Good beginner ocean fishing kayak recommendations for San Diego

Hey y’all! I am looking for any suggestions/recommendations for a beginner ocean fishing kayak. I live in San Diego and plan to mostly launch off of the La Jolla shores area.

For some additional context, I surf regularly and also used to use a cheap inflatable kayak off of La Jolla shores but have never fished in the ocean off one.

Budget is 500-2000$ (but can be flexible if needed)

Also if y’all have any tips on safety/gear/rods etc I’m all ears!

Question about eating Skipjack

Hello again, SoCal anglers! I asked a while ago about tuna fishing in San Diego, I want to thank all who responded! It was a help! My friend caught 1 yellowfin and 5 skipjack. He gave me a piece of each as well as skipjack collars. Now, when I was growing up, skippies were not prized for tablefare. I know how to cook the yellowfin, but what's the best way to eat the skippies? Any help would be appreciated as my friend wanted to show his appreciation to me for getting him into fishing in the Pacific.

What’s the best full day offshore boat in San Diego out of H&M Sportfishing

Going out with my mom it’s both our first times on an offshore trip ( we usually do 3/4 days or half days ) and I really wanna get on some fish for her. Wondering what the best boat out of H&M for a full day offshore trip would be.

Castaic lake trout stock?

I saw online people saying how they stocked trout at castaic but it was too hot so they all died off or something. I tried finding info about the stock online but can’t find anything. Anyone know where I can find something? Please don’t send a link to the cdfw website, I looked there

Kayak rockfish spots

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hello everyone!
I started kayaking not too long ago and I would love to catch some rockfish off of it. I’m not sure where I would be able to due to the fact that we have to fish 300ft+ for the rest of the year so if anyone has any spots or would want to go fishing together it’d be greatly appreciated! thank you all!

Mission Bay (socal cat tax photos)

Heading down to SD next weekend with the family and planning to sneak out solo early Sunday(and Monday) morning around 4:30 or 5 to Mission Bay. Trying to see if it’s even worth throwing lines in the rain or if I should just sleep in.

Gonna have one bait n wait soaking shrimp (what I usually get my channel cats on) on a pyramid dropper loop, and for hunting I'm bringing a handful of different lures to work around grey light.

Mostly trying to avoid slick jetty boulders in the pitch dark. Are spots like Mission Point Beach, Hospitality Point, or the Quivira Basin edge worth soaking a bait and casting from flat ground? I like that whole zone since there's open channel current on one side and calm bay on the other.

Also, since this trip is a SeaWorld birthday run for my boys but also Halloween weekend, does anyone know solid neighborhood streets nearby for trick-or-treating Saturday evening? Appreciate any pro tips for candy and safe fishing.

Cat tax from the East Branch aqueduct attached.

Hansen Dam Upper Lake/Pond Fishing

Title: Anyone catching anything at Hansen Dam Fishing Lake lately?

I've been out to the small fishing lake at Hansen Dam twice in the last two weeks, and so far all I've caught is one tiny bass on a small silver Kast master.

Planning to head back and try nightcrawlers under a bobber to see if I have better luck.

Anyone been fishing there recently? What have you been catching, and what bait or lures have been working? Curious to hear how everyone else is doing out there!
