Opinion War memorial vandalized

Post image
• Upvotes

Anyone else a bit saddened the war memorial was vandalized and has been for weeks now and nothings been done :/

Called and reported to the city maybe three weeks ago. Submitted a form today. Not sure if it’s been triaged as a lower priority because there are no hate symbols (which I get in theory) but jeez would be kinda awkward to have this there for Remembrance Day….

Regardless I think it would be a fairly easy task for city staff to delegate this to a public works employee or outsource somewhere rather than leave it to the last minute. It has been disheartening to walk past it daily on my way to work.

In my opinion this also looks very juvenile which is REALLY concerning that there is a youth or young adult who thinks this is acceptable. I know there are unhoused people who utilize the park during the night but I can’t see them rocking the boat when they’re just looking for refuge.

EDIT ❗️Staff are actioning cleanup operations and are contacting city police about the vandalism. - see comments from Councillor Matt Crowley.

She uses criticism of another politician to defame and tries to derail his campaign by accusing him of crimes? She has got to be so angry right now. 🤣

I hope there are consequences for this.

I'm looking to see if anywhere in town sells eastern European foods like Birch water and kvass, the one place I know that sells it for sure is Ontario fresh and tasty located in Etobicoke, I like the stuff but it's not worth driving to the heart of Toronto to grab wondering if there's anywhere in town or relatively close that sells those

Other Looking for Peterborough WoW players

Hello Peterborough 👋

Hopefully this is acceptable within Rule 4. I did ask the mods for permission to post this here. 🙏

I've been trying to find some more WoW players around Peterborough who might be interested in a growing community for WoW players across Ontario.

Long story short, a little over a month ago I posted in the Barrie subreddit looking for some local people to play WoW with. A Discord came out of it, people from other parts of Ontario kept showing up, and somehow now there are almost 900 of us.

We've got people from all over the province, but Peterborough/Kawarthas is one of the areas where we don't have nearly as many people yet. So really, I'm just hoping to find some of you hiding around here. Retail, Classic, Forever, casual, hardcore, whatever. The whole idea is just having a place to meet other WoW players who aren't necessarily hundreds or thousands of kilometres away.

There is also a Horde PvE guild forming for WoW Forever, but that's completely optional and isn't really the point of the Discord. Lots of people already have guilds or aren't playing Forever at all.

Also, obligatory disclaimer because I know how many people feel about it: yes, the graphics in use for the banner/logo are AI. I've asked if anyone in the community wants to make us some proper human-made stuff but haven't had any takers yet. I would love to feature something made by one of our wonderful community members.

Anyway, if you're a WoW player around Peterborough or the Kawarthas, come say hi:

I may be following my partner to the city as they study at Trent. I’d love to hear people’s first hand experiences for things like local healthcare, public transport, sidewalks, shop entrances & other general “public accessibility“ notes. For reference I’m a wheelchair user with a power assist.

Other ALTO - changes to expropriation

This was posted on X by sassygirl. It appears this is an accurate account of Bill C-15. I don't know how to link the post, so I copied and pasted it.

ATTENTION ONTARIO AND QUEBEC PROPERTY OWNERS — CARNEY'S GOVERNMENT HAS CHANGED THE RULES FOR ALTO!

If you own a home, farm or property anywhere near the proposed ALTO high-speed railway route, you need to understand what has changed!

On March 26, 2026, Bill C-15 received Royal Assent and became law. Buried within this massive budget bill was the new High-Speed Rail Network Act, giving the federal government expanded powers to acquire private land for ALTO.

Here's what Carney's government has changed:

🔴 1. ALTO DOES NOT HAVE TO TRY BUYING YOUR LAND FIRST!

Under the new legislation, ALTO is no longer required to demonstrate that it tried unsuccessfully to purchase your land before requesting expropriation.

🔴 2. YOUR LAND CAN BE EXPROPRIATED WITHOUT YOUR AGREEMENT!

If your property is needed for the railway, the government can pursue compulsory acquisition even if you refuse to sell. Compensation rights remain, but your consent is not necessarily required.

🔴 3. YOUR RIGHT TO A PUBLIC EXPROPRIATION HEARING HAS BEEN REMOVED!

The ordinary federal requirement for an independent public hearing following an expropriation objection no longer applies to ALTO. Property owners retain the right to submit written objections, but that is not the same as having a public hearing!

🔴 4. YOU HAVE ONLY 30 DAYS TO FILE A WRITTEN OBJECTION!

Once the formal expropriation notice is published in the Canada Gazette, affected individuals have 30 days to submit their objections in writing.

And here's the disturbing part: An objection does not automatically prevent the government from proceeding!

🔴 5. YOUR PROPERTY COULD FACE RESTRICTIONS BEFORE THE RAILWAY IS APPROVED!

The legislation allows certain restrictions on construction and property improvements, and land acquisition can proceed before the final environmental assessment decision.

🔴 6. ALTO CAN CLAIM FIRST REFUSAL IF YOU TRY TO SELL!

ALTO can register a right of first refusal on designated properties, potentially lasting up to eight years, giving it the opportunity to match an offer from another buyer.

SO WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

Carney's government has made it easier and faster for Ottawa to acquire private property for ALTO, while removing important procedural protections that property owners previously had.

Farmers, homeowners and affected communities can still object, seek legal remedies and challenge aspects of the project. But they must understand the new rules and respond promptly to formal notices.

And remember, ALTO's final route and full financial costs have not yet been settled!

Yet the government has already changed the law to make land acquisition easier.

In my opinion, that's putting the government's project timetable ahead of the rights and concerns of the people whose properties could be affected.

CANADIANS DESERVE A SAY BEFORE THEIR LAND IS TAKEN — NOT JUST A NOTICE TELLING THEM WHAT OTTAWA INTENDS TO DO!

Please share this with anyone who owns property near the proposed ALTO corridor. Know your rights, watch for official notices and don't miss the objection deadlines!

🇨🇦 ALTO IS NOT ABOVE PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY!

Question Why Street Sweepers and not Leaf Collectors?

I will never understand why this grubby town has street sweepers cruising by all the time and yet no budget for Leaf Collectors - which are actually needed. In any other residential town with trees you would have leaf suckers come around and suck up all the leaves at the curb instead of stuffing 742 leaf bags (at 60.c each) and putting them out at the curb.

This uses Ontario’s inspection categories: 🔴 means at least one critical food safety issue, 🟡 means non-critical issues only, and 🟢 means no infractions. Non-critical issues, like maintenance or paperwork, still need fixing but don’t by themselves mean food is unsafe. This report covers Peterborough restaurants, cafés and food retailers, excluding retirement homes, shelters, treatment centres, child care facilities, schools, campuses, hotels, seniors’ and community centres, and event halls. Results reflect the inspection date; check the disclosure portal for current status.

Source: Peterborough Public Health Environmental Health Portal. No premises were ordered closed this period. Food was destroyed at Wee Wok Express during its inspection.
