree?

Please let me know what you think. Need options. Psychology is out because I have no plans on pursuing psychology on a grad level.

Please let me know what you recommend?

Thank you,

Discussion Questions for OSU students (from a professor)

Hi everyone. I’m a professor at OSU and I’ve been inundated with lots of freak-outs by my colleagues about moving their classes online. No doubt it’s difficult but it’s made me wonder about what you all—as students—are worried about?

Do you have reliable access to the internet where you are?

Are you worried about access to food?

Is your living situation safe?

My guess is you all are dealing with concerns that are unique to you and if possible we’d love to use our energy and connections to advocate on your behalf.

Edit to add: if you need a place to stay, see if this resourcethis resource might be helpful.

Also, here is a link to Osu’s student emergency fund .

If you're in a bind, you should take this quick "Mutual Aid Central Ohio" survey. On this survey, it EXPLICITLY asks if you need money, rides, food, help with a place to stay, etc.:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeJF-PBvxYP8d4gAEZ3y3dhs3RTqK3U4J9kcMS-1fGh9wEPnQ/viewform

It also asks if you're able to provide some of these services, including translation and interpretation of different languages.

Discussion How do students go no-contact with their families

I know that there are people who fully don’t talk to their families or never go home for break but like… That just seems so difficult. I don’t have a good relationship with my dad, but I still have to talk to him to help pay for school and get insurance info etc etc.

I’m just wondering like, how do you navigate the fafsa with no parental involvement? What do you do over breaks? How are you paying for everything?

Discussion Found this yesterday in the basement of Smith Lab

I can't shake the feeling that I've stumbled into some twisted joke, but there's something deeply unsettling about this place. The constant flickering of the lights only adds to the eerie atmosphere. On my way to class I stopped to use the bathroom in Smith lab’s basement. That's when I found that sign. And for some reason, the photos came out grainy and unfocused, like it’s refusing to capture whatever lurks there. Every time I'm down there, an inexplicable sensation creeps over me its like a chilling feeling that I'm not alone. I’ll come back to take more pics when I can find the courage :/

Discussion LESBIANSs 👹👹👹👹👹

I'm (18f) an incoming freshman at OSU and I was wondering how the lesbians up there are doing. I'm aware that Columbus has a pretty decent queer community BUT I honestly don't really surround myself with queer people. Well, that might change idk. Like im just not the type of person to wear pride merch and join Igbtq clubs etc etc. Nothing against it, just personally i dont do that. I would say im pretty extroverted. I love meeting new people (talked to like 20 ppl at orientation a couple of weeks ago!) and I'm 100% the type of person to say YES to everything involving hanging out with anyone. I wouould not say that I "look" gay. Im not masc. More fem ig, but not quite? I dont wear makeup, get my nails done etc. Hmm, i think im feeding into stereotypes rn, my bad. I did dye my hair red recently so ig thats the only thing. Well i only dyed my ends. Cuz im scared of commitment. Anyhow. Any input appreciated and I hope I won't be lonelyyyy

Discussion New Branding Ideas

Post image
94 Upvotes

Possibly a stupid idea but it’s one I’ve thought about for a while and I wanted to see how others felt.

When Ohio State is brought up, the one word that comes to mind is football. That’s our identity and the school often feels like an afterthought, especially to those outside of Ohio. This is a little irritating since we do have lots of great academic programs, but also it’s understandable since it’s something that many people are passionate about.

The way that a lot of schools combat this is having 2 distinct identities and logos, one for academics and one for athletics. We technically do this already by taking “Ohio State” out of the block O but most people don’t even realize they’re different logos.

I feel like separating the athletic and academic sides of Ohio State could provide a lot of benefits for the university without taking anything away from our athletics. This is already done with Berkeley, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and many others.

We could keep the block O and maybe add a buckeye leaf for the athletic logo, then come up with something new for academics. I’ve looked at a few designs online from old memorabilia, as well as the crest which I attached. I know some of these are still used but they’re less common on merchandise and I thought they just looked cool.

What do you guys think? Is separating those aspects a good idea? I feel like it’s a good way to promote the school without taking anything away from our sports culture.
