2004 Golf Mk5 GTI 2.0 TFSI: red steering light, no interior lights, dash backlight dead, scan tool won’t connect
Hi all, I'm helping a friend with his 2004 Golf Mk5 GTI 2.0 TFSI. I'm in France, sorry for any mistakes in my English.
Symptoms:
- Steering is very heavy and the steering wheel warning light is red
- Instrument cluster has no backlight (only the warning lights show)
- Interior lights don't work at all
- Headlights work
History: the previous owner replaced the battery because the old one was dead, and the car went into this state afterwards. We replaced the battery again, no change. An aftermarket CarPlay head unit has been fitted, and I don't know how it was wired.
What we tried: no blown fuses (visual check), a scan tool (about €200) can't connect to the car, and the steering angle calibration fails.
Next I'll measure power and ground at the OBD port (pins 16, 4, 5) and unplug the head unit to see if anything comes back.
Has anyone seen this? Could it be the J519 (onboard supply control unit), or the head unit messing with the CAN bus? Any help appreciated, thanks!

code p0456 and emissions testing
So about a week ago, I let my brother drive my car and he got a "Loose fuel cap" warning on the lil display on the dash when driving.
I got out, checked the gas cap and it looked fine so i just cleared the warning, but then the next time I started the car, the check engine light was on.
Bought a scanner 3 days ago, checked the codes just to be safe, and its the p0456 code.
Cleaned my gas cap with a microfiber towel like twice, and just finished driving for around 2 hours today
Got home, checked again, and the code is still there.
My question is when is the car supposed to check and get rid of any permanent codes it has?
is it a milage thing or does it happen after a certain amount of drives? and is there any way for me to speed it up?
Also, im leaning towards replacing the gas cap, but is there anything else I need to check for?
I just need help since I've been pushing off emissions testing and since its a "permanent" code, im pretty sure it would make me fail if i tested rn.
ANY help is appreciated, thanks

Discussion Should the Mustang go back to looking small again like the Fox Body days?
I saw a 2026 Ford Mustang at the dealership today. Its so big and long now. It reminded me of the old days when the Fox Body Mustang was small.
They both look good in their owns ways. The new Mustang looks big, tough, and powerful, and the old Fox Body looks small, slim, and fun to drive. I was just wondering what you would prefer.

Question/Advice 2002 Toyota Yaris T-Sport - Temporary bumper fix, will it hold?
galleryCaught my beloved Yaris on a low kerb and reversed, which pulled the bumper off 💀 It’d been missing a bumper clip for a while and the cable/zip tie holding it on snapped.
I managed to clip most of the bumper back into its slots, then used some Gorilla Tale: All Weather Extreme pulled tight to try and anchor it to the car lol.
Unfortunately, the car is so low to the ground (and me, such a fatass,) that I can’t currently get under it to add more cable/zip ties.
It’s due in to the garage for a service etc at the end of November. What is the likelihood of this fix lasting until then? Is this thing gonna fall off doing 70mph on a motorway? I drive a couple of times a week for approx 30 mins each time, but it does involve some 50-70mph driving.
Ps. I am not fussed about the tape causing damage to the car paint, so no worries there. 🫡

Transmission fluid pan tightening
Hello, I plan on dropping the pan of my transmission fluid when doing the drain and refill. I just can’t seem to figure out how to criss cross tighten it. I attached a photo of the gasket if anyone could help me. Thank you in advanced.

Question/Advice CAR leaking
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to track down a water leak in my Ford Focus ST Mk2.5. I've recently discovered mold inside the car, and I occasionally find a small puddle of water on the passenger side.
The areas affected are:
- Front passenger side: under the floor mat and in the carpet
- Rear passenger side: wet carpet and mold growth
Interestingly, both passenger-side seats are completely dry. The issue seems to be limited to the floor on the right-hand side of the car.
At the moment, I can't figure out where the water is getting in from.
Does anyone have experience with common leak points on a Focus Mk2.5 that could cause these symptoms? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
