I made some games for a special halloween class this week. You can use them as well (perfect for 9-15y.o)

Hey guys. I'm an ESL teacher at an academy in Seoul and I've been making games for my own lessons. For Halloween I put together three things you can use this week too:

Skeleton Hangman - normal hangman, but every wrong letter knocks a bone off the skeleton. The animations are the fun part.
Halloween word lists, or type in your own.

Halloween Race - a team board game with Halloween picture questions (candy, costumes, animals). Answer right, then you can roll the die.

Halloween Cryptic - a printable picture-code puzzle to find where the witch hid the candy. Honestly my students like this one the most.

All free, no sign-up: https://classbop.com/specials

Would love some feedback please !

30 minute lessons

I have a lot of 30 minute lesson bookings through the company I work for. Does anyone have any tips on making an effective lesson plan for a short time? Has anyone tried teaching one lesson split over 2 sessions?

How long does everyone think the online ESL industry has left? With the rise of AI and robotics, do you expect the industry to collapse?

We all know that AI is getting better all the time and it's already putting pressure on different industries. I personally know a friend (a lawyer) who has been made redundant, and she largely blames that on AI being used to augment her firms legal research.

How long do you think the online ESL industry has left? I'm sure there are people here who have been in the industry a long time, and some newcomers. How long do you expect to get out of this industry and do you predict there will be some kind of industry collapse at some point in the future?

A small tool for keeping lesson notes right under your webcam

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm a developer, not a teacher, so tell me if this is useful or not. I made a Windows app called Lenslines that puts your notes or script in a small strip right under the webcam, so students see you looking at them while you read.

It can scroll as you speak and pause when you stop, or you can scroll it yourself. It's hidden from screen shares in apps that use Windows' standard capture, so it stays off your shared slides on Zoom or Teams. Test it once with your platform first.

$9.99 once on the Microsoft Store, Windows only: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9PJJ4RZ3PB0P?cid=reddit-onlineesl

What do you usually keep on screen during a lesson? I'd like to make it fit how teachers actually work.

Scam or Legit ? Online tutoring company

Company name:

CANADA AMERICA CULTURE AND EDUCATION CONSULTING INC

I found them on Indeed, looking to make some extra money in the evenings with online tutoring. They posted a job for Gr 6-8 Online Evening Part Time English Tutoring. I applied, met the owner on a zoom meeting; he was extremely nice and answered questions I had. You get paid for the classes you teach over a 2 week period. Pay is via direct deposit and a SIN is required for tax purposes. Students are in a Google Classroom and all sessions are done on zoom.

I have taught 2 classes, and pay day is this week. I am still weary of the company and sending my banking info and SIN.

I've done some digging and gone on the Canadian Fed website and noticed the official record currently displays warnings that two consecutive annual filings are overdue and that Corporations Canada has sent a notice of intent to dissolve the company as of 2025. However, the 2024-2026 annual returns were filed and the company status is Active.

Sorry, this is alot of info but just trying to determine if its worth continuing or if I should search for online work elsewhere.

TLDR; Canada America Culture and Education Condulting Inc- scam or legit?

Quick questions about Superprof’s reality, commission, and teaching International Biology curricula!

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m planning to start tutoring Biology (International Curricula like IGCSE/IB/AP) in English on Superprof, but I’ve been reading so many contradictory things online and would love to hear from real tutors who have actual experience on the platform.

Could you please share your honest experiences regarding the following?

The Reality of Teaching on Superprof: How does the platform actually work in practice? Is it truly effective for getting steady students, or is it mostly marketing?

Fees & Commissions: What are the actual costs, commission rates, or subscription fees deducted from tutors?

Pricing Strategy: For international curriculum tutoring in English, what is a realistic hourly rate for beginners on the platform, and how do payments work?

Student Inquiries & Conversion: How do lesson requests usually work, and what is the conversion rate from free trial lessons to paid ongoing students?

Any advice, tips, or hidden things I should watch out for would be deeply appreciated. Thank you all so much in advance! 🌟

Other online teaching jobs like Qkids?

Hello everyone! I currently teach with QKids, and I LOVE IT! I teach about 15(+) classes a week (EST) . I just wish they offered afternoon weekday classes Monday-Thursday.
I would love to work with a company thats similar to Qkids if anyone knows of any.
Unfortunately I tried with VIPTeacher/Kids but they rejected me and they changed my props right before my mock interview without telling me.
Thanks !!

Has anyone heard about or worked for the platform Learn Link? How's your experience been and is it worth trying?🤔

Been looking for ESL Platforms to apply for and just trying to check if this one is legit.

What other companies do you recommend that are hiring currently? Ones that are open to taking non native English teachers.

Would appreciate the help!

Help me choose a platform - online course and live classes

I'm selling live classes and an online course both for different age groups.

What is the best tool / platform to use.

The age groups vary from as young as 5 years all the way to adults, so progress reports are important for parents.

If it can combine landing pages, free previews, drip lessons and email marketing that would be a bonus.

I'm looking for a tool that does the lot if possible.

Interested in tried and tested recommendations.

Brainstorm - video games as a tool for teaching?

I've used video games in the past to help with English immersion. The games I've played with students are Don't Starve Together and Little Misfortune. I also think Animal Crossing could be a good game to use for immersive teaching, but I haven't tried that yet.

I haven't used games in teaching enough to develop much structure or figure out what works best yet. It's a nice method because it's fun for me as well haha. But I'd like to have some more teaching methods in place to make sure students can get the most out of a video game teaching session.

I do try to incorporate some ideas from total physical response, and instruct the student to interact with the game a certain way, and have them follow or copy me.

Has anyone else done something similar in their teaching? Please share what's worked for you!

Also, if anyone has any ideas for how to teach using video games, please comment!

Twenix/ Spanish lessons

Is anyone currently teaching Spanish on Twenix? I submitted my demo in December last year, but I never received an email letting me know whether I was selected or not. Are they currently hiring Spanish teachers? I submitted my demo again, but I’m not sure what’s going on. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Monotonous voice

I'm new to teaching, and although I have a fairly good command of English, I've been told multiple times that my voice sounds monotonous. It's been making me really self-conscious, and I'm starting to question whether teaching is the right career for me.

Every time someone comments on my voice, it gets to me more than I'd like to admit. It even triggers my existing insecurities about my appearance and self-image.

Has anyone else experienced something similar when they first started teaching? Is having a naturally monotonous voice something you can work on and improve, or could it genuinely be a problem in the long run?

No Luck

Hi, Filipino tutor here. Does anyone know if there are any companies who are currently hiring and give decent to high pay?

I've had experience teaching ESL for a few years now. Recently, I tried 5-7 job sites and would even check Facebook and look for websites separately because I'm out of work for the last couple of months. I would rarely get an e-mail back because there's a high volume of application across the websites and even on Facebook there are profiles (usually other ESL tutors too) who would share job postings to a wide audience. As much as I support this and would love to see other people also get employed, I would click on the post and see it would already have around 30-50 people who liked, commented, or possibly applied for the role which minimizes my own chances.

It also surprised me that I would rarely hear back from ESL companies in my own city. A few years ago, they would message quickly because they were urgently looking for a teacher to fill in the role even without any experience. Now they don't even check their emails unless I personally message their page on Facebook saying I sent my application. It's really frustrating.

Anyway, I got into Preply but haven't had a student yet since I'm still in the process of completing the courses to boost my profile.

I'm looking for: full-time, WFH setup, preferably adult students

I would appreciate it if anyone can help me out!
