Budget-Friendly Cat Food & Litter Guide for U.S. Rescuers, Colony Caretakers & Multi-Cat Households

Hi US-based Superheroes! 😺

Whether you’re caring for a colony, suddenly drowning in “just one more stray,” running a rural rescue with no resources, or supporting dozens of hungry mouths on your own paycheck, you’re doing rescue work, even if no one’s calling it that.

Be very proud of yourselves 😇❤️

This post collects field-tested, and affordable food & litter options used by frontline rescuers, shelters, and long-term colony caretakers across the U.S. Everything here balances:

  • Cost
  • Availability
  • Adequate nutrition
  • Practicality for large numbers of cats

Please see Rule 6! Nothing here replaces veterinary care or individualized nutrition advice. But it will keep your cuties healthy enough on a tight budget.

This guide is meant for already-healthy adult cats in multi-cat or colony settings. Cats with special medical needs (CKD, urinary issues, allergies, GI disease) may need individualized diets - you already know that’s a vet conversation.

Note: wet food and hydration always improve urinary health, regardless of brand.

BEST BUDGET DRY FOODS

These are commonly used by shelters, colony feeders, & long-term rescuers. They are NOT “perfect,” but they are safe, nutritionally adequate, palatable, & cost-efficient.

😺Special Kitty Complete (Walmart)

One of the lowest costs per pound nationwide. Rescue favorite for rural areas.

Look specifically for “Complete” - not the cheapest “Outdoor” blend

😺 4Health (Tractor Supply)

Mid-range nutrition for lower-range cost & frequently better value than Purina One

Good for rural feeders without Walmart access.

😺Purina Kit & Kaboodle

Not high-end but widely used for stable colony maintenance; cats tend to keep weight on & price is often lower than e.g. Cat Chow

😺 Store brands (Walmart Heartland Farms, etc.)

Stick to formulas where the first ingredient is poultry or meat, not corn! Good fallback during shortages

Bottom line:

If you can only choose one for the balance of cost + quality:

😺4Health

If you need the absolute cheapest stable option:

😺Special Kitty Complete

HOW TO BOOST NUTRITION ON A TIGHT BUDGET

A lot of rescuers can’t afford fully high-end food. These small upgrades make a difference:

😺 Mix 20–30% of a higher-protein kibble

E.g: Purina One Indoor, Purina One Healthy Kitten, or Iams ProActive Health. Even a small percentage improves amino acids and healthy fats.

Add cheap, high-value proteins 2-3× per week

😺 Eggs (cooked / scrambled)

😺 Chicken hearts/gizzards (usually $1.50–$2.50/lb)

😺 Cooked unseasoned chicken scraps

😺 Canned mackerel (better & cheaper than tuna)

😺 Use wet food as a topper, not a full meal

Split 1 can among 4-6 cats to improve hydration & palatability.

Best budget picks:

😺Friskies Pate

😺Special Kitty Pate

Keep diet consistent; frequent switching = unhappy GI systems. And no one needs avoidable vet bills!

BEST BUDGET LITTER OPTIONS

😺Pine Pellets (Tractor Supply / Rural King / Feed Stores)

😺“Horse Stall Pellets” = the SAME material as Feline Pine. Usually $5–7 for 40 lbs with low dust, excellent odor control, biodegradable. Great for multi-cat setups!

😺 Walmart Special Kitty Clumping

Affordable, consistent, dustier but budget-friendly

😺 Aldi Heart to Tail Clumping

Surprisingly good clumping; often cheaper than Walmart

For picky cats: switch gradually. A mix of clumping litter + pellets helps picky cats adjust!

WHERE RESCUERS CAN GET FREE OR DISCOUNTED PET FOOD

Human food banks also distribute pet food. Ask directly - they rarely advertise it.

Sources to check:

😺Local food pantries

😺Salvation Army locations

😺County social services

😺Petco Love partners

😺PetSmart Charities partner rescues

😺Humane Society branches

😺Community action agencies

😺Farm store “broken bag” policies

Tractor Supply, Rural King, and feed stores often discount:

😺Torn bags of kibble

😺Pine pellets

😺Chicken feed (can be used very sparingly for strays as emergency nutrition)

Just ask an employee - discounts aren’t posted!

IMPORTANT HEALTH NOTE (Vet-Safe Disclaimer)

To keep this post accurate:

All foods listed meet AAFCO minimum nutrient guidelines for adult cats.

“Budget” foods do not mean "unsafe". Many rescues/shelters rely on them.

😇 For Anyone Feeling Guilty:

If you’re feeding a colony, running a home rescue, or caring for dumped cats: you are already doing far more than most people ever will.

Rescue work is “do the best you can with what you have” not “purchase the most expensive brand available.”

Cats who:

😺Are spayed/neutered a.k.a Priority #1

😺 Are fed daily

😺Have shelter

😺Have clean water

…are living longer, safer, healthier lives than they ever would on the street - no matter what kibble you use. It's you making the difference. Not the kibble bag or tinned can! 😇😇😇

I Found a Cat (Location) Took in stray neighborhood cat, she's driving me crazy

Thumbnail

Located in San Antonio, TX, USA. About 2.5 weeks ago, I took in a stray cat from outside my apartment complex after feeding her occasionally for a few months whenever I saw her around my building. She was very friendly and liked to be pet, and she looked a little dirty but otherwise very healthy. She was often outside in 100+ degree weather without water and looked sad/tired. When I finally had an opportunity, I trapped her and brought her into my apartment. She was very stressed at first but eventually calmed down, hiding under my bed for a while. I have regularly checked neighborhood posts, but there isn't a single post or poster looking for her.

I bought her all of the essentials and kept her in a smaller section of the apartment while still giving her enough space. She was alright at first, keeping to herself and not causing any issues. She was eating and drinking normally and using the litter box for all of her business. She hid a lot but would sometimes come out and eventually started wandering around the little area. She would come when I called her and is very friendly and social. She loves to be pet and brushed and is content being on my bed or on cat furniture. I have a vet visit scheduled soon. She doesn't appear to have any fleas, and her tipped ear makes me assume she is spayed.

There is also an older female cat in the house, separated in another room. They have not met, and the older cat is very chill and small and barely does anything at all. I have let the stray into the living room a few times, but she either seems terrified to venture out or just stands at the window and screams.

A few issues have come up. The main one is that she will not stop yowling/crying. Initially, it was only at night, but she would make noise throughout the entire night, every single night. I have been ignoring the cries and using earplugs, but it is starting to drive me a little crazy. I noticed that the windows seemed to make her louder, and the other night she started trying to climb my bedroom blinds after looking outside. That was when I decided to restrict her window access. She did like Cat TV, but recently I have also had to block her access to my room because of the bathroom issues below.

The second issue is the peeing. I have seen that a UTI is a possibility, but she doesn't appear to be in pain and seems more nervous/anxious. I have been coming home to pee on the bed, and she has even peed on it while I'm around or near the room. She also pees in the litter box and was using it normally at first. I have been cleaning the mattress/bedsheets thoroughly with enzyme-based pet cleaner, but it keeps happening.

I initially assumed it was a health issue or anxiety, but the other day I came back from a 1-day road trip to find that she had also pooped neatly at the edge of the bed. She poops in the litter box as well. I have tried changing between pellets and softer litter, but she would still pee on the bed. Since blocking her out of my room, she doesn't seem to be peeing or pooping elsewhere, but the yowling has gotten much worse.

She now yowls day and night. During the day, she typically stops if I am petting her or in the room with her, but it gets much worse when I leave. At night, it doesn't seem to matter whether I'm there or not. She yowls nonstop, even though I've been ignoring her.

Finally, she is not aggressive or feral at all and seems very socialized and sweet, but I have had some minor issues with scratching and nipping. She tends to do this when she gets overstimulated from petting, but she also pushes herself into my body/hand and aggressively demands to be pet whenever I am near her. Then she gets upset but still demands more pets. She has also randomly swatted at me (without claws) and even hit me in the head really hard out of nowhere. She seems mad that I am moving around or not petting her, or possibly she is just being playful. She is occasionally playful but is typically more focused on being touched or getting food. She is very food driven.

I am just not entirely sure what to do with her. I have seen online that being patient is all I can do, but I'm not sure if it will get better. I am at work most of the day and out most weekends, so I have limited time to spend with her. I really just would like the yowling and the bed peeing/pooping to stop. Any other issues I can definitely deal with.

Is there any advice for dealing with a cat like this, or am I just not equipped to make her happy? Would it be best to let her back outside, or should I just be patient with her? She seems to like it inside but also seems like she really wants to be outside, and I just want her to be safe and happy.

TL;DR: Took in a social/friendly stray 2.5 weeks ago. She now yowls nonstop and pees/poops on my bed. Blocking bedroom access helped with the mess but worsened the crying. Vet visit is scheduled. Does she need more time, or am I not equipped to make her happy indoors?

Foster Needed (Location) Help! 4 cats at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control (MACC) need foster placement by Thursday 10/29, or will be euthanized (Minneapolis, MN, USA)

There are rescues from all over the state that pull from MACC, so if you live anywhere in Minnesota, you can help if you want to! If you want to help contact one of the MACC approved rescues (here's a list of all the approved rescues: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/resident-services/animals-pets/animal-rescue/animal-rescue-groups/) and tell them you want to foster one of the cats who's on the euthanasia list at MACC. Rescues I would recommend because they frequently take Minneapolis Animal Control cats are: Pet Haven, Ruff Start, Twin Cities Pet Rescue, Kitty Revolution, and The Rescue Crew.

Injured/Sick Cat (Location) Need advice about a senior stray cat who keeps drooling

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!
I regularly feed and look after this lovely stray cat who is probably over 14 years old. She’s friendly, and I’m quite concerned about her well-being.
I’ve noticed that she sometimes drools clear, watery saliva. It doesn’t happen every day; some days she’s completely fine, while on other days she drools quite a bit.
She seems hungry and comes to me for food, but she struggles with hard food. She can eat soft food, such as boiled chicken or wet food, and generally eats a normal quantity. She’s a little thin, but she still walks normally and seems alert. She has never been vaccinated.
I’ve attached a couple of photos of her.
I’m looking for advice from people who have experience caring for senior cats or stray cats.
Has anyone experienced something similar with their cat?
What did you do to help your cat?
How can I make her more comfortable and look after her properly?
Are there any practical suggestions for helping a senior stray cat who cannot easily be taken to a vet?
She’s an outdoor cat, and although she’s friendly, I cannot easily catch her and take her to a clinic.
I just want to make sure she’s comfortable and getting the care she needs. Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! ❤️🐾

Colony/TNR Help (Location) Fighting 4 Finn, Colony cats, and Gratitude (Flint, Michigan)

Hello wonderful friends -
It’s another new week and I’m hoping to finally get some answers to why my sweet little girl Finn is still so lethargic. Returned to vet 2 days ago for more testing: she was double negative on snap test (photo). But she is still congested and her breathing is struggling.
Now I have a new medication- but it takes a few days to arrive (online pharmacy) and next step is bloodwork & chest xray -
Both of these procedures are very expensive and unfortunately not provided at Clinic. So Finn will need to go to full service vet. The initial cost just to be seen with be close to $100, with bloodwork & xray work reaching well over $500.
I don’t know what else to do but pray that this little girl can get well-
It’s been rough as I’m already stretched as thin as possible -
I’ve got 8 inside rescues, close to 20 in yard, plus 4 colonies I care for. My entire day consists of helping cats. Before Finn, I couldn’t imagine taking on any new responsibilities, but I just can’t look away from any sick /injured cats. So now I have Finn in isolation who needs constant care and attention, plus all the other cats who depend on me. I’m not sure how long I can juggle this many cats, plus TNR. Please send me some positive thoughts and prayers.

Currently : Wet food desperately needed.

Not sure what Finn’s fundraising will be - will update after estimate from vet.

This little one started coming to my house a few weeks ago. I started feeding her. She was very very skittish and would run away just seeing us through the window.
I already have two cats at home so I thought I will just get her comfortable enough to bring to the local rescue. Well, they said they can't take her for a couple weeks. I took her inside in a separate room and she is exactly where she wants to be ❤️ she is the sweetest cat I've ever seen.

She will be heading to the vet next week to be tested for diseases and checked up.

I have a feeling she is pregnant too..
If all is well, she might be a permanent resident 🫪..!

She doesn't seem to be interested in toys , or playing at all. I wonder how I can help her . I've tried catnip, little mouse toys, spring toys, and also playing with a wand. She has no interest. She just wants to sit with me

I Found a Cat (Location) Cats come visit (redondo beach, ca)

Hi, I am a crowbro so I leave treats out for my crow and raven buddies. But 2 cats have gotten in on the action, attracted by the food (kibble). One of the cats tracked the kibble down to me and comes up to my apt or waits at the stairs and meows at me and then walks to places it's found kibble.

One of the cats has a collar and a name (her name is Kiki) and a phone #. My neighbor called the # and they said it escapes or just goes outside whenever it wants.

It seems hungry all the time. And is super skittish. Doesn't seem right for a cat with a home/care. Right now it's acting more like an unhoused cat then a pet. None of the other neighborhood cats have approached me ever. It seems fairly young, a subadult. Not a kitten, but not an adult. Kinda small, thin, scrawny, but not unwashed, dirty, or unhealthy. If cats have a regular home and food do they act hungry all the time? (kinda like dogs always beg and want food?)

The other one I've only seen once. I thought it was this collared one they look so similar, same size, coloration pattern, everything. But it has no collar. And the two seem to know each other or at least tolerate each others' presence. I wondered if they were like related or something, from the same litter.

I could likely put kibble out next time I see the collarless one and take them to get some help. But I don't know what to do about the collared one either. It's around.. all the time. I leave for work very early (6am) and it will wait for me to come out to go to work. It will then also come by in the afternoon/evening. I don't understand why it doesn't just go home if it's acting hungry. It was biting at grass an hour ago, but not taking any. Kinda play chomping.

I'm mainly just worried for the cats. I know they are built for and can likely fend for themselves, so I haven't given more than the occasional scratch or tiny 1/3 palm full of kibble.

Any advice? Ignore em? Take to vet? Etc. Wouldn't need a cat trap. They will stand still for kibble. Thanks.

💔 PLEASE HELP WINK FIGHT WET FIP. HE DESERVES A CHANCE TO LIVE.
Meet our beautiful boy, Wink ❤️
Wink was rescued by a kind fellow rescuer with maggots on the upper side of his eye. The damage left his eye area looking the way it does today, but to us, Wink has always been beautiful. His scars do not make him any less deserving of love. He is precious just the way he is. 🥹❤️‍🩹
But now, Wink is facing another battle. 💔 He has been diagnosed with **wet FIP, with pleural effusion fluid accumulating inside his chest cavity.** We have started his treatment, and we are praying with all our hearts that he responds well.
But we cannot do this alone. His veterinary bills, investigations, and treatment expenses are adding up, and we desperately need your kind support to continue his care.
Wink has already been through so much in his little life. He survived a terrible beginning, and now he is fighting for his life once again. All we want is to give him a fair chance to recover, feel better, and enjoy the love he has always deserved.
🙏 **Please help us cover Wink’s vet bills and FIP treatment.** Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to giving him that chance.
If you cannot donate, please share his story. Your kindness could reach someone who can help save him.
**Wink is not asking for much. He just needs a chance. Please don’t let him fight this battle alone.** 💔🐈‍⬛
Thank you for being his voice and standing beside him. 🙏❤️

Injured/Sick Cat (Location) Sick stray, need help/advice

Me and my wife are 23, we live in a very rural area. Nearest vet is 3-4 hours away and we have called and been told the waiting time would add another 2-3 hours. This cat is a stray that we found in the middle of the road. Wasn’t really moving and seemed disoriented. After luring him to the side of the road and observing for awhile, he is friendly. But seems kind of wobbly and is weezing/sneezing a lot. Seems slow to react to everything. Doesn’t really seem to be able to see anything either? No reaction when you move things in front of him. His pupils are extremely dilated even in a bright room. We have him quarantined in the bathroom because we own our own cat and are terrified of him getting sick. We are being very careful to wash our hands, keep our cat in a different room, etc.

UPDATE: just wanted to let you all know that we got in touch with a local shelter and coordinated for them to take him after getting looked at by a vet. We dropped him off at the vet earlier today and they told us he is almost entirely blind and deaf, and has a bad respiratory infection but will be okay :) there aren’t many houses in the area near where we found him but me and my wife are going to leave some posters on doors just to make sure we didn’t accidentally take someone’s pal. Either way he needed care badly so I think it’s good we got him to a vet. Thanks for everyone’s kind words and advice! We desperately wish we could adopt him permanently, but I am graduating soon and headed into the military. That will probably be hard enough with one cat much less two. So “Mr wobbles” as we’ve named him will go to another good family :)

Is there anyone who wants to adopt Mama Cat? Actually, I tried to adopt her before but she doesn't really know how to socialize with other animals. I returned her to the gym because my dog almost went blind because of her, but I consistently brought her food before. I just stopped last month because I couldn't go to the gym, and I thought she was going to die because when I went back to the gym, she was in the corner and had been hit. I can't afford to treat her again, but I took her to the vet several times before because she got sick as well, but now she's really in bad shape, and I thought she was going to die. I haven't been to the gym for more than a month because I was trying to avoid pain. But I went back earlier, and she's still alive, but her legs are just bones now. I'm sorry, I can't do anything right now but cry. I found out that she had been abused there, is there anyone who can help to adopt her please!!!

Every single time I feed a stray and watch them satisfy their hunger, it just brings me so much quiet joy.

I honestly believe that if more of us took just one small step to help the animals around us, the world would feel a little kinder, warmer, and more welcoming—for them, and for us too.

Just wanted to share this little moment with you all! ❤️

Hi all, hope everyone's having a great weekend!

We met this new pregnant kitty a little over a week ago, and she only showed up again today. Thankfully, we had a crate with us while we were out feeding, since we had just released one of our community cats back to her colony after recovering with us. We decided to swoop her up because we really don't want to risk her disappearing again and then showing up next time with a whole litter of kittens.

We have no idea how far along she is, but we're hoping to take her to the clinic this Tuesday for a routine spay-abort.

A little further into the video is a handsome man with a busted ear. 😭 He's great at picking fights with our regular community cats, so a little trouble-puff removal would hopefully help with that.

We're planning to take 4-6 cats with us for neutering to make the most of the trip, depending on what funds allow. For now, these two are our top priorities. We'd really love to include a couple of females as well, but we can only do that with your help!

Neuters cost $45 (at most, depending on the cat's weight), which covers the procedure, convenia, and rabies vaccine. Any amount would go a really long way toward preventing more unwanted litters.

To donate:
📩 Donate via PayPal
📩 Donate via Debit or Credit

Please note "for neuter/TNR" in your donation so we can properly track it, as we also have another ongoing fundraiser for a foster.

Thank you so much for helping us keep up with these community cats. 🙏

Injured/Sick Cat (Location) Vet bill support for a stray kitty with severe gingivitis

Last night, I took in a cat who had stopped eating and had a horrible, foul smell coming from her mouth. I knew she needed dental work, but I never imagined she was suffering to this extent. Her consultation video is in the comment section.

Her fur is matted. Her mouth is filled with infection and blood. She cannot eat dry food or even wet food.

At the clinic, the vet confirmed that she has severe gingivitis and dehydration. Her SNAP test also came back positive for FIV.

She is in pain, she is unwell, and she has a long road ahead of her.

She will need to stay at the clinic for the next 5 days to receive treatment and supportive care. Once she is stabilised, she will hopefully be able to undergo the dental treatment she desperately needs.

I couldn't go to the clinic myself, she was sent with a driver and the vet sent me photos and videos via WhatsApp. Seeing her condition is heartbreaking.

I had to plead with the vet to take her in because I still have outstanding bills from previous rescue cases.

Now, I need help to continue her treatment. Please help me give her a chance.

Even a small contribution or a single share could make a difference.

She deserves a chance to recover, to eat without suffering, and to know what it feels like to be cared for.

Colony/TNR Help (Location) Cat colony shelter advice needed

My townhouse complex takes care of a stray population of cats of about 10-12 individuals who have been spayed and neutered and 2 people leave open their garages a crack for them to take shelter from the elements and winter.

I'm looking to build a small structure to help make sure the cats have places to keep warm and stay safe. Because its Dallas, Texas it doesnt get or stay too cold and I'll end up in the summer putting im cooling tiles but I don't even know where to start

Does anyone have any advice or place that I can start looking to make a small cat shelter that help my neighborhood cats stay dry?

Injured/Sick Cat (Location) Three rescued cats need your help — we lost one, yet its vet bills still need to be paid

Hello everyone, I have three cats that require urgent veterinary attention at this moment. One of them is my three‑year‑old blind cat, who has recently lost weight and developed jaundice requiring immediate treatment. Today’s veterinary costs reached around $50, plus an additional $30 for medication and special wet food.

Two more cats are currently receiving hospital care. One is suffering from severe cat flu, while the other was our white‑and‑orange cat, admitted with serious jaundice and stayed under care for a full week. Sadly, we received news today that she has passed away, and we still have her outstanding hospital bills to settle.

I am an independent animal rescuer based in Morocco, caring for about 60 stray cats. I work hard to provide food and daily care for all of them within my limited means.

Managing the care of 60 cats while covering these growing medical expenses has become extremely challenging for me alone. If you wish to support our rescue work, you may donate through the links below, leave an encouraging comment, or share this post to help us reach more people. I am able to provide veterinary receipts and regular updates on the remaining cats’ condition. The bills shown are only from yesterday; further costs are expected for the two cats still receiving treatment.

Thank you sincerely for your kindness and support.

Injured/Sick Cat (Location) Update on Finn & Hope: We Need Your Advice, and Prayers ❤️🙏📍Charlotte,NC,USA

Hello everyone,

An update on little Finn and his sister, Hope. ❤️

http://www.sunkissedkitties.org

Finn had a high temperature overnight and is on steroids. Hope is also starting to show some symptoms. We’re watching her closely, and if her temperature rises, we’ll take her to the emergency vet. They already have an appointment scheduled for tomorrow.

The FIP medication we ordered hasn’t arrived yet and will take some time. Thankfully, a kind rescue friend has some available and will deliver it today. We’ll check with our vet before using it while we wait for our own supply to arrive.

Another cat in their foster home is showing symptoms too. We’re worried about all 11 cats there. Right now, we’re open to any advice, guidance, or help anyone can offer. We can’t do this alone.

We don’t know how we’re going to manage their treatment. We’re completely heartbroken and overwhelmed right now and we don’t have much resources we need to help them.(Can any rescue help them? We’ve been calling and messaging everywhere, but we haven’t received any answer yet.)

If you’ve been through FIP with your own cats, please share how you cared for them during treatment and what helped. We would really appreciate hearing your experiences and advice.

Some people have suggested euthanasia, but we’re not ready to give up on them. We’ll keep fighting for them as long as they’re still fighting. Finn is still eating, and we’re holding on to that little bit of hope.

I’m feeling a little unwell myself today, so I may be slow to reply. Please leave a comment or message me directly. Thank you for caring about these babies.

Please send lots of positive thoughts, healing wishes, and prayers for them…and a little strength for us too. We feel completely lost right now. 💔🙏

Running our rescue is about so much more than giving our animals food and a place to sleep—it’s about giving them love, healing, and a second chance at life. 🐾❤️

Every single month, we have to cover vet visits, medicines, food, water, and electricity to keep their safe haven going. These costs don't stop, even when donations slow down. Truthfully, there are days when the weight of it all feels very heavy, but we keep pushing forward for them.

If you are able to help, even the smallest donation makes a world of difference. It feeds a hungry belly, pays for life-saving medicine, and keeps our doors open.

If you can’t donate right now, simply sharing this post helps more than you know.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for loving these animals with us and helping us give them the life they deserve. 🙏✨

Also please include a special Prayer for Ponkan 🐾🕯️

Please join us in praying for our dear Ponkan, who has been missing since June 16, 2026.

Colony/TNR Help (Location) I'M SAD

Post image

I’m feeling really sad and discouraged. 💔 I’m trying my best to save stray cats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but my Reddit posts asking for help keep getting removed. These cats have no shelter, and winter is coming. I’m doing everything I can to help them, but I can’t do it alone. I just want to give these innocent souls a chance at a safer, better life. I wish my posts could reach people who care and want to help. I’m not giving up on them, even when things feel so difficult. 🐾❤️

I Found a Cat (Location) Unsure if a cat is homeless or not. (Kingston/USA)

So obviously I want to check for a microchip but I was wondering what other physical or emotional behavior I can look for.

What is happening with this cat and what I've tried:

- Appeared on a chair on my porch one day and has been coming to see me almost everyday for 4 or 5 days.

- I did not offer food at first. I didn't have any. I have since fed him one time.

- I have only seen this cat near our cars and across the street in the road. Never in anyone else's yard or house.

- People on our neighborhood app cannot identify the cat but claim to have seen him.

- He came into my house and even after being fed once continues to be very vocal to the point where I don't know what he could need but it is persistent. I leave my front door open when he visits so he knows he can leave.

- Physically appears healthy. Normal weight. Ears are clean with slight irritation on the regular ear (right in photo) with no problems in or around folded ear.

And while I will check for his chip I will feel bad if this is someone's cat and we're just overreacting. My main concern is that if he is a stray, winter is coming.

I Found a Cat (Location) CDS gave us a very skittish stray. Need help with our next steps.

It finally happened. The CDS provided us with a cute little stray in the USA. I'm thinking that this cat is probably a young adult. We are a middle aged couple. After leaving wet food out on a paper plate for 4 nights in a row, this sweet boy keeps coming to our house for his evening meal very late at night. Luckily we were able to catch his feeding through our existing cats food camera tonight after positioning it against the sliding glass door so we know we aren't just feeding something else. I was so excited to see him come but sad that he doesn't have a nice warm place to come home to.

After we reviewed the footage, we noticed he kept stopping to peek into the window as he ate his dinner. Not sure if it was out of caution or just curiosity.

Originally I kept spotting him in the front yard but he wouldn't let me near him even though he looked curious. But that's how I found out he existed. After seeing him at odd hours of the night, and how scared he is I am assuming he doesn't have a home.

In the next couple of months the weather does have the potential to get below freezing here so we purchased him a cat house that will be arriving in a couple of days. It was a nice one that has indoor heating. We have plans to get him a cat bed and actual food bowl that we can supply him with kibble. He has a water bowl. I fear that we might not get him to be tame enough that he would not want to live in our actual house, especially with our resident cat inside. (She's a lazy senior.) Instead I hope that we could get him accustomed to living in our backyard, while allowing him to keep his outdoor life... Unless he wants to be indoors.

Plans for the future if he accepts our offer:

  1. Talk to the vet and get him fixed... and shots.

  2. Get him to enjoy his outdoor cat home.

  3. Allow us to approach him for treats, food, and pets. The last thing I want is for it to be freezing outside and he gets spooked in his house when we have to check his food so he runs away in the cold.

  4. We want to put the food in the cat house so it stays dry at all times. Not sure if he will be curious enough to figure out that he needs to go in there for his food... do cats who have cat homes eventually figure out the door flap on their own? How to train them about this if they are scared?

For future, hopefully he will want to come inside and both cats can coexist. But right now I am just worried he will freeze to death.

Any advice will be appreciated.
