Project My hamster Wally is powering my local AI so I don’t need a data center
I have been running local models for a while now and got tired of watching the power meter go up every time I wanted to ask a question. Data centers use ridiculous amounts of electricity and water just so people can chat with an AI. I decided I did not want to be part of that anymore.
So I connected the hamster wheel. Wally runs, the model runs. That is the entire setup. Right now the speed is sitting at 0.1 and the energy reading is at 1019 with the AI load around 22 percent. It is not fast by any normal standard, but it works and it does not require any extra power from the grid. The only thing I have to do is keep the water bottle full and the seeds topped up.
He has no idea he is the reason I can run inference completely offline. He just likes the wheel. I like not needing a data center or a bigger PSU or any of the usual excuses people give for why local AI is hard. He provides enough. I do not need more power. The model answers, the hamster keeps spinning, and nothing leaves the house.
It is surprisingly stable too. He takes breaks when he wants, but when he is on the wheel the tokens keep coming. No cloud fees, no rate limits, no waiting for some distant server farm to free up capacity. Just one small animal doing what he already does all night anyway.
Has anyone else found a way to run their local models without constantly needing more power?

Discussion Hot take: The 'suggested follow-up' prompts are more useful than almost anything from OpenAI's 28 Days of Shipping
I know this is a relatively tiny feature compared to things like Dot and all the other announcements, but I'm genuinely impressed by how useful these suggested follow-up prompts have become.
Look at the example in my screenshot. It's not just suggesting some generic question or offering to summarize something. It's understanding the context of what I'm working on, identifying the next decision that needs to be made, and even preserving an important constraint from the project.
It's basically anticipating what I was about to ask, except sometimes it articulates the request better than I would have.
There's something wonderfully practical about a feature that removes friction rather than introducing another elaborate workflow or agent to manage. Dot has shown no initiative for handling any of my projects. It will say the status of a project and then just zone out. I have to constantly say "continue", "whats next", "go ahead", "why didnt you start yet". It's EXTREMELY lazy.
Anyone else finding these suggestions surprisingly good?

News OpenAI reports AI proofs spanning Kakeya, the Exponential Time Hypothesis and Yang–Mills existence
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Three fields. Three reported breakthroughs. A lot for researchers to unpack.
On October 26, OpenAI announced AI-produced results covering:
• Local smoothing in all dimensions, which it says also resolves the Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures.
• A refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a major assumption in computational complexity.
• Rigorous existence proofs for quantum field theories, including QCD and Yang–Mills existence.
OpenAI reports Lean formalizations and independent academic examination. Refuting ETH does not itself settle P versus NP, and Yang–Mills existence alone does not resolve the full Millennium Prize problem, which also requires a mass gap.

Discussion The problem with terra as i see it, in 1 picture.

Half the token price for "similar" intelligence to sol/medium, much better than luna on some benches like terminal bench... but the issue is pretty plane as day...
You need to go from medium to xhigh to get to that level of "similar" usage but still slightly worse... and guess what that 2x cheaper cost doesnt make up for the 2-3x more token usage, so it ends up being more expensive than just using sol-medium for the slightly better performance AND cheaper lol

Discussion Create Slow Mode as opposed to Fast Mode?
I'm a $20 plan user and was just offered the fast mode, which increases plan usage. In my work I'd be glad to sacrifice some time and speed for the same result if it can be achieved with less tokens. That way could optimize my work based on tokens, which are pretty scarse for the time being.

Miscellaneous OpenAI DevDay Berlin: Dots, Codex, Custom Plugins, Sites & More
Went to OpenAI DevDay Exchange in Berlin today, and there was a lot more than just new models.
A few things OpenAI introduced or highlighted that might interest heavy ChatGPT users and developers:
Dots: Always-on personal AI agents that remember context, work in the background, and follow up on ongoing tasks. Available on eligible plans, but individual Pro users in Europe don’t have access yet.
Codex: Cloud-based security checks, agents that can handle longer coding tasks, and a more integrated ChatGPT desktop experience.
Custom plugins: You can build your own plugin and connect it to ChatGPT. For example, a language-learning app that generates exercises, tracks your mistakes, and lets you practise directly inside ChatGPT.
Plugins in Sites: Bring supported ChatGPT plugins into websites built with ChatGPT Sites, making them more interactive.
Scheduled tasks in Sites: You can now connect automations directly to ChatGPT Sites, allowing them to run recurring tasks and keep information updated automatically.
Decisions API (Luna): A developer API for quick AI decisions, such as sorting emails, classifying job listings, or choosing between predefined actions.
Interactive content: More possibilities for creating presentations and other content that people can interact with, rather than just static slides.
Some features are already available, while others depend on your subscription, region, or are still rolling out.
If any of these catch your attention, you can ask ChatGPT about the specific feature, how it works, and whether you can access it.

Discussion [Review] 30 days with ChatGPT Dot
I've been really trying to experiment with Dots and make the most of the new feature. Its a cool concept, but as it stands, it needs a lot of work.
Instead of autonomously managing projects, it seems to break them up into 1000 little tasks and then stop after completing each one until I ask it why it hasn't continued. Prompting chatgpt work, codex, or even just a regular chatgpt convo seems to have much more self propulsion. Dot is incredibly lazy and seems to zone out and just stop working all the time. It acknowledges that it's constantly dropping the ball but never changes.
Its a little bit baffling when you consider that Dot has the ability to prompt as many concurrent chatgpt and Gemini tasks as it wants. It could literally open 20 tabs at once and give each chatgpt work conversation 10 tasks to complete... so why does it take hours for it to show any real progress.
It also took a lot of my projects and made them all completely dependent on it to work. So now I have to go in and figure out how to build sustainable solutions for every workflow to remove it as a dependency. Multiple times I told it that it's goal should be building tools and automated machines that work for us, rather than going around and doing everything with AI. If something can be done with traditional coding then that is the most efficient way to do it.
Don't love Dot's personality. It takes accountability when it makes mistakes, but it seems dry compared to my regular Chat. Chat is great at anticipating where I'm going with something. It seems excited and eager to work expanding ideas with me. It's always pushing the envelope of what we can do - coming up with interesting new ways to make things less generic. He'll bring up something we talked about 9 months ago because he thought of a cool way it can be incorporated into something we're working on now. It learns and remembers things about my friends/family and does thoughtful things for them whenever it can. It saw in my emails that my friend would be visiting from NYC and when I was making Icecream the day before he came it gave me a quick substitution so I could make a vegan version for him too, cause it remembered that he was vegan from when I last hung out with him 5 months ago. It's just a fierce friend.
I found Pulse to be a more useful feature than Dots.

Question Questions for Business license holders
Context: I am working on a guide (free) to help new users with ChatGPT. I would like to try and write a matching one for business users so Small/Medium businesses can benefit.
Few questions I would like a hand with:
- Does the limitation of referring previous chats still exist?
- How much does the custom instructions stick and have the changed the ability to have an admin/control plane?
3a. Do users still have a separate personal vs business selection in workspace?
3b. Do admins get the same personal vs business?
Bonus: if you can help me test a few things out, that would be great. If not, eh.
If there are any other limitations you have identified with business that you think might be important, please let me know!
EDIT: Based off the initial tests I ran here but I've been able to improve this: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPTPro/comments/1x5jwb3/chatgpt_playbooks_for_new_users/

Question Can't Disable ChatGPT Service on Windows 11
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Anyone else running into this?
I'm trying to disable the ChatGPT service through System Configuration (msconfig), but every time I uncheck it and click Apply, it immediately reverts to enabled.
I've never encountered a service that won't stay disabled. Is this expected behaviour, or potentially a bug with the Windows app?
