Tire wear sticky post? Weekly tire wear thread?

Its getting a little crazy. Also, why not ask the TD coaches/organizers? This is a great sub but I feel like TD coaches are a more reliable source for that kind of info.

What does this tyre say about my first trackday?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

back in august I did my first track day with an instructor and I had loads of fun. But lately I've been wondering what my tyre wear pattern and color says about the tyre pressures that I had, my riding style or my suspension setup.

The tyres were a set of Pirelli Diablo Rosso II made in mid 2024 on a 2019 Street Triple S. I ran a 2.2 bar on the front and 1.9 bar on the rear. It was done on a day were we saw around +37ºC. The blue of the tyre was less intense in person and has since faded out to black again. I felt loads of grip, but I know the full potential of these tyres are above of my current skill level.

Looking forward to your insights!

Can a stock ninja 400 be competitive at the club level?

I’ve got a stock ninja 400 save for clip ons and rearsets. For reference I’m a bit off from being competitive at the amateur club level (running 2:09 and 2:04s fighting for podium). I can definitely pin point some spots where I can improve, struggling with early turn in mainly. At what point should I consider a proper suspension set up, maybe even more power? Would it even make a difference in lap time? I’m not a racer YET but I would like to get there eventually 💪 thanks

Ducati V4 riders assemble, your expertise is needed

Hello, I am seriously considering getting myself a used V4 for the track soon and would love some help deciding on which one.

I narrowed it down to a used V4R from 2019 with a brand new engine run in from Ducati service or a newer model 2025 V4S. The V4R has around 9000km on the chassis on street (according to the seller).

The V4R comes already with a full Ti Akrapovic and map, STM dry clutch and some other bits and bobs whereas the newer V4S would be bone stock.

Price wise they are within 10-15% but the V4S comes with a warranty whereas the V4R does not, as its a private seller.

Anyone tried both? I'm not looking to break a track record, just searching for a replacement for my old track bike the cbr600rr pc40. Any first hand experience especially from people who tried both would be very appreciated.

Is anyone using a Racebox for real-time lap times, not just post-session review?

I've so far just been using the Standalone Recording option on my Mini S and leaving my phone in the pits, but that's just a post-session review tool. I'd like some real time feedback e.g. during qualifying, the way I would with something like a SpeedAngle brand lap timer.

It looks like the "Track Session" way of recording can do this, but I am wondering - does it still use the Racebox' hardware, not the phone's? It also seems like maybe the session data has to be streamed to the phone, so if there are any drop-outs it will be lost (versus the Mini S' Standalone mode, where the data lives on the device itself and you download it to your phone later).

I wanted to buy a cheap refurbished Android to mount as the "Screen", connect via Bluetooth and kick off a Track Session then use it to display the lap time as I go. Just worried about if the session is recorded onto that phone and stuck there since I can't just download it off the device to my main phone any more for e.g. uploading/sharing/analysis, and if it's all dependent on that touchy Bluetooth connection at high-speed.

If you've done anything like this, I would appreciate any insight! Cheers.

EDIT: Here is one of the Track Session realtime view options, which is exactly what I want on that second screen - https://youtu.be/gI7TEU6zFpw?si=PioylLEAwwm5BeO3&t=79

Now that the seasons over (for some) what where your biggest accomplishments

Seasons over for me, thinking about my accomplishments this past season and what I really need to work on next and where I fell short.

What did you accomplish?

What did you know you needed to work on this season and didn't do as good of a job as you wanted?

Got my elbow down this season. Getting more comfortable leaning the bike over, picked up a bit more speed and set personal records at every track I went to, and had a lot of fun.

I needed to really work on exact points and lines for markers, turn in, apex, corner exit, and braking. I didn't do a very good job of it. I have a hard time remembering and visualizing them ever lap or at all. I wanted to work on lean angle/comer speed. I was more successful at this than the markers but I still need a lot of work. I have to start carrying more corner speed everywhere. I improved but not nearly as much as I should have. Body position needs to be worked on a lot too.

How to fix my body positioning

For some background, I’m in intermediate, 2026 was my first year really getting into track days, like going to them consistently. My last track session I was about mid pack in my group but some guys I was talking to said my body posture was awful and it looked “lazy” where I wasn’t coming off the bike enough. So my question is how do I fix it, I thought I was getting off the bike but really I was just barely off the bike, and sometimes my knee wasn’t even off the tank. Do I just need to like think about it when riding and “force” myself off?

Tech-Air 5 vs Tech-Air 10 for track days

I want an airbag for track days and I'm stuck between the two Tech-Air options.
The Tech-Air 5 costs less and I could also wear it under my street jacket. The Tech-Air 10 covers more area from what I can tell. On track I wear one piece Alpinestars leathers, so how it works under the suit matters most. Is being able to wear it on the street a good reason to go with the 5, or a trap?

Ok, after reading some answers on my last post my wife agreed. What should I get? She said absolutely no piss missiles lol

I'm looking at a KTM rc390, but should I get a mini moto to learn the basics ? She is ok with track days, just no driving on the highway. I'll start small. Is the RC 390 a good start? I did race mini bikes as a teen I'm hoping my lean angle muscle memory is still there ..

One time purchases

as they say… cry once right

it’s not the bike
it’s not the suit
or the airbag
or the helmet
or the boots,

or the exhaust

or the $300 track day itself…

it’s everything.

just kidding but also, not.

i decided to go cheap but get a good quality result by doing the Northen Tool folding 4x8 trailer (it’s basically the oldschool Harbor Freight folding 4x8, almost the same exact design) and then finishing it and converting it to a motorcycle trailer.

all in all i spent $890 after tax, it has pressure treated 3/4ths plywood, really thick galvanized hardware and the heavy duty self locking wheel chock. it should fit 2 bikes at once just fine. but for now, just the one.

a uhaul trailer is pretty cheap. i find myself renting them out for 3 days at a time though, as there’s no time to pick up and drop off on the track day itself, but even at $70 per rental (3 days + insurance) i’d need to do ~12 track days to get my moneys worth out of this one, however: i’m justifying this as a ease of life tool. no more renting, no more going there to get it and drop it off, no more extremely heavy trailer to tow, just open my garage and go. it also opens up the roadtrip and taking the bike with me anywhere idea; other tracks, long roadtrips etc.

so yeah just wanted to show this!

when did you get a trailer for track days?

also, anyone have experience with these 4x8 foldable DIY kit trailers for bikes? thanks!

edit: I also already placed the order for upgraded, 13” radial tires and wheels specifically for trailers to be able to cruise faster / be safer overall. that was about $120 i did not include in the $890 cost

Light trailers to rent?

The Uhaul motorcycle trailer alone is around 800 lbs I think. Are there any other rentals that are lighter than that?

Advice - garage old track bike

I've a 2000 CBR929 I trackdayed for 6 years. It has sat in my garage un- ridden for 7 years. Think those days are over for me. What's the best way to get it to someone who would appreciate and enjoy it the most? Of course it would need stale gas removed and given fresh oil / coolant, and a thorough inspection. But it ran good when I parked it.

I don't use FB. Also have warmers, stands, suits, boots etc. Think I want it all gone. In south Minneapolis MN suburbs.

Suspension setup vs tire is causing light and vague front feel at apex

Recently, I've been battling with setting up the suspension on my 2023 s1000rr with manual ohlins cartridges up front and TTX gp in the rear. I worked with a suspension guy back in Sept where he was able to set up the forks but the rear spring was too stiff and told me I needed a lighter spring. Unfortunately, the new spring is on back order so I may not get it until the seasons over.

Tire wise, my last trackday (where my forks are setup but my shock is just a tad stiff), I opted for the SC1 slick as opposed to the SC3 that Ive been running for the last year or so on my old stock s1000rr (new bike's previous owner gave me a set and I wanted to try them). The front tire felt extremely vague, light, and spongy at the apex of all the slower corners. Just no planted feel at all.

I've read that the SC1 fronts just feel like this since the carcass is soft but also, speaking with the prev owner, if the rear shock is too stiff it cannot squat properly which is throwing the geometry off with extreme rake, and overloading the front. The forks are maxed the entire corner and not in their sweet spot to feel planted. Does this sound right? How much of this is the SC1 front vs stiff rear shock? If I can't get the lighter spring before my upcoming weekend, should I switch back to the SC3 to alleviate some of this vague feel since the carcass is stiffer?

Noticed these small cuts on my rear tire (Pirelli Rosso IV) on the sidewall near the bead. Manufacture date of the tire is 47th week of 2024 and have about 3k km on them. My fingernail barely slips in. I have my first track day next week and couldn’t find a definitive answer anywhere, thanks.

Sizing Advice -1 piece suit

Looking at a Alpinestars Missle V2 that is a US 36. I am 5’ 10” and about 150. Is this going to be too small for me? Id like to use it for some on road riding around the town and track days when I get more experience.

Safety means more than anything to me so I want to be sure I starts right!
