Quinn - The Old Guard. Quinn, an immortal being gets accused of witchcraft before being locked in an iron maiden and thrown to the bottom of the sea. She spends the next 500 years drowning and coming back to life over and over.

Sam - Death Stranding 2. Sam is a "repatriate" which means his soul will always return to his body after death making it impossible for him to die. Higgs, the villain of the game, knows this and makes a special flamthrower that works by burning "chirilium" which is kinda like a magical substance that powers a lot of the supernatural stuff in the game. Sam expells a ton of chirilium when he revives which just makes the flames burn hotter. The player gets trapped in a loop of dying and guiding Sam's soul back to his body until he get's save by another character with chirilium powers.

Kars- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 2. After gaining the powers of every living being through the McGuffin. Kars gets launched into space where he freezes. Unable to die he eventually stops thinking existing as a half-concious space-rock forever.

Geras - Mortal Kombat 11. Geras is an a construct created by the God of time to serve her. He attacks various times in the story getting destoyed before using his time manipulation to reconstruct himself. Toward the climax he gets captured in a massive anchor and dropped into the bottomless ocean of blood to sink for all eternity (or at least until Liu Kang rebooted the universe and saved him to recruit him for the good guys)

Agni - Fire Punch. Agni is blessed with the power of regeneration and is surviving in a small village in a post-apocalyptic world. He feeds his village by chopping off pieces of himself which he can regrow endlessly. A scouting party arrives at his village, witness the canabilism and decide to destory everyone. The person who destroys the village has the ability to make inextinguishable flames. Flames that can't be extinguished + Infinite regeneration = a very bad time.

Congrats, you just got brought back to life! maybe it was by some sort of weird healing, or maybe you respawned or auto revived, or maybe your now some sort of cool revenent, but hey, your alive and thats what matters most and its all good now right?.....right?

Owen (Torchwood) and Occtis Tachonis (Critical Role) -

After being shot at the end of an episode, the next episode begins with loveable(?) team asshole Owen dead, and the team using a special gauntlet to bring him back, something they have done in the past, but in the past it was a different gauntlet that only revived for a 2 minuits. but great news! this one keeps Owen alive perminantly it seems! and he's basically immune to pain, thats awesome right?

Except now he's basicaly a walking corpse, meaning he has no blood flow or heart beat (which no blood flow means no erection, so no enjoying sex anymore), he can't sleep, or eat or drink (and any food he eats he has to manually remove via forcing himself to vomit), and worse while he can't feel pain, his body doesn't heal by itself, so even a small cut has to manually be fixed.

The same goes for Occtis Tachonis in Critical Role, who after being revieved after being murdered for a ritual, is now a "Hollow One", and the series stresses how gruesome this is for Occtis, as like Owen, he cannot eat (inlcuding a lovely scene of him having to forceably dig out the contents of the undigested food from his own innards) or sleep (having to remain motionless for hours while concious so he can centre his mind so it doesn't start failing), and he now has to walk around with a constant gaping hole in his chest.

Kenny - South Park

We all know the classic running gag ie Kenny has a horrific violent death, followed by "oh my god they killed Kenny" "you bastards!", followed by Kenny being alive next episode no worse, all funny right?

Until Mysterion Rises, where Kenny reveals the actual truth. Namely every time he dies, he just wakes up in his bed (having been birthed by his Mother again) perfectly fine.

Except Kenny stresses to his freinds that while he comes back fine every time, he also remembers every single time he died, every time he was shot, stabbed, crushed, electrocuted, set on fire, and in his own words "its not cool! it fucking hurts!". Whats worse, every time this happens, nobody remembers that he died, something that frustrates him to no end, complete with him blowing his own brains out in front of the other boys to prove a point.

1. Estelle vs. Walter, Trails in the Sky THE ANIMATION

Estelle runs towards Walter and performs a big spinning move with her staff.

Walter just kicks her away.

1. Obi-Wan vs. Maul, Star Wars Rebels

After finally locating Obi-Wan, Maul attempts to kill him. In the moments before their clash, Obi-Wan starts using Qui-Gon’s stance, baiting the increasingly deranged Maul into attempting to use the same move he used to kill Qui-Gon, on Obi-Wan.

Maul closes the distance with a showy spin, and starts attacking. Obi-Wan manages to beat him in just three moves.

This is Jones, from Gunnerkrieg Court. She's one of the purest examples of this.

• doesn't eat, sleep, or breathe
• can't be injured or broken
• has apparently never physically changed
• remembers every moment of her existence
• once got buried in magma and later woke up at the bottom of the ocean
• wandered around with prehistoric humans
• was around to watch Rome burn

And it goes from there. Originally, the images were in reverse order (most recent day to early creation) to showcase her recollections, but I put them in the order I did so it'd be more understandable to those who haven't read the comic.

Robert Robertson / Mechaman (Dispatch): An IronMan-like superhero who loses his suit at the very start of the game and is now working managing a group of reformed villains. In one particular scene he winds up tanged in the middle of a bar fight and even without powers he throws hands and an impressively savage manner, going against superpowered/enhanced villain. Tearing off implants, biting off fingers and so on. Caught me by a massive surprise.

Jetstream Sam (MG Revengence): A cyborg samurai who acts as the protagnist's rival throughout the game. Compared to the game's other bosses, his boss fight is pretty straighfoward, no gimmicks or quirks, just you versus your equal. However, during the boss fight Sam will occasionaly lose his sword and while in this state his moveset changes completely. He becomes a massive parry check and capable of dealing reversals to the player, this boss fight becamse famous for this guy being actually harder to deal with without his sword.

Edit: I know that Sam TECHNICALLY isn't a cyborg and his whole deal was that he's only got a mechanical arm, he's just built different. My bad, just tried to oversimplify it for people who don't know the character.

1. The main character in Bofuri maxes out their defences/max HP because they dislike feeling pain in a VR game where they simulate said pain (on a blunted scale). Everyone else thinks this is weird at first. In real life videogames characters that invest solely in hp and defence are nothing new and I find it improbable that nobody else would've tried this build in Bofuri before the main character!
2. In Konosuba the main character (guy wearing green) takes the "Adventurer" class which is considered weak as it can't learn any specialist skills. Instead it can learn the basic abilities of all other classes. Tonnes of people love playing Jack of Trades type classes all the time even if they know they won't excel in any one area. The fact that they're a backup party member for any party member is one such strength.
3. Bonus (no image)[Insert anime/manga where party member is kicked out of a party] bonus points if the party that kicked them out immediately begins to suffer because of it. "How could we have seen this coming!?" The answer? Anyone who plays any RPGs where you can form a party!!!! Usually it's a support character of some kind.

Bonus points if it's because the target is too messed up.

X-Men '97- Wolverine has already been broken too many times to be vulnerable to Psylocke's psychic attacks.

Young Justice (2011) #2- Joker's mind is such a chaotic storm that Martian Manhunter relents after trying to invade his mind. The same thing happens when Miss Martian tries in the animated series.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe (Issue #3)- Having finally tired of Deadpool's genocide, Xavier decides to break the former's mind, only to to become braindead after becoming aware of the truth of their universe.

Instead of people's minds being broken by incomprehensible cosmic horrors beyond the universe, they experience something so incredibly Average that it beggars belief.

1. Community: Troy is kidnapped by a secret order of HVAC technicians to be inducted to their conspiracy. Their most sacred masterpiece of technology: a room which is so perfectly air-conditioned that it is always exactly room-temperature.
2. Rick and Morty: Frustrated by his grandson's attempts to build a shelf with a cheap spirit level, Rick uses advanced science to generate a patch of cement which is 100% perfectly level. Once Morty has set foot in it, he is disgusted by the outside world, as every other surface seems crooked now. Rick has to erase the memory of 'true level' from his mind to keep him sane.
3. DC Comics: In Bizarro world, all people are turned into complete opposites. This means that the criminally insane Joker instead becomes the most Sane person to ever live, to the point where he can break other people's minds with how healthy his mindset is.
4. SCP Foundation: in between the monsters from outer space and death lasers, the SCP foundation keeps SCP-2950: a simple metal chair which is so supernaturally well-constructed and comfortable that once people sit down on it they no longer want to sit on anything else and refuse to leave.

Also known as "humans are special", this trope is actually rarer than I expected it to be.

1) The humans in the Wake graphic novel series are the only species without telepathic powers, which means they're immune to psi abilities and are hard to detect.

2) In the Grand Central Arena books, while trying to achieve faster than light travel, the crew of a ship end up in the place where all the species of the universe meet. They pretty quickly realize how humans are way more willing to take risks compared to all the other species.

Samurai Jack: Aku stabs Jack with his own sword. The sword bounces off like a ping pong ball from a tungsten cube. Both of them do not understand how it happened.

Real life: In final jeopardy Ryan Gosling writes IDK (I don’t know) as answer. The answer was Internal Derangement of the Knee (IDK)

I LOVE the trope when Character A assumes that they can’t be seen/heard/perceived just for Character B to point them out instantly. Establishes a great power imbalance quickly.

In the trailer for this game Batman is dueling Deathstroke on top of a storage container when suddenly Deathstroke’s katana gets shot in half. Deathstroke calmly turns and IMMEDIATELY points down Deadshot’s scope 1 mile+ away.

Gravemind responds to Cortana - Halo 2

When Master Chief first encounters the Gravemind, Cortana, the A.I. INSIDE HIS HEAD asks Chief “What is THAT?” to which the Gravemind responds directly to her “I am a monument to all of your sins.”

Amazo follows Atom and Luthor to the subatomic realm - JLU

With Amazo hunting Luthor for his life and both he and the Atom cornered, Atom has the bright idea to shrink to sub-atomic size so the Android can’t see them, just for Amazo to follow suit and shrink as well.

The term 'Hard and Soft Magic Systems' was coined by author Brandon Sanderson. Hard magic systems are defined by having the fantastical abilities in the setting having clear rules and limitations on how they can be used. It makes for really interesting fights and situations because the setting has already established how a characters ability works and makes it so characters are rewarded for using their abilities in a clever way

(Alchemy) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Alchemy is the primary 'magic' system in the setting and is defined by the law of equivalent exchange. In order to manipulate matter or biology you must sacrifice something in return. Through this primary law you get to see so many interesting applications of the Alchemy practice throughout the series.

(Nen) HunterxHunter - Nen is the 'magic' system in the world of HxH and it is expressed in six primary types as seen below:

• Enhancement: Increases the natural abilities of the body or objects.
• Transmutation: Changes the properties of one's aura to mimic something else (like electricity or gum).
• Emission: Controls and projects aura away from the body (often in the form of blasts).
• Manipulation: Controls things or people with one's aura.
• Conjuration: Materializes physical, independent objects from aura.
• Specialization: Encompasses unique abilities that do not fit into the other five categories.

MCU and The power of the stones being harmful: in the films it was established that the infinity stones immense power is hard or impossible to handle for mortal beings, with only celestials and other powerful entities able to withstand it thank to special tools like the infinity gauntlet. But even then, when together their energy is shown to overwhelm any who wields them; severely burning them and even killing them if they're not strong enough, regardless of tools. Which makes total sense, as they are physical representations of aspects of the universe itself and are supposed to grant infinite power when united, which would naturally destroy nearly everyone who tries to use them.

Invincible and Viltrumite durability: In the show during the viltrumite war, a serum made from some beetles had the ability to make viltrumites less durable, seen when Allen manged to kill one by punching right trough him. In the comics however Allen did this by himself simply using his new strength, commenting that some viltrumites were more resilient than others. The show is a much better representation, as they are supposed to be the most powerful species in the universe. And makes more sense than both Allen suddenly becoming stronger than most viltrumites after almost dying, and the supposedly strongest species having such weak members amongst the 50 that survived the virus that almost wiped them out. Their strength is supposed to be almost unobtainable, and the show made a good job showing that to beat them you either had to be in possession of the strongest weapon, be a full or half viltrumite, be a genetically designed anomaly or straight up cheat and use some random thing that affects their specific biology.

X-men and Magneto's helmet: The movies introduce an interesting and so in-universe perfect concept that it is a surprise it wasn't part of the original lore, that is the fact that Magneto's helmet serves as protection from telepathy. The helmet has been a part of magneto's design for decades and considering his history with Charles Xavier and other Mutant telepaths like Emma Frost or Jean Grey, it would be totally in character for him to obtain a method to protect himself against mental attacks. After all he is one of the most powerful mutants ever, to the point he's almost unstoppable by most physical means and telepathy is one of the few powers that pose an actual threat to him.

John Wick - the viewer spends the first 25ish minutes just being told John Wick has an infamous past of being an assassin. Once the first home invasion happens, we see him fully unleash the Baba Yaga, completely annihilating a dozen unsuspecting assailants.

Rebel Ridge - the viewer learns early on that Terry Richmond is a Marine veteran who was never sent overseas for an initially unclear reason. Over half-an-hour into the movie he has a standoff with the town’s corrupt police chief. It’s revealed in this scene that he’s THE martial arts instructor for the Marines. He proceeds to disarm two police officers with extreme efficiency.

Naruto - Rock Lee is a character we’ve seen prove to be a capable fighter in a couple of episodes prior to his fight with Gaara, despite Rock not having any inherent Ninjutsu abilities. When his strikes can’t make it through Gaara’s automatic sand shields, Rock’s instructor, Guy, gives Rock permission to take off his leg weights. The bystanders watching the fight don’t understand how taking off some leg weights will give Rock an edge in the fight, but then when Rock drops them, they’re revealed to be hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds. This then reveals that Rock can move at super speed, and he can shockingly out maneuver Gaara’s first layer of shielding.

When a character has a high tolerance for a certain kind of attack, but an opposing force is so great that that tolerance proves ineffective.

All Might vs. USJ Nomu, My Hero Academia

To protect his students at the USJ, legendary hero All Might must contend against a new kind of foe which was specifically designed to counteract his powers - a Nomu. In particular, this Nomu has a Shock Absorption Quirk that renders All Might's punches seemingly ineffective. But after he considers that the Quirk is Shock Absorption, not Shock Nullification, he realizes that there's a limit to how much the Nomu can take. He presses himself beyond his limits and beats the Nomu so hard and so fast that it can't absorb his blows anymore, then sends it sky-high.

Astarion vs. Solar Lance, Baldur's Gate III

Astarion is a vampire, which means he's burned by exposure to sunlight. But after being infected by a special mind flayer parasite, this weakness is removed, and he can walk in the sun again. But at one point, it's possible for the player to fail to remove Astarion from the path of a solar lance - basically a gigantic super powerful laser - which will instantly kill him. Upon being resurrected by magic, Astarion will express his outrage that the player allowed that to happen. If the player dares to opine that they thought that Astarion was no longer affected by sunlight, he will exasperatedly point out that "apparently there's a limit - somewhere between a nice summer's day and the full concentrated power of the Sun!"

Livewire vs. Black Lightning, Young Justice

Livewire is a Superman villainess who has lightning powers. She absorbs electricity from existing sources and repurposes it for her own ends. But when the superhero Black Lightning catches her, he demonstrates that his power is greater than her resistance.

EDIT: Just so you know, I might have been wrong about the 3rd example!

1. The Simpsons (Season 30, Episode 9) - The character is holding a revolver (which is normally charged by putting the bullets inside the cylinder) and charging it by putting a magazine in the grip like a Glock. Please note that this was done intentionally to make fun of how guns are portrayed unrealistically in movies;
2. Shadow the Hedgehog video game - In one of the trailers, Shadow is holding what I think was an M4A1 and, in this shot, he is arming it by pulling the handguard like a shotgun. The handguard is only for protecting the shooter from the heat generated by the barrel.
3. Stranger Things (Season 5, Episode 8) - During the fight with the Mindflayer, Nancy is loading an M4A1-5, and, after she inserts a magazine, she is pushing the carrying handle to arm it like a shotgun. That's not what a carrying handle is for, obviously.

I want to mention that I know there's another popular example with a silencer for a shotgun or something, but I am not familiar with it. Also, I tried my best to identify each gun, so please correct me if I was wrong about any of them.

We see the “fake paradise” trope pretty often in fiction: an alternate reality that the protagonist discovers, where everything seems perfect and wonderful.

Usually, the protagonist is tempted or trapped into staying there. And most of the time, the story treats choosing the fake paradise as a bad decision. Either the paradise is secretly corrupted or evil, or staying is portrayed as selfish, cowardly, or simply a way for the protagonist to run away from their responsibilities and problems.

But there are a few rare examples where choosing the “fake paradise” isn't really condemned and may even be portrayed as a genuinely positive choice.

San Junipero - Black Mirror

The titular town is a highly advanced simulation populated by people who are elderly, terminally ill, or already dead. One of the two protagonists has to choose between dying and joining her family in the afterlife, or having her consciousness uploaded to San Junipero so she can remain there with her girlfriend.

It's one of the rare genuinely optimistic endings in Black Mirror. She chooses to stay in San Junipero with her girlfriend, and the story doesn't frame this as a bad, selfish, or cowardly decision. Quite the opposite: it's presented as a happy ending.

Nihal - Nihal of the Land of the Wind (The Chronicles of the Emerged World)

During her quest to obtain a powerful McGuffin that could help bring a massive conflict to an end, Nihal, a protagonist who has suffered tremendously and lost her entire family as well as many people close to her, is offered an alternate reality by a spirit.

In this reality, she is reunited with her loved ones and the person she loves : essentially, the life she has always dreamed of.

Unlike the usual version of this trope, the spirit explicitly tells her that this isn't a trap. She has actually developed compassion for Nihal and genuinely wants to give her the life she deserved.

Nihal considers the offer, but ultimately refuses it, choosing to finish her quest instead. And the spirit accepts her decision.

What I find interesting here is that the story doesn't really portray the offer itself as evil or the desire to accept it as selfish. The paradise is genuine. The spirit is genuinely trying to help her. Nihal simply chooses to continue despite knowing what she's giving up.

Vacation Goo - American Dad!

A much more comedic example. The protagonist's family is dysfunctional, and that's putting it mildly, but they all agree that their vacations are wonderful.

They eventually discover that the father has been keeping them inside a simulation that convinces them they're having perfect vacations.

But by the end of the episode, they realize that the simulation is actually beneficial to their family dynamic, and the father ends up joining them in their simulated vacations.

So instead of the usual “you must escape the fake reality!” message, the episode basically concludes that the fake reality is actually good for them.

**1) Plastic Man, DC**

Being entirely plastic and with total control of every molecule in his body, Plastic Man has no organic brain for telepathy to affect.

**2) Toji Fushiguro, JJK**

Due to his Heavenly Restriction converting it all to physical power, Toji has no Cursed Energy, making him undetectable and resistant to Cursed Techniques.

**3) Elsa Bloodstone, Marvel**

The supernatural powers of the Bloodstone, in addition to enhanced physical ability, grant Elsa an immunity to supernatural infections, such as vampirism and zombie bites.

Inko Midoriya (My Hero Academia)

She can only levitate small objects

Kazari Uiharu (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun)

She can keep objects smaller than a basketball at their current temperature

Edit: Inko Midoriya can only attract small objects and Kazari only can use her power if she hold the object with her bare hands

Teodora vs Ghost of Medusa (Legend Quest)

Medusa (who as a ghost can only petrify other ghosts) failed to petrify Teodora because it would be later revealed that Teodora isn't actually a ghost but instead an astral projection

Usopp vs Perona (One Piece)

Usopp can't be made depressed by Perona's hollows because he's already depressed giving him the upper hand that no one else has

Teen Titans: Robin, despite supposedly being the only member of the team without any superhuman abilities at all, has in modern times become infamous for all the insane superhuman bullshit he managed to get away with, most famously jumping onto a bad guy from several stories up and landing on his knees.

One Piece: There are all sorts of power systems in One Piece, from a bunch of fruits that give you superpowers but make water your kryptonite, to one weird instance of color-coded mind control witchcraft that as far as I'm aware we only saw once and never again. But you can have absolutely none of that and still slice a giant battleship to pieces singlehanded because this is a world where it's possible to just be that good at swinging a sword.

Rogue (Marvel's X-Men) She can absorb life force, memories and other people's powers through physical touch by prolongued skin to skin contact with other people may result in accidentally putting them in a coma or even killing them, therefore making it hard to have intimate physical interactions with people in everyday life.

Makima (Chainsaw Man) spoilers for non manga readers. She's the control devil and her power makes her automatically control any being who is lower than her, making it hard for her to have any meaningful relationships with humans or most devils since she'll just end up putting them under her charm, her biggest desire in life is to find an equal partner who has free will while interacting with her, the only being capable of doing so is the chainsaw devil.

Shigaraki (My Hero Academia) His power lets him decay anything or anyone if he touches them with all 5 of his fingers, the problem is he can't turn it off so he always has to touch things or people he doesn't want to decay by lifting at least one finger, imagine living your whole life having to keep a mental note in your head to not touch anything with all five fingers or you'll make it decay. No wonder the dude turned into a villain, and even more tragic is the fact that he just accepted that his only role in life is to destroy as if it's his destiny.

Qrow (RWBY) He was born with the ability to bring bad luck to anyone present in his general vicinity, it helps him at fighting bad guys and monsters but it makes it hard for him to stay around his family and friends, for example his bad luck power can make a house collapse on his enemies while he's fighting them but it can also make his loved ones suffer the same fate if they're close by.

Spider-Man 2 - Peter is fridge level even tho we seen him take down powerful villains

Jojo bizzare adventures OVA: Mohammed Avdol using his powers to light jotaro's cigarette to maximize his aura farming

Fantastic four (2005)

Johnny storm makes jiffy pop with his bare hands

Despicable Me - Even if we ignore the fact that shrinking the moon would casue a black hole, (Edit: I understand I was wrong here, but thats still the entire moons gravity in his hand, he couldnt survive) its absence would also be catastrophic. Earths Axial tilt would be less stable, its rotation could also slow down, ecosystems would change with no tides. And lots of what humanity had built form satalights to telling time is based on the moon, remove that and it all gets scrambled.

Bad Guys 2 - A magnet strong enough to rip gold out of the earth would be apocalyptic, as gold is used in many things. Pacemakers would be torn apart inside of peoples chests, all phones would be destroyed. In general ALL circuitry uses gold and would be torn up and cease to function. And all of that flinging through the air, that debri would be lethal.
